Immunology : A Short Course

Now in its FIFTH EDITION, this widely acclaimed textbook has been updated and revised to incorporate new findings.  Providing a concise yet thorough introduction to immunology, this text continues to provide complete coverage of all key topics in modern immunology without overburdening the reader with excessive detail or theoretical discussions.  Each chapter is divided into short, self-contained units that address key topics illustrated by uniformly drawn, full color illustrations. In addition to updating all of the chapters, IMMUNOLOGY: A SHORT COURSE, FIFTH EDITION includes completely rewritten coverage of such key topics as complement, immunodeficiencies, and lymphoid neoplasms.  Written in a clear, user-friendly style, this text is suitable for integrated courses that cover microbiology, immunology and pathology, as well as focused immunology courses.

I love this book! I'm a 4th year medical student and I have 3 other texts on immunology and this is the one that I keep going back to. I loaned it to a friend and it burned in a fire so here I am ordering it again. The text is simple and to the point. The diagrams are suitable and I found them detailed enough. This is my bedtime reading book.

This book is adequate. I cannot give it a much more glowing review than that. I must agree with some of the other reviewers in that it lacks good figures. The text is ok. I would definitely discourage anyone from buying this as a reference text.
I mainly bought the book because it has review questions at the end of each chapter that sometimes appear on our exams.
For med students I would definitely stick with the BRS Micro/immuno and augment it's succinctness with handwritten notes.

This book is excellent as an introductory textbook of immunology. I teach 1st year medical students immunology and have very little curriculum time to do this. The 5th edition of Immunology: A Short Course covers all the essential material without making it needlessly cumbersome. I recommend it without reservation.

This is one of the worst textbooks I've ever read. I bought this book for my M1 Immuno class and threw it away after a week. The explainations are poor at best and the pictures are pathetic.

(Hide Review...)  Good but still needs some reviewing
Reviewer Permalink
I used this book in my immunology class at the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras campus and first the class was awful because of the professor that didn't know what she was teaching and because the book even though is good still needs some work to be done, its full with errors, for example when it is explaining the immunoassays it doen's say that there are two kinds of ELISA:Direct and Indirect, it also doesn't explain the concept of Titer so if you take this class and use this textbook as your primary reference book be prepared to read and memorize like crazy, Immunology is a subject that should be teach in a conscise manner and with an analytical perspective not with the "empty-the-bottle" approach.

(Hide Review...)  A great introduction to immunology

This book is a great introduction to immunology. Many other immunology books have too much information to absorb, but this book is as brief as possible without sacrificing clarity. I especially liked the review questions and ample references at the end of each chapter.

(Hide Review...)  As textbooks go, this one is a very good read.

I read this book and I second the customer comment from "A Reader" dated 07/05/96. This is a great, user-friendly, humanely written book. Better to really know this book and use Janeway, Roitt or another text as a reference.

(Hide Review...)  An outstanding introduction to the principles of immunology.

This book, with good color graphics and easy to understand descriptions of immunological processes, is the best introduction to the field that I have read. It is clearly written and all of the information is presented in language that informs rather than confuses the reader. The authors do a very good job of balancing the conflicting demands of scientific rigor and readability. At the end of the book, I felt that I had a firm grasp of the principles of immunology and the knowledge to approach more advanced and technical works. I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in developing a firm understanding of the basic science of immunology.
