Undead and Unwed (Berkley Sensation)

First Betsy Taylor loses her job, then she's killed in a car accident. But what really bites is that she can't seem to stay dead. And now her new friends have the ridiculous idea that Betsy is the prophesied vampire queen, and they want her help in overthrowing the most obnoxious power-hungry vampire in five centuries.

Just the right amount of funny, sexy, and wit! I found this book in the most random of ways.
The main character is a hoot, as are all of her friends and surrounding characters in this book. I was in a book rut... seeming to read everything that sounded the same so this was a nice change. Am glad to have stumbled on this series. I will definitely have to read up on the continuation of it...
This book made me laugh, got me all hot and bothered, and again, laugh, laugh, laugh. You'll love it.

This book was recommended by a friend so although I rarely read fiction, I thought it might be a nice change.

Didn't like it. It's basically a romance novel with some quirky characters and a different type of story line. The main character gets fired, gets killed and turns into a vampire... one who can walk around in daylight. I did not like the main character as although I'm all for shopping and shoes, she got on my nerves. Maybe it's my age (over 50)

But I know people who rave about the entire series.

(Hide Review...)  All hail the new Vampire Queen! But please don't step on her shoes...

The day Betsy Taylor died started out bad (waking up late, sitting in gum) and got worse (getting fired from her job and then dying from a car wreck). Or maybe waking up in the morgue in a cheap pink suit and her step monster's tacky knock off shoes was it... Either way, she's not dead. As a matter of fact she's having trouble staying dead. She jumped off the roof of the morgue, stabbed herself with a butcher knife, drank a bottle of bleach, electrocuted herself, tried to drown herself and tried to get herself murdered by a group of would be rapists.

The only thing all of that resulted in was a hole in her shirt, a case of dry mouth, some bad hair and some dead rapists. Oh and the six year old who's mother she saved, telling her she was a vampire. Yeah, told by a six year old what she now is. Taking this information, Betsy goes back to her life and tries to get back to normal. It's not exactly normal, when a pair of vampires she meets insists that she is the foretold vampire queen, and that she is the one that will overthrow the current ruler.

Maybe she was better off dead...

I love this series and author, I highly recommend her if you're looking for a funny and chick lit look on vampires.

I decided to try this book because I was looking for something to tide me over while waiting for the Sookie Stackhouse book. I had a little bit of trouble with the first couple chapters. I thought, I'm not going to enjoy this at all. Boy! Am I ever glad I stuck it out. Once i got into it, I laughed and laughed. What an enjoyable read. I can't wait to read the rest of them.

I remember back when I had to hunt for my "romantic horror" pretty hard. Now the market is flooded. I avoided this one for a long time because it seemed like a joke. Well, it is, kinda. The author does have a voice that lends more towards the comedic side. But, I needed a change of pace and this certainly provided it.

My best advice is to try the first few pages over some coffee or tea in the bookstore if your Uncertain. Maybe it's not for you. Maybe you'll be drawn to it at a later date. Or maybe you'll find a sudden need to devour them all.

And... I can't help but picture Reese Witherspoon as Betsy. lol.

I liked the premise and there were some moments of amusement in this book. But overall it was just tedious and juvenile. I understand that it's supposed to be a parody of sorts, but so much of the dialog felt like a very bad sitcom to me... wooden and repetitive lines spouted by two-dimensional characters.

I bought this book after reading the author's acknowledge page on one of her other books. I had high hopes because I liked her writing style given on that acknowledgment. Imagine my surprise when it took me a good month or so to plod through this book (and I'm a fast reader). I couldn't get into the weak storyline and even weaker plot. The characters were too unbelievable (and I'm a writer) and the author's overuse of the F word left a bad taste in my mouth. I probably won't be reading any more in this series.

A vampire story with a comical twist! Plus the requisite smidgen of romance... The main character's take on becoming a creature of the night was lighthearted, funny, and unique. The characters were completely unbelievable, but in a fun way, and the storyline kept me reading. There are portions that are a little raunchy, so parental guidance is suggested. I would say that if you're looking for a fun, fluffy tale to read, this is a good book to choose. However, if you're very into 'real' vampire lore, I'd stay away from this book. It doesn't have the hard, gritty feel of your typical horror-genre vampire story.

This was obviously meant to be light hearted and funny. I laughed my head off at Betsy who refused to be like the other vampires with their drama and angst. I also enjoyed her being fashion conscious and berating the others for remaining in the past. All in all I found it hilarious and an enjoyable read. If you enjoy the darker vampire books then this is not for you.

Loved it! OK so the main character is a blond - dyed blond but that still counts! - and has the stereotypical blond IQ show at times but this just adds to the fun. Great humor throughout as well as interesting characters. Finished this book and started book 2 right away! Definitely getting the others in this series.

Written in the first person of a self described shallow beauty queen was well done. The premise is cute but you have to be in the mood to be silly. My first time picking it up I was looking for excape and this required too much choking the life out of my disbelief. I get it a second shot and was entertained.
The obvious steriotyped characters were a bit grating. For example a gay vampire would be more fashion conscious. I would have wanted to see more breaks away from the ease of steriotypes from all characters beyond the story teller.
The only thing is I really didn't find the gratuitious sex necessary for the story. I'm glad I did read it and find the sex because I would not have liked to hand it off to a younger niece. My sister in law would have bitten my head off for that sort of blunder.

I'm not a "chick lit" person, but I discovered Kyra Davis through Audible. Good stuff. Left me open to reading more of the genre. (I need mystery or paranormal to make it through one.) Then I stumbled across "Undead & Unwed" in the bookstore in the mystery section, glanced through it, bought it. LOVED it! Quick wit, "human" characters (har-har) and a thoroughly good read.

I wish she'd spent a little more time on the final fight scene (would have been much more satisfying -- can't say more than that or it'll be a spoiler) but it was, overall, a great read, a re-read, and I'm looking forward to reading the whole series.

Great job!

Comedy laden, this book was a delight to start but I soon feared it would fall short as the humor never let up. Undead and Unwed stayed alive with active pacing. From chapter one the stakes are high and the plot is hell bent on being something strangely different. This is no average vampire tale by far; in fact, I've never read anything even remotely close. It's not something anyone would grow bored with, as action is always taking place and Betsy's never able to settle down for a simple breather. Her 'differences' as a vampire were a nice touch as well, especially loving the part where she got out of the car and "yawned" in the sun, not thinking about the typical vampire rules.

There are a few very sexual scenes, although that does not dominate the book by far. The romance impact is not high, more like the bickering fun lust-filled hero and heroine who you want to get together, but are not sure they really will (at least in this book, anyway). I'll leave what happens between them - if anything - a surprise. You can never say I ruin a book with my reviews *evil grin* On the violence side, there's some head crashing here and there but nothing strenuous.

Overall the book was laugh-out-loud hilarious, a different vein of vampire novels, with a main character you can't help but like (even if at times she's temporarily annoying enough to where you almost put down the book), and a hero you couldn't help but almost love. *wiggles brows* I'll definitely read more of this series, especially with an ending like that.

I loved the IDEA of this series. It had such potential. I kept reading, thinking it was going to get better, but it didn't. About half way through I had to throw in the towel which is remarkable for me - I don't remember when I last couldn't finish a book. It wasn't even very funny. It needs to come with a "rated R" warning for crude language and graphic sex. Maybe it's intended for young teens to get hold of and feel naughty? That's about the maturity level it seemed to be aiming at.

I laughed out loud several times and found myself grinning all the way through. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone who wants a sexy vampire book with lots of laughs. My husband and I listened to this on audio book on a car trip to South Dakota. I downloaded the audiobook out of pure curiosity. I have heard a lot about these novels and MaryJanice has written a ton of them. So I wondered what all of the hubbub was about.

In this book we meet Betsy who has just been fired from her job as a secretary. Betsy has a thing for fancy shoes and lives with her cat. One night after chasing after her cat, she is smacked by an SUV. She wakes up in the morgue only to find that she is a vampire and that she is curiously unaffected by things that seem to plague her fellow undead compatriots. Nostro, the resident evil vampire, who is trying to recruit her into his clan, kidnaps her. Another vampire, the tasty looking Eric Sinclair, is also after her to join his cause. Betsy is trying her best to resume her live before death and wants no part in vampire politics.

The quality of the reading of the audio book was very good and I have no complaints with the production of the audio book.

As a native Minnesotan I loved that this book took place in the Twin Cities. My familiarity with the setting made some parts of the book funnier than they probably would have been to a non-native. This book is not a fine work of literature. It's full of slang, the jokes are generally stupid jokes on word play, and sometimes slapstickish. Still, the book was mildly entertaining and non-involving. My husband and I chortled at some of the jokes. It was just the right type of book to listen to in the car. I never felt that attached to it. It was easy to leave the car in the middle of the book and easy to get back into the book when we resumed driving.

I guess it depends what you want in a book. This book was an easy read, kind of fun, and very chic-centric if you know what I mean. I was surprised my husband found it as amusing as he did. It is not an intellectual read, not really that well written, and I have to admit a lot of the fashion-speak was lost on me. I am by no means a shoe expert and couldn't really respect Betsy's shoe obsession. I did respect the blatant-ness of Betsy's character; Betsy's sheer candidness and non-normal reaction to some of the situations she ended up in were hilarious at times.

Will I read more of these books? Probably not. There's just too much fluff there; the end of this book was already boring me with the over-the-top humor and the uninspired writing. If I was stuck in the car on another trip to South Dakota, and I had absolutely nothing else to do, I might listen to the second audio book. This was just another in a series of mediocre books that I have read lately.

Betsy is queen of the dammed without even knowing it. She was nibbled by strangers one night while leaving a high garlic restaurant and then is killed by accident, of course after loosing her job and trying to get her cat back into her house. She awakens wearing hand me down shoes, not her designer ones, and a pink dress. She is pissed and ready to kill being humiliated like that on her funeral day. As she progresses through her realization about being dead she meets hot ancient vampires and creepy overly melodramatic vamps. She finds out quickly that there are factions and she is caught in the middle. The middle of a vampire world, her old life and of course her pain in the butt step-mother.

This story is amazingly fun and a quick read. Talk about a perfect beach book.

(Hide Review...)  Amusing comic tale of Chick Lit and Vampires
Reviewer Permalink
This entertaining vampire romance is the first of a series which incongruously combines chick lit romantic comedy and Vampire adventure - from the viewpoint of a new vampire.

It is the first of a series which currently consists of six books

1) Undead and Unwed
2) Undead and Unemployed
3) Undead and Unappreciated
4) Undead and Unreturnable
5) Undead and Unpopular
6) Undead and Uneasy.

The first line of the book is "The day I died started out bad and got worse in a hurry."

Told in the first person by Elizabeth Taylor, who prefers to be called Betsy for obvious reasons. Betsy is a former model and is still a fashion fanatic: at the start of the book, on the morning of her disastrous 30th birthday, she is working as a secretary. Her main interests are designer shoes, designer clothes, and her cat. In quick succession she loses her job, loses her cat, and is killed in a car accident. It is a great surprise to her when she rises again as a most unusual vampire.

Mary Davidson has great fun with the incongruity of mixing up the Vampire genre, as in Laurell Hamilton's "Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter" series (or "Buffy the Vampire Slayer") and Chick-Lit romantic comedy. This book is way over the top and very funny. Perhaps the author goes slightly too far when she has a group of rebel vampires bribe Betsy to take on the local evil Master Vampire by offering her a neat line in designer shoes, but the book is always good fun.

An interesting comparison with other authors who have written entertaining comedies by combining incongruous genres would be with Marianne Mancusi and Robert Frezza.

In the same way that this book gets plenty of laughs by combining chick lit with vampires, Frezza write two very funny books which combined vampires and science fiction ("McLendon's Syndrome" and "The VMR Theory") and Mancusi combined chick lit with time travel in "A Connecticut Fashionista at King Arthur's Court" and "A Hoboken Hipster in Sherwood Forest." Anyone who likes this book is likely to enjoy all four of these and vice versa: if you've read and enjoyed one or more of the other books I have just mentioned you hav e a good chance of enjoying "Undead and Unwed".

OK, it's never going to win any of the major awards for classic literature, but if you have the right sort of sense of humour this is quite good fun. I can recommend "Undead and Unwed" and am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I loved the idea of these books. It sounded new and fresh and I was excited enough about reading them that I purchased the first two books in the series. What a disappointment.

The ideas are all there and they ARE good ideas, but these are dreadfully, terribly written, and even the greatest ideas are executed so badly that getting through this book was no easy task (and it's a tiny little book too)! I understand why there are so many good reviews of these books - they have a funny theme. If you can get past the writing, and I really don't think I'm a literature snob - I might be wrong, but I really don't think I am - and the, for lack of a better term, "falseness" of the characters, you will enjoy the books. They are exactly what they pretend to be.

Happy reading.

I found this series after googling "If you like Janet Evanovich" when I ran through her Stephanie Plum Series and was waiting for a new one to come out. MaryJanice's Undead books were on the list.

Undead and Unwed is a hysterical story of a materialistic young woman who stumbles upon the realization that not only is she a vampire but there are others of her kind who believe her to be the Queen of the Vampires. It's one folly after another as she refuses to do those "gross" things like drinking blood and wearing (eek!) drab clothes & cheap shoes. Laugh-out-loud funny and thoroughly entertaining, Betsy's undeath is a fun joy-ride into a world of shoe fetishes and the annoyingly not-so-trendy life of a vampire.

My only complaint about this book is that I chewed it up and spit it out. Same with the rest of them. I just ordered books 4 and 5 after finishing book 3 in two evenings. The cost of which is driving me to the belief that I desperately need to find my local library.

This book was pretty disappointing. The writing is not very strong, and the book is also poorly edited (there were many repetitions, some grammatical and spelling errors, and it was just generally sloppy). The story was OK, but the main character (Betsy) is very annoying. The language doesn't bother me, but potential readers should be forewarned that this book does contain many swear words. The humor was on about a 12-year-old level: if you think constantly screwing up people's names (like calling Sinclair "Sink Lair") is funny, this is the book for you.

I gave it two stars instead of one because it was marginally entertaining and didn't take long to read, but this is definitely one to pick up at the library instead of spending money on it.

The vampire series rose from the dead thanks to "Interview with a Vampire" by Anne Rice back in 1976. They're still going strong, with the dark fantasies of Laurell K. Hamilton and Kim Harrison, but other writers are tapping a vein into vampire lore while aiming for a comic angle.

One of these authors is MaryJanice Davidson. I picked up "Undead and Unwed" on impulse after seeing the Science Fiction Book Club catalog offering a trilogy of her books, and quickly breezed through the first in the series featuring Betsy Taylor, who dies in a car accident, only to be hit with a triple whammy: a) she's still alive, although dead; b) she's a vampire; c) she's considered by some to be the prophesied vampire queen.

Which is quite an accomplishment for a 27-year-old secretary with a passion for designer shoes.

Davidson seems to have written this book on the fly, without considering what kind of world vampires exist in. After rising from the dead, Betsy visits her father and hated stepmother and picks up the pieces of her life, and is later told she can't, but this potential subplot is dropped. There's also something about the vampire leader known as Nostro, but he's treated with such disrespect -- he acts more like Bela Lugosi in "Plan Nine From Outer Space" than "Dracula" -- despite fostering a number of "vampire rebellions" over the last several hundred years, that he's not to be taken seriously. And because this is chick-lit, there's also the boy toy in the form of Sinclair, the handsome guy Betsy's hot for but hates because he's so arrogant.

The humor is limited to Betsy's near-constant bitching and cursing, her unwillingness to act like other vampires and people repeatedly pointing out that Taylor's first name makes her "Elizabeth Taylor."

While "Undead and Unread" is a disappointing book, it's also harmless. You can race through it in a few hours, win a few chuckles and not feel like hating yourself in the morning. It doesn't aspire to much and accomplishes it admirably.

The Undead series is great! I enjoy Betsy Taylor's attitude about being a vampire. She makes it seem like a fun thing to be. There is romance and action in the book. Excellent read and hard to put down. I look forward to more books in the series.

Elizabeth "Betsy" Taylor is not having a good week. First, she is laid off and then her cat runs away. As if that wasn't enough, she is hit by a car, but instead of being killed, she wakes up in her casket and finds out that she is not dead but undead. Her troubles are just beginning - she discovers her stepmother dressed her in cheap clothes and took all her good shoes. Betsy vows to get her shoes back but is discovering how much she's changed: she has super human powers; she can't kill herself no matter how hard she tries; she has strange control over people; every one of her senses is heightened; and she has an odd craving for fresh blood. But Betsy isn't quite like other vampires: the sun doesn't bother her; she can go days without drinking blood; and Holy Water and crucifixes don't affect her. The vampire world is convinced that Betty is their Queen, a job she certainly doesn't want. Nor does she want to be attracted to the handsome vampire Sinclair. But she soon finds herself in a battle that pits good vs. evil and she's in the fight of her undead life to stop the evil vampires from taking over the world.

"Undead and Unwed" is a mixed bag. I liked the premise of the book and I especially liked the way author Mary Jane Davidson had fun tweaking the vampire aspects of the book, like Betsy not needing to drink blood all the time and being able to go out in the sun. I also liked the fact that most of the characters, like Betsy's mother, matter of factly accepted the fact that Betsy is now a vampire. In fact, one of the funniest scenes in a book filled with humor is when Betsy's friend is horrified not by the fact that she is a vampire but the fact that she is a member of P.E.T.A. The book has some great supporting characters, notably Betsy's friends Jessica (although the passage describing her tragic childhood is an odd note in the book), Marc, and Betsy's would be vampire boyfriend, the sexy Sinclair. Unfortunately, Betsy is not so likable - yes, she's a spunky heroine who is willing to fight to save the world, but her obsession with brand names and designer clothes and shoes wears thin very quickly, as does her foul language. The book would have been much better with Jessica as the heroine.

"Undead and Unwed" is a funny but flawed book.

This is the first book I've read by MaryJanice and I adored it. I read a lot, mostly romances, I've really enjoyed the paranormal romance genre, and I read some romance mysterys as well. The best is when it all gets combined, as in these books. I love all the different characters, each so unique, but the quirky wit of the lead, Betsy, is so much fun. Sometimes in this genre the books tend to be very dark, and although I enjoy those as well, it's nice to get a "breath of fresh air" and be able to read a book with a good balance of humor along with the darkness. I definately recommend this book and look forward to reading more.

The first of the Undead and ... series - very funny vampire story. I love vampire books and this one defies convention and goes off into a humorous romance. Betsy Taylor dies and wakes up in the funeral home and does a walkabout. She then goes home and picks up her life defying the other vampires and vampire tradition. A great read.

Betsy Taylor's birthday starts on a bad note and only gets worse. Between getting laid off from her secretarial job and having her father and the "ant" as she dubs her stepmother bail on her party, things can't be worse. Until she runs into the street after her wayward cat and finds herself staring down an oncoming SUV that is. Oh it gets worse. Next thing she knows, she wakes up in a coffin of all places with everyone thinking she's dead! Thus begins Betsy's Undead life.

As she adjusts to her new life as a vampire, many things become apparent. She's a rare breed of vampire who wakes up super strong, does not have the usual aversion to sunlight, does not need blood as badly as the next vampire, and feels not even the slightest twinge when confronted with things like crucifixes and holy water. As it turns out, Betsy could very well be the new Vampire Queen, as foretold by ancient prophecy. Is it any wonder, the foulest of the foul, vampire ruler Nostro wants her dead if she won't join him? Enter Eric SINclair whose name says it all. He can inspire Betsy to all manner of sins of the flesh. He's the sexiest man alive, or undead, she's ever met and he's the only one who can help her take on the nasty Nostro.

I had heard so much about this series since Undead and Unwed was originally released a few years ago that I decided it was finally time to give it a shot. I wanted to love this book, I really tried to love this book, unfortunately, this story did not appeal. Personal preferences I suppose. I'm not a big fan of making vampires romantic comedy because to me, vampires must be dark and brooding, maybe (but not always) bemoaning their fate until they find the one woman (or man) who can change it all. So I had a feeling this book would probably not strike me as strongly as the rest of MaryJanice Davidson's legions of fans. I was right. I just couldn't get into it, hence a lower rating, which I'm sure many people will hate me for. Ah well, such is life. But I am going to put aside my own preferences to give this book the review it should have.

Undead and Unwed was in fact a very well written story in the chick lit vein (pun intended), and provides numerous amusing moments for fans of this genre. Betsy is smart and sassy, and pretty content with her life, even in spite of the lack of bedmate potential for her age, until her doomed birthday. Her reaction to discovering what happened to her is downright hilarious, especially when she starts lamenting her dreadful "I wouldn't be caught dead in this" (which is exactly what did happen) attire and lousy non-designer shoes. Even more amusing is her downright refusal to be dragged in to the depressing side of immortal life and her thumbing her nose at many of the vampire rules. She makes her own rules, especially when she finds out she is one of a kind in the vampire community. Betsy's got spunk and she's not afraid to use it.

Betsy's relationships with her friends from her mortal life and people from her undead one provide a comedic bend as well. As she learns about her new abilities, her place in this heretofore unknown society and her duties to fight Nostro, she makes many errors that will cause readers to snicker. Then there is the hot and heavy sex appeal of Sinclair that oozes from the pages every time these two are together.

Nancy Wu does a great job of bringing Betsy to life. Her voice is perfect for Betsy and adds so much more personality to all the characters. I'd maybe be willing to listen to the rest of the Undead series in audio just for the pleasure of Wu's performance.

I love Charlaine Harris, so I thought I'd try these books. The storyline was great, but Betsy Taylor was so annoying. She was so immature that it ruined the book for me, and I can rarely say that about a book. I think I'll try one more in this series though b/c they seem to be so popular.

You do not have to be a romance reader to enjoy the Betsy series. I bought this for a friend and ending up by all of them for myself. Betsy is "like, totally" into shoes, expensive clothing and herself. When she dies in a car accident and finds out that she is a vampire, hilarity ensues. Betsy has to come to terms with her new lifestyle, an incredibly hot vampire named Sinclair and the reluctance of the vampires to look at her new way of doing things. I was pleasantly surprised by the humor, warmth and intelligence of Unwed and Undead. I highly recomend it for anyone who likes comedy, science fiction, vampires or expensive shoes.

This is the book that started my MJD obsession. Fun and light hearted humor with a paranormal twist just puts me in a good mood. The hero, Eric Sinclair, is just breathtaking and the chemistry and fire between him and Betsy just sizzles. I admit if one were to look for intense plots with tons of action from a vampire novel, this is not it. Think of it as chick lit meets Alfred Hitchcock. I personally love every character in the book and I hope this series last a long time!

This is without a doubt the worst novel I have read in a very long time. Davidson's writing style resembles that of a teenager just learning about stream of consciousness. There is no sense to her dialogue; the actions are hard to follow, and worst of all, the novel is a cliche' from beginning to end. While she may have been attempting to use all of the vampire cliches' to prove why Betsy is NOT one, she failed. I purchased all of the first three of this series at the same time, which proved to be a waste of money. I finished the first one and haven't had the stomach to open the second. If you want something to read just to pass the time on the beach or an airplane, this might be an okay read. Otherwise, invest your time and money in something far more worthwhile.

As usual Mary Janice Davidson keeps me hooked with her "Undead" series. Betsy is her usual funny, self depricating self. I highly recommend this series to anyone interested in this genre. It's very entertaining and original.
