The book has some good recipes but i feel that it is lacking in variety and a lot of the recipes are really everyday items that you would make without the cookbook. I think the recipes on the website are just as good and free

I really like this book. I am currently on Weight Watchers. Has some great recipes and helps me "defat" some of my old ones. Worth the money and I received it promptly and it was in excellent shape.

Im a big fan of this book! My favorite thing about it is the recipes are almost all designed to be one serving. I hate nothing like finding a lowfat/lowcal recipe that is only low fat because the serving is so small you need 4 to fill up. These recipes are made for real people, who are really hungry.
Im not currently on weight watchers, but its also a great book for anyone on that diet. I have been on weight watchers before and these recipes are mostly all high in fiber low in points. The ONLY thing i would change about this book to make it better? I would add more pictures. But then again you can find them all online on the website.. and for the price you cant beat it. Hungry Girl, based on the website of the same name, compiles common-sense approaches to cutting fat and calories through smart substitutions. Useful sidebars offer comparisons of similar commercial fast-food versions showing fat and calories.
In the beginning, Hungry Girl (Lisa Lillien) offers up a useful list of recommended products designed to save fat/calories, including light soymilks, numerous fat-free products, and light bread products. She also includes Top ATE kitchen essentials (measuring cups, blender, etc.). Beginning with breakfast, HG offers up low-fat versions of Egg McMuffins (184 cal, 2g fat), burritos (239 cal, 3g fat), French toast (195 cal, 1g fat), smoothies and oatmeal (with pumpkin and cinnamon...yum!). Other chapters embrace salads, soups, pastas, Guy Foods, desserts, and holiday dishes. Normally gut-busting items like chili dogs (109 cal, 1g fat), onion rings (153 cal, 1g fat), spicy crispy chicken sandwich (313 cal, 4.5 g fat), eggnog (98 cal, 2g fat), mint mocha freeze (55 cal, 0.5 g fat), and more are given low-fat makeovers courtesy of secret ingredients such as Eggbeaters, Fiber One bran cereal, and fat-free swaps like fat-free cheese, fat-free sour cream, etc. Cute drawings spice up the chapters. Generally, the recipes are nutritionally sound and easy to prepare, but a word of warning: low-fat and fat-free products are plumped up with sodium, so the sodium counts are *insanely* high for many items (upwards of a day's worth of sodium in a single recipe), and excess sodium consumption can result in water retention, bloating, and high blood pressure. Also, the numerous sugar-free products such as sweeteners and sugar-free mixes can cause a laxative effect in sensitive people. Also, the chapter on low-cal alcoholic beverages is suspect, since a recent study showed that mixing alcohol with diet sodas actually resulted in becoming intoxicated more quickly (21 minutes for absorption of diet soda mix versus 36 minutes for regular soda and alcohol). Of course, if you do choose to drink (these recipes can be made virgin), it's always a good idea to eat something first, which slows absorption into the bloodstream. But for stressed-out working moms (and dads), Hungry Girl offers many palatable swaps of popular food from major chains that are markedly lower in calories, fat, and sugar, including kid-friendly recipes, that may be a good way for families to eat more healthfully. Since I am attending Weight Watchers, many in our group have gotten the Hungry Girl Cookbook. I had to go through and put the Points on each recipe but this did give me a chance to read each of them extensively. One lady in our group decided to eat all new recipes from this book for a week and she lost 3 lbs. These are so easy to read and follow, and it is a fun book for ideas.

This cookbook comes with so much more than simply how to get a meal finished. It includes tips for dining out, doubling recipes and so much more.
I plan to share this book with many of my friends and family. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-01 01:17:29 EST)

This is a great cookbook for those trying to improve their food choices. Most recipes are single serving, but you just double or triple the ingredients to make more. This cookbook also has a lot of recipes with just a few ingredients. Very healthy choices and they taste GOOD! My recommendation, "buy it and use it"!

Hungry Girl: Recipes and Survival Strategies for Guilt-Free Eating in the Real World This is probably the greatest paperback I have ever owned. As a little old GreatGramma, who is inclined to be "pleasingly plump", I need an inspirational guide. And, this is definitely it--being diabetic and controlling it with diet, rather than medication, there is so much in this book that helps me. Before, I felt deprived of all the "goodies" and such that I could not have any longer, but this book has a way of making eating fun again. Plus, I am losing weight, a Double Bonus.

I browsed through the pink-tinged pages looking at the recipes, fighting my way through the over-enthusiastic use of exclamation marks and cute-and-confusing titles like "pizzalicious chop chop" (page 44) and "amazing ate-layer dip" (page 158). Intending to be "sassy" and "fun", the writing comes across as though it were the product of a calorie-obsessed teen-aged girl rather than an adult woman...
The author, Lisa Lillien, is "a self-appointed `foodoligist' (sic)" and founder of the website HungryGirl.com- a popular website with more than 100,000 subscribers. According to her website, she rightly states that she is neither a dietitian nor a food professional, but "an average female, struggling with the same food issues most females struggle with every day." Losing and gaining the same 10-15 pounds several times over, and trying "every diet under the sun," she has a self-admitted food obsession- counting calories and finding low-fat, low-carbohydrate substitutes for a wide variety of foods. The book, which is a natural extension of her popular website, is sadly rife with rather unnatural foods. For example, her "2-good twice-baked potato" (page 124, from"Manly Meals" Chapter 6) calls for fat-free American cheese and fat-free liquid non-dairy creamer. Is substituting the fats found in natural dairy products with things like corn syrup solids and Polysorbate 60 (both found in non-dairy creamer) such an excellent idea, however many calories might be saved? Polysorbate 60, as I have learned from a rather amusing article posted at Wired magazine, is: ...made by polymerizing ethylene oxide (a precursor to antifreeze) with a sugar alcohol derivative. The result can be a detergent, an emulsifier, or, in the case of polysorbate 60, a major ingredient in some sexual lubricants. Perhaps the dish should be re-christened "2-good twice-lubed potato." (And hint to the recipe testers- you might want to sprinkle the potato with paprika and parsley after removing it from the oven...) I've only made 2 recipies from this book so far but they were both inedible. The faux fried chicken and the onion rings were really disgusting. Apparently Fiber One should only be eaten for breakfast,(and I'm not sure I can do this anymore after those onion rings!) I will try more of the recipies and write another review afterwards.

I just got this book a few days ago and I have made a few of the dishes already and they are fantastic! I made the "lord of the onion rings" and the choclate bread pudding and they were so good. I will of course make them again and an added bonus is my husband loves them as well. I am a pretty good cook and he likes mostly what I make but he kept raving about these things. Also, the recipes are easy and most of them don't require a ton of ingredients like other cook books.

I got this book at a local store and was excited about it, at first, but at looking at some of the recipes, decided to take it back. I didn't realize the author wasn't a dietician but simply a person who decided to study what she ate and started a blog. Many of the "recipes" are just common sense substitutions. For example, one of the recipes is for a lean hamburger and the ingredients include a veg-burger on a whole wheat bun. Already being imersed in a healthy lifestyle (which includes nutrition) this book did not give me any information that I already didn't know. For those just starting their healthy lifestyle, this would be a great help. For those of us who are already savvy, I would recommend any book from Devin Alexander instead.

not a bad book for ideas; I have several other health books and I can say I will use this one as much as the others; seems to have very simplistic recipes where the others always seem to use incredients I have problems finding in my little town.

I had been to the HG website about a dozen times, tried a few recipes and was very happy with the results, so I bought the book. I LOVE the book! So many wonderful recipes in there, which are truly handy if you are just tapped as far as low-fat/low-cal recipe ideas go. There really are just so many frozen Lean Cuisines you can eat before enough is enough! Great book, lots of great survival tips and I found it to be a very helpful tool in weight loss! There is hope for those of us who have run out of ideas!

This book has easy to follow instructions, and lots of helpful hints for the preparation of the dishes. It was also easy to figure out the "points" of each dish, since the nutrition facts were printed out. This recipe book has a great variety of catagories and I recommend it to all, even those of you who don't really like to cook, like me!

I've been on Weight Watchers for a few months now and I find the Hungry Girl book is invaluable for finding recipes that are WW friendly. I don't have to eat like "on a diet". She has recipes for every day fun foods that are low fat, low cal - like her Chicken Tenders or Onion Rings, salads, baked goods, soups. Every recipe is so easy and yummy! This isn't gourmet eating. It's what we really eat every day. Although this isn't really a Weight Watchers book, the author is a regular contributor to their web site and the points values for all the recipes in the book can be found on the Hungry Girl web site. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is trying to cut calories and fat and I hope another book will follow soon! And don't miss all the tips for travelling by plane or car, tips for eating in restaurants, snack tips, etc. Great book!

If you are looking for a variety of reciepes that are quick, easy to find ingredients for, and a cinch to prepare, this is the book for you. These recipes are great for single servings (most are presented this way and can easily be adjusted for the amount you need). Also very handy for ideas for those following the Weight Watchers Points Plans. Her writing style is entertaining to read, and her website is awesome! Check it out! You won't go wrong with the purchase of this book-or with the foods that Hungry Girl endorses on her site. Happy Chewing!!

Heard about this book online and found recipes at the website, decided to take a chance and buy the book. So far I have not been let down once by any of the recipes. My family absolutely loves the fettuccini dish and the pumpkin muffins. I love that I can entertain my girlfriends with martinis that won't leave them blaming me for their saddle bags! So great, my aunt and mom asked me to pick one up for them after copying down a few of the recipes. So now I have purchased 3 books total. Thanks HG.

My favorite thing about this book is the back part where they have mini sections on eating out at Chinese, Sushi and with movie theatre foods. Explains what is good to eat and best to avoid. The recipes in the book are fresh and fun too and easy to follow along with using ingredients I have at home. Written to target women but anyone can enjoy it.

I've had the whole family on WW and added Hungry Girl's book to our collection. I love the humorous style in which she writes...makes you feel better about "dieting". But since it's a whole new life style, I don't call it a diet anymore...;)
Anyway, the recipes are easy to follow and easy to ammend if so desired. Our family of 4 has lost over 200 pounds...not just by following Hungry Girl's book but it sure has helped. Bravo on a job well done Lisa!!! Hurry up and do another one soon!!! Thank you! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-23 01:10:18 EST)

To be fair, I'm not quite sure why I bought this book in the first place. I don't really visit Ms. Lillien's website very often, and sometimes her caloric shockers would just depress me and make me not want to eat anything. However, I just grabbed it at the bookstore since I had a credit so it would be pretty cheap.
I am so happy I did. So far I've done about seven of the recipes in this book (busy girl, I am!) and they have ranged from good to blissful. I made her chicken pot pie, which someone could probably cook in their sleep (a big bonus if you're sick, say, and are totes craving cpp!) and it is so. good. My father told me it was the best chicken pot pie he'd ever had, ever. Plus, after eating her recipes I don't feel immediately hungry like I do if I eat a Lean Cuisine, say. It seems that the most controversy, if one could apply that word here, surrounding HG's recipes are that they contain too many "processed foods." Well, on the whole, her recipes contain way more vegetables and soy than those in "normal" cookbooks. Her salads are absolutely bursting with veggies and so are the soups! Even her "Sloppy Janes" contain veg. I did have trouble adjusting to the Cool Whip Free, since Cool Whip has always sort of scared me, but I don't think the recipes taste gross because of it. As for the Splenda thing, my mom really likes it because she's diabetic and it doesn't affect her blood sugar. Hey, I'm all for organic and healthy (I am ADDICTED to shopping at Trader Joe's), so if any of you can find an all-natural way for her to eat sugar without crashing, please let me know! The idea that we can just eat "sensible" portions of "normal" food is also nil, at least in this country. I spent ten months living in France, ate croissants for breakfast and huge steaks at night, not to mention various sausages, potatoes, and veg all fried in buttah, and lost weight. Why? Well, maybe the fact that I walked everywhere helped! Here in the States most people don't have that option. So until our cities start wising up to the fact that we can't and shouldn't drive everywhere, we need to find workable options to balance our caloric intake with our caloric burn. Besides, when presented with a huge, creamy bowl of fettucine alfredo, are you REALLY going to eat that sensible fist-sized portion of pasta? I don't think so. Hungry Girl has really done us a great service by changing our fave fatty foods into non-guilty, delicious meals. She's doing a great job. Thanks, HG! I love this book. It gives you lots of useful tips and ideas. It gives you a new spin on recipes. I get bored with food after awhile, this helped me learn new ways to cook. Single serve recipes are great when your the only one in the house changing your eating habits. I bought mine on an impulse, I should have waited it is way less expensive here than anywhere else. Check out their website, lots of great info there too.

I'm using it as a supplement for those types of foods (like egg rolls, green bean cassarole, onion rings, etc) that he loves but are a little high in fat for my liking. Only problem is a lot of the recipes have a lot of processed foods but I'm using the recipes as a base and adding what I can to make it "healthier" or making the rest of the meal more natural! I read through this book once and have now begun to inplement some of the recipes and choices that it outlines. I was a little disappointed a the pictures in the book but the advise is what I was looking for and that part is phenomenal.

As a WW member, I think this is a great book! I've tried a few of the recipes and some will become staples, and there some I wouldn't bother with again. I don't think that this is meant to be a cookbook to live by, but is a cookbook to supplement your healthy diet. Sometimes I crave onion rings....buying the pre-made kind or ordering out would use a week's worth of points for me. And the jalapeno poppers are fabulous! HG's recipes satisfy the craving. My plan is to use this cookbook to supplement my WW program. I think it's great!

I like the writing style of Hungry Girl. It's been a lot of fun to read. I've only made 2 recipes so far; one was good; the other I need to try again. The problems may have been of my own making.
I do wish the recipes were written so the ingredient list went in the order used. That is a standard recipe writing format and makes it easy to check that you've used all the ingredients and added them at the appropriate time. Since overall these are easy and without a ton of ingredients, it is doable. If there is ever an HG2, I'd like to see that change made. If there is an HG2, I'll buy it too. I subscribe to HG's website and eagerly awaited the day when I could purchase a book full of the recipes I enjoy so much. I am not disappointed!!! I read through the entire book on my vacation, and there are some recipes I know I will try and others I have already tried, and some that are just not for me. Overwhelmingly though, the book is a winner. Also, if you are smart about cooking, there are many substitutions that can be made while keeping the recipes close to original but suited to your tastes. Just remember to modify the nutritional info and points values.

I really didn't xpect to like this book when I got it but I was delightfully surprised as I made recipe after recipe and everything but 1 has turned out delicious. The 1 recipe that did not turn out so great was the dreamy chocolate peanut butter fudge but I did not follow the recipe so I'm going to give it another try.
My entire family has enjoyed all of the drink recipes that I have made and the chocolate brownie muffins made with pumpkin. Tonight we are trying the Southwestern Surprise Soup (though we always called it taco soup when I made it before). It's really hard to believe that these recipes are low in calories, sugar and fat. Yes, these recipes use a LOT of processed foods but we live in a real world and I would rather eat low cal processed foods from time to time than high fat/high sugar junk food. The best thing about this book is that it has encouraged my family and my parents to start trying to eat healthy again and take control of our weight and fitness in general. You just don't feel deprived eating food like this. Lisa Lillien has a great sense of humor that comes through in all of her writings. I would recommend signing up for her daiy newsletter on her web site as well. It's filled with humor, recipes and great tips. Using pumpkin for the eggs and oil when making cake mixes is just genius! I tried it with a spice cake and a can of pumpkin and it was like a pumpkin pie muffin. Try it if you like that sort of thing. :) PRO: Filled with "light" humor and recipes for things that you would normally feel guilty eating or drinking. The recipes are delicious and most are easy to make. This might also get you on the road to a healthier you. CON: Uses a lot of processed foods and the noodle substitute recommenation is not readily available. Some ingredients are hard to find and might have to be mail ordered. I had to order some of the the low cal/sugar free syrups recommended. I don't think I will be ordering the tofu noodles. Just use high fiber noodles instead. Overall, I would recommend the book to you. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-15 03:16:24 EST)

If you enjoy chemical substitutes vs natural foods then this is the book for you. This book substitutes unnatural ingedients to lower caloric intake and doesn't take into account the affect on the body that man made chemical substitutions does to a body.
Instead of Splenda for this and that, how about natural cane sugar? How about portion control instead of gluttony? How about ingesting what is whole and natural instead of what has been artificially created in a lab, that still has inconclusive evidnece of the affect it has on the human body? If your looking for a cook book that will give you short cuts to a healthier life style this isn't it. It is full of chemical substitutes. There should be a new ad campaign for Splenda. "Splenda the Tobacco of the New Millenium" Don't get me wrong. This isn't an attack on just Splenda. It is all of the artifical additives that are placed in foods these days. Try a more natural diet with your children. Watch how passive and more intelligent they become. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-15 03:16:24 EST)
