It was very interesting to read, but some things didn't fit as they should. If you are interested in this genre, then by all means read it. It's always good to have many samples of the same topic. I have found other books slightly better though. It's another way of approaching explanations for things that are hard to understand or believe. I have had things happen to me that are not just coincidences, there are none. That is how I was lead to find, purchase and read this book. The more information the better for our lives and how we live them.

(Hide Review...)  Paranormal Phenomena for the Novice
Reviewer Permalink
This book appears to have been written for general readers who have an interest in learning about the paranormal, i.e., ghosts, afterlife, etc. It is not a book aimed at convincing skeptics of the existence of ghosts, nor does it appear to be directed towards well seasoned paranormal buffs (although they too may benefit from some of the material). As a result, the author has presented a sweeping overview of the world of the paranormal, mainly based on his own extensive personal experiences. Topics include: a description of death, the nature and types of ghosts, the afterlife and its various levels of existence, paranormal energy fields, chakras, hauntings, possessions, communicating with ghosts, ghost hunting, etc. All this is peppered with many anecdotes, as experienced by the author. Throughout the book, the author emphasizes the importance of always maintaining a very positive mental attitude towards oneself and towards others - good advice no matter what one's beliefs are. The book is written in a very friendly, accessible and engaging style with a very positive slant. The author has been very careful to ensure that any specialized jargon is explained when first used. As a result, this book can be painlessly enjoyed by general readers who have an interest in this field. However, the book's lack of any hard-core irrefutable scientific evidence for the existence of ghosts may be frowned upon by skeptics, unless they are either very open-minded or curious about current thinking in this area.

I am a bit skeptical about the subject even though I had strong experiences in my life , I think I am more skeptical about the people or the great amount of charlatans there are around the world talking about spirits. I can not denied there is a spiritual life in different forms that we can not see , as we do not see the air we breath every day but does exist. Mr. Van Praagh have a distinct approach about the spiritual subjects and a simple way to communicate his experiences and views to the reader and it seems somewhat honest to me , I like the book mainly because made me rethink about death , about our life and how we live, how the universe around us change and interact with us and is still the big mystery of human kind. To conclude I like the message conveyed in the book and how Mr. Van Praagh touched the lives of other people.

This book is very interesting and is worth reading if you believe in ghosts. James talks about common experiences that all people have right before death and relates them to his beliefs about the spirit world. I want to believe what he writes about, but once you watch his videos on you tube you'll see that he's a complete fake.

(Hide Review...)  Enjoyable Yet Needing Depth
Reviewer Permalink
I am not a paranormal expert, but I do enjoy reading and learning about all things in the genre, so this book by James Van Praagh appealed to me immediately. Having just finished it this afternoon, I find that while it was indeed entertaining, it was lacking a certain depth that I was hoping for.

Van Praagh is a rather well-known medium, and is also co-producer of the CBS tv series Ghost Whisperer. The stories of dealing with the dead in this book showcase people he has helped come to terms with loss and lingering loved ones who need help moving toward the Light. Those stories are intriguing and filled with heartfelt emotion, and even if I have a bit of skepticism at times, I feel that Van Praagh truly wants to give solace and aid to those with whom he works. It's when Van Praagh moves from the titular "Ghosts Among Us" to telling us how he views the spiritual world that I found my interest wavering. It's not that I disbelieve his theories, but to be honest, that's not why I picked up this book. I wanted to read more of the interactions with ghosts and the experiences of regular people who had gone to Van Praagh for guidance. I also must admit that my skepticism hit a healthy high when Van Praagh began mentioning Abraham Lincoln as one of his spirit guides (we should all be so lucky!). Maybe it's true, maybe it's not; it just came away as bragging and unlikely to me.

This is not to say that I didn't enjoy this book; Van Praagh seems sincere enough in most respects and I do feel he must have some sort of gift for speaking with the dead. I admit to skimming the bits about chahkras and energies, though I did find the idea of ridding myself of negative energy a worthwhile idea. I just was expecting something more, and that may make my disappointment with the book more my own than Van Praagh's. The idea of the book just seemed scattered to me; Van Praagh should have done two books, one about ghostly encounters and one about spiritual guidance...and yes, they are two separate ideas.

The book is quite a page turner and provides a good bit of intellectual entertainment and diversion. I read it like one would watch a fictional movie, allowing for a "suspension of belief" in order to be entertained or simply to ponder appealing ideas. However I caught the author early on in what I consider to be a major error revealing utter fabrication. Usually in these types of books, the authors are clever enough to avoid any specific detail in recounting physic events or stories - that is, sufficient lack of detail such that the events or stories can not be verified.
Early on in the book the author relates a real-life story about a young professional race car driver who was killed somewhere around 2006 (no later) and the car exploded. Now, the author should have realized that an event like this, in the age of blogs and instant historical archives of news would be easily verified. A detailed and thorough search reveals that no such event ever occurred. If it were true (remember we are talking about a Professional race car driver), as the author purports, such an event would have made the news instantly.

I have read all of James' books and feel he is the genuine thing and far more knowledgeable than some of the other popular authors out there that write information about the other side. This book was a quick read and contained a lot of material regarding Spiritualist beliefs along with personalized experiences and stories from James. However, after reading his other books, to me, it was mostly a duplication of material. It was also geared more to those who have no background, experience, or belief about the other side. If you have been in the field for years, it may be a waste of time, that is not said with any disrespect for this wonderfully sincere man. I will pass the book on to an elderly aunt who has only sporadically dabbled in this type of reading.

The overall message in Ghosts Among Us is that we are not separate from our lost loved ones, even if we don't physically see them. And James'explanations seem to assure us of eternal love among family and friends.

(Hide Review...)  Useless blend of near death experiences and general psychic non-sense
Reviewer Permalink
I want to start this review by stating that I am neither an atheist nor somebody who opposes the notion of the supernatural in general. Quite the opposite: I have always been very open to and interested in near-death experiences, parapsychological phenomena, etc. However, I am very sceptical when people claim that they can see things that are not visible to the general population. Whenever somebody asserts that he or she has a special gift, chances are that their special gift is limited to their ability to fill their pockets without doing real work. That seems to be very much the case with van Praagh. This book is a poorly written amalgamation of anecdotes and old "theories" that every 10 year old is acquainted with these days because they are so omnipresent that even Hollywood regularly uses them ("when you die, there is a tunnel and bright light and a loving superior being" -- oh wow, really, I've never heard that one before). And of course anything preternatural that could possibly happen to a person in their lifetimes has happened to van Praagh.
Lastly, van Praagh constantly emphasizes his mistrust in the Catholic Church -- I am Catholic and offensive comments about a religion that's 2000 years old from a guy who thinks that Buddha and Luke Skywalker have had equally positive influences on humankind seem kind of inappropriate.
Sorry guys, but if you want solid, well written and well researched books about life after death etc., grab the classics, i.e. Dr. Moody, Elisabeth Kuebler-Ross or Scott Peck.
"Ghosts among us" is completely useless and obviously another attempt to cash in -- shame on me for having contributed to van Praagh's bank account.

Most of us have questions about "the beyond"; if one exists, is it here with us, are there ghosts. Ghosts Among Us is an excellent tour through the experiences of James Van Praagh. He has written this book so that the reader can understand and even empathize with those he seems to be communicating with in the after-life. This book does not seem to play-up his experiences. I feel that it is an honest account of his interesting gift and should be viewed that way.
I have never purchased a book on this topic before. However, I plan to purchase his next book.

Ghosts Among Us , was a very informative book and easy to read. I had just lost my 9 yr. old grandaughter to brain cancer. Even though I have been metaphysical for 30 yrs., it consoled me to read Van Praagh's view on this belief system. I have experienced the electronic signals during the first month of her passing on and it just confirmed that our loved ones are watching over us even though we cannot see them. I no longer look UP to Heaven because I believe heaven is just a veil away. If anyone needs a gentle book to answer some haunting questions, this is the book to read.

Having had parents who, like Van Praagh, were clairaudient and clairvoyant, reading this book was like hearing them tell their entertaining stories about the spirits they could both see and hear. Only Van Praagh takes it a step further and describes the Astral plane where many find themselves after dying. He tells the ways in which our loved ones try to communicate to us that they are still with us. This book is a wonderful gift for people who desire to know more about what happens to us when we die, and will take away the fear of death.

I found the author to be pompous at times in his style of writing. The narrative itself, from the author's perspective, was interesting, but should not be taken as fact. I think the material is of a more subjective nature, and those who wish to read his book should read similar material by different authors to gain a collective perspective.
