“I rehabilitate dogs. I train people.” —Cesar Millan
There are at least 68 million dogs in America, and their owners lavish billions of dollars on them every year. So why do so many pampered pets have problems? In this definitive and accessible guide, Cesar Millan—star of National Geographic Channel’s hit show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan—reveals what dogs truly need to live a happy and fulfilled life. From his appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show to his roster of celebrity clients to his reality television series, Cesar Millan is America’s most sought-after dog-behavior expert. But Cesar is not a trainer in the traditional sense—his expertise lies in his unique ability to comprehend dog psychology. Tracing his own amazing journey from a clay-walled farm in Mexico to the celebrity palaces of Los Angeles, Cesar recounts how he learned what makes dogs tick. In Cesar’s Way, he shares this wisdom, laying the groundwork for you to have stronger, more satisfying relationships with your canine companions. Cesar’s formula for a contented and balanced dog seems impossibly simple: exercise, discipline, and affection, in that order. Taking readers through the basics of dog psychology and behavior, Cesar shares the inside details of some of his most fascinating cases, using them to illustrate how common behavior issues develop and, more important, how they can be corrected. Whether you’re having issues with your dog or just want to make a good bond even stronger, this book will give you a deeper appreciation of how your dog sees the world, and it will help make your relationship with your beloved pet a richer and more rewarding one. Learn what goes on inside your dog’s mind and develop a positive, fulfilling relationship with your best friend In Cesar’s Way, Cesar Millan—nationally recognized dog expert and star of National Geographic Channel’s hit show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan—helps you see the world through the eyes of your dog so you can finally eliminate problem behaviors. You’ll learn: • What your dog really needs may not be what you’re giving him • Why a dog’s natural pack instincts are the key to your happy relationship • How to relate to your dog on a canine level • There are no “problem breeds,” just problem owners • Why every dog needs a job • How to choose a dog who’s right for you and your family • The difference between discipline and punishment • And much more! Filled with fascinating anecdotes about Cesar’s longtime clients, and including forewords by the president of the International Association of Canine Professionals and Jada Pinkett Smith, this is the only book you’ll need to forge a new, more rewarding connection with your four-legged companion. Also available as a Random House AudioBook From the Hardcover edition. |

Fans of the National Geographic Channel's The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan will be grateful for Cesar's Way, an accessible guide to help new and current dog owners better understand the needs of their beloved pets. If you are not yet a fan, try to catch a couple of episodes of the remarkable show--you will be amazed, impressed, and motivated to create a healthier, more fulfilling relationship with your dog. In Cesar's Way, Cesar explains that dogs are not complicated, and despite what various owners think--not human. They rely on three key elements in their lives: exercise, discipline, and affection (in that order). "Problem dogs" can be attributed to "problem owners," owners who don't understand and misinterpret their dog's behavior. Cesar's Way is really a training program for dog owners, with chapters devoted to understanding the "power of the pack," taking responsibility for "how we screw up our dogs," and learning how to manage aggression. Cesar's book (a must-have for new and old dog owners) moves beyond basic obedience school techniques, and teaches owners how to change unwanted behavior by better understanding their "best friends." --Daphne Durham

Cesar Millan's Top 5 Tips for Going to the Dog Park 1. Make sure your dog is spayed or neutered, has all her shots, and is in good health. Under no circumstances should you bring a sick dog to a dog park! 2. Do not use the dog park as a substitute for the walk! If you drive to the park, leave your car a block away and take your dog on a vigorous walk of at least thirty-five minutes to drain some of her energy. Never take an over-excited dog to the park. 3. While at the park, don't "punch out" on your calm-assertive leadership. Be aware of your dog at all times, and take responsibility for her behavior. 4. A calm-submissive dog will not attract another dog's aggression--but an excited dog, a weak, timid dog, or an aggressive dog can become a fight-magnet. 5. Know your dog! If your dog has poor social skills, is overly fearful or is dog aggressive, or if you have not yet established your calm-assertive leadership with your dog, find a more controlled way to introduce her to the company of other dogs, such as "play dates" with one or two other dog owners.

Carefully read the book, and then read it again. With lots of exercise and work we turned our "wild" biting and attacking 8 month old rescued Lab-dalmation "Layla" into a sweet dog that is actually quite bright and can fetch and hike for hours, and sit and stay. We even have her getting along with the cat. We almost took her back to the SD Humane society, she was attacking our 12 yr old German shepherd and any other dog or person she saw during a walk. But with Cesar's help we didn't fail our dog, "Layla". She still needs work out on the trail, but what a difference.

Good auto-biography and concepts but I would have liked a little more "how to". Learned a few tips for my new puppy and I see where I made mistakes with my dog but would have liked more direction on how to correct bad behavior.

I absolutely love watching Mr. Millan's show, and think that the way he understands and interacts with dogs is magical, so when our family got a chihuahua puppy, we also bought this book, assuming we'd learn how to raise Sam. While the book is full of interesting advice and understanding of dog psychology, I find it lacking in techniques to actually help you deal with common dog problems. For example: no advice on housebreaking, chewing, etc. The book is an interesting read, but I'm still searching for the one that will give me more detailed exercises to work on with my chi (I'll still watch Dog Whisperer on tv, though!).

A very interesting and original approach to the dog psychology. It changes your perspective on how the dog thinks and reacts and improves your understanding on how to correct undesired dog problems

I have never watched Cesar Millan's television show, but my petsitter talks about him a lot so I was curious about this book.
This book is a fun read for dog lovers, especially the early chapters in which the author describes his life and how he came to be the famed dog trainer that he is today. It is also fun to read about the celebrities he has worked with (Oprah, Jada Pinkett Smith) and how their dogs walk all over them. However, do not choose this book if you are looking for detailed advice about dog training or correcting problem behavior. Although the title may imply otherwise, all the solutions here are very vague and generally fall into one of the following categories: you (the pack leader) need to work on "calm-assertive energy," you need to take your dog for a half hour walk, or you (still) need to work on "calm-assertive energy" so that your dog will have "calm-submissive energy." Unfortunately, Millan doesn't really tell the reader HOW to obtain that kind of energy, other than perhaps by emulating Oprah. Although the stories of dogs rehabilitated by the author are heartwarming, ultimately the novelty wears thin because not much insight is given into how the dogs' behaviors are turned around (other than by the author's "calm-assertive energy.") This book would have been much more interesting had the author spoken more specifically about fewer cases, or made the book shorter. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-14 04:08:00 EST)

There are SO many better books out there. This book shows you how to shove your dog around and justify harsh techniques that were old in the 80s - not how to actually TRAIN your dog.

I really liked this book because it was not about a "how to" but on how to "relate" to your dogs and understand them. Now, everytime I am in training mode or walking my dogs I make sure I check to see what type of mood I am in and then I close my eyes, take a deep breath and imagine myself walking on a deserted beach (calm part). I am already assertive so that's good! I do get frusterated but that is where the deep breath comes in. And you know what...It works! Your dog(s)can feel your energy. what a big difference! I am now starting to read his recommendations in the back of his books just so I have a better understanidng with my canines!

This book was easy to read and really enjoyable. It has given me lots of ideas about how to raise a happy and healthy dog. We have just got a new puppy and it's good to have read Cesar's book right at the beginning. It's so easy to humanise dogs when what they really need is to be treated like a dog! You can just imagine Cesar's talking to you as you read through the pages of his book.

The book was def. a good book, dont get me wrong, but it didn't exactly live up to it's title. It says it teaches you how to correct common dog problems, but instead of teching you, or giving you advice, all I got was examples of what he did without a lot of explanation. He said what he was doing, not how or why, to help me better understand how to correct my own dogs problems. And the first half of the book was Cesar's life story, which, I thought, was kind of unnecesary information. Tell me how to fix my dog, not how you jumped the Mexican/American boarder...

I have been a 25-year dog owner and rescuer. Before a career ending injury, the majority of dogs that I rescued where found out in the country where I delivered mail. People would just dump them or move and abandon their dogs. I spent fortunes getting them back in good health, but because of them being abandoned, most of them suffered significant trust issues. I would love them and think that was enough. It was, for a majority, but there were a few, mostly dominating males, who the healthier and stronger they got, the more dangerous they became to our family. Unfortunately, with our not having the information provided in this book, we had them put down. There is not a dog owner, rescuer, vet or behavioralist who should skip reading this book. It should be a required reading for everyone. I found the reason why one of my own dogs thought it was ok to bite me while I trimmed his nails and tended to his teeth. As I am disabled, I am not able to give my dogs the long walks suggested, but I am certainly able to do more than I have been, and discipline is now a far greater priority than love (not that they don't get tons of it). They seem to respect me, obey me and have a greater desire to please me. This book has done wonders for my relationship with them, which is what it is all about anyway, isn't it? While some of the concepts in this book are valid - the need for the handler to be 'in control' and the concept that dogs are not people and need to be treated as such, the methods used by Cesar Milan are not training as much as they are flooding, as explained by another reviewer. At first I was curious about his methods (based solely on his results) until I saw him going after an especially aggressive dog with a tennis racket. And when he continued to bait this dog with the racket when the dog was in its crate, that was all I needed to see. His excuse - using the tennis racket was an extension of his arm, so he wouldn't get bit?!?!? Basically, he's a bully and is using negative experiences to bully the dogs into submission. Ever listen to him talk to women handlers/owners? Typical machismo. No surprise then, that his tactics mirror those sentiments.
Remember - this guys a dog groomer, not a trained animal behaviorist. Would you let your barber give you tips on how to raise your kids? Please...avoid this guy like the plague. Need behavior help? Contact your local shelter or behaviorist for tips. Not this guy. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-28 01:12:24 EST)

It works if your willing to change your attitude toward the whole training process and most importantly invest QUALITY time into it!!!
I read this book in 2 days. I just couldn't put it down! Cesar's approach makes you think and re-evaluate everything you ever knew of training and dogs in general. I believe he is a sincere man. His love for dogs is evident. As he says though, love isn't enough. I applied his techniques to both of my Dogs with great results. The WALK is most important before anything else. The thsst sound works great with my dogs when I feel they're pulling away from the calm-submissive state. I'm just about done with his 2nd book. "Becoming the Pack Leader". This book is more explainatory as far as the behaviors/personalities of your specific dog, and what to do. It also explains in great detail ALL the tools (leashes, harnesses, collars etc...) for training, the pros and the cons, and how to use them effectively. I'm not one to jump on the band wagon when it comes to a new fade, or "guru", but Cesar Millan's realness and compasion for ALL living things really struck my heart. I feel through these books I have become a better person as well. I recommend any Ceasar Millan product. I probably won't go out and get all the food, dog beds, toys etc... but as far as the learning tools I'm there!!! Peace!! Stay Calm-Assertive In the words of Bob Barker, "Help control the pet population, have your pets spayed or neutered goodbye everyone!!!" (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-25 12:11:14 EST)

Cesar talked a lot about himself, his background, etc. Which is fine, drops a lot of names (repeatedly) and doesn't really get into any training facts. Guess it wasn't what I was looking for.

I purchased this product after viewing a collection of Cesar's dvd's. They don't provide "How to..." for training a dog to do "Things"(sit, down, etc.) but they are very insightful in understanding how to have a good relationship with your pet as dog and master. The book has helped us get off to a good start with our new puppy.

Maureen and Gary Ross wrote the nothing short of incredible TRAIN YOUR DOG, CHANGE YOUR LIFE, using insights from the Delta Society, which uses dog training in human therapy. (Available on Amazon and Kindle).
Cesar's popular training method of exercise, discipline (now called positive reward, gentle training, whispering, etc.), and then love, as well as insights about the energy we radiate, are truly innovative. NOW, he's likely read or seen the Ross's work, or read up on the Delta Society, and is actively writing/ speaking about HUMAN interaction as it relates to dog training. The key human insight in all this is: We TEACH others how we want to be treated. If our dogs (or our human companions!) treat us badly, it's because we are teaching them, often unconsciously, to do so. The insight, learned a decade ago with birds and dolphins who can simply swim or fly away, is that negative reinforcement doesn't work, but only TEACHES the student to treat US badly. Positive energy, plenteous rewards, and not reinforcing the negative treat the student to treat us well, and behave well. We train many species in our petcarelicense.com programs and at our clinics, and are learning with the Rosses that HUMAN relationships can benefit from understanding Dog training. A dog is a creature molded out of pure love, but to understand behavior problems, radiating calm energy is reassuring to start, lots of play and exercise is a path to showing our gentle but alpha status, and "discipline" is about giving lots of string cheese for the times we're treated right (the behavior is appropriate). Prediction: Cesar will be coming out with more and more books that show how learning dog training can help with every aspect of ALL our relationships, including human! I bought this book for my daughter who just adopted a 5 year old Chihuahua, Lulu from a puppymill. I know Cesar's knowledge will be a great help to them because Lulu is afraid of everything. She's never been socialized and will need a lot of patience. My daughter needs training too.

I have to admit, I was skeptical about Ceasars methods. No that he could do it, but that we would be able to read a book and get results like on his TV series. I just did not believe, we could make his magic work for us as well. We have 3 Shih Tzus, and they get on very well, but my wife read this book, and they are now a pack :)
I never could walk them together on leashes, as a matter a fact I never used leashes. We just went out into the yard and they did thier Business. Well my wife has adpoted Ceasars methods, which include walking the dogs, and exercise as well as affection. It works, even for a simple guy like me who just wants a lap dog :) Page 57 sums up the relationship, I had with my favorite pet. All love and affection. I lost her in a tragic accident, at my own hand. After time, we added two more for a total of 3 Shh Tzu's. I still wanted that "all love and affection" dog Trixie was, but realized I had to take Ceasar's words to heart. From page 57...."please open your mind to the possiblilty that your dog may be missing some of the things she needs to be happy in and fufilled as a dog". Well I opened my mind (with my wifes help :)) and I really beilieve the dogs are happier. That line would be my best advice for anyone to read this book. Open your mind, to what Ceasar is teaching and you will find that with some time and patience this book, his work, will give you a better relationship with your dog or dogs. Thank you Ceasar, you may have saved my marriage as well. LOL :) Bill Gonzalez (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-18 13:11:07 EST)

I love dogs. I have 3 of them. I am lazy, though, and never walked them because I was tired, I didn't feel like it, I never trained them to walk on the leash without pulling me, etc. I was neglecting my dogs.
Then I started to watch Cesar's show. He grilled into me, DOGS NEED EXERCISE!!! I began to feel guilty. I started to walk my dogs. Because they weren't trained by me, they pulled me all over the neighborhood. It isn't very pleasant. I found a dog park, I started taking them. Then I read this book. Cesar says dog parks are fine, but aren't a replacement for daily walks with the pack leader! GRR. More work for me. LOL. Now I'm motivated, reading more books on dog training and considering taking my dogs, one at a time, to obedience classes. They deserve the best I can give them and it won't hurt me any to walk them every day. I just love Cesar's positive attitude and his no nonsense approach to how to look at man's best friend. They're animals! We have to realize they're not people! They deserve the best we can give them, because they give their best to us. I thank Cesar for changing my relationship with my dogs and making me a better dog owner. I recommend this book. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-14 05:10:20 EST)

Cesar's Way: The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems
I've been reading his books slowly. I have so many books to read so I'm savoring him. I've enjoyed learning about his background growing up in Mexico and coming to this country to persue his dream and his consequent success. What I've learned I've shared with the rest of the family who find him interesting. Why no one else ever considered the psychology of dogs but Cesar Milan is remarkable. It took a young man growing up on a farm with working dogs to bring his experience and observations to dog training. I'm not even a dog person; I have always lived with cats. Recently I moved in with my daughter and granddaughters. They have a beagle who has a few bad habits that I'm trying to deal with so I began watching Cesar's show. And that's when I discovered this body of little known knowledge and found it fascinating. And then I learned that there were books. I haven't read enough about correcting the problems and I don't know if I will have any support from the rest of the family but I have found discovered a new interest-dog psychology. Thank you Cesar Milan. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-30 01:03:20 EST)

Having seen Cesar on TV, I was a bit disappointed in this book after reading a few chapters. It seems to go on and on and on and on about the same thing - being the leader and giving off calm-assertive energy. OK! OK! We get the point!! However, I LOVE to watch Cesar and he is right on the money about dogs. I just wish it was more info on working with my dog than his philosophy (even though he is 100% right).

I enjoyed reading this book. Although I didn't always agree with everything, there is much merit in what Cesar teaches. I do notice the difference that exercise makes in my dog's disposition. I don't have time to do as much of the exercise as he suggests, but I now make it an important part of my day to make sure we get our walk done!
Whether you use this as a dog training guide, or get some tips from it, it is easy to read and very engaging! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-26 03:01:10 EST)

This is an excellent book, it all makes sense. Yep, I was one of those people who spoiled the dog and didn't get all the responses I expected - although never a red-zone dog lucky me! My new pup is happier then ever. It's an eye opener. I'm sure some people have a problem with the fact that they may be creating the issues their dogs have (and that they could be wrong in the "training" they're doing), most do not want to take responsibility for their own faults/health etc. so to take responsibility for their animals....this would be tough. Great reading for all dog owners.

I wasn't, and still ain't, mentally ready to listen to Cesar. Maybe it's because I'm a stupid, spoiled American. I pay the mechanic and he fixes my car. But it turns out that there's all kinds of ongoing maintenance that I need to perform on my car - check the tire air, change the wiper blades (yeah! change the wiper blades!), and so on. Listening to Cesar is like listening to my mechanic tell me that maintenance is also my responsibility. I tell you, I nod, but I don't get it. And that's my disconnect with the book.
When you watch him on TV, what you see is Problem / Solution. It's not that simple in real life. Real life is Problem / Struggle / Struggle / Struggle / Better / Struggle / Struggle / Better... One day, I'll be mature enough to listen to the book and it will earn it's five stars. Until then, my pup will struggle with me. But I'm on the right road today, with the right understanding, and absolutely credit the book with drawing the map. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-16 01:03:11 EST)

This book has several pages of gems about the human-dog relationship. I found these gems, that could have been summarized on a page or two, to be quite useful in working with a rescued Australian Shepherd. To get these gems with an explanation you will need to read Cesar's story which is interesting enough but does not carry the book.
So read the book for these gems, essentially: (1) That you treat a dog like a dog, and not a human baby. Cesar's point is that we act in ways that are counter-intuitive to dog culture. We do not realize that dogs first communicate with the nose, then the eyes (watching and decoding our moves and their meanings) and then ears. (2) That we must be calm-assertive (or what I prefer to call calm-confident) -- that if you are nervous your dog will pick it up, that if you get angry your dog will find a way to resist the very behavior that would have made you happy. (3) That exercise, and lots of it, is critical to a calm, balanced dog (key concept here is balanced and stable -- most dog pets aren't). That discipline (meaning consistent application of rewards for desirable behavior, and interrupting undesirable behavior) is critical to a dog that knows its place in YOUR pack, and that affection, which is LAST on Cesar's list, should be carefull meted out so as not to thoughtlessly enforce undesirable behavior. If you are lazy and will not exercise your dog properly, get a goldfish! If you are undisciplined yourself, get a pet rock! If you need affection, do not make it your dog's problem. Get a lover! Thanks, Cesar, for an enjoyable book! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-15 01:04:13 EST)

I learned about energy shift needed in oneself to acquire change in the dog's behaviour. Before reading the book I did not get how he did that transformation in the dogs just watching the videos, I needed to read the book before I "got it".
It helped me change my life with my dogs and with people as the same energy is needed to deal with oneself and others. Louise (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-28 01:05:43 EST)

Cesar does it again with a great book. If you're an animal lover overall with horses as well, then Joe Camp's book "Soul of A Horse" will also touch your heart and teach you many things about animals and life in general. The Soul of a Horse: Life Lessons from the Herd

Cesar's Way: The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems
I recently became the owner of a four year old Standard Poodle (named Blinky). The minute Blinky walked in the door it became very clear that it wanted to be the boss and run the show. As time progressed Blinky became more assertive and was dictating to me what the routine was. Corrective action was urgently needed. I had never heard of Cesar Millan before but decided to puchase the book based on other reviews I read. I have found the book to be brillant and have quickly achieved remarkable results with Blinky. I now clearly understand the importance of demonstrating to Blinky that I am the pack leader and NOT treating Blinky like she is a human. I have read some negative comments about Cesar Millan's tranining methods but all I can say is that they work and I have not had to spend hundreds of dollars going to a dog training specialist. I recently purchased a pure-bred Standard Schnauzer and was looking for a source to help me get the most out of my relationship with my pet. Luckily I do not take delivery on this animal until early June because I needed to read this masterpiece by "The Dog Whisperer" of Nat. Geo. fame to disabuse myself of some erroneous notions about dog ownership.
Cesar's Way will one day go down as a classic work on dog behavior/animal communication. Mr. Millan, drawing on years of anecdotal experience with canines, illustrates in "human terms" just what makes our four-legged friends tick. Problems with our furry friends arise when we relate to them using human psychology as our frame of reference instead of "dog psychology." What exactly "dog psychology" is, I'll leave it to this wonderful book to enlighten you. Suffice to say, it is NOT the way you would think one would care for your beloved four-legged member of your family. Written with wit, compassion, but unapologetically (Cesar is "pro-dog"), Cesar's Way has heightened my anticipation; I am anxious to see how my relationship with my beloved Otto von Schnauzen evolves over the weeks, months, and years. As his "pack leader," it is encumbant upon me to meet his needs, and not simply look to him to meet some deep, lost emotional need. Cesar Millan has done a great service to the animal kingdom, and the well-being of dogs everywhere with this wonderful, enlightening book. I highly recommend this book as an "owner's manual" for your dog. This is a book you're likely to read time and again. I, personally, am on my third reading. Just the fact that he has correcting has the title of the book puts me off. More so Cesar is not into teaching anything to any dog rather focused on punishing them and making the owners feel they are "in contro". The set backs and consequences of this type of training dogs are immense and never once mentioned on his book leaving the reader feeling that all these techniques are efective when really they are nothing but abusive and uninformed.

I found this book to be extremely eye opening. Although a lot of what I read didn't make me happy, it does make total sense. I was hoping it would tell you how to become more calm assertive, but I think Be The Pack Leader might do that more. I would definetely recommend this book.

Cesar Millan is truly in tune with dogs.
This is one fantastic book, not loaded down with an autobiography or given over to "name dropping" of celebrities. Millan is so transparently a down to earth, real time guy who has what it takes to communicate with dogs and to pass on that knowledge to their human owners. Millan's techniques, while ridiculed by other lesser "behaviourists" or "trainers", get to the heart of the matter immediately with no "fluffing" of the situation. The techniques used by Millan are completely dog friendly, non threatening, non invasive and are not cruel to the animal. In a truly professional manner, Millan assesses each dog on its own situation - he does not have a "1 solution fits all" approach to the animals, simply because that cannot and does not work. Millan, correctly, describes his subjects as "Animal, dog, breed, name" and subtly shows that the owners or handlers can also be categorised the same way, "Animal, homo-sapien, Caucasian/Asian/Latin, name". If owners can see that, then the relationship between man and dog becomes so much more "calm". Millan is one of the true geniuses of the dog world. Other trainers, sit up and take note. Treat a dog like a dog and suddenly the balance of the relationship equalises. It is so simple, all it takes is that basic understanding. Highly recommended and highly readable. I purchased this book for a friend who may be kind to her nice dog but is also extremely inattentive to him, actually telling me one day (to my utter dismay) that she "takes good care of her dog because she feeds him twice a day". She also told me she didn't want to train him to go on walks. After standing by for 4 frustrating years and doing what I could to get the dog out walking on my own, I decided on yet one more approach to see if she would connect with him: I gave her this book. I read it first and liked it a lot. My friend read it as well and as a result started to train her dog following Cesar's methods! At least she was intrigued enough to give it a try. I hope her enthusiasm lasts... Thank you Cesar! Your influence reaches far beyond _dog_ training :)

I think if Cesar Milan ran this country, we would all be better off. This book, of course, is first-rate. We love it. Cesar is so anecdotal - and he uses techniques that work.

All the dog advice you can find on his show. It's better to learn from too because you can see him in action. The book goes over how Cesar started, how he got to America and how he became a trainer which is what I really wanted to know. Great book.

When I got a terrier mix from the local shelter I was delighted, entertained, frustrated, and completely perplexed. She's the smartest dog I've ever had, behaved admirably "in the ring" but was completely incorrigible at home or off leash. However, there was hope! I hadn't even finished this book before I noticed changes in her behavior - I guess she just needed a pack leader, but first I had to be guided, inspired, and trained. Thanks, Cesar, from Halley and me. I LOVE this little dog and you helped us learn how to live together!

Cesar uses a fundamental technique commonly known as "flooding". Flooding an animal basically means forcing it to do a particular behavior. In my experience this should be used as a last resort and only in certain circumstances. In some of Millan's programs he can be seen ignoring obvious `cut off signals" from the animals. Cut off signals in dog behavior are well documented and distinct. Any experienced behaviorist will unequivocally give a recommendation not to continue an interaction with an animal displaying multiple cut off signals. The results of ignoring this advice can result in aggressive reactions. A well known Vegas showman was recently nearly mortally wounded by a Tiger because he ignored cut off signals. Sound advice is to do thorough research into the latest positive reinforcement techniques that are currently becoming main stream. Rewarding your dog for doing the right thing will give you the closest bond with you animal friend. Careless adherence to Cesar Millan's techniques might get you a trip to the E.R.
