Do you sleep with the light on? Are you in the habit of checking your doors and windows before you go to bed? Maybe even checking under your bed? If you are about to crack open Joe Hill's chilling thriller Heart-Shaped Box, you might want to rethink your nighttime habits--Hill's story about an aging rock star (with a penchant for macabre artifacts) who buys a haunted suit online will scare you silly. But don't take our word for it. We asked bestselling authors (and masters of dark terror tales themselves) Scott Smith, and Harlan Coben to read Heart-Shaped Box and give us their take. Check out their reviews below, and you might want to pick up a nightlight while you're at it. --Daphne Durham

If you like a good old-fashioned story with real characters and a terrifying ghost, this is for you. No B.S., no gratuitous twists, just a total page-turner!

"Heart-Shaped Box" will not set any literary circles on fire, but I found the debut novel smart, imaginative and a scary ride from start to finish.
Joe Hill's first novel is a ghost story; plain and simple. He delivers a decent story that does not take the ghost story into uncharted territory, but he does make the ghost story fun and scary again. Hill creates a sustained atmosphere of tension with haunting vignettes and encounters with a ghost who has the best ghost name I have come across in a while: Craddock. The horror scenes seem to be staged at strategic intervals throughout the book, as if it was a television show and each segment between commercials was required to have a chilling moment. However, every time the story could have become repetitious, Hill surprises the reader with a smart twist to makes everything fresh again. There is also a strong emotional pull within the story that affected me. There is an underlying theme about the loneliness of death and the horrors of suffering alone. Time and again characters experience horrors alone with no one to comfort them and help them with their physical and emotional pain or their passing from life to death. This is never truer than with the story of Ruth. Although a very minor plot line, Ruth's story was told simply and powerfully. Hill's writing was a little bland and some of the imagery seemed to be taken straight from a Japanese horror film, but the story alone is worth the price of admission. It is not earth shattering in its uniqueness, but it is so well told with imaginative frights that it had me hooked and loving every mile traveled with these characters. The book is difficult to put down, it's engaging, but it's pretty shallow and doesn't leave a lot behind after you read it. The characters (of the living as well as the dead) are implausible and the plot devices feel forced and not very well researched*.
I read this right after The Kite Runner and a collection of stories by Jose Saramago. What struck me was the poverty of the narrative compared to the former and a literary aesthetic that's "teenager-at-the multiplex" compared to Saramago... Hill's New York is *much* less horrific than Hosseini's Afganistan... Or I'm just not a big fan of this kind of horror novels. *[SPOILER] The emergence of animal familiars is very "Deus ex Machina". I found an awesome ghost story. Craddock is such a vindictive ghost. I was holding on trying to figure out who will help them. But there was one thing that bothered me...long about chapter 39 or so the Mustang was hit by Craddock's truck and the airbag was deployed. This was wrong on many levels but the on that hit me was...it's a '65 Mustang that he bought from a roadie. My point in spite of his fixing it up, '65 Mustangs don't have airbags. Generally not a thing you add to a '65 Mustang. Other then that I highly recommend the book, it will keep you on the edge of your seat.

I really wanted to like this book. I bought a hardcover copy, just feeling it would become a favorite. I am sad to say I was disappointed. Such a great idea, buying a ghost on the internet, but the story never really went anywhere. Liked the first few chapters, great anticipation, but no payoff. Didn't care for any of the characters, escpecially the main character, Judas. Sorry all...not scary...not even a great story. But I did make it all the way through (more than I read some people did. And all I wanted was for it to redeem itself, it never did.

I had read a bit of Joe Hill previous to picking up this novel, but only in short story form. Like most short stories, Hill's were a bit hit and miss. In Heart Shaped Box, he really nails it.
Each of the characters are fully realized, especially the character Jude, who goes from relatable to aloof to likeable to intolerable often in one chapter. In short, he is much like the average person you meet, except he is famous. To say too much more would ruin the shock value of the book, but it is safe to say it is a story about love and redemption through a prism of pure horror. One of the best books of the year. A nicely written tale which is dark and well written. Good character and winding plot. I could not guess where it was going and how it would end. Read and enjoy!!

I don't get scared easy by books. Really. Local bookstores ask me to review pre-published Horror and Sci-Fi books, because they KNOW I can handle what other reviewers cannot.
This book give me shivers. And that says quite a bit. A Heart Shaped Box is truly fantastic. Joe Hill has created some characters than haunt, and will send readers into a nightmare land of their own. The story is fast-paced, and keeps us onto the edge of our seats. The only negative, however, is that this book does have quite a bit of sexual themes in it, as well as vulgarity. This is not for the light of heart. Overall: I recommend this to any horror lover. And the ending...whooo....I am keeping the light on when I sleep tonight! I loved this book. Joe is going to make his old man proud if he can put out writing of this quality. I got stuck in the airport recently and picked this up at one of the little stands. I finished it in the airport still waiting for my flight. Lets hope that Joe is getting something new together as soon as he can. Definately a must-read for ghost story or Stephen King or Joe Hill fans.

Firstly, when I got this book, it was because I saw it reviewed in People magazine. I do like horror, but also like several other genres of fiction. In any case, this book was incredible!! Hill pulls you in and makes you LOVE his characters, the good, the bad, AND the ugly!! This book sucked me in so fast, I couldn't put it down, but at the same time, couldn't read it at night either! Hill is an amazing story teller. This is a book I will read again, just out of sheer enjoyment. Albiet a bit disturbing in some parts, isn't that JUST what makes horror so great???? I highly recommend this book if you like horror. And for those of you don't know...........Joe Hill is Stephen King's son!!

This is a very creepy ghost story. Judas is an aging former rock star who has a passion for bizarre things and much younger goth girl's. When his personal assistant spots an email offering Jude a chance to bid on a ghost, Jude agrees and gets much more than he bargained for when his past comes back to haunt him. This is an extremely creepy and well written ghost story and character study that I'd highly recommend. Though nearly all of the characters weren't exactly what I'd define as likable or sympathetic (except for the 2 german shephards) I will definitely pick up this guys next book.

I picked up this book with a great anticipation of getting lost in a good
ghost story, but I was soon disappointed. The author has an aging rock star named "Jude" buy a suit that was worn by a dead man. It comes in a black, heart-shaped box. Okay, fine, but then Jude finds another heart-shaped box from his childhood. For me, that was too many heart-shaped boxes for one story. Also, and more importantly, the reader is introduced to the ghost too soon. The story needed more set work. Very early in the story the rock star walks right past the ghost, who is sitting in a chair. Jude tries to ignore him. That's too close, too soon, and it just didn't work for me. I'm reminded of the sequel to the "Amityville Horror." I liked that story, but in the sequel, the woman is levitating on the second page, or so it seemed. No build up. Lastly, I didn't find one character that I cared about. Believe it or not, that's important in a story. In Steven King's "Duma Key," I cared about the main character, and that kept me reading. Joe Hill's novel may grab some readers, but I have to agree with the other negative reviews. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-16 10:43:30 EST)

I really liked this book. It was a fast paced, thrilling ride. I could believe that the main character "Judas Coyne" is a real person - an aging rock star with full beard - hiding from himself and others. Being a dog lover, I really liked the fact that he had dogs that he loved. It made the character more realistic. This was a great book that had me checking the house before I turned in for the night. I look forward to reading more from Joe Hill.

I got this book on a whim, since I'd read several glowing reviews of it, including one by Neil Gaiman that got me really curious, and I'm glad I listened to that whim.
The Dickensianly-named Judas Coyne, an aging death metal rock star, gets more than he bargained for when he buys a suit that once belonged to a recently deceased hypnotist and spiritualist, to add to his collection of macabre curios. The unwelcome and unwholesome attachment to it sends him and his Goth girlfriend Georgia on a road trip through the Deep South, on which he is forced to confront many ghosts from his path before they can shake off the intruder. Joe Hill delicately balances the gruesome moments with psychological depth and flashes of black humor. It's the kind of book you'll want to bring along to read during a long summer trip, but make sure it's a plenty-long one: You'll find it hard to set it aside before you reach your destination... Heart-Shaped Box is worth the time. The book's idea of the box's contents extremely fun. The book takes a few steps from reality in spots, but the overall story is well placed. It's great to see Joe Hill's voice in horror writing. I'll read his stuff in the future based on this book.
