This book offeres all the step by step instructions which i found very helpful for doing home works. I got pleasure for discovering a mis-step or two in the instructions. When I got stuck, that's when i really going extra hard to go back and forth to pull my self out of a jam, and I learned more in doing so.

As a teacher in Multimedia/Art at Ventura College, CA, I review and use many books as reference. Flash CS3 Professional by Todd Perkins is a step by step tutorial to a total creation ending. The fact that this "Hands on Training" under the auspices of lynda.com/ Peachpit Press is accompanied by lynda.com training videos, makes a coordinated package for the individual learner or a classroom environment. Each chapter is illustrated with examples and tips, a valuable reference for Flash enthusiasts, animators and web developers alike. Too bad the books fall apart!

Required text for a class. It is OK so far for the most part I guess. This is a totally new subject for me so I dont know what to compare it with. It is similar to other tutorial books I have used. What I find exasperating about this book is the author constantly telling you "...you will learn more about that in chapter XX..." or "...more about that later..." It isnt like it happens once in a while it is like several times on every page. Now that I am into chapter 8, the author has added "...you learned about that in chapter 4..." or "chapter 6" or... What keeps me going and not throwing the book across the room and dropping the class is that the subject matter is quite fascinating.

I am moving through this book and very much appreciate the charts for reference, the clarity in his explanations, the repetition of important distinctions, and the repetition shortcuts throughout the exercises so that by the end of the book, you really can use the shortcuts. So far, I especially appreciate the in depth explanation of blending modes, that I have never found in any of the other adobe introductory books read to date.

(Hide Review...)  I Wouldn't Recommend This Book
Reviewer Permalink
I've used the previous two versions of this book to teach from, as well as this one, and the amount of space devoted in this book to practical applications of Flash is very small. 2 versions back most of the exercises focused on creating a flashed based site and the last two versions get into that less and less - as a matter of fact there is hardly any content in this latest edition that would help a novice build a flash site. Several files were missing or incomplete. Some screenshots were not updated from previous editions where the exercise had changed and the screenshots themselves were very small - no one had a good time trying to read the code in them. Half the books fell apart as well. I'll be looking for another book for next time.

Todd Perkins is the worst teacher I have ever encountered. He's very good at explaining over and over everything that is obvious, and he leaves out what you need to know in order to actually do anything. It's frustrating.

Reviewer Permalink
This is the worst book I ever have. The content is good but the book quality is extrememly poor. Book fall apart badly after reading. There is a binding issue during printing. If one wants to use the book often, I don't recommend it. If only use one time, may be it's ok for all the pages falling out of book after reading. I replaced with Amazon three times for the same book. Everyone of them suffer for the same problem. This was a very painful processes. Amazon customer service were very lousy and hard to deal with. Anyway, nothing bad about content, but book itself and Amazon customer service are the big draw back for this book.

The book is very elementary. That's good if you want bullet-proof hand holding through tutorial examples.

The binding makes the book unusable -- as I worked through the examples pieces fell out. Now I have half a dozen piles of paper instead of a book.

(Hide Review...)  Great Book, Poor Construction
Reviewer Permalink
The book is fantastic. Lynda does a great job with all their products, but the book's construction is very poor. Two weeks into the class and I've got pages falling out and I'm not the only one. Three other people in the class with me all ordered from Amazon only to have our books fall apart in the middle of class. One poor bloke had his in about 12 pieces last week. If I didn't need it for a regular class where we use and reference the book, I'd have sent it back.

Construction aside, the book is great. Nice examples good projects to work on and easy to understand just don't expect to have a nice, whole, intact book that lasts for future reference.

I too bought this book as a textbook for a class I am taking. Having experienced tutorials from the [...] site, I was confident the book would be terrific, and it was. The lessons are easy to follow and actually TEACH you as you go along. Great content overall. I love it.

The binding on the other hand is horrible. After a week of gently handling my book, pages 3-66 came out. Very disappointing considering the tool that it is.

The text is well written and clear, with good excercise files on the CD. For content, this book rates a 5.

I agree with the other reviewers that this book's binding is poor. I am currently on page 107, and already a large chunk of the has fallen out - and I am gentle with my books! For binding and craftsmanship, this book rates a 1. Unlike some other reviewers, I have not had problems with pages unevenly cut or glued together.

For a software tutorial such as this, I will favor content over binding in my rating, and give the book a final score of 4. Hopefully lynda.com will speak to their printers and take corrective action to make certain that their future publications are well manufactured.

Im a code-based web developer (Java) and needed to add this skill set to my current work and resume. So I spent alot of time looking for a great book with easy to follow steps.

I went through this book in one week and its great. I loved the book so much I purchased the ActionScript 3.0 title too. There is only 12 chapters in it and almost finish and AS 3.0 is really alot like Java ....well kinda

I read reviews before buying a book and just thought I would throw my take out 4 u to read

Buy it.....

Reviewer Permalink
I also had issues with the book binding/glue. the pages came out in chunks, and about 60% of the sheets were stuck together and had to be cut/torn apart. I went back to the store and several more of the books I looked at were in the same condition. This seems to be a problem with these books (according to the store clerk at B&N), and for $50 I would keep that in mind, especially if you're thinking about mail-order. As far as the content of the book, it was helpful, but not more helpful for a book half it's price.

This one of the better flash books I have ever seen. I was a little afraid to buy this book after reading some reviews about its binding and how the pages are falling out, but they sure have fixed that problem since I received my copy. It really gives a great incite and alot of great sort cuts and tricks to really up your level as a flash user. I bought this book because my flash class at school was a stinker and I needed something to help really grasp the program and this book does it. If you want to learn flash I recommend this book!!!!

I bought this book to learn some basic flash to integrate into my websites using Dreamweaver. Little did I know when I bought this book that it was ALL tutorials which you must follow step by step in order to understand the lesson. If you had the idea of reading this book and skipping around a little, forget it. In order to get anything out of this book you are forced to follow along with the activities step by step for 500 + pages. Every new lesson/topic is reliant on you completing all previous lessons and tutorials in the book. In a way it's good- reading this book is the equivalent of taking a class. But it robs the reader of the liberty of learning in the order they prefer and browsing to subjects of interest. Only buy this book if you have the patience to read and follow the 500 pages of tutorials step by step by step...

I recently bought the adobe suite master collection, and thought that it would be fun to learn at my own pace. I purchased the book online through amazon. First let me say that 200 of my pages have already fallen out. That part was very disappointing.Anyway, when I started the first chapters 1-9; I thought that the book was really great. When I got to chapter 10 and on things started to get confusing. In part because the writers of the book began to leave little important factors out of the writing. The writer of the book would show you how to do something, and then leave you hanging out there in the wind.Chapter 10 had many missing files from the CD. I called peach pit press to try and get some assistance with the missing files; they did not give me a lot of assistance, they just made my brain hurt even more. I am still trying to get through the book. I have done a little bit of flash, but in my opinion the book is not great. For the price that the Masters suite cost, one would think that there would be some amazing books out there to teach this amazing program. I guess I will just have to keep looking until I find a really good book. This whole fiasco with this book makes me a little leary about purchasing the other books; Dreamweaver, Indesign, photoshop, premiere Pro,Illustrator, Encore, Fireworks, and I think that there are a few more that I did not name. I had every intention of purchasing each one of these books so that I could be more proficient in the programs. I guess I will just have to look for another way to learn the program.

I resent the low ratings for this book because they're not about the content of the book. As a person who sometimes has to buy several books to find a decent one in the computer or webdesign world, when there is a perfectly good book out there, that gives clear and accurate information, it's not fair to other people who might benefit from the book to sway them with a low rating. This book is an excellent tool for learning flash. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the content of the book, which is why most people will buy it, so it's not fair to give it a low rating for things that don't relate to it's content. And for the record, my book is bound very well. It is not falling apart at all.
