(Hide Review...)  Good general information, but not for the test
Reviewer Permalink
I used this book and MCSE:Fast Track, both highly rated, plus the Transcenders, to study for this exam and none of these came even close to what's in the test. I studied well for this and passed 5 tests previously, first try. This book is far removed from the scope of the test. I gave 2 stars because I think it is good for general information and will work well for reference, but don't rely on it for the test. There's nothing about ODBC errors and minimal about SMTP and NNTP configuration. It tells how to set up virtual directories and webs and so on, but leaves terminology unexplained. I learned too late that it is not extensive enough, even with the other 2 study materials, to pass this test. Not even Transcenders helped for this one.

(Hide Review...)  2 stars for the book, but 4 for the CD-ROM

The book: not enough detailed information, error-filled (especially with the review questions), redundant, verbose, but somewhat enjoyed the cartoons. Hence, 2 stars.

The CD-ROM: actually contained questions that came out on the exam (roughly about 25% of actual exam questions were in the CD-ROM). Liked that part, but didn't care for all other bells and whistles there.

(Hide Review...)  A good buy, but some errors...

The errors annoyed me. Since they were only in the answers to sample questions section, they were somewhat harmless. But I wish they had edited the book more thoroughly. One other compaint I have is that there is quite a bit of repeated information. Hey man, just because it's the dummies, I don't need to hear the information 10x. For those of you who like getting spoon-fed information with humor and lots of repetition to ensure your understanding of the material, this is the book. For the unpatient who want concise information just to pass the exam, I recommend something else. I'm not sorry that I got the book, but I somewhat wish that I had gotten something else. Besides, this is one of the easier exams.

In my opinion there aren't a lot of well-written Study Guides available for IIS-4 at this time. This is one of them. Mr. Isiminger's writing style actually makes this book a pleasure to read. The two sample tests (with complete explanations) at the end of the book provide an excellent review of the material.

(Hide Review...)  Both pass the exam and a great reference in the real world!

I have read David's "Inside Windows NT Infrastructures" and found it an immense source of information - so it was with great joy I discovered he had written this MCSE study guide. It not only helped me pass the exam (5 of 6) but also has become an invaluable reference source in the real world as well. I completely recommend this book, as with all the screen captures and detailed analysis it prepares you to handle both the written and practical questions that make up the IIS 4.0 exam. With David's practical knowledge and sound advise also included in this book it also serves to become one of the best reference tools for day-to-day dealing with IIS 4.0. Buy this book - you won't regret it.

I am new to the IS world but with new changes coming everyday it is hard just knowing where to get started. In spite of the title it never made me feel dumb. In fact it answered alot of questions you never want to ask around the shop. It is not all I am using to study but it gives a great foundation to learn about IIS4 and highights important parts of the exam. It is not strictly a set of study questions the author goes to great lengths to explain the subject matter. I guess the only thing bad was the title, my fix was to spend 5 bucks at Kinkos to get new covers put on so nobody knew (maybe it was a vanity thing). Great book David, you did your job well to make it understandable for the "average Joe" like me to understand

Failed the IIS test twice after studying with other books. Bought this book and plunked down the dough for Transcender questions and passed!

I've purchased a total of three Dummies books for three different exams, and they have not failed me yet. I am a fan!

Anyone who wants a study partner, email me!

IIS for Dummies is a good place to start learning about IIS but it should not be the only book you use to study. The author puts together a good outline for taking the test and what the test expects, but it can't replace the valuable information you could get from an instructor led course. The test contains simulations of IIS administration which the author does not mention. The book does includes a CD with different types of practice tests (the author claims NT Option Pack 4 is included as well but I could not find it). This book is for readers who want to know the basics of IIS and with what the exam expects you to be familiar. If you can afford it take a class, because that's the only way to become familiar with the look and feel of IIS 4.0.
