I absolutely adore this book. The pictures are so beautiful and layed out perfectly. The book also provides the history of Tutankhamun and other pharaohs of the golden age. I highly recommend this book for those that are not able to attend the exhibition.

I bought the book before seeing the tour in Philly. The book is very well done, and very good representation of the tour. Beautiful photographs, plus good rich text around the history of the 18th dynasty.
Other reviews talk about the tour, which isn't really what the book is about. The tour was rather crowded, and I was somewhat disappointed that all the objects were small, and no Tut sarcophagus. Very little explanation of the layout, so my son was complaining about the lack of Tut objects; they included many from the 18th dynasty. I recommend the official DVD, its great; bought it at the show. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-22 06:36:29 EST)

Purchased in anticipation of the opening of the exhibition in London in November, the book is a mine of information. Not only does Zahi Hawass describe the objects on display, but he places them in context and gives a vivid picture of life in Egypt at the time of Tutankhamun and before his accession to the throne. Not only a great read, a reference for future use and up to Dr Hawass usual enthusiastic and vivid style. A must-have book for anyone interested in Egypt.

First and formost DO NOT miss the King Tut tour.....the artifatcs are absoutely astounding and incredibly beautiful beyond words..It it truly extremely hard to wrap your mind around that every peice is wll over 3000 yers old. As for the book itself it is nithing short of amazing...caputring the exibit almost in its entirety....but NOTHING compares to seeing the absoultly stunnig tour live...a truly once in a life time experience...after the US tour concludes it it will never leave Cairo again...The book is worth its weight in gold...the awsome photography and articles by renowned archiloghits and her HRH the Queen of Egypt her self...THis tour the book by National Geographic and the Official DVD are some of the greatest gifts ever bestowed opon the world. A gift from the heart of Egypt to the world that will never be go on tour again...A humbling experience live and most interesting reading a msater work indeed...Bravo!!!

I just went to see the exhibit in Philadelphia, and it was great, but just like others have said...there was no death mask or the sarcophagus. I felt a bit jipped, only b/c the way that the exhibit is set up, they are building you up to see something extraordinary at the end, but nothing. All you get is the exhibit store. And this book costs $50 in the store, so its totally worth it here on Amazon!!!!

I dragged my husband to Chicago to see the exhibit at the Field Museum last July and I have to say for the price we paid I was a little disappointed. We weren't able to take any pictures of anything at all and there were so many people in the rooms at one time it was hard to get a good look at anything. Then when we got to the gift shop at the end of the exhibit this book was a ginormous $50!
After paying what we did to get into the exhibit itself, I just couldn't justify paying that much for the book. Needless to say, when I discovered it on Amazon for half that price I was ecstatic!! It is a wonderful book. Beautiful pictures as only National Geographic can give and it is very easy to read and informative. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-11 06:29:28 EST)

The book describes the Exhibit and the artifacts displayed. The photography and maps in the book are top-notch.
I agree with the other reviwer who mentioned the absence of the death mask and any of the Sarcophagi in the Exhibit. It should be clearly mentioned in the advertising that these artifacts are not part of the exhibition. I spent $40 to visit the exhibition and I would not recommend the exihibition to anyone else. This book is less expensive than seeing the real exhibit in Chicago's Field Museum, which does not even have the death mask or any of the multiple sarcaphagus's!!!! And it misleadingly advertises as having such. Like going to see the Rolling Stones and not playing "Satisfaction"

King Tut died around 1350 BC. and theories on the cause of death range from a hunting accident to murder. X-rays revealed signs of a blow to the back of his head, however. After his tomb was found in 1922, his death mask and golden coffin became among the most famous Egyptian artifacts in the world. The teenage king of ancient Egypt is best-known by his golden death mask. But a fiberglass reconstruction of Tutankhamen based on computer models generated X-rays in 1969 of his mummified corpse bear little resemblance to the golden funeral mask found in the pharaoh's tomb. But Tut's mummified head was too dried and sunken to give life-like dimensions for the reconstruction team said National Geographic.
Gorgeous new photos show that unlike the famous bust of a slight, heavy-lipped teenager framed in a pharaoh's headdress, Tut was a wide-faced young man with high cheekbones, smaller eyes and a heavy brow. National Geographic's special effects artists used digital technology and forensic techniques to come up with the new likeness of the boy king. National Geographic's scientists also concluded the X-rays showed Tut probably suffered from a spinal disorder that fused together vertebrae in his neck, causing him to walk with a cane. This book is a marvelous analysis of the life and times of Tutankhamen, presented by no better an authority than National Geographic. This book is a beautifully exhibited guide to the boy king. Gorgeous full-color photographs captures brilliantly the world renowned exhibit. Zahi Hawass brings it all to life with fascinating detail. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-02-14 05:50:03 EST)

Tutankhamen makes the Crown Jewels look like costume jewelry. I saw the exhibit in Fort Lauderdale, and it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Everywhere you look there's another 3500-year-old masterpiece crusted with gold and jewels, and Tut was just one of many Pharaohs - they all received this kind of treatment.
This book is the official exhibition catalog, and a very nicely-done catalog at that. It is more like one of those slick coffee-table books with big color prints on every other page than most museum catalogs I have seen. Since they don't allow picture-taking in the exhibition, the only way to bring some memories home with you is to buy the catalog at the typical over-priced museum bookstore price. My recommendation... I bought a copy right here on Amazon for less than the cost of a couple rolls of film and developing costs; plus the pictures in the book are way better than I could have hoped for if I tried to shoot through the display cases at the exhibit. So, I'm pretty happy w/ the book. Overall, I give the exhibit and the people who made this possible my highest rating - a double-thumbs-up-gold-and-jewel-encrusted-five-stars!!! Oh, and may thy Ka live forever! (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-02-14 05:50:03 EST)

This book is beautifully presented (check out the binding under the dust cover) with glorious photographs throughout. The text is clear, extremely informative and easily understood. The book is packed with information about the items which are on Exhibition sponsored by National Geographic. I love Egyptian art and design and was not disappointed with this book. Young Tut's facial appearance has been recreated by modern technology and there are photographs of a now latex Golden Boy on the dust cover and also inside. It quite took me aback. He looks remarkably like Boy George of Culture Club fame, as was, and if you don't believe me, check it out!

This book is a wonderful preview of the exhibition that is touring the United States. I read it before I went to see the actual artifacts and found that my enjoyment of the exhibition was greatly enhanced. The picture are wonderful and the description very well done. The same book is available at the exhibition at a much greater price.

Information was pretty good and the photos were clear. I wanted the book to go with the museum tour of King Tut. The book filled in many blanks and it was nice to see the artifacts again. The book at the museum was $50 and it was much cheaper online. The only difference was the museum book included a dvd which I could do without, especially for the difference in price.

We saw the exhibition in Ft. Launderdale. What a wonderful companion with cherished memories from an exhibition that was a once in a lifetime experience for my family. The book guides you through the history of Tutankhamum to the present day find of his tomb. If you are not fortunate to see the exhibition, this is the book for you.

This is a beautiful book and excellent catalog of the items in the King Tut exhibit. I recently saw the exhibit at the Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Art and the book was $49. If you are going to one of the later dates, be sure to buy the book online rather than in the gift shop.

I admit, King Tut has been done to death. So many books out there exist soley about him and the discovery of his tomb. Even me, being a passionate afficianado of Egyptology, have to admit that when I recieved this book, I though it would be just another book on King Tut.
But it isn't. This book is a marvelous analysis of the life and times of Tutankhamun, the heretic Akhenaten, and the tumultous Amarna period, which has fascinated and astounded historians for centuries. This book is a beautiful exhibition guide to an unearthly exhibit. If you have seen the exhibit, it's a perfect way to relive the wonderful experience again and again. If you have not, the book, with its earthy, gorgeous, full color photograhps, captures the feel of the exhibit spectacularly. With hundreds of gorgeous and new photos by Kenneth Garret, and clear, concise, and fascinating text by the brilliant Zahi Hawass, this book is another triumph by National Geographic. This book is an exquisitely done companion book to the exhibit. Every piece from the exhibit is highlighted in the book, with an appropriate discription and background. If you enjoy Ancient Egypt, get this book, whether you have the chance to see the exhibit or not. It's a great companion to the exhibit if you can see it, but a great substitute if you can't.

This magnificant book is the companion book to go with the Tutankhamun exhibition that is currently touring the United States. It features the magnificant photography for which National Geographic is famous complete with a narative written by Zahi Hawass, the secretary general of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities and director of the Giza and Saqqara Pyramids. In the descriptions, he talks about the life of the boy king, the state of Egypt at the time, the religion and much more. Each piece of the exhibit is discussed as to what it is, what significance it has, and where it was found.
Perhaps most striking is the reconstructed image of Tutankhamun. It was made by a special CT scanner that obtained images from inside the mummy's wrappings without damaging them. This created the first three-dimensional picture of Tutankhamun. The exhibit will show in LA, June 16 to November 15, 2005, Ft. Lauderdale from December 15 to April 23, 2006, Chicago May 26 to January 1, 2007, and in Philadelphia February 3 to September 30, 2007. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-07 15:26:49 EST)

Over the next two years, the artifacts found in the Egyptian tomb of King Tutankhamun will be on display at the musuems in Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale, Chicago and Phildelphia. This expensive coffee-table book is the "Offical Companion" to the exhibition.
Every other page is an illustration, a photograph of an artifact or a map which is accompany by a descriptive text on the opposing page. Beautifully laid out, the first section of the book is the history and background of King Tut followed by a longer section on every single artifact on display. As it was in its first tour in the late 1970's (with new objects added), this exhibtion is a museum blockbuster -- the LA site will be open 24/7 hours during its final two months of its stay to compensate for the heavy demand for tickets. For any reader interested in the history of ancient Egypt or plan on viewing this once-in-a-lifetime show, this book is a must buy, preferably before seeing the exhibition.
