"Pearls is the hottest comic in the newspaper business these days." --Raleigh News amd Observer
Named Best Comic Strip of the Year by the National Cartoonists Society in 2004 and 2007, Pearls Before Swine is regarded by fans and critics alike as a thoughtful commentary on humanity's pitiable plight. Stephan Pastis sketches this nuanced comic strip tale, which features the arrogant, self-centered, and totally hilarious Rat, who leads his four-legged friends through misadventure after misadventure. Joining him for the journey are Pig, the slow but good-hearted conscience of the strip; Goat, the voice of reason that often goes unheard; and Zebra and the eternally inept Crocodiles who pursue him. Together this mindful menagerie mocks the flaws and shortcomings of human nature through Pastis's cynically biting wit.

Another outrageously entertaining offering from Stephan Pastis. Where he gets this stuff, we'll never know.

Stephan Pastis' THE CRASS MENAGERIE is a 'Pearls Before Swine' collection including all cartoons from Da Brudderhood of Zeeba Zeeba Eata and The Sopratos. It liberally peppers color full-page strips with black and white features and it requires absolutely NO prior familiarity with the 'Pearls Before Swine' strip to prove appealing and fun. Very highly recommended for any library strong in comic strip representations.

Being a big PbS fan, I snapped this one up without reading the fine print: it's actually a reprint of strips already reprinted in two other books (Brudderhood of Zeeba Eeta Eeta and Sopratos). Pastis has added some funny comments on some of the strips, which prevents the book from being a total rip-off, but if you've already got the other ones, you don't need this one.

Another great compilation of Pearls humor. I especially enjoyed Stephan Pastis' comments that are included with many of the strips. It is very interesting to read what prompted a particular strip or the types of responses he has received. This book includes my favorite strips, featuring Pig's enemy, Annie Mae, the sea anemone, and Rat's attempt at being a counselor.

Pastis' work just gets better and better. He is one of the wittiest cartoonists working today. His three comprehensive anthologies, "Lions, Tigers and Crocs, Oh My!" "Sgt. Piggys Lonely Hearts Club Comic," and "The Crass Menagerie," in that order, demonstrate the progressive growth of his command of the form and his inreasingly sure tragi/comic vision. He ranks up there with Walt Kelley and Charles Schultz. Now, if I could only get him to read my novel, "The Cold Dark Heart of the World."

Anyone who needs a lot of humor in their lives is in dire need of the work coming out of the disturbed mind of Stephan Pastis. The Crass Menagerie, the third treasury collection of the comic strip Pearls Before Swine, continues the daily "moral" lessons of Rat, Pig, Goat and Zebra ably supported by the ravenous but incompetent crocs, the loyal Guard Duck and a secondary cast of characters who have escaped the mind of Rat as he writes books with questionable life lessons. If you are unfamiliar with PBS, run to Amazon's order form and get all three of these treasuries. The previous treasuries are named "Sgt. Piggy's Lonely Hearts Club Comic" and "Lions and Tigers and Crocs Oh MY!" Pearls Before Swine is THE comic strip for the twenty first century.

PEARLS BEFORE SWINE has grown exponentially in just a few years from being a small, West Coast comic strip to becoming a national powerhouse and one of the best comic strips being published. The strips are sometimes edgy, often relevant, and always funny (even at their lamest). THE CRASS MENAGERIE is the latest collection of Pearls strips and includes about a year and a half's worth of strips. I'm not sure of the exact dates, but if my memory doesn't mistake me these strips ran from about the beginning of 2005 to the middle of 2006.
Many of the strips include notes and commentary by Pastis. Even if you own every other collection of PEARLS, this treasury is worth owning for the notes from Pastis alone. PEARLS BEFORE SWINE remains my favorite current running comic strip, but this collection includes some of my favorite strips of all time from the series, including Pig's remote-controlled heart and the short-lived new neighbor the Orca (Killer Whale). Also featured in this volume is the general physical evolution of the crocs; the introduction and evolution of guard duck from being a violent and somewhat psychotic bird to the best guard animal on the planet; Lil' Bear's trip out West to find the one man who could have united the country; the series about Pig's arch nemesis the anemone; the introduction of the miniature Vikings; Rat's adventures babysitting the BABY BLUES kids; and PEARLS attempt to crash Blondie's 75th Anniversary Party. The end of the book includes a short section entitled "The Not Ready For Prime Time Comic". Featured are several comics that were either rejected and not published before as well as some strips as they were originally submitted before they had to be edited. There's also one strip that Pastis started but was never able to complete. Overall, this is a great collection of PEARLS BEFORE SWINE strips and an item that any fan of the strip is sure to enjoy. Also recommended for people who just enjoy reading good comic strips. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-09 00:26:38 EST)

Pastis's work continues excellent, the treasury contains enough additional information to also give a bit of a view into the artistic process which is entertaining, and a pleasant addition to the strips

Another wonderful book from the warped mind of Stephan Pastis. I love this guy's sense of humour and I own all his books. If you have not yet discovered the weird and wonderful Pearls before Swine, now's your chance.
As with any series it takes a while to know the characters but once you do you're hooked. If you like "Far Side" by Gary Larson, and "Calvin & Hobbes", by Waterson then you will like Pearls. In fact, as I write this, I realise that Pearls is kinda like what would happen in Calvin and Far Side were to meld together. Very funny stuff. And, as I've said before, buy this book if even just to keep another lawyer out of circulation. (don't sue me..I have no money) (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-20 00:42:39 EST)

This is destined to become a classic among comic treasuries. The first time I read a daily strip featuring the clueless but lovable "crocs," I was hooked. Only someone as brilliant as Stephan Pastis could have conjured up a married crocodile named Larry, who holds a job, drives a car, shops at Safeway, writes "Fresh Zeeba Meat" on buckets of chicken from KFC, and proves himself to be a totally inept predator. Along with Larry and his fellow crocs are a wary zebra, an opportunistic rat, a kind-hearted but naive pig, and a trigger-happy duck.
Mr. Pastis includes commentary on many of the strips, thereby giving the reader a glimpse into his creative, somewhat cynical mind. He also pulls some creative shenanigans reminiscent of Thornton Wilder's Our Town by incorporating other cartoonists' work into Pearls. Buy a copy today...you will love it! Do you ever wonder what goes through a cartoonist's head (assuming they have one) when they concoct those cartoons? In the The Crass Menagerie, Pearls Before Swine cartoonist Stephan Pastis shares his thoughts, trials, and tribulations for many of his strips. Sometimes he feels he has to "tame" Rat's language. The snout and the accents of the Crocs evolve over time. Pastis enjoys sketching kitchen implements!
I spent the day reading a doctoral dissertation. This is just what I needed to unwind those brain cells afterwards (along with a micro-brew!). Be warned! Pearls Before Swine is not an "in your face" comic. No graphic slapstick here; its humor is subtle, smooth, and slick. And if you don't care for it, a guard duck will be making a visit... This third treasury collection of "Pearls Before Swine" establishes the strip as one of the top comics of its time. Stephan Pastis has established a stable of characters that have grown more endearing and enduring to the very fickle comics audience.
The Rat, Pig, Goat, Zebra, Crocs, and Guard Duck continue to bring laugh-out-loud humor on a daily basis. The laughs in this book just keep on coming, page after page. Pastis' commentary on the background and basis of individual strips also adds insight into his creative process and thinking. The establishing of the popular new character Danny Donkey was particularly interesting. With Stephan Pastis at the top of his game, "The Crass Menagerie" just might be the best "Pearls Before Swine" compilation yet. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-04-12 00:00:35 EST)

Even if you own the two other books this one is still worth getting or the full color Sundays and his commentary on select strips, which are insightful as well as funny. Pearls Before Swine is the best comic in print today. (Clavin and Hobbes being the best ever in my opinion) You should pick this book up and if you like it check out his other treasuries. You won't be disappointed or your money back.*
