This book is small and really just a good overview of what Bonsai's are like. This is sort of a starter guide, explaining the ins and outs of Bonsai. If you're just beginning raising the trees, this is a good book to add to your collection. If you, however, already have a knowledge base about raising and caring for Bonsai, you can move along to a more comprehensive book.

This was a good beginner book for my husband when we bought our first bonsai, although we wish there was more descriptions on trimming it and how much water to give it. We think we have some sort of ficus bonsai, but couldn't find it in the book, so we're hoping what we are doing will keep it alive! Good tips on most aspects of keeping them thriving.

This was a good book for getting ideas and then going to the web for more research. A great introduction. I thought it could have been a little more detailed so I gave it a 4. Worth it for those doing bonsai with little and no experience.

(Hide Review...)  Not nearly enough information for a beginner
Reviewer Permalink
This is basically just a picture book with captions. It will familiarize you with different styles and concepts, but does not provide any useful "tips" as the title suggests, nor does it provide any information which I would consider essential to learning bonsai, so much as just understanding what it is and what it looks like. I bought this book as a beginner and having read it, am no more informed than I was before.

The information available for free on the internet is far more in-depth and useful than this book. I'm leaving it at two stars because the pictures really are great and show a wide range of design options. I will keep the book to use those as a reference, even though the book does little if anything to explain how to accomplish those designs.

The DK Bonsai book is a help for anyone wanting to learn how to "Bonsai" or learn what kind of trees can be used in this fashion. It is basic and has great photos, as in the DK tradition.

Disclaimer, I just started this addicting hobby so my knowledge base is less than a neophyte. However, I found this book to be informative regarding basic styles and techniques on how to begin to look at trees and terminology I found on the bonsai web pages. Good book to get more hooked on this fascinating art form.

I bought this for my son who is interested in all things Japanese. This is the DK book series at its best, very informative, well illustrated and covering a wide range of material. Probably not enough information to start cultivating trees on your own; but a very good introduction to Bonsai.

If you are interested in Bonsai and have the chance the collection at the Nation Arboretum in Washington DC is worth the trip.

(Hide Review...)  ** A Great little book to inspire you to get started. **

I have always liked bonsai and had been meaning to start growing a few for over 20 years.
But like so many things in life I had somehow put it off till now.
Within a week of receiving this book I had finally started growing my very own trees.
How can you not love a book that inspires you to action like that?
It has a lot of info for the beginner and the pictures are pretty nice to look at.
Sure, I'll probably buy a more thorough book later on with more detailed and complete coverage. But this book never promised to be the know all encyclopedia of bonsai.
I judge books by if they deliver what the title implies, if they convey the information in a clear and concise manner, and most importantly if they inspire you to take action and apply the knowledge. Because just knowing something but not putting it to use is worthless.
This book does all of the above.
For just getting the basics and getting started I don't see how you could not like this little inexpensive book.

(Hide Review...)  A Good Basic Bonsai Book To Begin With!
Reviewer Permalink
I decided to get into raising Bonsai trees a number of years ago but had zero knowledge of what I was getting into - so my wife bought me this book. This book will take an absolute beginner like me and get them functioning rather quickly. The book makes it simple and easy with lots of photos and lots of information.

It was a pleasure to just sit and read this book - the color photos and such make for wonderful daydreaming. Of course, none of my trees look as good as anything in the book - but I am enjoying the hobby and love the book! I would recommend this book as a first manual or guidebook.

Upon recieving this book as a gift from my late husband, I discovered that the information given in this book was quite unsatisfactory. As a seasoned Bonsai enthusiast, I found it degrading and demeening and an insult to my intelligence. Any serious Bonsai lover would know enough to realize the suggestions given in this manual are foolish and obscene.
I hope this helps.

Reviewer Permalink
After looking through this book, I wasn't very impressed with how to care for the bonsai. Don't get me wrong, the pictures were great and I'm sure that they might be of help to others. (just not me). I was really dissappointed in the lack that this book has (I got more from just the internet alone)!!!
Oh well, I tried and it will be an added book now for me to look at sometimes as well as take up space!
Good Luck all!

I got that book because people recommended it and it wasn't that expensive. I think that the book is great. It has many colorful pictures that show exactly what you have to do and every single one of 101 tips that are in that book, come in handy. The size of the book is really small which makes like a reference or a guide. I recommend this book to any beginner.

Reviewer Permalink
As a beginner (one and a half year) in this art, the book -my second one- is really a handy one. This is, by its price, size, photo quality and "right to the point comments", I consider it very useful for beginners. It has lot of photos of how to start a bonsai from a nursery plant. Not like some books that show masterpieces, but do not show you the bridge to get to them. I mean, imagine a "How to Paint Book", full of Van Gogh, Picasso, etc. masterpieces without showing you sketches, drawing materials and intermediate steps. I carry it along every time, to keep "watching it", not just words.

This book is paramount for anyone who is thinking of getting started, or just keeping up a bonsai tree. Beautifully illustrated with step-by-step pictures in full color on every page, and small enough to put in your pocket, it couldn't be better.

The information is presented in an easy forthright manner making it comfortable for the user to jump right in. I picked up this book after the demise of my first Bonsai tree and I am happy to report that my second tree is thriving. Kelsana 12/14/01

If you like Bonsai, or received one as a gift, this is the book to get. Filled with 101 (literally) facts and tips, it is concise, streamlined and offers excellent pictures.

All critical areas are covered in the book: potting, trimming, shaping, wiring, feeding, watering (the most important perhaps!). If you want to take a crack at an advanced level of Bonsai care, it even guides and discusses growing the roots onto rock, and hanging patterns. There's also a few great tips that clears up the confusion about what sort of tools you *really* need.

This is a MUST to add to your Bonsai book collection.
