“Explorers depend on the North Star when there are no other landmarks in sight. The same relationship exists between you and your right life, the ultimate realization of your potential for happiness. I believe that a knowledge of that perfect life sits inside you just as the North Star sits in its unaltering spot.”
Martha Beck has helped hundreds of clients find their own North Star, fulfill their potential, and live more joyfully. Now, she shares her step-by-step program that will help you take the exhilarating and frightening journey to your own ideal life. Finding Your Own North Star will teach you how to read your internal compasses, articulate your core desires, identify and repair the unconscious beliefs that may be blocking your progress, nurture your intuition, and cultivate your dreams from the first magical flicker of an idea through the planning and implementation of a more satisfying life. Martha Beck offers thoroughly tested case studies, questionnaires, exercises, and her own trademark wit and wisdom to guide you every step of the way. |

Put the telescope away; the North Star mentioned here is a human body, not a heavenly one. And like Polaris, which has guided sailors for centuries, the human body's gut feelings and emotions can help guide a wayward soul back to his or her "essential self." In this absorbing combination of detailed self-awareness exercises and true stories from her own counseling experience (equal parts sobering and hysterically entertaining), Harvard-trained sociologist Martha Beck invites readers to explore their heart's desires and the vast social webs that keep such desires in check. The goal is not to forsake the "social self" and indulge every emotional impulse of the "essential self." Rather, Beck gives readers the tools and the encouragement to achieve maximum happiness by harmonizing these typically divergent voices.
Beck (author of Expecting Adam) admits that repairing a damaged emotional compass and setting out on such a vital journey--which often involves painful realizations and changes--"has all the combined attractions of suicide and childbirth." But the payoff, she concludes, is a love affair with real life. To that end, she walks readers through a lengthy exercise to evaluate their current lifestyle's pleasures and pains, teaches the process of listening to the body for directional cues, describes how to extract "soul shrapnel" (healing all those nasty, self-defeating emotional wounds), and provides an intriguing "Map of Change" to achieve an authentic life. Beck's impressive knowledge, her engaging (if somewhat irreverent) voice, and her ability to parse this scary process into achievable steps make her a new champion in the self-help arena. --Liane Thomas |

I see myself and just about everyone I know in this book. It is a good read, interesting, insightful and has a lot of exercises to help understand what's going on in your life and how you can change the things that feel wrong. Martha Beck is just plain wonderful!

Her humor and intelligence amaze me with every book I read of hers. I'm a big fan. This is a timely book for me as I try to sell my business, raise 2 young boys and figure out my next career move. I share the main points of this book with all of my friends. There is a reason why Oprah publishes her work every month in her magazine. Martha Beck speaks to me a lot in this book and I am listening.

Joanne Scaglione, Author: Living The Secret Everyday: My Secret Workbook
Loved this book. In an easy-to-read writing style Ms Beck does a beautiful job of showing the reader that no matter where he/she is he/she can get to wherever he/she wants. A joyful and abundant life is awaiting for you if you stay focused and don't limit yourself by limiting thoughts we've grown up with or society has taught us.Excellent tips, strategies and exercises. I am in the process of working with a professional coach and she recommended this book. I have found it to be very helpful in guiding me to deeply reflect on what I REALLY want as opposed to what I think I should want. Martha Beck is very funny. She provides exercises to stimulate thinking and move forward. Hooray!

This book is less expensive than seeing a therapist, and in my case, just as effective for solving the "what am i supposed to do with my life?" puzzle. Written with a sense of humor, and effective tools for getting to know the *real* you, I highly recommend this book for anyone feeling lost, hopeless, and searching for answers.

This book provides a roadmap in times of stress and change, when we're on that road to somewhere but we just aren't sure where it'll end up. We can make it through, and the path chosen is all up to us. Beck provides insight and exercises how to get there, for each individual's own journey. There are moments of "death" in life, whether it's triggered by an actual physical death of someone we love, a life altering event or even the last child leaving the "nest," we change and grow and our life becomes something different than what it was before. Beck helps us develop a plan for the next step in our lives.

Anything Martha Beck writes is fabulous but this classic, one of her earliest, is still my favorite. Beck is funny and smart and offers real wisdom on how to craft that ultimate life for yourself. There is much self-esteem building going on in Finding Your own North Star from dealing with emotions, saying "yes" and "no" and dealing with fear effectively. For a Beck sampling, pick up a copy of O: The Oprah Magazine. Beck writes a monthly column which is hands-down of the best features in the magazine.

I heard about this book from a friend and it sounded interesting. I learned to look at people who make me uncomfortable, differently. I really enjoyed the excercises. It gave me greater self awareness. I would recommend this to any one of my friends.

This book is outstanding. Very clear & easy to understand. Informative & eye opening as to the root of many of our emotions as well as our responses or non-responses to people & situations. I highly recommend it for people who are searching for direction in their life or answers to why they are the way they are.

I went into this book skeptically but I am now a huge fan. Martha Beck is witty, insightful and the book is full of aha moments and real insight into what holds us back in life.
Like many of the best life guides, the information isn't some new creation but solid, thoughtful views of the universe and the way people react within it. I would recommend it highly for anyone struggling to transform into a greater version of themselves. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-23 14:12:52 EST)

This is an excellent book because it provides motivation and very practical exercises to help to move the reader from wishing for change to making change happen. Martha Beck writes with a wonderful sense of humor as well as sharing her own journey which I found inspirational. Since this book is about potentially radical change she also prepares readers for that and for how to deal with the fear and internal resistance that may arise as one takes the steps to find a truly happy and rewarding life. I found the book provided hope and motivation in facing some difficult career challenges.

The approach of this author is very detailed. I consider the problem of naming one's calling very brief and simple in case the right approach is applied. And this book is so detailed and so long and the printing is so minute...Too much for as simple subject as defining one's calling should be. Three stars for endeavour.

This book speaks wonderfully to our universal need to have a "star" to guide our life "ship" by. I highly recommend this book and FREE YOUR MIND by Anthony Stultz (a bestseller in the UK) who helps clarify the need to be clear about which direction our inner "north" is pointing to; freedom and success or ego slavery and depression. Enjoy.

I loved this book. It has been a blessing and helped me overcome my own inner struggles. Having lived a mentally tormenting life, it is not easy to overcome lifelong disapprovals of others. Martha has written a wonderfully insightful and helpful book. I totally agree that we have to follow our feelings, our gut feeling. Our inner selves always seem to know the answer. Don't miss this book. Highly recommended.

Every chapter of this book brought incredible insights. From learning about the imbalance between our essential selves and our social selves to going inside myself to find out what I really love doing to absorbing the change chart and trying to determine where I currently find myself and where I might be going. I laughed out loud at her humor - so much that my friend wanted to borrow the book. I found I couldn't part with it and have instead purchased one for her and turned my copy into a workbook that stays with me for easy reference. I love the way Martha Beck writes and thinks. I am looking forward to more books by this marvelous author.

In a sense this book reminds me of "Can We Live 150 Year?" by M. Tombak. These two books deal with seemingly two different subject, (Tombak focuses on healthy life style and longevity) but they have so much in common; they both influenced me tremendously. They turned my life around and gave me new purpose; they get me going again and again. Both authors (Martha Beck, and Mikhail Tombak) have the tremendous power of getting the reader empowered. I feel inspired and energized whenever I reach for one of the books and read a few chapters... I suggest giving them a closer look...

After reading this book, I sat down and pathed out my real dreams and solid goals for my life. I was on track for some; however, there were some that I was totally unaware of at this point in my life. I know, according to Beck, that the transition isn't going to be paved with all roses. However, I have created my life "careplan" and will implement it. My situation was simular to others' lifes. For I didn't want to be a nurse; however, I was to return to my Old Order Amish sect as a "plain" nurse. Therefore, I openly accepted my sect's "calling" for my life and finishing nursing school. I added social work as a double major; however, my Bishop and deacon drove down to EKU and made me drop it because they felt that social workers weren't needed. By branching out on my own as a bestselling author and business owner, I finally was gearing toward some of my life goals and purpose. After finishing this book, I added more goals and a bigger plan. Thanks, Ms. Beck! Your the best!

Beck's sassy style and mixture of life lessons, wisdom, and leading questions are an enjoyable read. Not only did I find my North Star ... Beck's method promotes the courage to claim your dreams. This is a book for anyone committed and ready to say good-bye to people-pleasing and hello to their authentic life. Two other books that were invaluble to forging my career path were "The Authentic Career" by Maggie Craddock and "Now What?" from Laura Berman Fortgang. Career evolution is a journey ... and you won't get lost if you keep your eyes on your own north star.
