| Chevrolet by the Numbers: The Essential Chevrolet Parts Reference 1965-1969 (Chevrolet by the Numbers) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

"Chevrolet by the Numbers" is the only authoritative reference for identifying and verifying the correct Chevrolet parts, by casting number, for your exact model.
-Restoring your Chevrolet to original factory specifications? You'll find the casting numbers that correspond to your car's Vehicle Identification Number. With this correct information you will avoid buying - and being sold - the wrong parts. -Buying a Chevrolet that has been restored? These numbers will help you determine whether or not the car has been authentically restored, and whether it's a smart investment. -Searching for factory high-performance parts at swap meets? "Chevrolet by the Numbers" tells you which parts to look for, why they are special, and which engines those parts came with. Other books rely on secondhand information or out-of-date part numbers. Author Alan Colvin documented every casting number for every Chevrolet V-8 engine and drivetrain part from 1955 through 1975, using original source material in Chevrolet's archives, including engineering blueprints, technical service bulletins, and build sheets. He interviewed the original manufacturers and engineers and brings you fascinating stories of parts development from behind the factory gates. Most of this information has never before been seen in public. This book covers all 1965-1969 passenger cars, including: Camaro, Corvette, Chevy II/Nova, Chevelle, Impala, Bel Air, and El Camino. Engines covered include the 283, 302, 327, 350, 396, 409, 427. If you absolutely want to know the original parts for your Chevrolet - not what interchanges or fits, but the correct part that came with your car when it was assembled - "Chevrolet by the Numbers" has the answer. |

For years I wondered how there were so many "Matching Numbers" cars with, say, factory tach, 4 speed, etc. available today at large bucks. With the help of this guide, one can assemble or restore the car of their dreams just as if one had special ordered it from the factory in 1964. Of course the purist would say that to take a '64 Impala SS that was originally 250 horse automatic and convert that to a 300 horse, 4 speed, factory tach etc. was counterfeiting even though all the parts have the right casting number, date codes, etc. Well, we can't make that call because opinions run rampant among auto enthusiasts.
Whatever your goal, this book will help you achieve it. Whether validating the authenticity of a barnyard find or assembling the car of your dreams, Alan L. Colvin provides the information to answer your questions. It is presented in a clear, concise maner and organized for easy reference while browsing swap meets and surfing eBay. My only regret is that I didn't have a copy of it sooner! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-30 01:56:36 EST)

If you are going to restore any Chevy or Chevy engine in this time period, you will not find a more conclusive set of working drawings, factual insight or list of part numbers anywhere! I bought the book for the information of the different Chevy engines. With the wealth of information available I might just get myself a Chevy to restore!

Take the time and read through this book and it will give you years of knowledge. The book will also educate you as to the correctness of the Chevrolet you either have, or are looking at. It also will help verify myths with acctual facts and documentation as tho the true nature of the cars and their history.

By using this book, I figured out what year and model the block, heads and assembly date were for the motor in my 1956 Chevy Nomad. I new nothing about the motor. I now know what I have.

Chevrolet by the numbers is currently THE book for looking up Chevrolet casting numbers. Colvin includes information on just about any crankshaft, block, head, intake, carb, exhaust manifold, water pump, distributor, camshaft, rear axle. Small block as well as W-motor and big block is covered. Four volumes cover 1955-1975.
Applications and some illustrations are provided. You will see some specific engineering illustrations for some unique blocks, intakes, cylinder heads and etc. Many photos are also included. Besides the casting numbers, Colvin breaks down casting and manufacturing dates. One area where this book really shines is the section covering carbs. Every Holley, Carter, and Rochester used is listed. For instance, you will be able to look up exactly which Rochester 2bbl was used on a 1967 283 with auto trans, air conditioning, and Federal emissions, -vs- the carb used on a 283 auto without air, or a 283 with a stick and A/C, or a 283 with an automatic trans, A/C, and California emissions. To put it another way, if you want to know which of at least 6 different two barrel carbs was installed on your 1967 283, this is probably the only way to get that information. The section covering the Quadrajets, Carters, and Holley carbs is just as good. This is a wonderful book for your auto library. I have seen some, but not many errors. If you go to swap meets, or shop on ebay, this book will save you the purchase price many times over. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-14 05:07:00 EST)

I work in a full line GM dealership and we have a copy of this and it's worn out from using as help to find parts and to see who's got what for sale when all they can tell you is a casting or part number. This guy did tons of homework on this book BEFORE he printed one.

Being the only restoration guide based on materials from the Chevrolet archives, it is one of the most essential parts identification references available. Information and original part numbers on nearly everything from the wheels to the water pump are explained via well-written text, schematic diagrams, and photographs in 17 chapters (over 300 pages). Vehicle identification and firewall tags are also covered. Engine codes for six engine sizes are thoroughly covered, including the rare 262ci. There are only three complaints concerning the book: the photographs are all black and white, some of the diagrams are rather difficult to read, and paint codes are not covered when the ID codes are explained. However, this restoration guide is a must-have for the serious classic Chevrolet collector.
