| Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
It has become common knowledge that childhood obesity rates are increasing every year. But the rates continue to rise. And between busy work schedules and the inconvenient truth that kids simply refuse to eat vegetables and other healthy foods, how can average parents ensure their kids are getting the proper nutrition and avoiding bad eating habits?
As a mother of three, Jessica Seinfeld can speak for all parents who struggle to feed their kids right and deal nightly with dinnertime fiascos. As she wages a personal war against sugars, packaged foods, and other nutritional saboteurs, she offers appetizing alternatives for parents who find themselves succumbing to the fastest and easiest (and least healthy) choices available to them. Her modus operandi? Her book is filled with traditional recipes that kids love, except they're stealthily packed with veggies hidden in them so kids don't even know! With the help of a nutritionist and a professional chef, Seinfeld has developed a month's worth of meals for kids of all ages that includes, for example, pureed cauliflower in mac and cheese, and kale in spaghetti and meatballs. She also provides revealing and humorous personal anecdotes, tear-out shopping guides to help parents zoom through the supermarket, and tips on how to deal with the kid that "must have" the latest sugar bomb cereal. But this book also contains much more than recipes and tips. By solving problems on a practical level for parents, Seinfeld addresses the big picture issues that surround childhood obesity and its long-term (and ruinous) effects on the body. With the help of a prominent nutritionist, her book provides parents with an arsenal of information related to kids' nutrition so parents understand why it's important to throw in a little avocado puree into their quesadillas. She discusses the critical importance of portion size, and the specific elements kids simply must have (as opposed to adults) in order to flourish now and in the future: protein, calcium, vitamins, and Omega 3 and 6 fats. Jessica Seinfeld's book is practical, easy-to-read, and a godsend for any parent that wants their kids to be healthy for a long time to come. Bob Greene, author of The Best Life Diet:
Questions for Jessica Seinfeld Amazon.com: My seven-year-old inspects the food on his plate like a hawk (if there was a hawk that only ate bagels and macaroni). Anything with the least bit of color goes untouched. What's a mom or dad to do? Seinfeld: Two of my three children were exactly the same way. The vegetables, which I worked hard to prepare, not only went untouched, they were often insulted ("Eeewww...!"). And the harder I pushed them to eat good food, the harder they pushed back. We were literally ruining each other's meals. That conflict was the inspiration for the book. I realized I wasn't going to win the power struggle, so I decided to join them on their turf. I started with the foods they would eat (chicken nuggets, tacos, macaroni and cheese) and I added a pureed vegetable of the same color. So if your child only eats macaroni and cheese (or noodles and butter), you should add cauliflower or yellow squash puree, which utterly disappears. Everyone wins: they get the nutrition they need and you get the satisfaction of doing a better job as a parent. Amazon.com: That same picky second-grader will often try something new one time and declare he likes it, but the next time we serve it, he seems to have lost his spirit of adventure and won't eat it again. Any advice? Seinfeld: First and foremost, remember that not every meal you prepare for a child will be a success. Kids at this age are naturally testing preferences, pushing boundaries, and changing their minds. That's part of their development and those are urges not worth battling. As I learned the hard way, the more pressure you apply, the more kids will "hate" certain foods. And, while it would be nice if kids had a "spirit of adventure" when it comes to food, I've found it's best to eliminate adventure and stick to the basics--foods they already love, laden with added nutrition they don't know is there. Finally, be consistent, firm and patient. I have a rule in my house: you don't have to eat what's on the plate, but what's on the plate is all that's being served. Eventually, they come around. Amazon.com: Are your kids interested in cooking yet? Are there ways to introduce healthy eating habits with the child helping in the kitchen? Seinfeld: My children are interested in baking because they love any excuse to be around sweets. But I make sure whatever we bake has pureed veggies in it and is actually low in refined sugar. So my children actually think baking cakes, brownies, and cookies with sweet potatoes, carrots, or beets is the proper way to cook. Amazon.com: What are your kids' favorite recipes in the book? Seinfeld: Every recipe in this book is a favorite. I've tried out countless creations on my kids, and if they didn't love them (which happened frequently!), they didn't make it into the book. But, if pressed, I will say they are crazy about the tacos, the chicken nuggets, the brownies, the pancakes, and my birthday cakes. [See her recipe for delicious brownies made with carrot and spinach.] Amazon.com: I have to ask it, since I know many readers will: do these recipes require a squad of personal chefs to prepare, or can a busy mom or dad without seven years of Seinfeld residuals put them together by themselves? Seinfeld: I'm a busy mom with three kids, a job, and a husband who travels constantly, but I'm uncompromising when it comes to my kids' health and nutrition. Leaving that to someone else is out of the question. My parents had three kids and both worked too, and we always managed to eat healthy meals as a family. That's the standard I've always wanted to meet. So when I started creating recipes from my pureed veggie experiments, I had three criteria: my kids had to love the food, the preparation had to be quick, and the process had to be simple. Believe me, if I can do these recipes quickly and easily, ANYONE can. Amazon.com: How are the reading skills of Sascha, your oldest child and pickiest eater? Have you blown your cover by publishing your secrets? Seinfeld: My daughter is almost seven and she not only can read, she's fully aware that her mother cooks with vegetables all the time. Two years ago, she was a picky four-year-old who thought she hated vegetables. But once she was converted and started seeing those purees going into the desserts she loves, she started to ignore the fact that they were going into the rest of her foods as well. Now it's the only kind of cooking she knows. So, to anyone with young children--start cooking Deceptively Delicious food when they are young! It's much easier than trying to change habits later on.

I think this book is great for young mothers trying to feed their kids vegetables. Recipes look easy. One thing I would suggest is that the small amount of veggies that are introduced in these cakes, cookies, etc., the children are not getting their required daily servings, so other measures would need to be taken to get the little ones more veggies into their diets. But for a start, to get kids to eat their veggies without them knowing and making the foods more nutritious, yes, it's a good book.

We have embarked on a healthier way of life recently and I thought that this would be a great addition to my collection. I bought this to help with making and packing school lunches that would keep my kids healthy and that they would enjoy. Unfortunately, the food just doesn't taste good. I made 7 or 8 of the recipes and all of them were quite bad. I think I will go back to my own recipes. I will pack fresh fruits and vegetables. I will make healthy sandwiches and baked chicken flautas with more chicken in them. I won't try to fool my kids. There has to be a better way than this.
One other note, most of these recipes are quite labor intensive. Despite making the purees in advance, I still spent quite a bit of time in the kitchen. Time most of us don't have. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-20 07:26:50 EST)

The recipes are very good and easy to make. But I am very disappointed that there is no nutritional information (calories, fat, protein, sodium, carbohydates, etc.). Such information would make a more complete book.

This book makes eating healthy for children easy! Love the recipes! My daughter hates vegetables, but loves these recipes... her best friend even commented on how good the food was (and they didn't even know the veggies were hidden!!). Love it! Use it all the time!

I absolutely love this cookbook. I don't have any kids, so I'm not really the core demographic, but it's great for anyone who is just trying to incorporate healthy options in their diet. I've made most of the desserts in the book and they're all great and make me feel a little less guilty.

I have had this book for several months now, and I like it very much. I stumbled upon it and saw some very negative (and somewhat nasty) reviews. I certainly do not think that it is deserving of that. First and for-most Jessica Seinfeld says in the beginning of the book that she is no chef, and these are recipes she has tried on her own kids, and they like them. Whoever purchased this book thinking it was going to be full of world class meals designed by a world class chef is not very intelligent. Look at the author(not Julia Child here people)! This is a book to help you to get your children to eat more veggies. My son is 16 months old, and up until he was a year old he ate every veggie I put in front of him, then changed his tastes and eats everything but the veggies most of the time. So, I decided to include the veggies in the food he does eat, using this cookbook. (the mac and cheese is a huge hit! I love it, but do have to add a little extra seasonings in the adult portions-no biggie) However, I do still include veggies on his plate. In my mind he is offered the veggies and if he eats them-great, if not, I can feel good knowing that he ate some without knowing it. Do I feel bad about that? NO WAY! I dont want to make a big deal out of him not eating the veggies on his plate because I dont think its a good idea to force them on him. (my parents tried that, and I still hate veggies) I use the purees in almost all of my dinners (even the ones not from this cookbook) I have learned ways to incorporate them into everything. The bottom line here is that it is not deserving of some of the horrible reviews I have read. The book is what it says it is....take it or leave it! I'll take it!

Was so glad to see the idea's and to recognize there are other ways than begging and pleading to get real veggies in to my children's diets. Just didn't think outside the box at all. Spent the night getting things cooked up for that little bit of deception, so cannot wait to see how it goes over.

I bought the book in the hopes of getting my family to eat extra veggies. I always have a salad or veggie with dinner and lunch, alas, my son spits them out. So, I made the purees and tried the chicken nuggets, spaghetti pie, waffle sandwich, and a few other recipes. The nuggets burned even with extra oil, the waffles looked awful and the filling was nasty. The only decent recipe was the spaghetti pie. I added the carrot and broccoli puree to the meat and the meatballs were really moist.
I would recommend buying this when it only costs a few dollars or is given to you. I am going to try the sneaky chef and try to make my veggies look cute as shown in the annabeth karmel books. Good luck! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-17 00:37:15 EST)

After reading the other reviews I was hestitant on buying it but I thought this would be a great way for my son to eat veggies with food he already loves! We have made 3 recipes so far and have had no problems with them at all!! I recommend for the scrambled eggs with califlower to use the whole egg not just whites for the recipe. And be aware of being a little gassy afterwards! :O) I even modified a recipe for banana bread for zucchini bread and it turned out great! We love the mac and cheese with yellow squash. She tells you in the book how to prepare all the veggies for steaming and all nutrition values! I love it!! I'm trying the spinach and carrot brownies today and taking them to work for all to try out!! You must read all recommendations from her on how to prepare and eat the meal sometimes she says to eat cold or you can really taste veggie! I don't know what other moms had a problem with sometimes no matter what a kid won't eat all his veggies this way he can eat with out all the fussing!

The book includes many recipes where the flavor of nutricious vegatables are included in other foods most kids like to eat. Haven't yet tried the recipes because the amount of vegetables per serving seems to small. Instead I will use recipes that make vegetables taste better in and of themselves. The section listing the nutrition value of many vegetables is very useful.

a lot of work and mess and dishes for a small amount of veggie per serving. Just steam the veggies and eat them as is.

This book is fun to have kids guess what the secret ingredient is. Very surprising ingredients in some recipies. My kids never knew they had chick peas in their chocolate chip cookies. My husband didn't complain about carrots in his french toast. Fun.

Hello, I really like this recipe book. It was well thought out and it includes the tools you need to prepare the recipes. They did the work, the homework and included the helpful hints along the way. I have actually read the Recipe Book like an actualy book - page by page - and have enjoyed it. I am reaching the "best for last section - desserts". I think its a very good tool for mothers in need of preparing nutritional meals for their children without the whining and drama of trying to get the children to eat healthy food. Some may not like the deception part, but to me, why not make things a little easier for you and in the long run, easier for the children. It's a no brainer.

This is a great way to get children to eat vegstables. I do not cook, but my daughter cooks for my five year old grandchild. I hate to cook that is the trouble. One has to like to cook to really use this book. Otherwise, the idea of sneaking in veggies is great. The graphic are childish but the written content is adequate. Its the idea I like. I write social-history. Look up my work, there are several books Researching Chicano Communities: Social-Historical, Physical, Psychological, and Spiritual Space

This is the easiest cook book you will ever read. It features the easiest recipes for getting kids to eat veges! Very user friendly with pictures and commentaries all throughout. The book design is great with spiral binding to flip pages easily! I can't say enough good things - I will use it for all my children - all ten!!!! My grandchildren have eaten the deserts and not known they contained veges!

I bought this book for my niece, a young mother. She said she had heard about it and was delighted to get it. She said that she already "hides" healthy foods in spaghetti, and several other foods. Even her husband is impressed with what she does. She told me that she has a few favorites from the book. Her favorite chef is Rachel Ray. To me, even one or two successful recipes makes the book a success, especially if your child will eat healthy as an outcome. I don't know anyone who ever uses one source and only one source for a lifetime of cooking. If that were true, the Betty Crocker book would be all anyone needs!

I bought a copy of "Deceptively Delicious" because its cute cover caught my eye, and I had been hearing in the news about this concept of hiding vegetables in recipes and thought it a wonderful idea. After reading this book cover to cover, and trying several recipes, I was very disappointed. It was obvious to me (by all means read the book yourself and see if you agree) that a hired nutritionist had come up with many of the recipes -- they surely aren't family recipes that the author has been using for years with her own children. The fault with the broccoli/chicken nuggets another reviewer notes says it all.
I then bought a copy of the Sneaky Chef, which isn't as cute but has superior content. If you are trying to pick between the two, I have this advice. If you are a visual person, you might be inspired by the D.D. book, for it had a very talented graphic artist design the book. It is adorable as much as a cookbook can be. But if you want the best content, by far the Sneaky Chef is superior. The recipes are incredibly better, the quality of the content overall far better, the author has real-world experience in nutrition and cooking and food writing, and it is obvious that she really cooks these at home for her family & that she herself -- not some hired staff -- created the recipes. If you take the time to read both books thoroughly, and then to test a few recipes from each, you will see exactly what I mean. The difference between the chicken nugget recipes in the two books says it all. So do the recipes for the purees themselves. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-11 01:16:02 EST)

"Look Up" by Lisa Thaler is an engrossing account of an artist's life. Sacha Kolin was a modernist painter and sculptor with an enormous talent and a courageous spirit, all brought vividly to the page. It's an insightful and very compelling story of an artist and a life well-lived. I was deeply moved at times. I also laughed out loud! "Look Up" is a must-read for anyone interested in contemporary art or intriguing people.

I read through a lot of reviews before writing mine. I've also used recipes from The Sneaky Chef so I even have a comparison. My kids eat very few veggies and I've had countless nights of my oldest boys crying at the table for an hour or more over cold veggies. My youngest is autistic and won't hardly eat anything. My husband is somewhere in the middle. The recipes do have to be followed exactly. I've tried making changes, like using whole wheat flour or Splenda, and they don't work well. I used beets for the chicken nuggets and fried them in a regular amount of oil and they came out fine. The husband did notice the pink layer but he was the only one. The taste was completely hidden. I did try broccoli but I tried baking them and it didn't come out well. The brownies came out best with unsweetened chocolate. They do have a slightly spongy texture to them but the kids devoured them. Cauliflower is difficult to completely puree, which is a must. The eggs need cooked longer or on a higher temp to cook out all of the water. I've put the cauliflower into boxed mac&cheese without anyone noticing. The kids love their pancakes and french toast make with sweet potatoes and carrots more than they liked the regular kind. Spinach makes its way into everything that I make with hamburger now and is undetectable. The only problem that I see is that she made everything SO healthy. Fat is a flavor carrier, and I have a ton of egg yolks to do something with. So to anyone who buys the book and the flavor tastes "off", try adding more butter/oil and remake the recipe. We're coverts.

The Seinfeld kids are just as veggie haters as my own. That publicity photos from the middle is pretty much how my youngest son acts when I say to eat his vegetables. I'm here to say however that this is a book for the entire family. I hate broccoli. Always have, always will. With some of the recipes Mrs Seinfeld dishes out, I can eat my share again.

OK, so I jumped on the bandwagon after seeing Jessica Seinfeld on Oprah and bought the book. I was intrigued by the idea and started right away. I'll be honest, I have not used one of her recipes...YET, but I've incorporated the idea into our family dinners. I even took her idea of having my husband sit with me and talk while I pureed. Grant it, the process DID take me a little over an hour (an hour and 20 minutes actually) to steam (had the rice cooker AND micro steamer going) and puree 7 or 8 different items but it wasn't such a horrible chore. I actually did a bulk pureeing process similar to this when I made our daughter's baby food.
TIP: To cut down on chopping prep time, use frozen veggies. They go much quicker. So I've already thrown some purees into a couple of our family favorite recipes and noone has been the wiser. My husband is happy I am making us healthier and I can tell him what is in it, but I'll hold off on the little one. She can continue to think what she sees is what she's eating. ;) HIGHLY recommend it! Can't wait to try the brownie recipe. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-31 06:46:51 EST)

I have been pleasantly surprised with this book. I have a two year-old and a 6 month-old. I already make puree's for baby food so it hasn't been too bad, making a little more. I have to add that my two year-old likes vegetables, BUT my husband hates them! Now, we can all sit down to dinner and eat the same things and enjoy them. We really like the tuna salad, meatloaf, and green eggs recipes.

My friend and I both bought copies of this. Neither one of us has kids but we saw the author on Oprah and thought that the receipes looked good and the concept of getting more veggies by incorporating purees into food was cool. So I bought a food processor and steamer and got started. I really love this book and the recipes are great. Not sure why other people have not been so thrilled except that it is very time consuming to prep the purees. Just plan a night or day and take care of making purees that you put into your freezer. Then you can have a month's worth of veggies waiting for your recipes. It's a fun and novel way to prepare food. I plan on using the concept when I have children of my own as you honestly don't even notice the veggies inside traditional favorites like maccaroni and cheese.

The Sneaky Chef: Simple Strategies for Hiding Healthy Foods in Kids' Favorite Meals
I have to say it is an interesting idea for hiding veggies if your children don't like the sight of them, but it wasn't Jessica Seinfeld's to begin with. There was a similar book written a few years ago called "Sneaky Chef" which basically used the same strategy. I have to say that the best way to benefit from any nutrients in veg is to eat everything raw, if not raw always undercooked. Once vegetables have been cooked, frozen and then heated up in a microwave, the nutrients/vitamins are dead. This is why frozen broccoli is of no use, unless you just love the taste. So, if your main purpose is to give your children the vitamins and nutrients they need to fight off cancer or basically to grow, it is a better idea to feed them fresh fruit and veg daily. I don't know why moms complain that their children don't like veggies, if you had started their lives off with feeding them healthy foods, they wouldn't know any different. They only know what you tell them after all! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-28 06:13:33 EST)

ONE IMPORTANT THING THAT MOST PEOPLE DON'T KNOW IS THAT WHEN YOU PUREE A FRUIT OR VEGETABLE INTO A CONCENTRATED FORM, YOU DRASTICALLY INCREASE ITS SUGAR CONTENT.
SO BOTTOM LINE IS IT'S STILL BETTER TO EAT FRESH STEAMED OR RAW VEGGIES, AND FRESH FRUIT. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-28 06:13:33 EST)

For those of us who what how we were designed to eat, the recipes in Deceptively are a little too processed and artificial, but they weren't awful like a lot of the reviewers are claiming. You have to remember that if you're used to eating trash, good food isn't going to taste so good right off the bat. The problem that this book is trying to combat isn't going to go away with some sneaky recipes though, unfortunately- the problem of childhood obesity is too big (no pun intended)

This is of course a cook book and like any other it gives you some new ideas of how to disguise food so your family will eat it. Cook books are to be read and see if something jumps out at you. It has new ideas for old recipes or a new food to try, but you have to remember that not all recipes are equal. Just like family members don't eat the same things and like it. You can't expect everything to work for you and your kids... so you try it and if it works you keep it and if not you toss it. Like many things in life this may work for you or may not, but the only one who can decide is you.

It is ok, some recipes are good, and I tried other ones that are not very tasty, but it is good to get ideas and incorporate in your own recipes.

Who is this lady anyway? Jerry Seinfeld's wife? Does she have any credibility as a cook or nutrition expert? Since other people who have reviewed the book have explained why it is bad, I will just agree. Diguising veggies in brownies is no way to make healthy eating habits, the recipes sound gross (I didn't make any of them once I realized what was required). Also, it is time consuming and very expensive to add pureed fruits and vegetables at every meal. Jessica Sienfeld has probably not heard that times are tough for the rest of us and extra, expensive ingredients are not the current fashion.

I haven't actually purchased this yet, I just got it from our library. I am really liking it so far. My daughter is 13 months and it's hard to get her to eat veggies. I put pureed butternut squash or sweet potato in her mac and cheese every time I make it and she gobbles it up. I have made the french toast recipe and the chicken nuggets with sweet potato puree. Both were very good..I made them for my husband and I. I like using the flaxseed meal and panko crumbs.
Overall, I think it's a great idea as long as you do what she says and continue to offer other vegetables on the side. I plan on buying the book soon. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-20 03:24:26 EST)

I made the brownies that are hyped as delicious to adults too. I made them for a friend and her kids and they liked them O.K., but I thought they were awful. I tried making them again for my own kid, who eats everything and she liked them O.K., never having had a real brownie. The consistency is awful. I like the concept of adding veggies to food for kids who won't eat them otherwise since there are so many kids who don't, but food is wonderful, joyful, celebratory and it should be delicious. As a recipe book, it isn't so great.

I got this as kind of a joke. I am a dad and the primary cook in our house. I have tried to get not only my kids, but my wife, to eat more vegetables. This book does not work in our house. First off, most of the food isn't very good. If your home-made Mac 'N Cheese does not taste like the blue box you are never going to win. Adding hidden vegetables to it is not going to get you there. Teach your kids to eat right and portion the food correctly. Give them fresh vegetables instead of canned and learn to cook and season them in new ways to keep things interesting.
