I liked this book the first time I read it, and liked it more when I reread the sections that most applied to me. It's packed with concise observations and recommendations, delivered in a friendly, humorous, vibrant style. I haven't seen any other books for men that address the obvious differences in men's bodies and what works best on those who are short, tall, barrel-chested, big-waisted, etc. etc. At most there is a paragraph or two; most of the advice only applies to average height slim men. I found that several of the types applied to me most directly; but "universal tips" are found throughout the section for men, so all of it is worth reading. Some of the tips in the section for women also apply to men. I would actually like Clinton and Stacy to write another book organized differently, in which they could systematically take up questions like "what colors go together?" (for the clueless newbies among us) and color theory more generally, color considerations and skin tone, different kinds of fabrics, and just clothing issues thematically.

One thing I've noticed in the several books I have read on style is how often an author contradicts himself or lays down rules that other authors contradict, or just generally states rules without much rationale that seem really idiosyncratic to me. I didn't see a single statment in Clinton and Stacy's book that fell down in this regard, and that's high praise.

Great book! Not only do you get information on how to dress your own particular body shape, but the book is filled with "universal tips" in every section. Also included is a list of items for properly stocking your closet... for both women and men. For those who need just a little help and for those who don't have a clue, this is a great buy!

I am an avid watcher of the weekly television show What Not To Wear, so when I saw this book, I added it to my Amazon wishlist. I finally got around to buying it last week, and I am about to leave my desk right now to ship it back.

Although the advice is sound, the entire book only had 3 pages relevant to me. I'm sorry, but I'm not paying $16 for a book that I can only read/use 3 pages of.

I was able to find my body type, which is not curvy, average height, and it included some good tips about fit for my body type...but the rest of the book was useless to me.

I thought the book was going to be about putting together a look, and how to shop for specific items, but it wasn't.

My recommendation to anyone who is looking for a book about style and how to put together looks is this...don't buy this book, buy The Lucky Shopping Manual: Building and Improving Your Wardrobe Piece by Piece, which actually has tons and tons of great advice for how to develop your style and what items you need, etc. They also have another great book coming out in Oct. called The Lucky Guide to Mastering Any Style: Creating Iconic Looks and Making Them Your Own, which has information about how to put together the 10 most popular fashion styles (rock and roll, bohemian, etc)...now THAT book I can't wait to buy, and I know it will be worth every penny.

What a stupid book. The entire book is poorly laid out and the information given for each body type is vague at best. For example, I'm considered curvy, average height and the book tells me to wear "a straight dress for an hourglass shape to accentuate curves." How the hell does a STRAIGHT dress do that? It doesn't even get into skintone and color which is essential!

(Hide Review...)  Good style guide with a few caveats
Reviewer Permalink
Stacy and Clinton have provided a useful guide to help both men and women max out their style quotients.

That being said, bear in mind that the authors wanted this book to be as helpful to as many people as possible. As a result: even though this book is over two hundred pages long, only a few pages (eight on average, my rough guess) could be devoted to any one unique physical type. So if you're slim and petite, eight pages of this book will be very useful to you. The rest won't. Tall and stocky? Again, eight pages of this book should be right down your alley, but that's all. Muscular and medium height? Eight pages, that's it. And so on...

Another quibble with this book is that it never really touches on the subject of matching the right color to your skin tone. We've all seen on the show where the authors will tell their makeover candidate, "Don't wear this color, it brings out the yellow in your skin more, it washes you out. THIS color, on the other hand, looks GREAT with your skin tone. Notice the difference, how it brings out the color in your cheeks and your eyes?"

You won't get that type of counseling here. So if you're wondering whether burgundy will go better with your complexion than red, or if shade X works better with your skin tone than shade Y, you're on your own. (Hopefully, future editions of this book will rectify this.)

Those criticisms aside, this book is an entertaining read and provides good, clear, easy-to-follow instructions on how to improve your wardrobe, regardless of what your body type is.

I love TLC's What Not To Wear TV program with hosts Clinton Kelly and Stacy London, but was somewhat disappointed in the book. While the book was well done with great photography and tips from the two, I found it a bit general for my purposes. I was looking for something a bit more specific to more than one perceived body flaw. And while it was interesting seeing all the models in their bathing suits, it may have been more appropriate to see them in Work / Weekend / Evening clothes of their own choosing before Clinton and Stacy got a hold of them.

DRESS YOUR BEST includes a list of wardrobe necessities for women and men, and sections on body types for each (for women, there is a petite, average height, and tall subdivision for: "Bigger on Top", "Bigger on the Bottom", "A Little Extra in the Middle", "Curvy", "Not Curvy", and "Extra Curvy". For the guys, there are eight sections: "Short", "Average", "Tall", "Athletic", "Small-Framed", "Barrel-Chested", "Tummy", and "Hips" [no subdivisions for height].) There's also a "Top Ten Questions We're Asked on an Almost-Daily Basis", an intro, an afterward, and all that fun stuff.

Each section for the women includes general "do"s and "don't"s, and each subdivision has three pictures and advice for work (assuming your job requires a suit. If you have a uniform of some sort, this bit won't be very helpful), weekend, and evening clothes. For the men, each section has the same deal with three pictures and three pages of advice for work, weekend, and evening.

I enjoyed this book because while knowing what looks good on me is obviously useful, I think that what looks good on other people and why is just as interesting. If you're with me on that, or want to share this book with a group of friends with different body types, then this is a good pick. Please keep in mind that the advice is basic, and is focused on clothes - while they have a few tips about heel hight and what color pale-skinned brunettes should wear, I'm almost positive there's nothing about hair or makeup; there's certainly nothing remotely extensive. There also isn't much about serious signature style - the point is to look chic in figure-flattering clothes.

Yes, you can buy a magazine and look at all the "dress your body" features, but this book obviously has a lot more room to deal with it. At the same time, I wouldn't recommend actually buying it (or stealing it, for that matter); I got it from the library, and while I liked it, I don't love it enough to go buy it.

I love the show and I love the book ... read the advice for what works and doesn't work for all the body types to create your own personalized list of rules. I still have comfort and convenience but I don't look like quite a "Fashion Don't" anymore.

I love the show What Not To Wear. I thought that with the experience Stacey London had working at Vogue, the book would be well written and helpful. Not so much. It's a good book for people who know nothing about fashion--much like the unfortunately dressed people they ambush. Each body type gets a few pages dedicated to casual wear, work wear, evening wear, etc. I donated my copy to the library.

This book is amazing!! And unlike what some people are saying, the rest of the book is full of little tips that anyone can use (for example, the top 5 pieces for work and top 5 pieces of statement jewelry everyone should have). This book is a thousand times better than the British version with Trinny and Susannah (who have a weird obsession with wearing dresses over pants and... um... hair accessories that look like mobiles). The only way this book could be better is if they showed like 9 different looks for each body type instead of just 3. stacey and clinton, we need more advice!!

I love What Not to Wear, but I was very disappointed in this book, especially after reading the reviews. The In Style or Lucky Manual has much more useful information. While this book has information for all types of bodies for men and women, as well as a must have wardrobe list, it is seriously lacking because there will not be more than three pages that pertain to you. If you can borrow a copy from a friend or library, and then take notes on the tips, then do that - because buying the book is a huge waste of money. The information is so limited that will be of any use to one person that it quite simply is not worth buying.

I love Stacy and Clinton's witty banter and usually sane fashion advice on their show, so when this book came out, I was thrilled. It was (and still is) unavailable at my public library, but after two or three read-throughs, I will probably be donating them my copy. The basic concept of the show is repeated here: Three workable looks for a variety of challenging body types are modelled on 26 actual people who are a stunning array of ages and sizes. It was truly amazing to see these 'plain' Janes and Joes transformed by clothing and a little grooming. However, as others have pointed out, 26 bodies doesn't begin to cover the gamut of potential figure problems out there. Clinton & Stacy are unfailingly kind and encouraging, which is refreshing, coming from their backgrounds in the snarky, body-conscious fashion world. But their biases as lifelong New York fashionistas show through in some of their selections--do most women in America need 3-inch metallic heels for day? Is your average American guy really going to wear a Godfather-style topcoat out on the town? Also, I like many readers have more than one major figure problem; what is a girl to do if she is top-heavy, with more than a little in the middle AND has short legs? My pet peeve with this book would have to be Stacy and Clinton each posing in it as a catagory. At 5'7" and a size 4, Stacy is representing the 'Average Curvy' body type. I submit that there isn't much either "Average" or "Curvy" about Stacy, who has scant need of the tips on 'creating a slimming line' in her spread. Please! What does the woman weigh, 115 pounds? Clinton is the men's "Tall" feature. At 6'4" the boy is indeed a tall drink of water, but his looks are essentially Clinton (= sartorial choices for a NYC fashion maven who is a gay man). This is a perfect glossy read for an afternoon, and has some valuable advice but is too bulky to take shopping, and too limited in scope to refer to very often. Borrow this, or share a copy with several friends.

I really liked this book but I wouldn't recommend buying it. I would try and find it at a local book store and look through it, making notes. The sections pertaining to each body type are very short. The most useful information for my type consisted of three whole pages, the rest of the book being useless for me. Once you read "your section" or body type you don't really need the book any more. Just my opinion.

(Hide Review...)  Fun to read, very instructive
Reviewer Permalink
Though the 26 body types are by far not enough (well, I guess there were limitations to the size of a book), it was very instructive to read. The photographs are much more illustrative than the usual drawings in books of this type. I laughed a lot and I learned a lot. I had problems with the american sizes, they seemed to be downsized a bit, measurements (bust, waist, ...) would have been helpful. Plus, I never wear high heels, due to a knee damage, and a lot of other women I know wear flats all the time, too. For me, the style in this book relied a lot on high heels, and some alternatives would have been helpful.

I liked the style, classic, simple and beautiful, and the way how Clinton and Stacy really found the beauty in all their models. It takes a loving eye to do, the loving eye one should have for oneself, and this is maybe the most important lesson in this book.

Reviewer Permalink
I really wanted to LOVE this book since I am fan of the show, but I must be honest and say that once you find your own body type, the book is pretty useless. There is limited information on style itself (beyond body type) and limited information on where to shop, etc. You'd honestly come out cheaper going to a local bookstore (i.e. BORDERS), grabbing this book, looking up your body type, taking a mental snapshot of the info and putting the book back on the shelf because that's all you'll be able to do with it once you get it home.

I will keep and use as a reference guide for friends and family with OTHER body types, but as a guide to consistently refer to over time, it is very limited. This is more of a BASIC BEGINNER's guide. Don't expect this one to be full of dog-eared pages from consistent use. The Lucky Style manual has MUCH more depth. If you're like me, and you rely on product reviews to help make purchasing decisions, take solace in the fact that I wouldn't steer you wrong.

I absolutely love What Not to Wear on tv and I love Clinton and Stacey. That being said, I'm not so thrilled about the book. It covers every, and I mean every, different type of body in the book. Sounds great, but one ends up finding very little information that is specific to them.

For example, one might have wide hips. There is a section devoted to this issue in their book. That section covers a few basics and that's really it. One might find a couple of other sections that apply to them, but the rest of the book wouldn't be helpful, unless looking up information for friends.

Not a bad book and some nice ideas in there, but not very comprehensive.

I find myself referring to this book time and again because of the beautiful color pictures. Many other style books use artist's drawings, but this book features real live people (not professional models with their ridiculous Barbie proportions) with different body types and this adds another dimension. You will be amazed at some of the transformations, and you instantly see what the authors are talking about - it was easy to actually apply the guidelines.

Regarding the reviews which suggest that only a few pages are relevant to any one person - this is not true! Many tips which are relevant to everyone are included in the body types which may not exactly match yours. I found all the examples interesting and informative.

No one style book can do it all. For fantastic information regarding fit, I recommend The Pocket Stylist by Kendall Farr. For figuring out your style and many other organizational tips, I suggest Nothing to Wear? by Jesse Garza and Joe Lupo. With these three books, you are set to transform your wardrobe no matter what your body type and save money by minimizing the wrong purchases.

(Hide Review...)  The Uncomplete Guide to Finding the Style That's Right for Your Body
Reviewer Permalink
This book was not helpful to me at all because my body type (the inverted triangle) was not listed. Although it may be helpful to others I think the book lacks detail illustration and specification on the body types. The book claims dressing tips for 26 body types because they included sub-categories but in reality there are only 14 body types mentioned. Here are the body types they mention:

Women: Bigger on Top, Bigger on the Bottom, A Little Extra in the Middle, Curvy, Not Curvy, Extra Curvy.

Men: Short, Average, Tall, Athletic, Small-Framed, Barrel-Chested, Tummy, Hips

Many people fall into two or three of these category making it difficult to pick a body type to dress for. I myself have broad shoulders and no hips placing myself in the "Bigger on top" and "Not Curvy" type. This book just doesn't make sense.

Hardly worth the money considering it is mostly a picture book. You can get the same information out of a newstand magazine for $2.00

I find their book more genuine to my body shape than Trinny's books. They gave some great ideas to put together and layer clothes.

I think they should have added a few more body types, and maybe some more goals for how you want to look. Still, the information behind their selections translates to some excellent advice. I got this for my wife and found myself enjoying it as well.

this book is for YOU...Stacy and Clinton have been seen on my TV as long as "What Not to Wear" has been on TLC, and I've loved every moment of it...if you've seen the show, then you will get just what you see on TV in book form. I love the fact that there are pictures of each body type and suggestions for what to wear with those certain body types. Want to look your best? Then buy this book...

While I love the show and find it extremely helpful, the book was not. Once you find your body type, the rest of the book is a waste. I didn't find it helpful at all. The Lucky Shopping Manual is like a fashion bible! so much more helpful and explained what you needed to have a complete wardrobe.

This book was helpful, but could have been more so. I read through every body type. I found two body types that could relate to me. I couldn't figure out which one applied to me though. For example, average height, curvy figure shows Stacy as the model. Although I am of average height and have a curvy figure, I am by no stretch of the imagination a size 4 (like Stacy). The next figure I thought may apply to me was the tall, curvy model. Although her proportions were more like my own, I am not tall (over 5'7'). So, I had to take both of the models and try to pull what I could use out of the three outfits given as examples of what to wear. My advice would be to read about all of the body types because advice is given that applies to every body type during most of the examples, like what type of heel to wear with what hemline. Definitely not a be all and end all book of what not to wear. The book also includes body types for men (not helpful to me, but fun to read).

I am a huge fan of the TV show but was very disappointed in this book.
It took a total of 5 minutes to find my body type and height. They offer a few do's and don't and show you three styles for work, evening and weekend. Once you have read those 6 or 7 pages the books is done and is of no use anymore, just pass it on to another body type. . . very disappointing. I was hoping to get info on how to shop, where to shop, fabric info, cuts, designer who are best for me and designer secrets. Pretty much no new info.
