I have the factory service manual for my bike and I still refer to this book because it explains things so well. I bought this book used for a fraction of the retail price and it looks almost brand new!

Woodring and Love offer a great resource for the novice or apprentice Harley wrench. Kind of like an appetizer plate: it has a little of everything but you don't get a full serving of anything. If one intends to really learn how to build a performance Harley this book is a great intro. However, such a student should consider this an overview, not a comprehensive treatise on the finer points of engine building. This book is definitely worth its price as a primer for more scholarly reads. Taken as such it is a great value.

I was hoping for a book that would have some neat ideas on making my Harley zippier. Of the 101 projects, stuff like changing the oil and adjusting the clutch just don't do it for me. But then I have taken Harleys apart and put them back together. The factory manual is your first must have book.

If you can only afford one Harley Book, buy this one. It's the best of it's kind I've yet seen. Just one of the projects is worth the price. It' clear and well written with color pictures that are worth an additional thousand words. Reading this book will get you all fired up to spend some bucks and dig into that machine, so it's fun for the arm-chair mechanics, too. After a few projects you will feel comfortable with the mechanical challenges that a Harley can throw at you. If you do several, you will have a stong, well tended bike. It can save you a bundle if you want to hot-rod that EVO and you get bragging rights along with projects. I can't think of a better way to use twenty bucks.

This is not a coffee table book, it is a better than average tech manual. If you are looking for a Harley novel read "The Second Coming Of Age" by: C. Vedrine

As an intermediate level "hacker" when it comes to repairs, I had always been more comfortable having the local dealer take care of routine maintenance. Prior to receiving this book I was only changing the oil and transmission fluid on my bike. However, "armed" with this new found information I now cover the bike from front to end! The layout and excellent photographs are easy for even ME to understand!! There is not a lot of industry jargon involved, making it simple for the "mechanically handicapped" to understand. My only complaint is that the book is not longer and I am impatiently awaiting "Volume II."

This book is a must for all novice motorcycle repairman. Iteach harley-davidson repair for the U.A.W. and use this book. Thisbook is not only good for harley's, it will work well for all motorcycles. The book is easy to understand for everyone. The tips on things like using a ball point pen to bleed brake lines, is priceless. The only drawback to the book is, it's not longer! Love IT!

This is the one book to buy if you want to start spinning wrenches on your Evo Harley. The book is very up-to date--even recommending using a Twin Cam oil filter for Softails for screening out finer particles. The section on de-federalizing your CV carb is worth the price of the book alone; as is the advice for a "five-quart" oil change. The book is very easily understood with its color photographs on every single page. I only wish there were more of them, since some of the projects could use greater specifc detail.

Excellent book on maintaining your Harley. I've owned Harleys for ten years and have done my own work; but I thought I knew it all. The book has glossy pages and clear color photos. It's hard to believe the cost of the book in material to print is less than 20 bucks. I didn't give a 5-star because coverage of advanced topics such as a cam change is an overview. There's more to changing a cam than what's presented in the book or the service manual. Also, there is a handy reference table of all sorts of data. The book covers design changes of the Evolution engine which I found very interesting. So if you have a older Evo bike you might want to start there.

Other manuals on Harley's have been disappointing. But this one is very well done. Color photos are great. This book not only explains what to do to get more performance out of your Evo motor, but what the results will be. Very well done!

Most of the people I ride with have "Shovelheads", and don't know about the Evo's. This book gives you step by step instructions for many everyday maintenance procedures. I don't "turn a wrench" for a living, but with this book I can do most of the work on my Road King at home, and not have to pay $75.00 an hour labor costs!!! Thanks Mr. Woodring for finally giving us back yard mechanics a well illustrated, and simple instruction manuel.

Kip Woodring's 101 Performance Projects is an easy to read manual for any Big Twin owner who wants to take an active role in his HOG's performance. The reference guide in the back is a big plus, with real numbers and people to answer real questions. I highly recommend this book to any owner who wants to be proactive with the inner workings of their bike.

I was impressed with the detailed compilation of tools suggested to have in your garage but more specifically that they are individually detailed for each project.
I was also impressed with the evaluation of each project in terms of time and cost along with the sidebars explaining alternatives to consider while you are in the middle of a particular project. It even includes dyno tests results comparing various similar products, and much more... I wish this book was on the market two years ago before I paid to have done on my bike much of what's described within its covers. Now I realize I could have done most of work myself. Just performing ONE project will save you more in professional labor costs than you'll pay for this book. If you own a scoot with an EVO engine and you like to tinker, this book must be added to your garage library. This book is definitely a five-star publication when used along side the manufacturer's service manual. I rated it four-stars because it didn't always detail step-by-step instructions for each project. The author apparently left those steps for the reader to find in the service manuals. -rne- (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-04 05:12:59 EST)
