I just received my copy 2 days ago and I haven't been able to stop reading it. This books is intended for someone who wants to understand the concepts of audio from the beginning. The book is very well written and it uses easy language and uncomplicates the complicated. I recommend this book for anyone in the audio business.

This book provides a thorough breakdown of techniques and procedures commonly used in today's recording environments. I haven't fully investigated the contents of the book, but everything I have come across so far has been very good material. Lots of information in here. Used this book for one of my classes in school.

This book is way to "shallow"... It skips from one subject to the next without any detailed insight. Way to much blah, and valuable info very limited. Too much "outdated" stuff, very limited modern info!
Maybe an OK source when you're starting out. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-07 23:55:57 EST)

What can I say?
I found out about this book by going to the website for the Audio Engineers Society and checking what schools taught Audio Engineering. I found a college in my area that offers a degree in Audio Engineering and this was listed as the only text book for their classes. This is going to be a reference for me probably for the rest of my life as I study Audio Engineering. There are a lot of mathematical formulas that I don't understand and I plan to take a physics class in the near future but there seem to be enough pictures in the book that one does not need to fully understand the physics/math/acoustics to get started on recording and mixing. This book is exactly what I ordered, came in perfect condition AND cheaper than the bookstore at school. Can't beat that! I wish all my school textbooks were that easy and inexpensive to acquire.

Modern Recording Techniques was the required textbook for a class on live sound reinforcement that I am taking. I was pleasantly surprised to find out how readable and user friendly it is. The author does a good job in breaking subjects up into bite size (understandable) pieces that fit into the bigger scheme of things. For a textbook this is actually pretty straightforward and useful. If you are looking for a single source of information this is a good book, and the campanion website has added features so that you can hear examples and find out more. I definitely recommend it.

I bought Huber's book on MIDI to be used as the text for a college class. When coupled with Modern Recording Techniques, the MIDI book made much more sense. Takes you from where MIDI left off and puts that knowledge to work. Again, written in a clear and concise manner, no frills, just good working and practical knowledge Buy both both his books.

after reading a few reviews, i was pretty disturbed. although proof reading is very important to writing a book, i would hardly use it to build a strong argument why this book is not any good. I have a copy that is ten years old and is still extremely useful today. That's the beauty of this book. It's a reference book that holds it relevancy to an industry that is so ever changing. i guarantee you that books that try to show you the latest gadgets and opinions will be outdated if not obsolete within 5 years. I think think this book will give you an awesome foundation in sound recording no matter where technology goes. As a producer it's kinda like a switch blade and you never know how far down the road you will use this little "insignificant" tool. It might not answer in detail what you are looking for, but it will surely direct you on the path you need to go. what other sound recording book do you know of will stand the test of time like this one?
gotta respect the wisdom of the old engineers and producers. they ARE the reason why you have the plug-ins that you do for your DAWs. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-09-17 03:29:58 EST)

This is good for beginners, but I must say the choices made in certain areas are quite strange. For example the coice of microphones. It includes some typical, but just as many very strange choices. And some sections that must be characterized as not essential gets more attetion than basics like eq, dynamics and microphone construction. Otherwise a good book.

I had seen so many recommendations on this book, and so few others, but I found on purchasing it here on Amazon that it provided a general overview on sound and recording, but provided little I wasn't at least acquainted with -- and not too much further. I don't think that this broad overview would be of that much use to anybody who already has some background. But I am also 42 years old, and have a pretty extensive knowledge of accoustics, electronics, and music theory.
For younger students I think it would be appropriate. It is the bible as far as recording tech schools go, and if you are considering that as a career, this book is a must-have. Had I come to this book 10 years ago it would have been very helpful. But I agree with another review here; this textbook tries to be all things to all people. It includes material that really isn't necessary, such as tax advice for musicians. Not necessary. (Musicians typically don't make enough to be taxed, and subsequently wind up doing something else.) I would generally disregard bad reviews about typos etc. The typos and inaccuracies don't really detract from the message; it was just written by sound engineers -- and as such, the first draft was probably written on strip bar napkins -- And then they tried to cut costs on the editing. The typos etc. don't bother me nearly as much as the depth of coverage, or rather, the lack of it. But I am looking for far more technology, wiring diagrams, and in-depth theory. This book makes a good start in that direction, but not far enough for me. But me at 30 years old, that would be another story. Most of the info in this book can be found on the web, but this is a pretty huge compendium of relatively fundamental stuff, all in one place. So never mind the B______, here's the manual! Since writing this negative review, I spent a lot of time going through the book in more detail. I will leave my original review because most of the points are appropriate. However, I do see that the book has more value than originally determined. In talking with other engineers, I discovered that the previous version did not have the volume of errors incountered in this version (perhaps in the rush to dump a lot of new material, these problems were introduced). I up my rating to 2.5 stars.
I am surprised by the predominantly high mark reviews for this book. Perhaps the people giving high marks are friends of the author or know so little about recording or science that they don't notice the erroneous information (aka garbage) presented. While the book is accurate in some areas, the problem is that someone who doesn't know the field (ie, the people buying this book to learn the true facts) would not know the difference and be continually mislead. First, poor writing can not be overlooked, with continual grammar rpoblems, mispelled words, omitted words, duplicate words, ect. - this is probably the worst I've seen out of thousands of technical books that I have read. Most modern word processors should have caugth most of the problems - truly hard to believe this is the 6th edition (ie, for a rough draft or perhaps first edition, this would still be considered "bad"). Once past the poor writing, some of the ideas and concepts are okay - but, not evenly presented. This appears to be the author's off the cuff "here's they way it happened for me," approach, rather than attempting to survey the industry and provide solid information. I find it unfortunate this book was discovered as a required textbook for a college recording class - I don't think the professor will make that mistake again. How about a represenative example of problems from Chapter 2: page 52 labels a graph of an exponential function as being "Linear" and labels a graph of a linear function as being "logarithmic". Numerous examples of numerical errors exist (ie, slightly wrong definitions, values in equations presented as equal that arent). I stopped noting the problems after chapter two as virtually every page had some level of questionable material. Good things about the book: The main thing I can say that is good about the book, is that it appears the author spent a lot of time assembling diagrams and charts and was probably trying to present a good book. The format and layout are fine and it could be used to organize a systematic study of the subject. I wish the author had consulted others to review and edit the book for technical validity and grammar. I would rate it a "good" start for a first draft and with solid support (editors, collaborators), it could very well become a reliable resource. Hopefully another edition will not be released until higher quality is introduced to resolve the many problems. In summary, the book contains [some] accurate points and statistically may contain more correct information than false information. BUT, that's not good enough. The reader of this book is expecting the contents to be factual and the book is simply not reliable. The writing style and grammar would probably not receive a passing grade (ie, a D or F) if submitted for freshman level writing project at an accredited university. Perhaps the best value this book would provide, would be to use it in a final exam on recording engineering - the assigment being to find the errors in this book. With so many horribly written books on the market, particularly those pertaining to technology, I am absolutely thrilled with Modern Recording Techniques! As someone with a significant background as both a musician and in technology, I've had almost no experience in audio recording. This book not only clarifies things that have befuddled my feeble mind for many years (smile), but also does an incredibly effective job at explaining concepts that are completely new to me. Examples are well chosen and the few downloadable tutorials provided on the author's web site for this book are, while simple, also very effective.
While I'm still working my way through this book, I can already say that it is going to be one of those that I will continue to use and refer to for a very long time. With that in mind, I would give this book ten stars, if that were possible. Thanks! (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-02-25 01:25:08 EST)

Huber has assembled a synopsis of audio recording, which is great for the uninitiated, but I find that the book, while definitely at home in my music recording library, is not opinionated enough to be more than a starting reference. There is a decided lack of opinion on recording issues that often polarize music recording professionals. By being all things to everyone, this book is simply a starting point, albeit an excellent one, well laid out and with chapters that progress in logical order. If you seek pros and cons on recording techniques, you may find some here, as well as a generalization of what is available.

This book is really a must for everyone who wants to learn more about proaudio. From the beginner to the semi-pro, this book is for you. I wish Amazon had the "expert" one, from the same serie.
