Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea

THE EAGERLY AWAITED COLLECTION OF PERSONAL ESSAYS FROM THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF MY HORIZONTAL LIFE

When Chelsea Handler needs to get a few things off her chest, she appeals to a higher power -- vodka. You would too if you found out that your boyfriend was having an affair with a Peekapoo or if you had to pretend to be honeymooning with your father in order to upgrade to first class. Welcome to Chelsea's world -- a place where absurdity reigns supreme and a quick wit is the best line of defense.

In this hilarious, deliciously skewed collection, Chelsea mines her past for stories about her family, relationships, and career that are at once singular and ridiculous. Whether she's convincing her third-grade class that she has been tapped to play Goldie Hawn's daughter in the sequel to Private Benjamin, deciding to be more egalitarian by dating a redhead, or looking out for a foulmouthed, rum-swilling little person who looks just like her...only smaller, Chelsea has a knack for getting herself into the most outrageous situations. Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea showcases the candor and irresistible turns of phrase that have made her one of the freshest voices in comedy today.

I can't remember when I found a book so funny. I was constantly laughing out loud--filthy, funny, and highly immature--loved every minute. Thanks Chelsea.

I am a big fan of Chelsea Handler. I finished reading this book very quickly because it is so funny! I would actually laugh out loud while reading it in the lunch room at work. I have reccomended this book to many friends. I picked up her first book on a whim in the bookstore in college, read it, and passed it around to at least 10 people... I'd give that one five stars.

I read this book on the beach. I was laughing so hard, and often, that a complete stranger came up to me and asked me if it was a good book. Of course I told her to buy it! It's blunt and hysterical. Great, quick read! There were sections in the book where I was laughing so hard that I was tearing up. Now I have to read Chelsea's first book.

I always loved Chelsea in Girls Behaving Badly...she was, hands down, the funniest person on that show. I saw the rave reviews here and decided to get her book. It was great!
I rarely laugh out loud when reading a book and this book had me laughing out loud at least 5 times, and smiling many many others. She's a bit raunchy, but that doesn't offend me at all. My only criticism was the chapter when her and her friends went to get a massage... I think she probably could have left that out of the book. I didn't find it funny. It wasn't offensive or anything, but it was just sort of a boring chapter compared to the others. Otherwise I liked this book so much I ran out and bought her first book. She is also a surprisingly good writer. highly recommended.

This book was just as good if not better than Chelsea's first book. I absolutely love reading her material and look forward to watching her show all the time! Her humor is often what helps me stomach this crazy life. It's nice to know there are people out there with lives crazier than mine that are actually experiencing success from such absurd experiences. I love Chelsea and hope she continues to write and along the way receives many blessings of increased prosperity, popularity and success. To make others laugh and smile is a gift.

Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. The author is blessed with a cynical humor that had me laughing out loud multiple times throughout the book. The story moves along at a great pace and I highly recommend it as a fun summer read. I just wish her other book, My Horizontal Life, was available on the Kindle. Try this book though, you won't be disappointed. Get ready to laugh!!!

I praise her honesty.

I watch Handler's show from time to time, and I find her to be funny and entertaining, which is why I bought this book. I unfortunately I found it to be neither.

She's all over the place, skipping around, throwing out random scenarios, with nothing to tie them together. And then the book ends just as randomly.

It seemed like she was trying to hard too be funny. The situations should be funny, but the writing is just so poor, and the stories are just plain wierd. They have the feel of not-quite-fiction but not-quite-fact. It's not that I was offended by her humor, or crassness, I just don't think she pulled it off the jokes in this book. Its poorly delivered.

Please keep in mind, I was not looking for fine literature or well-developed prose. I just wanted some cheap laughs. I might have laughed twice.

I am honeslty surprised someone published this book.
Save your money, don't buy it.

It is unfortunate that Ms Handlery does not choose to put her talent to good use. Instead she makes fun of people that does not look exactly like her or act identical to her. During this book she was able to laugh at and humiliate people from Mexico, China, people with red hair, people with pets and various religious beliefs to name a few. A true comedian can be truly funny without putting other people down. Ms Handlery has some serious growing up to do.

Based on the title, which I think is great, I couldn't wait to get this book. I was really looking forward to sitting down for quite a few good laughs. I did not find this book funny in the least. A few chuckles here and there, but that's about it. In order to be truly funny and not lose your reader's respect, you've got to be spot on with everything. If you have a "consul" in your car, you've probably been to an embassy. If you have a "console" in your car, your car is like everyone else's with a dashboard, glove compartment, steering wheel.....it's all in the details.

Chelsea Handler writes in a tone that is dry, deadpan, and hopelessly exaggerated. She has a great eye for the absurd and the ridiculous in all of us, and narrates as such. In this collection of humorist essays, Handler takes normal situations and blows them up into events that are catastrophically unbelievable and believable at the same time - she uses hyperbole both to point out the flaws in our society and to make us laugh at those very flaws. Some of her jokes, however, can be juvenile, like referring to bestiality or midgets (usually in a manner that is gross and, as much as she tries, unfunny). She soars, though, most of the time, especially in the final essay, where she jets to Costa Rica with her corpulent father and their two friends. The author knows a good pop-culture reference, and uses adult language for her childhood persona to highlight how childish the world can seem to a mere child.

Chelsea Handler, a sarcastic and sometimes self-deprecating comedian, endlessly entertaining actress and an unforgiving critic of pop culture nonsense on her a late night talk show `Chelsea Lately', follows her first novel `My Horizontal Life', chronicling her sexploitations, with a new collection of equally endearing and unbelievable memoirs in her new book `Are You There Vodka It's Me Chelsea'. The title plays off of the famously popular teen novel `Are You There God It's Me Margaret' written by Judy Blume, a title perfectly suited for a woman who seeks enlightenment through vodka.

Tales of fabricating Hollywood contract negotiations and devising covert babysitting operations while growing up demonstrate that Handler's vivid imagination, ingenuity and sense of humor were ingrained, although as she explains not genetic. Empathic and drawn to people, Chelsea finds herself in a lip lock with a murderer, test driving a man with hair the color of "Fanta orange soda", pet sitting for a peekachoo lusting after her man's privates, and duped by her midget doppelganger into donating money to a con artist. I won't spoil all the fun, but be warned that reading this literally laugh out loud content in public could have you giggling to yourself, drawing awkward stares from strangers that may have a hard time believing anything could be that funny!

Handler's voice as an author is unforgettably funny. You'll like her because she's the friend you wish you had to order another round of drinks. Her brand of sarcasm and criticism of others is not unlike what we say to ourselves, She humbles her critique by admitting her own shortcomings and lapses in judgment and haven't we all been there. Familiarity with her tone of voice and characteristic mannerisms from her mind numbed eye rolls, exasperated jaw clenched smiles and hearty laughter from watching her show and stand up acts are what bring this book to life. The book's popularity is owed not only to its stellar comedic content but because of the person herself. We can't seem to get enough of Chelsea. So have another Kettle One and enjoy this gem of laughter.

I've watched Chelsea Handler on TV for quite some time as late night fodder that usually puts me to sleep. She's a funny woman with good timing and is nice to look at. Her wit is quick, her delivery sharp. I'm just not all that interested in celebrity gossip, which overwhelms the content.

This book, however, is another story. Presenting as a series of stories from her life, it qualifies as an off-beat memoir with light tales about a young party girl living her life in the spotlight. She's self-deprecating and self-promoting at the same time, and in spite of her crude and irreverent (politically-incorrect) personality, ultimately I was charmed by these stories. The writing is very good, certainly on par with other famous humor writers, including David Sedaris.

I feel like I've come late to the party that is Chelsea Handler, but better late than never. This collection of stories is in a word, hilarious. Chelsea is a natural storyteller and these pages go by so quickly I found myself looking for more when I reached page 264. She's original, irreverent, bawdy, gutsy and VERY funny.

It's hard to pick a favorite, but the story of boyfriend Mohammad and the Peekapoo (apparently a gay dog), and another that included a night with the drunken "midget" named Kimmy, had me laughing out loud and sharing snippets. There are no stinkers in the collection, each is funnier than the previous as you get to know her humor and her quirks, which yes--DO include a lot of vodka.

If you like the work of Laurie Notaro The Idiot Girls' Action-Adventure Club: True Tales from a Magnificent and Clumsy Life or Sandra Tsing Loh A Year in Van Nuys you'll love the work of Chelsea Handler.

Though as candid and brilliantly inappropriate as her first collection of essays, 'Vodka' reaches past points of 'horizontal life' to focus more on love, family, and friendship. The end product is a rather remarkable collection of stories that are astoundinly funny, yet surprisingly heartfelt. Handler writes with a sincerity that cushions her bluntness. Wheather reading about being kicked half naked out of a London restauraunt, love scorn Peekapoos, or being dry-humped by an angry asian masseause, its certain you'll be in for laughs the whole way through. By the end of the collection, you'll realize the situations are only half the story. The real story is who is by your side to share them with.

I recently purchased this book on audio (unabridged and it was read by the author) for a long car ride. Wow! Once you get past her dry tone, my husband and I were laughing our butts off. She continually refers to her father as "Bitch Tits" which is a funny visual to keep in your brain while following the stories involving her dad. Of particular humor here was her retelling of her first DUI and going to county lockup... THAT was so hysterical! I think the book would be just as funny, but it was an added bonus to hear her do the storytelling.

I bought it at the airport to read on my one week vacation, and finished in on the flight. Fast-paced, and a real laugh out loud kinda book. You won't be disappointed!
