For the first time in our history, scientists are uncovering astounding medical evidence about dieting -- and why so many of us struggle with our weight and the size of our waists. Now researchers are unraveling biological secrets about such things as why you crave chocolate or gorge at buffets or store so much fat.
Michael Roizen and Mehmet Oz, America's most trusted doctor team and authors of the bestselling YOU series, are now translating this cutting-edge information to help you shave inches off your waist. They're going to do it by giving you the best weapon against fat: knowledge. By understanding how your body's fat-storing and fat-burning systems work, you're going to learn how to crack the code on true and lifelong waist management. Roizen and Oz will invigorate you with equal parts information, motivation, and change-your-life action to show you how your brain, stomach, hormones, muscles, heart, genetics, and stress levels all interact biologically to determine if your body is the size of a baseball bat or of a baseball stadium. In , Roizen and Oz will redefine what a healthy figure is, then take you through an under-the skin tour of the organs that influence your body's size and its health. You'll even be convinced that the key number to fixate on is not your weight, but your waist size, which best indicates the medical risks of storing too much fat. Because the world has almost as many diet plans as it has e-mail spammers, you'd think that just about all of us would know everything there is to know about dieting, about fat, and about the reasons why our bellies have grown so large. YOU: On a Diet is much more than a diet plan or a series of instructions and guidelines or a faddish berries-only eating plan. It's a complete manual for waist management. It will show you how to achieve and maintain an ideal and healthy body size by providing a lexicon according to which any weight-loss system can be explained. YOU: On a Diet will serve as the operating system that facilitates future evolution in our dieting software. After you learn about the biology of your body and the biology and psychology of fat, you'll be given the YOU Diet and YOU Workout. Both are easy to learn, follow, and maintain. Following a two-week rebooting program will help you lose up to two inches from your waist right from the start. With Roizen and Oz's signature accessibility, wit, and humor, YOU: On a Diet -- The Owner's Manual for Waist Management will revolutionize the way you think about yourself and the food you consume, so that you'll diet smart, not hard. Welcome to your body on a diet. |

Oz, MD Whether you're carrying a few extra pounds of fat on your thighs or a suitcase's worth in your belly, it's hard not to think about fat. You feel it when you walk, you roll on it when you sleep, and you curse it when you try to slide into last year's jeans. But while most of us are intimately familiar with how fat looks on the outside, we're not quite as familiar with how it works on the inside. As we explain in YOU: On a Diet, we believe that to change your body, you need to know your body. In the simplest form, everyone knows the formula for gaining weight. Daily buckets of ranch dip plus photo-album-sized hunks of cheesecake plus a life of couch-dwelling equals a very unfortunate conclusion: too-frequent popped buttons. But many of us really don't know how fat works and how it works against us. Here's the inside story on the story of your insides. You: On A Diet doesn't just lay out a diet plan, but addresses what goes on when we eat and the various chemicals in our bodies that effect our behaviors and body shape.
Part 1 is a sort of introduction to your body. Part 2 is about appetite, your digestive system, inflammation, body fat, metabolism, and exercise. If you have ever wondered how food acts in your body and how food can effect how you feel and whether you store fat or burn it, this is the section for you. Part 3 focuses on how your mind effects your diet - emotions and psychology. Part 4 outlines the actual You diet and exercise plan and has a whole chapter about staying on plan by making "YOU-Turns" whenever you fall off the plan (and who sticks 100% to any diet 100% of the time?). The appendices cover medical intervention - drugs that cane help you lose weight, plastic surgery for saggy skin, and various bariatric procedures (stomach stapling, etc.). Throughout the book are little cartoons that illustrate the points made in the text. I found these helpful even though I am not a visual person. My main criticism is that they trot out the same old low-fat advice that hasn't helped America yet, and that they promote unhealthy vegetable oils. Neither do I believe that saturated fat is the enemy, though Mehmet and Oz do. This book is a good start, but I urge people to go beyond this and read more about vegetable oils and saturated fat and see if Mehmet and Oz are right in their views or not. Personally, the only oils I allow in my house are olive and coconut. Yes, coconut oil is a saturated fat. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-27 01:22:26 EST)

I am still working through the volume of information contained in this book. And, no, I am not skipping ahead to the chapter with their actual diet in it just yet! As someone who has struggled with my weight off and on (more on than off), I know I need to learn the why I am fat, not just the how to be thin, and I think I found the book which will truly educate me. The text is written in everyday language that you and I speak to each other, not medical high brow stuff. From the tone, I know I would also enjoy this book on tape! My only criticism, which may or may not be fair as I see the merit in it, is that some of the pages are overwhelming with "tips" in one corner, and a cartoon in the other, and the actual text from the page before somewhere in the middle. Sometimes this busy-ness gets in the way of the awesome information contained in all these sections -- if that makes any sense.
Anyway, I strongly recommend this book. I also strongly recommend catching the doctors on the Discovery Health channel when they are on. I love their down to earth approach to health. I would love to have them clean out my refrigerator and scare the fat off me with their outside the box tactics. They are just wonderful! More Manuals please! The premise of this book is intriguing - if we would only eat like our caveman ancestors, we wouldn't have the weight problems that are so common these days. However, the authors show a complete ignorance of what our ancestors actually ate, so as far as I'm concerned, the book starts out on the wrong foot.(It wasn't easy being a caveman, you know. They had really short life spans for a reason). Who has time to "forage" for every meal they eat? No red meat, no sugar, no processed flour, etc. Lots of walnuts, fish, and some chicken. Some of the ingredients they use with their menus would be difficult for me to find in my area. So why is this diet book any different from anyone else's?
It has some cutesy drawings, I'll give them that. But the constant attempts to be funny really got on my nerves. Then comes all the science - dozens of terms for different enzymes and parts of our digestive systems - hey, I'm not that up on science. After about 10 pages of it, I was totally confused. I just want to lose some weight, guys, not get a Bachelor's Degree in biology! It really boils down to doing the same thing all other diets will tell you to do - don't eat any processed foods, get lots of excersize, drink lots of water. The kicker to this book is that the authors state you will love losing weight so much on their plan, you will never go back to eating the way you did before. Yeah, right. This was a very easy read and is very logical. I have learned a lot from it and putting it into my families daily meal plan. It's hard to start choosing different things when you run a lot but I have learned a lot. I am going to start re-reading it to see if there is anything else I can pick up. Dr Oz is very smart and teaches you what your body does with food and energy. Very interesting.

This is more a review of the diet itself rather than the book as a work of literature.
I liked what they authors proposed for a few reasons: - walking 30 minutes a day was doable for me, since I already do that 2 to 3 times a week. - they make allowance for the fact that most people will slip up and eat naughty food sometimes- you are allowed to forgive yourself. - measuring fat loss through your belt notches is practical. - I've taken up eating natural food like apples and dried fruit, and nuts so at least I will have less trans fat encrusted arteries. - It sounds much more achieveable to do muscle work just 20 minutes once or twice a week. Before, it was people telling me to do at least 1 1/2 to 2 hours each time- man, I HATE THE GYM! I have trouble staying more than 50 minutes. Ok, I know the book is simply telling me what I want to hear, rather than what I need to hear, but it keeps me motivated to return to the gym at least and not skip gym weeks at a time. It's nice how they give some information about your own biology too. One thing I did note was a slight fib. They say there is no calorie counting. But there actually is. In the second half of the book, they write about your base metabolic calorie usage, and how certain activities will use up such and such, and eating certain foods will give you such and such calories. So sure, you DO need to know this (it means what you eat is more important than the actual exercise), but still- liar liar pants on fire boys! Over the last 4 weeks my scales have shown a weight loss of almost 1kg. Quite slow (I want 10 kg loss a day guys!) but I am fitter, and it is constant and I think I can maintain this rate of activity and diet. ANd this is the main thing that I like. So ask me in 12 months how I'm going :) (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-25 00:51:48 EST)

This is the most entertaining yet informative diet book you could ever read. It actually had me feeling as if one of the docs were in my livingroom explaining the workings of the body in a very down to earth way. Illustrations are thru-out the book and reinforce the information. The exercises and diet are easily followed. There is even a shopping list that tell you how to find the items in the store! Great and highly recommended. Wish me luck to get a healthy waistline!

How refreshing to have physicians write scientifically-based books that promote a healthy body, healthy living, and disease prevention. Maybe these authors will inspire their colleagues to talk more to patients about living healthfully. The book is written in a way that makes nutrition and physiological insights readable and understandable by people who do not have a strong science background. The emphasis is on trimming your waistline rather than focusing on weight. The authors explain the interaction of the brain, hormones, muscles, stomach, heart, and genes in dictating body size. They provide information on diet and exercise, and include a two week program. I hope our authors are closing the chasm between patients and doctors by raising issues that patients can further discuss with their doctors resulting in healthier patients. While this book can be tedious, with its 'dumbed-down' illustrations and YOU-reka interruptions, for someone who is new to studying nutrition and wants to learn how food is affecting their body, this is a very useful book. I especially appreciated the way the authors presented the effects of saturated fats on our arteries, and their introduction to the omentum - an organ that many of us never learned about in school. The tips about the effects of cinnamon on insulin resistance and eating nuts before a meal as a weight-loss aid will be very new information for some.
People who already have a good education in nutrition and biology will likely find this book too simplistic, but for many others, this book presents valuable information in a highly accessible format. I really recommend it for anyone who wants to understand why diets are making them fat. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-05 21:57:34 EST)

This book is full of all the information you will ever need on what happens to food when you ingest it. If only this information was taught in school, maybe obesity wouldn't be so out of control. I have always struggled with weight issues, comfort and love comes from food. Now I am more aware of the things that I need to put in my body, healthy nutrition, not junk. This book not only offers the idea of good food but tells you why it's so good for you. It offers recipes, that aren't complicated. I use to rely on artifical sweetners, not a good idea. I always wondered why I felt so hungry after using these sweetners. Well, what I learned is that our bodies don't know how to process them. Fresh fruit is the way to go. I reccommend this book very highly for anyone that needs to lose weight. Even reading it to help your children make good choices from a young age is a good idea. Even with the book weight loss is a struggle, but it helps to understand all about the food you put in your mouth. I am feeling more confident these days as I know now I am on the right track for shedding the pounds for good. Happy reading to all that decide to buy this book.....Don't lose hope!

I purchased this on the recommendation of my doctor. It is an easy read, the cartoons are cute. However, it really didn't tell me that much new. By eating more healthy foods and exercising more, we can all be in better shape.

I like Dr. Oz so I picked this book up at the library and dove in to it. It kept repeating the same thing over and over. We know you tried to diet and exercise before but you don't have good will power. It went on like this for many pages. I give up. I'm so glad I didn't buy this book.

This book is well written and entertaining yet informative. There are lots of diet books out there that just don't offer realistic long-term plans for weight loss. This book doesn't just illustrate a quick fix, it offers real advice for maintaining a healthy weight/size throughout your life.

I really enjoy the Real Age docs. I have been a member of RealAge.com for a long! time. I purchased this book to learn more about how food is processed, and it's effects on your body. That's exactly what I received. If you are looking for a "diet" book, this isn't really it. There are no magic formulas or drop 15 pounds in a week tricks. It's just simple, straight-forward explanations of why your body does what it does. Full of great info!

I bought this book from Costco and then the audio CD from Amazon.com so i could listen in the car too. It is no exageration to say that I can not imagine a better book on nutrition and dieting. The author breaks everything down. I learned so much. Be prepared for a seriously written book. It is so full of information that it can seem like a challenge to get past one page sometimes, but the things i learned blew my mind. For example, I am a sugar-aholic. The authors explained how sugar is addictive on a CELLULAR level. Plus, i was surprised to learn that sugar is not only bad for you in just one way, it unleashes a bunch of chain reactions in your body that spin you on a downward spiral that damages your body and makes you more addicted and fatter at the same time.
If you want to understand what happens after you put food in your mouth, or why you always want the twinky and not the spinach (or vice versa), you will greatly appreciate the fountain of knowledge that is this book. Best thing i ever got from Costco. They have Audio CD too (I have a super long commute), but it is hard to follow if your not totally concentrating on the authors. But the authors narrate themselves, so that was cool. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-28 01:12:52 EST)

I ordered the You on a Diet book and for some reason the us postal service delivered the book, but it never arrived to my suite. So I emailed customer service and they immediately sent out a new book free of charge with 2 day UPS delivery. Great service and the book arrived with no problems. I will definitely continue to use Amazon. Thanks.
The book is great for explaining how your body interacts with food and it breaks down the body system in an easy way to understand. Very good read. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-20 00:46:22 EST)

This is one of the worst diet books I've read (and I've read many of them). I doubt that these doctors have ever been on a diet so have no clue what it is like to be on one. Telling someone to eat the same food everyday for one or two meals is a recipe for a fatter person. Someone may be able to do it for a week or two but when that person breaks it, it's going to mean going on a feeding frenzy. They point out that dogs and cats eat the same food day in and and day out but people are not animals. People control the food that comes into their lifes. Animals have no choice but to eat what they are given.
The exercise section is another disaster. The doctors tell you "It's ONLY 30 minutes a day of walking" then in the next Chapter, add another 5 minutes of stretching OH and don't forget the one hour of regular exercise three times a week. Most people work and have families. If someone was able to do all the recommended exercise, that person wouldn't have time to eat with their kids, play with them and help with their homework. There would be no time to cook dinner or even kiss their love ones Good Night! And even on the walking only days, 35 minutes (30 minutes of walking plus 5 minues of stretching) will always become an hour. Add the time of changing into exercise clothes, a shower (if you need one afterwards), and whatever else you have to do to get ready. They make it sound so reasonable but unless you are single, it's NOT. DON'T WASTE your money on this book and the STUPID ideas of idiot DOCTORS! While the first two chapters were interesting only because they contained medical information and that is what a doctor knows and understands. This information is not enough to warrant spending your hard earned dollars. If there had been zeros stars, that is the rating I would have given this awful book. This book gives good information with far too many words. They could cut this book in half and I would recommend it. The authors mix facts in with silly analogies that are not humorous. I found it distracting from the actual topic. It made me wonder if they ever really worked with overweight women. The jokes they made were insensitive and assumed that people have little self control. If you like goofy one liners, you will love this book. I like the facts, some case studies and a few stories. The data was very good. I would suggest buying it used. Now when they create a road map of the book with the data and facts, it will be a good resource to those of us who help people lose weight. This volume is frustrating !!! I've seen the author, Michael F. Roizen, on PBS and he has said over & over that "the pictures are for the men".
I DON'T BELIEVE HIM. I DON'T BELIEVE THESE CHILDISH CARTOONS AND KINDERGARTEN PROSE WAS INTENDED FOR THE MALE AUDIENCE. [I think his explanation is an after thought, intentionally designed to hide the truth.] The author, at best, seems to be using a liberal helping of euphemisms ,,, although I have no idea who they are afraid of offending or not getting through to ,,, other then females !!! I believe, in retrospect, the author [publisher] reflected upon their intention of such infantile euphemisms, which were originally for women and switched, because of the offending response they received from some women who probably felt they were being fed "dumbed-down" information as exemplified by the infantile pictures and prose ,,, the author [publisher] in response to the female criticism ,,, manufactured a "new" intent ,,, now the infantile pictures and childish verbosity is for the "male" audience !!! There is no way I will ever believe these childish cartoons and baby-talk prose was intended for the male audience !!! NO WAY !!! -- Such nonsense completely turns me off and has relegated this volume to the garbage can !!! Also negative in this volume are the often used "highly technical terms" which ARE NOT FULLY SUPPORTED with meaningful and mature "definition" but instead [again] are defined with baby-talk and cartoons, cartoons in which I find absolutely NO help or meaning. They're more like children scribbling. On the positive side ,,, if you manage to sift through the verbose childishness, dumb-down prose and useless cartoons ,,, you can find some very worthy information, albeit very hard to locate in this toy box of nonsense. Sincerely, Matthew Phoenix, AZ (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-12 16:05:16 EST)

The Sex Factor: The last sentence on page 134 reads, "Now, estrogen works great when it gets paired up with, or balanced by, another ovarian messenger called progestin, which gets released from the egg sac (called corpus luteum) after the follicle ships out its egg."
Give me a break! My female body has never produced a drop of progestin in my entire life! Don't Doctors Roizen and Oz know the difference between progestin and progesterone? Does anybody who helped edit this book know the difference? I'm disappointed to have found this mistake, and I'm wondering how many other mistakes there are, and how seriously I should take this book? From a woman who knows the difference between progestin and progesterone. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-24 01:11:47 EST)

Food, water, sex, sleep - this is what we need to live happy, long and healthy life - at least according to the authors of this book. Provided, of course that we do not overindulge in any of this. Too much food is as bad as too much sex or too much sleep. Or even worse. Obesity is a big problem in America. In fact it should be treated as an illness. In extreme cases a surgery is necessary. In milder cases a change of lifestyle brings about very good results. According to the authors we should avoid all and any products containing hydrogenated oils, sugar, and bleached flower. At the same time we should make sure to intake Omega-3 fatty acids. In effect this means no packaged, pre-finished meals on our table. They should be replaced with fresh foods that we prepare in our own kitchen. The books clearly names all ingredients that we need to avoid and the nutrients that we need to have. In addition we need to exercise and sweat (walk, cardio and strength workout, stretching, etc). It sounds all so simple, yet it is needed to be said once again, and these two doctors have a great way of doing that. I am well aware of the obesity problem as I have a friend who used to weigh almost 300 pounds. His motivation to lose weight resulted from a simple question asked by his doctor: "What are you planning to do with your short life?" His doctor made it very clear to him that with his obesity problem there were not many days left in his life. Was that a good motivation? He decided to shed 100 pound. After 9 months he lost 68 pounds so far, and I see that he will definitely achieve his goal by the year end. He changed his life around. New lifestyle? Definitely, although he calls is "New Life Standards". He goes to the gym each day, swims 3 times a week, I am not sure what he eats, but he strictly follows advice he found in another book titled "Can We Live 150". He is 67 now and just started diving lessons that he takes in addition to his swimming at the pool. He plans to live at least another 67 years, and I wonder what else is possible... You On A Diet is a great book. You'll learn a ton about your body and how food works within your body.
It seems like there isn't much new here, other than this is a healthy carb, lower calorie eating plan. This diet is about general guidelines, not hard and fast rules. I would highly recommend this book in conjuction with the Beck Solution which is a congnative therapy approach to dieting, some of which is lightly covered in You On A Diet. There is some good diet tips in this book and a lot of information you don't need to know, like how your body digests food. I wish there were more tips and motivation then the science behind it.

On one hand, I have learned more about how my body works with regard to food by reading this book than I ever have with any other source. The content of this book is fantastic, and if you know nothing about how hunger works, this is a great introduction. That said, it is a book specifically designed to be popular, and as such, is jammed-packed with an equal amount of infuriatingly annoying garbage. I respect the aim of this book, and I understand completely that if all one is given is a dry medical pamphlet reiterating the same food facts, then no one will ever take their weight seriously. This does not, however, excuse the overuse of "Housewife Humor." These are jokes that seem to specifically appeal to the scores of chubbies who spend their afternoons eating Thin Mint sugar burritos while watching Oprah. It is no surprise, then, that this book was featured on Oprah as part of it's promotion.
The diet, which is what everyone will be buying it for, emphasizes eating the same foods over and over again. The reason is that if you make what you eat automatic, you won't deviate and eat random junk that'll mess up your insides. Plus, even if you eat healthy, varying your foods drastically all the time hinders your weight-loss goals, because of the extra effort that it takes inside of you to sort it all out. A major point in this plan that I can vouch for is eating nuts as a snack throughout the day to manage your hunger. I've been using peanuts, and because it takes longer for your body to break them down and digest them, they prevent you from being hungry all day. So eat nuts as snacks. The foods they suggest you purchase are nice, but I suspect that if you live in a small town, they're completely unreasonable. Some of the recipes look alright, though. I'll let YOU be the guinea pig and tell me how they taste. The book ends with a look at pills and medical procedures that can be used to lose weight. Biggest news to me: You can't lose cellulite, and liposuction only works to shape areas. Something which struck me as funny was that certain antidepressants cause weight gain, so if you're depressed about being fat and take these, you'll gain more weight, get more depressed about being fat, take some more, etc. Also mentioned are the three major surgeries for messing with your innards in order to kill your appetite. I'd go into more detail, but I don't feel like it. Overall, I think that for what it is, it's a good book. It's annoying, and you won't be reading it for pleasure, but the advice inside is worth the time. There is one major problem with the book that needs to be addressed, and it's this: The book spends way too much time going into loving detail about foods that you can't eat. It mentions donuts, cookie dough, chips, french fries, etc., all the while trying to get you to forget about them. Instead of talking about how delicious carrots and other veggies and fruits taste, they constantly mention in a joking fashion junk food. Every time I read this book I wanted to eat candy, and it irritated me. To show you how bad it got, when I was reading this book at work I decided to eat a huge slice of ice cream pie in the freezer, and I wasn't even hungry. It's pretty astounding that, with as much time as they put into studying how the mind works with regard to hunger, they would disregard that crucial piece of information. This book is a quick read, but I suspect that if you read it at all, it won't be cover-to-cover. I strongly advise you to read parts two and three, which deal with the science of hunger. These parts are filled with good information, even if the pop culture references are as annoying as Simon Cowell and Paris Hilton running a Swiffer over your face while you're trying to prevent Eva Longoria from stealing your DVD collection of Friends, Season 2. So read it, but ideally get it for free at your local library. I say this because I think you should read it, but I don't think it's worth your money. I have read so many books on weight loss that they soon run together. I found this one to be different. I liked the explanation behind what you should eat. It was interesting knowing what was going on physiologically inside the body when certain foods are consumed. Great book.

This book is not completely read and may not ever be completely read.
The author drags out the first several chapters with physiology that is boring and way over most of societies abilities. As a nurse I felt all the details were not needed. The best part of the book is toward the end and has pictures!! Another friend recommended this book to me and has had great sucess losing inches--He is very proud of himself! His wife is very thin and she eats what he eats. She has gained a few pounds. A good book all in all. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-28 01:16:15 EST)

Finally, a book that clearly explains what to do and why! I have read so many books that make no sense to the common person. I highly recommend this book. Also, I have almost eliminated all my Fibromyalgia pain by following the recommendations in the book!

First-I give the program a 5-star rating, but the book only a 3-star. I'd suggest buying the PBS dvd on the program over the book at first.
I bought this book after watching the PBS special and then seeing the Doctors on a Discovery Health special in NYC. This book is good, although I tire of every other line being a joke or analogy. SO I find it difficult to read straight through. Now I'm skipping around reading a bit here, a bit there. However, once you get used to the writing style, you can ignore some of the 'zingers' and get the jist of what's being said. You'll even find yourself laughing at some of them. Anyway, I've tried many diets, many schemes to lose weight and I always lose focus, gain more weight, or give up. This book and philosophy has helped me change my knowledge on how our bodies work, why we want the foods we want, and what is most important (our health). I've been following this plan for over 4 weeks (although I have modified the suggested food plan to my own-which has worked for me so far). I have lost over 5 pounds and 10 (TEN) inches. I did lose the promised 2" from my waist in the two weeks and I've never felt better! I think this is a tool you should at least read to gain insight into making your lifestyle changes. I know it has helped me tremendously to be more realistic in my quest. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-28 01:16:15 EST)

This book has been hugely successful for a reason. IT WORKS. I'm getting over sounding like a weight-loss commercial finally after losing eighty pounds of fat in large part due to the very easy to apply principles of this book and a bit of work. While it's not the only fitness book you should own, it does help make the complex systems of the body simple to understand. I loan my copy out frequently now, because once learned, the principles don't require constant review.
I must say that the author's writing style is at many times very annoying. The constant pop-culture references and jokes cease being funny after the fiftieth time, and that's just in the first chapter. I waded through it though, in bits and pieces, and followed the directions, and lost fat. Excellent program that is fairly easy to apply if you're motivated to actually apply it and break a few bad habits. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-25 01:13:19 EST)

Wow, I couldn't come up with so many paragraphs as others have. It's just so simple and smart, and most of which the average person already knows.
It's a no-brainer read, that really just reinforces the facts. Eat clean, lean food with lots of fruits and veggies and increase your activity. I'm a nurse at one of the Country's biggest teaching hospitals. One of my Physicians heads a weight-management clinic besides his Internal med practice. The "You" program is pretty much what his patients are advised to follow. Yeah, it's boring information because there's no magic answer to weightloss. Maybe why the Doc's have to throw in so darn many analogies! Bottem line: good book, written by experts in Physical Science. (scientists). If you follow it, you of course will lose weight. Period. I thought I knew just about everything there was to know about dieting. This book takes the subject on a whole new level. It is extremely easy to read, understand, and opens your eyes up to a completely different look at how the body, and what you put into it, works. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to take control of their life, their body, and their health. Wonderfully well-written!

"You on a Diet" is the most informative diet book I have ever read. It really explains how the body's systems work, and it even has a way of changing your attitude toward the dieting endeavor. It says that it's okay to go off your diet occasionally as long as you regard it as a temporary deviation in your effort and not as a failure. And, of course, you need to get back on the track. It tells what you can snack on and identifies what is really not good for you or anyone else. The authors sometimes seem to be trying to hard to be clever in the way they express ideas, but the information is so interesting that you can put up with it.

I found this book interesting and I did gain a few tips I can use. However, as a sugar addict, it is not so easy to just not eat sugar. And I rarely eat because I a hungry. Instead I eat just because I feel like it, or I'm bored, or stressed, etc. This book doesn't address any of those issues or how to avoid emotional eating. The book seems to be targeted to obese people as they say you can lose a few inches in your waist in the first week. And the recipes assume you have lots of leisurely time to cook.

My husband and I have tried so many different diets and ways to lose weight. I saw this show on TV and was inspired, so I bought the book. I had previously owned the You, an Owner's Manual book and really liked the humorous writing style.
I am so impressed with this book, You on a Diet. It was the exact inspiration that I needed to make a true change in my life! I really needed the "biology lesson" on exactly how food is broken down, what really is bad and good for you, a lesson on reading the ingredient labels, and a refresher on a good exercise plan that requires NO EQUIPMENT! Even better, everything is explained to you without too many big medical terms (those used in the book are well-defined) or confusing jargon. This book is very inspiring, helpful, funny without over doing it, and provides you with so much information without overwhelming you. I'm so happy that I read this book and I'm definitely on my way to becoming a better, healthier person! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-13 05:50:44 EST)
