I'm new to the diet. So everything in the book was helpful. I like getting my own copy but if you can get one at the second hand book store go for it.

I ORDERED THIS BOOK AND THE EXERCISE DVD THAT GOES WITH IT BECAUSE I HAD THE OLDER BOOK AND WANTED AN UPDATED VERSION AND THE ADDED EXERCISE DVD. I HONESTLY ONLY SKIMMED THROUGH IT BUT IT SEEMS JUST AS GOOD AS THE OLDER BOOK WITH SOME MORE RECIPES AND THE EXERCISE DVD SEEMS VERY EASY TO FOLLOW.

THIS WORKED! My husband did it and lost a lot of weight (about 25 pounds, I think). The thing that impressed me is that he was able to EAT while he was on the diet. My husband LOVES FOOD. Seriously. He loves to think about food, he loves to make food, he loves to look at food and he loves to EAT. If he can do this diet and STILL ENJOY FOOD (which he did), then anyone can.

Fist time (5years ago) i tried the south beach diet i lost 18 ponds and i really look forward to lose a few more with the new ideas and tips that comes with this book.

This diet makes sense and it works. It does however require a time investment to prepare the meals and snacks. We are enjoying the new menu items in this book.

This is a great book. The food and reciepes are out of this world. The main thing is that you can diet and the rest of the family can eat the same food and not know they are eating "Diet" food and you don't have to make several different meals.

I was surprised at how flavorful the recipes were for Phase I. While I do miss starchy foods from time to time, the diet allows you to eat and snack quite a bit and encourages you to do so until you're full - and the food I'm eating now is healthier, so I don't feel guilty about it.

I recently turned 45 and after a cruise vacation with my husband I came home 142 pounds. I had done the SBD years ago, lost weight and foolishly abandoned the principles. I immediately went and dusted off my old copy.
I started 9 weeks ago and also started walking 30 minutes a day on a treadmill. I'm now 125 pounds. All my clothes are at the tailor's being taken in. I look better, I feel better and my husband is thrilled. It's so much easier than trying to eat "low fat" - there are so many options. We don't miss potatoes, and when we do we have sweet potatoes instead. I've become expert at delicious salads with lots of healthy veggies and lean protein. I'm really excited to try some of the new recipes in the Supercharged book. What I'm really looking forward to is trying the interval training - just walking was getting boring - and I was worried I'd have to start walking longer and longer to keep up the benefit. Hopefully the intervals will allow me to keep my exercise routine around 30 minutes a day. If you want to lose weight and keep it off get this book! In the latest version of "The South Beach Diet" the authors claim that their program is now "supercharged" with an exercise routine involving only 20 minutes per day of interval training but promises "Faster Weight Loss and Better Health for Life." Unfortunately the latest studies do not seem to support the validity of this claim. According to a recently published study in the "Archives of Internal Medicine," 20 minutes of exercise, even combined with a strict diet, is decidely insufficient to maintain weight loss in overweight women.
"Effect of Exercise on 24-Month Weight Loss Maintenance in Overweight Women - John M. Jakicic, PhD; Bess H. Marcus, PhD; Wei Lang, PhD; Carol Janney, MS, Arch Intern Med. 2008;168(14):1550-1559. The addition of 275 mins/wk of physical activity, in combination with a reduction in energy intake, is important in allowing overweight women to sustain a weight loss of more than 10%." A mere 20 minutes of interval training would fall far short of this requirement. Further commentary on the study is provided by: Warren G. Thompson, MD; James A. Levine, MD, PhD, Arch Intern Med. 2008;168(14):1559-1560. "Although dieting has a modest short-term effect in the treatment of obesity, the long-term benefit has yet to be demonstrated. This is not surprising because caloric intake has not increased during the last 100 years. Rather, there has been a sharp drop in caloric expenditure secondary to changes at the workplace and in the home. Surveys of people who have sustained significant weight loss for more than 5 years demonstrate that a significant increase in energy expenditure is necessary.... They conclude that 2000 kcal/wk of exercise is needed to sustain weight loss." As paraphrased in a review of the study by the BBC "Women who want to lose weight - and keep it off - need to be exercising for almost an hour, five days a week, according to US experts... The University of Pittsburgh study found the 55-minute regime was the minimum needed to maintain a 10% drop in weight." "Thirty minutes a day is good for general health, but if you want to lose weight, you need to be doing more, and if you want to sustain weight loss, you need to be doing even more than that..." - Professor Paul Gately, Leeds Metropolitan University" In summary, women need a minimum of 55 minutes per day of exercise 5 days per week or at least 40 minutes every day in order to achieve and maintain weight loss. The only two programs that I am aware of which are built around a foundation of regular exercise meeting these requirements are: The Biggest Loser and the Dump Your Trainer program. Of the two, my personal preference is the later for its simplicity, emphasis on both self-empowerment and the need to avoid injuries but if you want to lose weight and keep it off "The South Beach Diet, Supercharged," according to the latest research, is just not sufficient to get you where you want to go. Wow! Wow! Wow! I have a lot of weight to lose and I did not and would not do the "count the clorie and journaling" diets. South Beach diet does not have you do that! It was easy to lose weight....I am dead serious. I just stuck to their approved foods list and literaly ate as much as I wanted from it...and stayed away from their foods to avoid list. I also religously followed the EASY exercise program they have in the book. I have just finished phase one. It lasts 2 weeks and I lost 11 pounds. I recommend this to anyone who is trying to lose weight and who is excited about seeing quick results. Also for those who do not like to count calories and keep a food journal. I am SO GLAD I found this book!

We thought the old diet plan was good; this one is better, with the emphasis on lifestyle change, and the food plan is easier to follow too. I FEEL better, even though I am not trying to lose weight, and my husband is finding it easier to stick with.

Dr. Agatston's new book "The South Beach Diet Super Charged" is an excellent way to lose weight and get in shape. Like his first book, "The South Beach Diet" this book explains how to eat for a healthy lifestyle, choosing high fiber, nutritious carbohydrates, good unsaturated fats, lean protein and low fat dairy.
This book takes the South Beach Diet to the next level by explaining a very simple yet body transforming exercise plan. Agatston explains how just 20 minutes of exercise a day done correctly can give the beneficial results of revving up your metabolism, overcoming weight loss plateaus and burning fat and calories. The book includes a healthy eating plan and a daily exercise regime that is very doable! I am sure Dr. Agatston is a busy man and had help writing this book. I have to applaud the ghostwriter(s) for their very clear, concise way of explaining things. Many diet and exercise books are confusing; what to eat, when and where. This book lays everything out. There is a fitness plan that tells you exactly what to do in Phase 1, 2 and 3. Clear photographs support the plan. The eating program is laid out so it is simple to understand with easy to follow lists of exactly what you can and cannot eat during each Phase. Two full weeks of meal plans are included in the book along with recipes such as "Chicken and Lentil Stew", "Peanut Butter and Jelly Cookies" and "Stir Fried Chicken with Soba Noodles". No pics for the recipes but nutritional information is included. The 337 page hardcover book also includes tips and tricks on success for the plan. And a section on how to maintain your weight loss and an index for easy search. Overall an excellent, healthy plan. Two years ago I jumped on the South Beach Band Wagon and pretty painlessly lost 35 pounds. I felt better and looked younger than I had in years. Then, slowly and insiduously, I fell off the wagon. I avoided the scale and tried to ignore the fact that my new wardrobe was becoming a bit, well, snug. Finally I broke down and stood on the scale. It was a "Come to Jesus" moment. I was shocked to realize that I'd regained 15 pounds.
As luck would have it, the new and updated South Beach Diet Supercharged book had just been released, so I purchased a copy to refresh my memory on the philosophy and mechanics of the diet. Good carbs, good fats. It's simple, really. Dr. Agatston explains his recommendations and provides solid data to back up his theories. I was pleased to see that the updated version also included some fascinating information on what type of exercise is most beneficial, and why. Sprinkled throughout the volume are personal success stories for some extra encouragement. I must say that the book left me feeling motivated and ready to get back on track with an eating and exercise plan that truly make sense to me. This book is highly recommended if you're serious about making positive changes--and not just for the sake of your appearance. I decided to give the South Beach Diet a try. I just completed Phase I and have lost 11 pounds in 14 days! As a woman with PCOS, I have never lost weight this easily. After the first few days, it gets easier and I don't even miss the sugar or starchy carbs. I love the meal plan ideas, and all of the recipes in this book that I have tried are really good. I am also a vegetarian and I like the fact that this diet is easily adapted for vegetarians. I feel great and am not hungry on this plan. I only wish I had read this book a long time ago.

If you have the original or if you have some idea of what the book says, don't waste your time. Nothing new. I think the good doctor just wanted to see if he could make an extra couple bucks. Good diet to follow however!

I had the older book but so glad I purchased the newer version with the exercise in it. Also the Good Food list has expanded a lot!! I use it all the time to see what I can and cannot enjoy. Not to strict and I am never hungry.

Updated info on the South Beach Diet. Easier to follow than ever. One caution, however. If you have a bad back, be very careful in doing some of the Pilates exercises. Go slowly and modify if necessary. Otherwise, excellent.

Instead of repeating other reviewers, let's focus mostly on seldom-discussed details of this book.
The South Beach diet centers on natural foods. Agatson contends that portion size usually takes care of itself when natural foods are eaten. He opposes the taking of supplements with the exception of fish oils (p. 314), because he doesn't believe that supplements can adequately replace the nutritive content of natural foods. Fish oil is effective at reducing the inflammatory response that is part of the metabolic syndrome. (p. 81) Agatson traces the obesity epidemic in the western world. He points to the overconsumption of refined carbohydrates and other foods with a high glycemic impact, and the increase in sedentary living. In fact, he shows that NEAT (nonexercise activity thermogenesis) has declined not only since the Industrial Revolution, but even at much more recent times, owing to such inventions as the e-mail. (p. 57) Even subtle declines in everyday activity levels add up, over time, to increased fat accumulation. He points to the irony of the fact that American children are overfed but undernourished. This causes a host of problems beyond the most obvious ones. For example, the attention span of children in schools has declined in recent years. (p. 87) As an experienced educator, I fully agree. Belly fat is the most dangerous, as it contributes to the inflammatory process that leads to cardiovascular disease, strokes, etc. Agatson shows how crude weight measurements and the BMI have been superseded by measurements of the waist-to-hip ratio. It should not exceed 0.8 in women and 0.95 in men. (p. 64) Agatson prescribes many different kinds of exercise. He also stresses interval training, pointing out the fact that this facilitates fat-burning. Also, more intense exercise gives a longer afterburn, which is the time that fat burning is still occurring at above-resting rates after the exercise session has been finished. There are numerous menu ideas presented in this book. There is also a helpful table of food substitutions (p. 242) for use in the Phase 1 of the South Beach diet. For instance, mashed potatoes can be replaced by mashed cauliflower or pureed navy beans, and potato chips can be replaced by baked zucchini chips. This book is less about diet than about exercise. The premise is that you should exercise which is hardly a revelation to anyone. The original book had everything you need for the diet except that the new book will produce additional profits for the author. Go check out the old book in the library for free.

Reinforces what was written in the first book, with some additional interesting information. The list of foods to enjoy got bigger, which is better to choose a wider variety of acceptable foods. And of course, the supercharged part of it, exercising, makes it a must-have book for an all around excellent diet and lifestyle change. Would also recommend The South Beach Diet Quick and Easy Cookbook, which has many more delicious recipes.

South Beach Super Charged has made getting back on track much easier. I must admit, even though I have always been a fan of the South Beach Diet I started to get bored with it. This book changes all of that! So many more options and great recipes. In 9 days I have lost 8 pounds and the most important thing....I AM NEVER HUNGRY and the food is delicious.

I've been on South Beach Diet for one year and two months now, having already easily dropped 25 pounds w/o feeling like I'm missing anything. This new book with the added recipes and exercise help is perfect to take me to the next level, and I feel the advantage already! Loving it!

I've read the other South Beach books and this one has it all. I've been working out with a trainer and staying healthy...but this has all kinds of additional benefits for the time I'm spending...and, the diet makes sense and is easy to follow

I was aware of South Beach Diet throughout all these years but I never made an effort to read any of the books by Dr. Agatston as I thought that there was too much hype about them and I considered this whole `South Beach movement' as a passing fad, especially after reading somewhere that South Beach Diet is nothing more than repackaged Atkin's Diet. But the main reason that I actually avoid diet books is the fact that I do not believe in diets. What I believe in is healthy lifestyle and I have already purchased my Perfect Healthy Lifestyle Book a few years ago. For all that reasons I was surprised (actually `unpleasantly surprised' to tell the truth) when I recently got The South Beach Diet Supercharged as a birthday gift. Just to prove myself that I was right about my opinion about this book I took it for my bed reading the next evening. And that is when I was proven wrong. It turned out that this isn't actually a diet book per se. Like the other book this one is actually also a book about healthy lifestyle. Since the book is addressed to people having some problems with controlling their weight, a big part of it is devoted to nutrition. However the main focus here is on proper nutrition rather then just losing weight at any rate. The part on exercising gave me some good ideas for making a better use of my daily walks and weekends' hikes. A number of recipes for easy meals, healthy salad dressings, etc. should satisfy most demanding `Health Freaks' like myself... Although The South Beach Diet Supercharged does not beat the content of my most favorable Body Maintenance Handbook, it is definitely a good addition to it.

I started the SBD in September 2007. I've lost 55 lbs and kept it off. I pre ordered this book and couldn't wait to read it. Phase 1 is so much easier than Phase 1 in the original book. The new recipes are fabulous. I also started the 3 phase exercise program contained in this book about 3 weeks ago. Phase 1 of the exercise plan is pretty boring if you already work out. So far I am being challenged by Phase 2 and appreciate the shorter work outs! I swear by the SBD and have been lucky to have a husband that didn't need to lose weight but wanted our family to eat healthier. I was a sugar and bad carb addict but also liked to enjoy a glass or two of wine and didn't want to give the wine up. This is the perfect lifestyle to adopt and this book makes it so easy if you are willing to take the time to plan your meals ahead of time. As one last comment - on phase 1 of the diet I did not cheat AT ALL and did not weigh myself until the 2 weeks were over. I had lost 13.2 lbs and completely lost my sugar and bad carb cravings. Anyone that I know that has success with this diet truly READ the book and didn't cheat AT ALL in phase 1.

I have been following a south beach regimen on and off for 4 years. Dr. Agaston's newest book was helpful in that it was comprehensive,yet easy to read. It honed in on many of my concerns from belly fat to revving up my metabolism... The discussions on how and why interval training works has motivated me to shake up my exercise routine.
The recipes that I tried so far, were easy and tasted good! It has helped me get back on track towards the lifestyle change I want to keep me healthy. This one's a keeper! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-31 01:11:21 EST)

Another welcome edition: lots of new recipes and ideas to help achieve a healthy weight. A little more than I needed on exercise, etc, but am finding the book very helpful.

I was very disappointed with this new version of the SBD. Except for the addition of exercise,the original SBD plan is still the best.

I went on the South Beach Diet in November 2005. In one year I went from weighing 280 lbs to weighing 215! My cholesterol went from 221 to 141,and my blood pressure went from 150/100 to 117/77 (with NO drugs). Also I lost 6 inches around my waist. It went from 42 inches to 36.As of May 2008, I currently weigh 212 (at 5' 11') and am trying to work my way to 195 now. I think that this book will probably help me do that.I own all of the books and am one of the biggest advocates of the diet. I would recommend this book to anyone!

The new recipes and meal plans as well as the brand new exercise program are all fantastic. The additional scientific information is very helpful in understanding the whys and hows of weight loss. It's a good, informative and easy to read book. And totally different from the first book, even tho the basic underlying principles haven't changed....

Back in 2003, when the SBD first came out, I was a freshman in college and terrified of the "freshman 15". My mom bought me the first [book: The South Beach Diet] and my freshman 15 was a negative 15. Through out college, I remember thinking that I was overweight, but looking back at those pictures, I truly miss how skinny I was! Through different doctors and vitamins and pills and such I got to a point where I gained a rapid and unexplainable amount of about 50 lbs and haven't been able to lose it. I have no desire to exercise, and whenever I do, I just feel worse and more hopeless. I kinda gave up on the SBD way of life, because it wasn't working, and with now feeding the husband, my methods were hopeless.
Well, now [author: Arthur Atgatson] has updated and more than republished his old SBD book, this one is completely an upgrade. [book: The South Beach Diet Supercharged] does have all of the old advice, but so much more, and more in depth, that makes more sense. Plus there is more scientific data to back it up, and more success stories to brag about with the lifestyle. The supercharged part of the diet now is the emphasis on exercise. Not to say that he had not mentioned it back in 2003, he had, but not in the depth and detail with the experts backing his work as it is in this book. It's taken me about three weeks to read the book, and I've been on the diet for about two and some weeks, and have so far lost 'eh about 10 lbs. It's not fabulous, but it is more than I've been able to do in the last year. So, even though, on day two of the diet, the hubby stocked the fridge with Dr. Pepper and Ginger Ale (my favorites). I haven't had a one, and I'm doing fairly well. I read the exercise portions today, and they appear simple, and appear to be something I am capable of... Just saying, I despise exercise, and the activities are put into a format of ONLY 20 MINUTES a day, and no more. So, I might be able to fit that in between a book or two. I read most of this book in the first 2 nights! It is not just a rehash of the first book, but it offers new and improved food lists, new menus, new tips for food replacement and best of all--a new exercise program. There are greta stories of people who have lived this lifestyle for over 5 years--which really validates the plan. If you are new to the SBD-this book is a must. If you have the old book--this one is still a good buy!!

Didn't find this book very helpfull at all. Basic common sense things.

I have been on the South Beach Diet since March 16th, 2008. The diet is great and I love the recipes. I was very excited when I heard this book was coming out because I knew exercise plays an important part of any diet plan. Now that I have the book, it has really helped in my overall fitness plan. I have started losing weight a little faster and I feel great! My energy level is even better and my endurance has improved. I definately would recommend this book. I also bought the workout DVD that goes with the book. Love it!

I went on the South Beach Diet three years ago and have lost over 15 lbs. I have now adapted it as my life style and have managed to keep the weight off. This new book expands on the old one offering a wider range of eating options and an easy to follow exercise regimen.
