The absolutely best, most comprehensive reference for the serious fly tyer. It teaches you ALL the components of the artificial fly and 10 ways to tie each variation. No fly tyer should be without this incredible guide. Ted is the best in the business of writing about fly tying, fly fishing, equipment, etc... A consummate professional.

This is by far worth the money you pay for it. This book is mistitled however it should be the fly tier's bible. An absolute must for ANY fly tier rather they're new to the scene or been at for 50 years.

A must book for any fly tier. If you buy a book on fly tying this should be the one. Outstanding quality, and at Anazon price is a great buy.

Is a good reference for tying techniques.
I would have preferred if I could find the entire dressings and not only the hundred plus one techniques to tie wings or whatever but probably it would have become too big.
To be improved in CDC use.

Excellent description of common tying techniques; easy to understand - even for beginners. Important, it's not a book for tying complete flies - it explains the techniques and materials => You need a second book!

Schollmeyer & Leeson have done it; and done it superbly! They have put the most complete fly tying technique book at an easily understandable level. Wisely divided into parts of the fly, this encyclopedic work leaves nothing untaught. Brilliant photographs that clarify the 'tricky' skills are coupled with elegant description and preventive cautions of lurking pitfalls. Experienced tyers will use it as a reference. Active learners will save dozens hours of frustration. Instructors will stand this book up as a step-by-step guide on 'how-to' for every skill in fly tying. - Gary Eaton, CCI

If you only want to buy just 1 fly tying book, this is it. With this book I can reference all the techniques for building flies. Then by looking at actual flies available, I can figure out how to go about tying them. This book contains many simple to advanced tying techniques. It does not show completed flies but rather various tying techniques such as how to build dubbed bodies, cheniled bodies or uses of plastic, latex or vinyl to build bodies. If you want a step by step procedure of how to build and complete a fly such as a nymph then this is not the book to get. But if you want to know the different techniques which you could tie to achieve a nymph then get this book. This is a useful book for beginners to advanced tyers. Worth every cent.

A must have reference for anyone seriously interested in all aspects of Fly Tying. Even though I consider myself a reasonably adequate tier, this book will provide many answers. Knowledge never comes cheap but this reference sure helps bridge the gap.

I have been tying for 35 years and have read a lot of books, taken a lot of classes, taught classes, and tied profesionaly. Of all the books I have read and all the classes I have taken this book has more information that is easy to find and understand than all of them.

What an incredible achievement this book is! It is way beyond my abilities as a tyer. However, the comprehensive and beautifully photographed discussions of far more tying techniques than I ever knew existed is a real inspiration to expand my horizons. This book will be a classic used by generations of fly tyers.

Well, it's difficult to fault this book, because it does what (I assume) it set out to do exceedingly well - that is, be a reference of *techniques*. The worst you could say about this book is that it's not for everyone. For example, it's not something I'd recommend to a beginner. It doesn't show how to tie even one complete fly. A beginner would be in over his head trying to tie a fly from this book. It's all glossy, and there are thousands of photos, which is good, but this is not really a "coffee table" book either. It's dense and *technical* - looks like a glossy college textbook of some sort!

But man, what a reference! It's the only book of its kind as far as I know. There is a LOT in here. They seem to have collected from every significant author and fly design to compile this monster. This book is fantastic for those who like to make up their own flies by tweaking patterns they already know of, or to make completely new patterns. It's also great if you find sketchy or confusing fly recipes - this can provide a new perspective on that technique you're trying to figure out.

You want to add wings? 30 ways to tie in wings. Dubbing? A dozen dubbing techniques. Add lead? A couple dozen ways to weight your fly. (Those numbers are off the top of my head, but you get the idea.) The book's not perfect. I'm not an expert so I can't critique all the techniques, but, for example, the thorax hackling technique credited to Marinaro differs from Marinaro's instructions.

Quibbles aside, if you tie much, and really want to improve your technique, or even improve on published fly patterns you've been tying, you can't beat this book....

I recently recieved this book as a gift and I was delighted. I've heard rave reviews about this book from fellow anglers. Even though this book is expensive, it's worth it. The book consists of step by step photos of tying on different materials for soft hackled flies, streamers, dry flies, bass flies and nymphs patterns. Since I mostly fish for steelhead, I wished the book had tips for tying egg patterns. But, I would recommend every fly angler should have this book on their bench....
