| Johnny The Homicidal Maniac : Director's Cut | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Mayhem and violence rule in this collection of issues one through seven of Jhonen Vasquez's Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, as well as material seen before only in Carpe Noctem magazine. Dark and disturbingly funny, JTHM follows the adventures of Johnny (you can call him Nny), who lives with a pair of styrofoam doughboys that encourage his madness, a wall that constantly needs a fresh coat of blood, and--oh, yeah--his victims in various states of torture. Join Nny as he frightens the little boy next door (Todd, known to fans of Vasquez's work as Squee), thirsts for Cherry Brain Freezies, attempts suicide, draws Happy Noodle Boy, and tries to uncover the meaning of his homicidal existence.

Here we have the entire collection of Nny. This book is violent, repugnant, and yet still amazing. With its charming wit, deadpan humor, and brilliant character interactions, this book is a well-deserved 5-star.

Simply put JTHM covers a vast array of emotions and feeling that we all have from time to time Johnny just acts through with them, which can give you a sense of that same outlet Jhonen vents through johnny

I like this book. Putting it simple. I read the one star reviews on this book and I wonder: "Did they read it?" I get this idea they just read a couple of pages and said: "Eww! This is discusting!" and decided to wright a bad review. I found Johnny's points of view to be insightful and a good topic for debates. I even found that, even though some of his artwork was disturbing, it was rather funny. Face it humans may think we evolved from being primal, but really this is what suppressed gore is like. The style that Jhonen works with is stick-figurish. But he draws in a way that is very hard to pull off; his characters are in weird perspectives, and their really cool to look at. The story is about a guy named Johnny or Nny for short (it sounds like 'knee' as in knee-cap). He is what the title claims him to be- Johnny the Homicidal Maniac (JTHM), JTSM, JTRM. Nny murders/tortures people. He's insane, the story shows that. He also scares the boy next door to him, Squee. Johnny's not all bad, he does help Squee out, twice. The creature behind the wall, god, and Senor Diablo are all very creative characters Jhonen thought up. But on another note, read this book, I mean actually read it. Yeah its gorey, and can be disturbing to people with closed-minds. Big deal, thats no reason to put down some one's artwork or view of the world. Oh and one more thing, JTHM was created before Invader Zim. IZ is one of my fav shows, but people it was created for Nick! A kids cartoon station! Do you really think they'd put anything like Jhonen's original gorey style on the air? Gezz. Have some respect for the guys original stuff. Ok, that will be all.

Johnny the Homicidal Maniac is by Jhonen Vasquez, the same darkly comic voice behind Invader Zim. It chronicles the violent voyages of a certain Johnny C., who enjoys drawing a comic about a stick-figure ("Happy Noodle Boy"), talking to his Styrofoam friends, and murder. Oh, he really does love murder.
At first, JtHM is a black comedy. Johnny (or "Nny") is annoyed by certain people, like guys who ask for a smoke and elitist socialites who look down upon him. He just deals with it in a way that most of us don't - by gutting them like fish. As the story develops, however, we learn that Nny is even more screwed up in the head than we thought - and for a serial killer, that's saying something! After his date with a goth girl named Devi, the comic takes an even darker twist. As it becomes clear that Nny is not the one in charge of his deranged little world, we feel for him and actually begin to care about him, gruesome vivisections or no. Though the comic remains humorous, it carries a bittersweet undertone that won't be forgotten. All in all, JtHM is a story that's both sweet and snarky, heartfelt and hilarious. The characters are top-notch, from the title character to the dead rabbit he has pinned up to the wall. Personally, by the time the book ended, I really cared about Johnny - or at least as much as it is possible to care for a fictional character. Buy this book. It's my favorite comic series for a reason. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-06 02:08:41 EST)

Johnny is a "flusher," a metaphysical sponge who soaks up all the negative emotion generated by the world. He also keeps a demon at bay by keeping a wall wet with blood to imprison it. In his depiction of Nny's quest to rid himself of emotions, rid the earth of jerks, and keep this demon at bay, Jhonen Vasquez makes you question what is real and what is simply a hallucination produced by the deranged mind of a sometimes-suicidal homicidal maniac, as well as poking and prodding the social norms and mores of common society. In all this thought-provoking whatsit, hilarity continuously ensues alongside very graphic- and inventive- violence and randomness far exceeding that of Invader Zim, one of Vasquez's other creations. I recommend that everyone who can take a joke and who can stand a little violence buy this book.

But he is a character to be laughed at. I was reading some of the one-star reviews and couldn't help but notice that many of the reasons people say this book is drivel is because Johnny is nothing more than an immature character hell-bent on destroying those that belittle him. But that's the point. Johnny is a sad character, not an admirable one. He *is* funny, he *is* intelligent, he *is* talented, but he wastes all of this on his awesome anger, not on his art. The point of the book is to make a comment on the goth subculture and to point out society's tendency towards cruelty and to release the pent up anger everyone feels when faced with everyone else's nastiness. But more importantly, it's about the people who think they're better than that, a.k.a. Johnny, not being any better than the scum they claim to be above.
I think these comics are wonderful, and so do most of the other reviewers (why don't you compare all the ratings...). It's not for everyone, but it's also not for any one specific group of people, either. These comics do have merit, and this is coming from someone who's never been a fan of the horror genre of anything and never been a particular fan of any comics before these. Issues 2 and 3 are awesome. Issue 1 is underdeveloped and issues 4-7 are mostly an extended "don't try this at home" warning directed at the readers who bummed Jhonen out by taking the previous issues too seriously. I wish he just kept writing for the readers who got it rather than worried about those who didn't.

Well actually, they really aren't, but after reading JTHM you might think they are. Jhonen Vasquez has an amazing talent; he is capable of making the most disturbing things laugh-out-loud hilarious. For this I wish to give JTHM Director's Cut a 5/5, but I cannot. But before I explain why, let me attempt to explain the meaning behind Jhonen's madness. Naturally, this is merely _my_ interpretation of his work.
JTHM is an attack (and a very violent one at that) on normalcy through the use of satire and parody with disturbing, dark themes. Due to the dark themes and disturbing content, this work could be labeled as "gothic" (and often is), but that would be rather insulting. Ironically, "goths" tend to adore the disturbing and the dark simply because it is not "normal," but they end up carving a very specific mold of normalcy out for their own clique. "If you don't fit a certain image, you're not goth and you're not one of US," a goth might say. JTHM is not only an attack on what MOST of us would consider normal, but also an attack on what GOTHS consider normal. It is an attack on all those arrogant people out there who deliberately exclude others because they don't fit in with their own definition of what normal is. This theme pervades the entire series, from when Johnny is brutally torturing bullies for making fun of him for what he wears, to the little comments JV sometimes scratches in at the corners of his panels. But, it is not JV's attack on normalcy that is the most interesting aspect of JTHM, it is the contradictions. On the one hand, much of this comic book is rather demented and disgusting, but at the same time the book is hilarious--pulling the reader in two different directions at once. Also, sometimes there are comic strips that are completely pointless and filled with excessive (and unnecessary) violence, while there are others that have Johnny going on thought-provoking philosophical ramblings. This tension from pulling the reader back and forth (between violence and humor, and between pointlessness and meaning) is so instense that if you try to read too much at once you'll either sweat excessively, vomit profusely, or pass out from lack of oxygen because you're laughing so hard (or a combination of all three). I suggest reading in small dosages, you've been warned :) This actually brings me to one of my only complaints. The JTHM series once featured "Meanwhiles" which are mini comic strips whose sole purpose is simply a brief, funny intermission between the JTHM series. The lack of meanwhiles lowers the value of the book (since they are really funny). But, the Meanwhiles also served as a means to break up the tension in the Johnny series. Since JTHM is so intense, the random and so often silly nature of the Meanwhile comic strips served as a pleasant deviation, and the lack of these pleasant little breaks means it's much more difficult to read JTHM in longer bursts. My only other complaint is in the sturdiness of the actual book itself. I've only read through JTHM a few times, but already pages are falling out all over the place. I feel kind of bad negating a star primarily because of this reason (since it is not Jhonen's fault), but pages falling out really does detract from the overall experience. Despite the lack of Meanwhiles and the overall flimsyness of the book itself, this is a solid purchase. Unless you're too easily offended or puke all over the place at the sight of blood, this graphic novel should not disappoint. Highly recommended!!! (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-15 10:32:25 EST)

I was introduced to this by my crazy friend, and I love it. Jhonen Vasquez has a very dark sense of humor, and has very comedic ways of showing someone kill people. I would HIGHLY suggest that one peeks into the book (click "Search inside this book") and read a couple of pages. In all honesty, though, if you don't like the few pages that are shown through Amazon, then you probably will not like the book. I think that the artwork is extremly well done, but it might not hold the interest of certain "normal" people.

For anyone thinking of buying this book, the title explains the content: Johnny is a homicidal maniac. And this isn't an 80's horror film kind of homicidal maniac (one who likes to kill whislt in silhouette), oh no; the tortures and murders are shown in detail. The art work is very different compared to pretty much any other art work you'll find. Jhonen's use of skinny-as-hell characters and geometric drawings make this truly unique. Some may not like it, but that's a personal preferance.
That aside. The story is non-linear in its own way (let's get one thing straight: it's not Tarentino non-linear), with different events taking place that can pretty much be interchanged with themselves (until part five), which gives the reader a simular sense of Johnny's psychosis. The dialouge is well crafted, logical (irony!) and often philisophical. If you're an intellectual, you'll thouroughly enjoy what the book has to offer...if you can manage some gore. Also, the Happy Noodle Boy one-page segments are kept in this "Director's Cut" edition. These I found to be hilarious in their own, beyond random way. Seriously, these things are extremely random. Basically, it follows Happy Noodle Boy throughout a day in his life, which is often filled with swearing, yelling at people and usually ends with Noodle Boy getting shot. In all, this is a great book and I highly suggest you pick up a copy. I find it very hard to believe anybody could whole-heartedly dislike this book. I feel that this book is of aquired taste. If you don't like reading a book about torture and killing; you should look else where. If you are, however, interested in reading an insightful book on humanity and how we torture ourselves, this is the book for you.
No, the artwork is not beautifully done, but it's perfect for a book of this topic and genre; harsh, extreme and quite interesting. You may discover things about yourself that you don't like when you read this; maybe a few things that you do like but no one else does. This is okay; it means the book is doing it's job as a book. If you decide to purchase this product, I beg you to be extremely open minded to the opinions and theories that race across the pages; you won't regret it. While I love this series, and was so excited to see it compiled together, I was completly bummed out when I realized they took stuff out! The guy pooping his pants on a date? Missing! And they make refs. to it in the rest of the story! Why in the heck is it gone?
Otherwise, a fantastic story and collection. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-11 13:03:45 EST)

Drawing :A real bad job of drawing, you can find a kid drawing better but it works. Anyways, some text can be hard to read.
Story :The story is too erratic to be considered a true story, mainly they are just a bunch of feeling of the author (Jhonen = Jhonny? Maybe. ). But like every spooky comic, to have a clear and concise plot don't make the magic. ^_^ Is the best comic ever of this genre!!. I like a lot. It's not about the story or graphics or "its not equal to invader zim", it's about the spooky feeling, it's not about a single carnage, is about the why the carnage (for finally found that there are not a clear reason for it so it will make a sense). So why i give a 1 star?. Because he failed in the more special task :to obtain a bunch of readers that say "this comic stink!". Anyways if you like it, then grab "Squee", it's about the same. If you want a bit more standard history then buy "I feel Sick". Or if you dislike the bunny then buy "fillerbunny" or "suicide bunny", both are recomended for all anti-bunny (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-26 00:27:14 EST)

I absolutely loved this book, and after reading it again I like it all the more. The art is phenominal, like nothing I've ever seen. The writing is also excellent. It does sort of poke fun at today's goth subculture, which gives the book it's dark humor. Unfortunately Jhonen thought it would be worthwhile to take out the Meanwhiles from this director's cut, but he did make up for it and put them in Squee, another highly recommended book.
I must say though that this book has very graphic scenes of violence and depictions of torture, which are GREAT, but not for children. Anyway, its something no morbid person should be without, especially those of us that have a sense of humor. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-10 19:43:54 EST)

While the "Meanwhiles" aren't included, this is still great for Nny fans to see older drawings and stuff from Jhonen. My only problem was how the book itself was put together.
The pages literally FELL OUT OF THE BOOK not two hours after I'd gotten it in the mail. While the pages are still okay, the fact that it fell apart on me was an annoyance. I'd suggest the hard cover of the Director's cut if anything. Hopefully that's put together a little better. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-10 19:43:54 EST)

This is my absolute favorite comic book in the world, so my review might be a little biased, but I think that Jhonen Vasquez is an amazing artist and writer and I commend him on his excellent book. I love the director's cut edition because it had extras in the back and notes from Vasquez which the others don't have. Also, everybody loves Nny, so I would have just gotten the book to see him. If you love dark humor, satire and social commentary, and can appreciate a sort of warped, twisted sense of humor, this book is definitely for you.

First and foremost, this book is not for those of you who may be squemish. The artwork is stellar, even considering it's all black and white. I find the killing and the grotesque humor amusing, as would any fan of the book....but look deeper and you shall see that Johnny C. is not stupid. He has a deep, albeit troubled, mind. I enjoy several philosophies that are expounded on during the course of these adventures. I would reccomend the book to any who enjoy blood and bad humor, and to any who would like something to ponder about on a rainy afternoon trapped indoors. [Z?]

I think JTHM is commonly misunderstood. Many youth in urban America glorify madmen (because it's "cool" - a fad I think grew popularized by nu-metal bands like Disturbed and Korn whose lyrics preached pity and fatalism) whereas Vasquez himself wishes to make the point that they are weak and foolish. His introductions are vital in understanding this. A virile person is the antithesis of those who may be called Undermen (a term coined by Nietzsche). Undermen are those who resent others and believe we should all be equalized so others will no longer "offend" them. It is not realistically possible for this to be enforced 100% everywhere in the locality, so in the end Johnny tried to escape his rage by becoming stoic, but the major downside of this is that when one destroys suffering in the representation of the world that every individual has, one also reduces the impact of joy (where a stable norm is achieved but great deeds, which require great passions and enjoyment of life). Undermen do not recognize that every state in life is actually holy, and that the collaboration of these states produce the whole of existence. They have the idea that somehow rats and cockroaches are evil, what comes out of the anus is evil, death is evil, etc. without realizing that these things are essential to the survival of something better than good, which we call "meta-good," a state that requires both positive (good) and negative (bad) elements in order to keep going. Without mortality, life would be endless pointless boring time (that's why we make the most of our lives before our ends come about). Without the need to defecate & refill our bodily system, more eating would not be so wonderfully tasty. Without rats, maggots, etc the forest would clutter with waste. Without being mocked or slandered, one would not know how to react properly to their opponents (so they might go to an instinctual extreme, such as, say, killing them all). To be beyond good and evil is to recognize this relationship, and to embrace your life whatever your stature - wealthy businessman, plumber, janitor, soldier, or homeless crack-addicted bum (so serial killers are not "evil" in an absolute sense, however they could do themselves and their communitites a great favor by finding levelheadedness, but the need for this grows lesser as time goes by in a society made up predominantly of undermen whose loss will have no impact on life as a whole). Undermen come from every social class, every walk of life, and every political persuasion. It is, really, an attitude. Those who accept their stature in life without revenge and look upon life as holy are not Undermen, even if they're impoverished crack-addicted homeless bums. Johnny did not accept his circumstance of being an outsider. Those who wish revenge and resent those who have better abilities or traits than themselves are secretely revengeful against nature and life's order itself, as they distrust and fear evolutionary process. These are Undermen, even if they're fantastically wealthy, good-looking and surrounded by admirers. (Which is why high character is also necessary, as many of Johnny's victims were the "in" crowd but degenerates.) For the observant, this is nature's justice: character and internal will are the only judgments of worth that matter, because all else is window dressing. All this, Johnny only realized as he was dying.

I have to say, this is the most amazing book ever. A forum introduced me to Invader Zim, and after researching into that, I found JTHM. So I decided to buy the book. And let me tell you, I did not regret it. It was worth every single penny.
Everything about the book is just... simply amazing. The graphics, the storyline, and the comical side of it all. As some people might think it's just basically him killing all the time, I have to say, massacres don't occur on every single page. There are some points where Nny goes into a suicidal or depressed state, and when he does go about killing people, it's put into a comical way. Also, there is Nny's own little comics put in there: Happy Noodle Boy. This is also a hillarious comic, where a strange stick figure goes about screaming random things. ("I sense your envy of my neck! And I don't blame you!") If you like gory deaths, dark storylines, and random things, this comic is for you. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-05 03:26:54 EST)

...but this really didn't do it for me. I enjoyed the first 2 seasons of Zim (before it got a bit dull), so I thought I'd try this out, especially after seeing the glowing reviews. Sorry, I could only read about a third of the book. It's just not my idea of entertainment. I mean, where does it go? Just killing, killing, killing...I can play GTA for that, and get a more interesting storyline. It just seemed repetitive and pointless. If the whole book had been 8 pages long, I probably would've enjoyed it more.
Jhonen, good luck on your next project. You really are brilliant; I just hope you come up with something that expresses that brilliance to its full. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-05 03:26:54 EST)

This is a warped book, but that's what you expect when you buy a book called "Johnny, the Homicidal Maniac". It is a compilation of a series of comic books. My only regret about it is not having read it when it was in comic book form. I don't have to wait for the next issue to come out, and that takes a lot of the excitement out of it. But, as a compilation it is superbly executed, psychotic artwork and all.

I'm a bigger fan of manga (Japanese comics), but I couldn't resist reading this one ever since I saw Invader Zim.
With his unique style, thick lines, entertaining side notes, and sometimes thoughtful dialouge, Jhonen Vasquez's genius truly shows with his first work. It makes you wonder what Invader Zim would be like if it wasn't censored/edited for TV... Once you get past all the violence and language, there's plenty of messages "hidden" in the dialouge, mostly Nny's, about human nature. The Anne Gwish comics also make a point Jhonen Vasquez makes quite often: While "gothic" people claim individuality, they're all the same. The second of the two is just as ironic, with Anne talking about all the people in a club with one of her friends, just to complain how people discriminate her because of her looks. It might just be a shortened collection of all seven volumes of the JtHM series, but the storylines still shine through. I'd highly reccomend this to any Jhonen Vasquez fans out there. OK. So I have read it over and over again. This is just a great book. Forget 'Invader Zim' (even though it's great, too). THIS is Jhonen Vasquez at his greatest, in my opinion. JTHM is filled with (very) dark humor that definitely isn't for everyone. Especially children.
Through all of the violence and killing and blood, though, there are times of seriousness. My favorite quote from the book is: "Sometimes You can cry until there is nothing wet in you You can scream and curse to where your throat rebels and ruptures You can pray, all you want, to whatever god you think will listen And, still, it makes NO difference It goes on, with no sign as to when it might release you And you know that if it ever did relent... It would not be because it cared." Even in serious times, though, usually something happens to make it comical again. It is full of satire, especially refering to gothic culture. This is a definite must buy for any morbid, dark person with a sense of humor. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-16 01:10:18 EST)

Squee is a normal kid. He gets scared every now and then, but he's a nice guy. I wish I could say the same about the world he lived in. There are zombie children, villianous but idiotic aliens, and angry fanboys eager to rip Jhonen Vasquez limb from limb. Scary, no?
I can't review this without comparing it to JtHM: Director's Cut. This book has everything JtHM didn't have. Literally. The little strips (including the infamous "MEANWHILE" that introduced Devi) from the original comics of JtHM that were absent from Director's cut are here. The first half of the book is about Squee, and it has all 4 issues of the original comic in it. The other half is a series of short strips called Wobbly Headed Bob, Happy Noodle Boy, Meanwhile..., and True Tales Of Human Drama. You probably won't like all of these, but you'll find yourself cracking up when you find one of the many hilarious jokes. Buy this. JUST BUY IT, DARN YOU!!! (I also reccomend JtHM very highly. Get both.) (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-05-22 02:51:09 EST)

I am a big fan of Jhonen Vasquez's work. Invader Zim was the show that got me into his other works, his comic books. So I was excited to read his first comic book he had ever done, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. If you pick up the book in the book or comic shop and read the title, you would be thinking "Oh this is just a kill book, blood and guts, overused violence...blah blah blah." But no you would be wrong. Aside from all the killing and profain language, the book has a storyline with depth. At times, Johnny goes off and thinks about his situation and about humanity, its very intulectual. After I read the book, I loved it. It is the type of book that I would read over and over again. And after the many times I read it, I can never get tired of it.
Basically, I am a big fan of manga (japanese comics). I'm not really into american comics (except calvin and hobbs and Archie and Jhonen vasquez stuff) But this is one type of comic I can enjoy. Its an awsome read. Buy it for yourself and see what I am talking about. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-05-18 02:07:28 EST)

This was the most dark, gorey, and violent book I have ever read...I loved it! I just sat back, read it, and laughed my a$$ off. I am a huge invader zim fan and that is what lead me to JTHM. Two of my friends read my copy--the 1st friend only read 3 pages of it and said it was extreamly freaky. the 2nd friend almost had a heart attack from excitement when she found out I had it. Okay to all you people who gave this book bad reviews, you just have no taste in good books. The only types of people who would hate Nny are annoying little preps who's minds are clouded with fashion and makeup and that s**t. I don't mind Johnny talking about why he kills all the time. It just makes him more mysterious and I like that. Anyway, this book is VERY gorey but the weird thing is, it didn't affect me and I am a squeemish person who can't stand to see people have surgery on those ER shows. Someone said that this book is rated for anyone 18 or older (I can see why) and I'm 15 and I can say this is a great gotic read.

First off, don't get all "Jeepers, I think I'll completely disregard this review because it's short and therefor has no information that I could possibly find useful AND it's written by a KID! Kid's opinions sure don't count!" with this loverly review of mine because I'm really only reviewing to say one important thing rather than reviewing and obsessing over every single detail of the book which I think is a tedious thing to do and ruins the book for you and gives you an opinion of it before you even read it which is really unhealthy. Second of all, I'm writing a kid's review because I'm lazy.
Anyway...I've been reading reviews for books of this "genre" (why must things be categorized into genres?! Can you not enjoy a book without having to know what label it is associated with so you can make sure it goes with your label?! Wouldn't want to actually ENJOY SOMETHING NEW would you?) mostly because I've read this and Squee and wanted to know what other people thought and a friend told me to read Lenore so I wanted to take a look at that too. These reviews are full of people saying "Well you could totally buy it for your kids if they're stupid and gothic and shop at hot topic but if you're a mature intelligent sort of person like me you will certainly think that all this killing and violence is ridiculous! Children like it because children think violence is funny! Teehee, silly children!" It's actually kind of funny because a big part of the book is dedicated to making fun of the people who only see it as being funny violence. It's got a bigger plot than that. It's nearly making fun of itself. The people who think they are mature block it out so easily just because they want to know that they are above silly comic books about hideous homicidal maniacs....and that goth crew who shops at hot topic? Some of them are just more open minded to things like that and let themselves enjoy it....some of them really ARE only reading it because it's associated with the genre. And if you actually DID absorb anything from this, that's exactly what the author doesn't want. It's not "stupid goth stuff". It's just "stuff". so it's black and white and there's violence....what if it's really really good (it is...) and you just didn't let yourself read it? Buy it and read it. Read it again. Try to get something out of it instead of just trying to condemn it because you don't understand. Oops...this isn't as short as I thought it would be. Jhonen Vasquez, JTHM: Director's Cut (Slave Labor Graphics, 1997)
Does anyone remember little Johnny any more? Vasquez gained much acclaim (and respect) for being the brain behind the cartoon Invader Zim in the late nineties, but before Zim, there were Johnny, Squee, and the rest of the cast of this thoroughly twisted comic. Covering the first seven issues of the comic book and a good deal of unreleased material, JTHM: Director's Cut both is and is not, in ways, an actual graphic novel. There is a full story arc to be found here, but the way we get from point A to point B is extremely disjointed. Which actually fits in quite well with the art, which is also exceptionally disjointed, and Johnny's speeches, which are... you get the idea. And thus the book's major flaw-- Johnny and his compatriots on his journey through life are not your typical comic book inhabitants. In many ways, that's a wonderful thing. (Who would read Archie and Veronica, Natural Born Killers?) But Johnny has a tendency to spend large numbers of panels at once going off on long diversions that, given the font of the lettering, tend to be hard to read. Conundrum: there's really nothing one can change, because Vasquez' visual concepts are so well married to the material that I have to think a change to a more readable (or larger) font wouldn't have given the work the same ambiance the work presently has. Still, speechifying aside (and let me rush to add that it's not annoying political speechifying, it's Johnny turning his examination inward), this is great stuff. Extremely inappropriate for anyone under the age of 18, so buy as many copies as you can and give them to all your nieces, nephews, neighbors, and all the rest of the little tots who can greatly benefit. *** ½ (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-01-19 02:54:28 EST)

JTHM is funny!!! Seriously this is a good comic book, Its funny and entertaining. I think it's got some good points but I don't know what they are.!! the sad thing is....Its missing some of the best parts. Like the meanwhiles where the guy poos his pants that was the best....and wobbly headed bob isnt in there....But its still cool. Its got some neat stuff at the back like early versions of JTHM. I think that just because Johnny has no reason for killing people doesnt mean that it sucks. He is crazy thats the POINT he doesnt have to have a good reason for it... its just funny. Happy Noodle Boy is obviously a genius,.....i want everyone to know about this....

Well, I read this whole book in about a day (hey, I had to eat and stuff).Anyways, it is about a guy named Johnny or 'nny' who tortures and kills people when they're mean to him, so he can use their blood to paint a wall. Behind the wall is a monster, which I will get to later. Jhonny is feeling suicidal, and had a girlfriend that beat him up when he tried to kill her so that she couldn't leave him, namd Devi, aka 'the one that got away', which only made the feelings worse. Brhind the feelings are the psycho doughboy, Mr.Eff and(I forgot the other's name). One wants Johnny to kill himself, and the other wants Johnny to kill people.Mind you, theese are only voices in Jhonny's head. The only sane voice is Nail Bunny, a rabbit nailed to a wall, who wants Johnny to be normal. Well, one day, in about issue 5, Johhny kills himself and goes to heaven, where people have magic powers but are content to sit all day. Whwn Johnny uses his powers to blow people's heads up, he is sent to hell, where he asks the devil why he's so lost in the world, where he finds out he's a waste lock and has to make sure the monster behind the wall never gets out, and Jhonny basicly sucks up the world's sadness. When he goes back to earth(the devil had reality on a back-up disk, so Johnny stays on earth), he gets rid of the psycho doughboys, who were sucking up his creativity. He trys to call Devi, but she tells him to get away. Sad and probobly heart-broken, Johnny goes on a quest to become emotionless. That is the enad of the series, and the last line, when Johnny is writeing in his diary, is "By the next time I write in this book, I hope to be as cold as the moon that lights this page." I give it four stars, as the plot is very deep and hard to understand, and not five beacuse of the swearing and violence. Want to see a pic of Johnny? Go to kidrawker's profile and look at the image.

Well it all began one day while hanging out with my friend and my local Brave New World comic book store.... I found this among the other goth comics, so I started reading, and right then I knew I was hooked. Johnny is this weird, homicidal guy who likes to kill people he either just meets or people he's hated for a while. It seems like he has almost new rules against his killing, either! Johnny is just an intereting character because he just IS. Well, for the past two months I've been going in the comic book store and reading it, and just yesterday I was told to leave because I'm "not allowed to read the whole thing in the store". I can't buy it because I all ready knew if my parents found it they'd burn it. Still, I love this series, and when I move out I'm buying it lol.

I love Invader Zim, so I thought I would give Johnen Vasquez's comic book a try. This comic book is nothing like the darkly funny cartoon I have enjoyed so much. Who would actually read such a thing? People who think animal cruelty is actually funny? Johnny talks to a dead bunny that he bought from a feed store, fed once, and then nailed to the wall - presumably while it was still alive. If you think that's good entertainment, then I am certainly concerned.

This book is the coolest, most disturbing, interesting, thought provoking, hilarious, sad, WACKY, best drawn comic book that was ever made. You are about to read Johnny the Homicidal Maniac! It's about a dude named Johnny C. His past is "like a picture printed on wet toilet paper", not very clear at all. The only thing we're sure of is that somehow he managed to turn himself into a homicidal maniac. He has two "doughboys" that are maniacs as well. He's got a bunny's head nailed to his wall; this bunny serves as his pathetic counselor... Nail Bunny is the only person who convinces Johnny not to kill himself. From dating girls (and then attempting to kill them) to dying and then coming back to life, the book that is JtHM is anything but boring. A must buy if: You like Jhonen Vasquez, you are really disturbing, you didn't cry in My Dog Skip. Skip this if you said the opposite to any of those.
"Do keep in mind that I might be horrendously insane." (Review Data Last Updated: 2005-11-20 13:05:44 EST)
