| Women & Money: Owning the Power to Control Your Destiny | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Why is it that women, who are so competent in all other areas of their lives, cannot find the same competence when it comes to matters of money? |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Money maven Suze Orman's latest book, Women & Money addresses the complicated (and often dysfunctional) relationship women have with personal finance. Orman's direct, non-condescending style is perfect for this subject matter--she begins with the premise that "Women can invest, save, and handle debt as well and skillfully as any man" and then tackles the important question--"So why don't they?" Designed to educate and inspire, Women & Money also offers a "Save Yourself Plan," a five-month program that "delivers genuine long-term financial security." Want to know more? Watch a video message from Suze below, and take a gander at the first chapter of Women & Money--you'll be "controlling your destiny" in no time. --Daphne Durham
An Exclusive Video Message from Suze Orman
Read the First Chapter of Women & Money For Women OnlyI never thought I'd write a book about money just for women. I never thought it was necessary. So then why am I doing just that in my eighth book? And why now? Let me explain. All my previous books were written with the belief that gender is not a factor on any level in mastering the nuts and bolts of smart financial management. Women can invest, save, and handle debt just as well and skillfully as any man. I still believe that--why would anyone think differently? So imagine my surprise when I learned that some of the people closest to me in my life were in the dark about their own finances. Clueless. Or, in some cases, willfully resisting doing what they knew needed to be done. I'm talking about smart, competent, accomplished women who present a face to the world that is pure confidence and capability. Do you mean to tell me that I, Suze Orman, who make my living solving the financial problems of total strangers, couldn't spot the trouble brewing so close to home? I don't think I'm blind; I just think that these women became very, very good at hiding their troubles from me.Why not? They had years of practice hiding them from themselves. Read more from Chapter 1...

Suze is definitely right on! this is a book that every woman should read and apply to cover the basics in life. We cannot expect to know it all, but thanks to this book we can at least get started on the right path to be financially independant, minimize the risks of the unknown and have a wonderful peace of mind knowing that what we value most is taken care of no matter what.
I love this book and definitely recommend it to all women! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-06 01:57:14 EST)

Women & Money: Owning the Power to Control Your Destiny
This book is great and very informative. I got divorce after 18 years, had to sell our home, gave him our business, and had to start over. He said I couldn't make it without him. This books encourages you and helps you get started on a new life. I now own my own home, flipping houses, have an apartment house and still have my full time job with benefits. My ex was a spender so even with less income I now have a savings account and started on my way to a great new life and making my own decisions! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-06 01:57:14 EST)

I love this book! I've always liked Suze (although I was never crazy about her presentation style) but I also thought that you had to have some money to work with before you would benefit from anything she was saying. This book is great because it gives you things to start doing today, no matter what your financial situation is, that will allow you to be in a better situation 6 months from now. She also stresses the importance for women to have their own money! You just never know what the future will hold, and there is no way that any woman should be totally dependent on her partner!

Believe it or not, this book is a book about women and relationships. That is, the relationships women have with their money. In her characteristically direct, clear, and here's-what-you-need-to-know style, Suze exposes (in a no-shame/no-blame way) the dysfunctional relationship women have had with money, and then provides a step-by-step five-month plan to help set the stage for a lifetime of financial security.
Whether or not you follow all the steps now, this book provides an amazing guide to the essentials of financial planning--from setting up a checking and savings account to investing in stocks and bonds to creating wills and trusts. The overriding theme of the book is quite an empowering and inspiring one: it's time that women realize the value of what they are truly worth...and protect themselves accordingly. A smart girlfriend sent me this book as a gift. Took me months to finally read it - but I sure am glad I did. While I was fairly familiar with a lot of Suze's advice and well on the way to her plan's steps - she offers some key advice to consider: 1) living trusts can help ease the transition if you pass away, significantly reducing paperwork and fees for your heirs; 2) Roth IRA rules will change in 2010 - so it is a good idea to fund a standard IRA now (even though for me its not tax deductible due to my tax bracket) - because standard IRAs become convertible to the Roth IRA in 2010, only paying tax on the money earned since investing! Roths are the best way to grow retirement money tax free. I loved her advice too about funding the company match 401K, then the Roth (if you qualify) and then the rest of your 401K opportunity. I've told plenty of friends to go out and buy the book - and a few have come back to thank me! I'll probably be giving it out as Christmas gifts this year even though her special offer has passed (maybe she'll get them to renew it!) When I have friends with small nest eggs talking about buying expensive cars...time to give them the wake up call!

Suze explains everything perfectly and if she doesn't go too far into detail, she tells you where you can go to read more. I needed someone to explain the basics of finances and to let me know how important it all is.

After clicking through Suze Orman's TV program called Women & Money, I decided to give this book a try. Generally, these types of books do not seem to help me, but immediately as began reading this book the lightbulb went off in my head. I have to say that I am really happy that I bought this book. It is giving me some tools that I will need in the future as my business grows. (I even bought the book for a friend of mine.)

For women who have little or no working knowledge about how finances and investments should be ran, this book is an excellent place to start. It definietely takes the blinders off--especially since women can no longer go under their spouse's credit rating should things happen that aren't forseen. In my case it was a divorce, but this book gave me a wealth of info that I fully intend to apply.
For those of you going through a separation of some sort, this is a good book to start with. She doesn't come out and mention death and/or divorce, but paints out scenarios that often leave women holding the bag and fending for themselves. There are a lot of preventative measures that can be taken also. The bottom line is that we no longer live in an age where women can rely on the spouse or significant other to provide--something has to be set aside just in case the unforseen occurs. This book is a good investment. I strongly urge women to read it. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-04 14:06:27 EST)

Suze Orman hammers home that women need a will, an irrevocable trust and a durable power of attorney. This is information that she discusses in each one of her books. In some of her books, she goes more in-depth but this book, I found the information more basic, just that in this book, she targets women. She talks about how to come up with a 12-month plan to get your finances in order but I found her overly confident in her belief that her methods are going to work in EVERY situation. Unlike her other fantastic books, The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous and Broke and the 9 Steps to Financial Freedom, I found most of the information in this book to be common sense financial advice. I understand, though that she needs to rehash this information because not everyone will read all of her books, however, she could have easily limited this information to a single chapter in one of her better books.

I am a young-ish, successful sales-woman, looking to further my knowledge about general finances and investing. This book is great, as it is easy to read and very informative. Suzie does a great job of speaking to all different types of women: stay at home moms, those heavily in debt, and those who are looking to grow their money in the future. Most importantly, she ties these need-to-know finance topics with the emotional "issues" woman generally deal with when it comes to finances. I would highly recommend this book, but it is a book for finance "beginners" or those who need help.

This book is just what I needed to get started. My uncle had signed me up for Kiplinger's magazine, but I just had no idea how to make sense of the magazine or doing anything based upon it. There were lots of odd terms in it and I didn't understand what anything meant. Suze's book is just the opposite. It taught me everything I needed to know about how to actually START, which is so important. I have found that the practical STARTing information is not so readily available on other money books. The text is also simple to read. Wonderful. And to the poster who suggested that this book is for the above average person, I heartily disagree. I do not have much money at all but have found the book useful. Indeed, Suze actually emphasizes building your emergency fund at the same time as you are building your retirement fund, so that you will not devote all your money to retirement and then end up with a toothbill you cannot pay. The book is great!

I bought this book because I saw her on PBS. The book is just her speech she gives every time. I wanted the book because there was supposed to be a code in it that you could put in the computer and get a savings account that would pay you $100 after 12 consecutive months of savings. There was no code in the entire book. Her website said it was on page 85. It was not there. I read the entire book and never found it. Very disappointing considering I thought the book would pay for itself.

She dishes out good common sense practical advice that many people need to heed. I would highly recommend her books to anyone who does not already have a financial background as her books are well written, clear and concise.

I purchased the audio book, which I was able to get through in about a week during my lengthy commute to work each day. After listening to it though, I ended up buying the hardback book as well. I needed something in writing that I could refer back to. So, I would recommend just purchasing the hardback so you don't end up spending double, like I did.

I absolutely loved this book. I highly recommend it to all my friends. Suze Orman writes this one on a more personal level. I felt that everything she was saying was directed right at me. Many of the questions I had about investing and planning for retirement she answered in a way I could understand. So many times financial planning books seem so far fetched that the plan just doesn't seem something I could do. Suze's book did not leave me with that feeling. I feel I can put her 5 month plan to work. If you are looking for simple instructions on how to get out of debt, plan for retirement, etc. this is definetly the book for you!

And what I needed to know is not just about what to do with my money, but that I even needed to start asking questions about it, and how to go about doing that. I am the woman that Suze wrote this book for. My dad was great with money, and my brother and sister are, too. I did not naturally inherit this trait, so I have always been a mess when it comes to finances. I always felt "dumb" for not knowing these things, but what I finally realize is that I should stop blaming myself for not knowing what was never taught and start taking control by educating MYSELF. I am still reading the book, but already feel some of the power that Suze is talking about just by knowing the details of my checking account and what APY means for example... I am someone who was letting my husband take care of everything and letting myself stay in the dark, but Suze has changed all that. Our relationship with money has already changed, as he sees me becoming more in control. He will call and consult me before making a large purchase, b/c he knows I am watching over our finances. I also love the 8 qualities of a wealthy woman section; I have started making a conscious effort to adopt these and it really does make a difference. It doesn't happen overnight and takes dedication (I am only just beginning), but I do believe it is possible. Highly recommend this book to any woman.

An excellent eye opener in particular for older women whose husbands have had total control of money, pay bills etc, and then whoops you have total
responsiblity (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-04-05 17:11:04 EST)

I loved this book and found the tools she put on her website specifically for this book to be extremely helpful.
I read this book after reading the 9 Steps book, and it is mostly repeat information, so if you are looking at these two books, just buy one or the other. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-04-05 17:11:04 EST)
