This update is so important, because if there was ever a version of Photoshop that was aimed at digital photographers, Photoshop CS is it, and "The Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers" by Scott Kelby (Editor of Photoshop User magazine) once again breaks new ground by doing something for digital photographers that's never been done before--it cuts through the bull and shows you exactly "how to do it." It's not a bunch of theory; it doesn't challenge you to come up with your own settings or figure it out on your own. Instead, it shows you step by step the exact techniques used by today's cutting-edge digital photographers and retouchers, and it does something that virtually no other Photoshop book has ever done -- it tells you, flat-out, which settings to use, when to use them, and why. If you're looking for one of those "tell-me-everything-about-the-Unsharp-Mask-filter" books, this isn't it. You can grab any other Photoshop book on the shelf, because they all do that. Instead, this book gives you the inside tips and tricks of the trade that today's leading pros use to correct, edit, sharpen, retouch, and present their photos to some of the most demanding clients on the planet. You'll be absolutely amazed at how easy and effective they are--once you know the secrets. LEARN HOW THE PROS DO IT Each year Scott trains thousands of professional photographers how to use Photoshop, and almost without exception they have the same questions and the same problems -- that's exactly what Scott covers in this book. You'll learn:

If you love photography and love to present a flattering or stunning photo to your friends and family, this is the book for you. I love working in Adobe CS and I have worked in it for a few years. Still, this book brought out a lot of quick, easy and perfectly workable tips for perfecting your digital photographs.
I actually had checked it out from the library and determined I had to buy a copy. Teaches you how to properly set your colors for photo print or publication depending on the paper you will use. Shows you how to gently remove wrinkles, blemishes, love handles and correct smiles. It also shows you how to add artistic flare to your photos. Very easy to follow. Quick and to the point. This book, like many photoshop books, is just the same thing over and over. How to retouch photos, how to use layers to change the intensity of an image. It's a good book if it is your first photoshop book and you're looking to learn the basics, but it is nothing beyond basic.

I got this b/c I am still pretty new to photoshop and it's a tough program to get a handle on b/c of the terminology. This booked helped me get thru the basics and even had a few advanced tips. It's easy to read and very well written (Kelby is pretty funny!) I would reccomend this to anyone just starting out in photoshop.

For years I just took pictures because I loved it. Now I am trying my hand at learning what you can do with those great photos you take. Photoshop is great software if you know how to use it...this book shows you how to use a lot of the tools, and add special effects that you never knew "you" could do. It is the best Photoshop book I have ever found. I also own Photoshop for Dummies and this book is easier to understand and use than the "Dummies" book.

This book is written to address directly the kinds of procedures that photographers want to know about Photoshop. Instead of looking at Photoshop from a programmer's perspective (i.e. here are all of the cool things the crop tool can do) Kelby approaches Photoshop from the other side, in a humorous and simple style that starts with what the PHOTOGRAPHER wants to do and then tells you which tools to use and how. If you are looking for a manual that lets you quickly and simply do what you want, get this. By the way, many of the techniques will work with Photoshop Elements. In other words, for under a hundred bucks you can buy this book and Photoshop Elements and do some fantastic things to your photographs. Great book!

I recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn how to handle common tasks within Photoshop. The book targets the novice user who has not yet mastered Photoshop. Scott Kelby takes a light-hearted approach to many of the common tasks and every step is illustrated with colorful screen shots. The text avoids technical jargon and is written in conversational language. The price is right and it is well worth the purchase. Do not purchase this book if you want to gain a mastery over PS and want to know the intricities of the application.

I am new to Photoshop but this book was not at all intimidating to me. It marks all of the harder techniques with a "for pros only" logo so you know that they are likely to be more challenging. The book is organized in a very logical order and gives very detailed step-by-step instructions on how to accomplish each task. I am a bit lazy when it comes to editing each of my photos in Photoshop, but I know if I did I would end up with much better end results. If you want the most out of your pictures and don't mind spending the time editing after the shot is taken, I highly recommend reading this book. I mainly use it for a reference right now to fix or enhance individual shots rather than using it all the time, but it never leaves my computer desk.

This is the second book I bought while learning to use my Photoshop CS and it was so much better than the first one I'm kicking myself for not buying it sooner. It explains things in easy terms and really got me excited about what I could do with this program. Plus Scott Kelby is hilarious! He combined humor with expertise to creat the ultimate photoshop book. I HIGHLY recommend!

Other reviews aptly describe and applaud this book, as do I. I will mention the Scott Kelby may be a Mac user. PC users will find detailed steps not in accord with the PC interface, but only rarely. I repeat, this is rare, but frustrating at first if you don't recognize it. I wrote SK about this a while ago.

This book is the no-nonsense approach to getting what you want out of your digital photographs with Photoshop CE. Of all image software how-to books I have bought over the years, this book is exactly what I have been looking for and never been able to find. This book was given to me (friend sold his digital camera) as I had quit buying these types of books because I never could find what I was looking for.
Every page has images, including before and after pictures for all of the image techniques. Everything discussed in the book gets right to the point and everything is done step by step. I absolutely love this book. If I forget how to do one of the techniques, it only takes a second to look it up. I love the format. Thanks, Mr. Scott Kelby. I have the previous version of the same book written for Photoshop 7, this book is the extended version written for Photoshop CS users. I enjoy the advance techniques for the professionals, this book gives some good hints for the problems that artists face every day such as sharpening techniques, digital effects an many other light darkroom tecniques are very easy to follow. I recommend this to every level of Photoshop users, very handy book to have in your library.

I am a digital scrapbook artist - just starting out. This is an AMAZING guide to the world of Photoshop. Very well written - concise, yet easy to follow. I have improved my grasp of Photoshop 100% in a couple of weeks. I am still far from an expert, but I am able to work - create great art and continue to use this book with each project.

This is one of my favorite Photoshop books. It must be, because I have 2 editions, both dog-eared and with broken bindings. Needless to say, I use this one a lot.
What I like about this book: 1) It's written for us, for photographers. Not graphic designers. 2) Kelby writes in a witty style that makes reading the book fun. It's not a book that you'll read on a rainy night for pleasure, but it's not dry and boring, either. 3) Kelby gives you settings when he tells you how to do something. For example, under the section 'Removing Dark Circles Under Eyes', Kelby says: "Step One: Open the photo that has the dark circles you want to lessen. Select the Clone Stamp tool in the Toolbox. Then (from the Brush Picker in the Options bar), choose a soft-edged brush that half as wide as the area you want to repair. Step Two: Go up to the Options bar and lower the Opacity of the Clone Stamp tool to 50%. Then, change the Blend Mode to Lighten (so you'll only affect areas that are darker than your sample)." You get the idea. This is a book that you'll actually USE. 4) Kelby starts the book off telling you how to customize Photoshop. And one of the very best discussions that you'll read on why you don't want to shoot in sRGB mode. 5) There is an entire section on Retouching Portraits, with such chapter headings as 'Pro Wrinkle Removal', 'Glamour Skin Softening', and even 'Transforming a Frown into a Smile'. Guarantee that no matter what your level of Photoshop skills, you'll learn something from this book that you'll use every day. There are editions of this book for PS 7, PS CS and PS Elements. A book about photoshop that gives solutions to people (like me) that all they want is to retouch and improve their digital photos. Simple instructions give enormous results. Also i like the way of the writer, not boring at all. I am very very happy with the book because i can get results from the first minutes of reading:)

If you're new to Photoshop and looking for a book to really get you going then I would recommend that this is one of your first purchases. (How to Wow Photoshop for Photographers by Wilmore and Davis is also a great book but I like both). Unlike other Photoshop books which go into great details explaining things before you actually get to to do anything, Kelby puts everything down in simple straight forward steps that are quick and simple to achieve. Remove red-eye, reduce noise, remove colour casts, convert to black and white, diffuse glows, porcelain skin, what values to use for sharpening, it's all here and you can do it in a matter of minutes.
The book begins by getting you set up for optimising Photoshop (workspace, window layouts, colour space, etc) before moving on to basic tool use and then some great effects which you'll use quite frequently. Personally, I find the effects for improving portraits and family pictures the best thing about this book. On the negative side I find the lack of a CD containing all of the photos used in the book a bit of a disappointment. However, please don't let this deter you from considering this worthwhile book. Being able to use the same photos as those contained in the book isn't absolutely necessary to follow along with the steps outlined for a particular effect. Your own photos will be fine. Some people have also expressed displeasure at Kelby's attempted witty writing style. I didn't find this an issue at all. All the end of the day Kelby is telling us what to do to achieve an effect in Photoshop in as simply a manner as possible - no complex explanations. Just what you need to get it done. This book is easy to read, especially with the jokes that help it along. Even though the jokes are cheesy sometimes it feels like a friend is teaching you how to use the program. There's a lot of great shortcuts and tricks that I didn't know about, before reading this book, very glad I bought it.

I've learned an astonishing amount from this book, and I haven't even had a chance to try everything in it. It has step by step instructions complete with illustrations, and makes a complex program easier to use and in ways other books don't mention. And I found the commentary humorous without being excessive.

I have a shelves full of books on photography, photoshop and all subjects that touch on these subjects. This is a book that I pull out again and again. It is easy to follow and I liked the way Scott included a little of his personality with personal humor. ( I am used to DRY DRY DRY!!.. It was kind of nice to actually have a laugh or two while I learned!) I've seen a lot of people claim it, but, this guy REALLY IS A PHOTOSHOP EXPERT! This book is not an indepth study of photoshop or color or what camera you should buy, it just gets right down to the nuts and bolts of getting specific things done. It is more like one useful technique after another but good enough that I still wanted to just read it cover to cover like a normal book. While everything in there did not get 'gold stars' from me, the results were mostly very good. If I ever get them committed to memory I wont have to keep pulling out to see 'what did Scott say to do about that?' He lays out step by step instructions for things like enlarging a photo (up to poster size) with minimum loss in quality. Personally, I was quite pleased. I was 'beginning' to 'maybe intermediate' photoshop user when I purchased.

It is an excellent book, but I didn't give it a 5-stars rating for the following reasons:
1)The author tried to make the book interesting by sharing his anecdotes with the readers. I would rather see more useful information. 2) The book didn't not have much cover on coloring, and fixing landscape image. 3) The author often presented a step-by-step instruction without much explanation. For example, no explanation on various blending mode (Overlay, Soft Light), and color mode (RGB, LAB, CMYK). All in all, it is a excellent book if you are interested in facial retouching and sharpening techniques. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 09:45:29 EST)

I probaby own, or have owned at one time, at least six million books about Photoshop, and this one is really the only one I need. It's a joke at my house that I'm always in front of my computer, with *that book* on my lap. I actually have a graphic design degree, and I still refer to "that book" at least once a week for practical guidance on how to solve a specific issue with a specific photo. I highly recommend it, and have purchased copies for several people-you know, those people who say, "Hey! Can you fix this photo for me?"

Once you are a bit comfortable with Photoshop, this tutorial adds a lot of neat, well-illustrated and descriptive tricks (without explaining the why). Probably offers the best resource on Photo Browser essentials (sure liked the contact sheet to fit an archival CD jewel box). And the section on non-destructive dodging and burning with adjustment layer mask, alone, is well worth the admission price; with the pot sweetened by sound approaches to color management and correction. Production is of high quality, and color figures accompany each step.
Yet the content doesn't get the 5 star rating it should, for lack of an accompanying CD with gallery of before-and-after images so you may follow the illustrations in the text step-by-step and find out where you went off-track. It's like doing an appendectomy right after reading an illustrated textbook. The website images take your precious time to download, and then are so highly compressed as to limit their utility in color correction; worse, most are marred by an intrusive and unsightly 'BrandX' water mark - a thoughtless timewaster that detracts from the intrinsic learning value. Scott Kelby has written the hands down best book for digital photograph retouching on the market. After working with photoshop for five years or so with a knowledge of it patched together from many different courses and books, I discovered Kelbys book. At last a book that teaches the things I want to learn, and only the things I want to learn. This is a strictly for digital photographers, graphic designers keep clicking this is not for you. But for photographers, buy this, download the images from his web site and then do the hundred or so lessons using the same photos he uses in the book, all supplied by big name photographers. When you are finished you will editing like a pro, nothing has made photoshop nearly as useful for me as has this excellent book.

I will make this review short and to the point. I had high hopes for this book because it got good reviews by so many other but for me those hopes were not realized. My main problem with the book are these. First, Mr. Kelby attempts at humor in the book can really start to wear thin... Almost on every page we have him trying his best to be a stand up comedian... at first it was cute, but by the end of the second or third chapter it just got old and lame. My advice for him is that cut down on the jokes and save room for more informative text, which is what people buy the book for. Anoter complaint is that the author skips over the whole subject of color managment and printing from Photoshop CS by using the excuse "it's been done in all the other books". This may be true, but did the author ever stop to realize that the reason that it is in all those other books is because it is so important? Granted, he has a good point about not everyone having the same printer and such, but he could have at least covered the basics.... To make matters worse he then tries to promote another book about color managment.....this of course will deplete your wallet by another 25$ or more....
On the upside I did find a few of the tutorials helpful and informative and I'm sure my digital photography will improve because of it. I just wish there was more of the good and less of the not-so-good. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 09:45:29 EST)

We have bought many photoshop books, only to waste money. This was the best spent money when it came to photoshop. I was struggling with color correction for digital images and he explained it simply and before I knew it I was soaring through images. I have done many other techniques that he describes and he makes it so easy to follow. Thank you, Scott!

If you are serious about digital photography and being able to print your photos with outstanding color, then you MUST get this book. I read the reviews here before going to my local Borders Bookstore and skimming through the index. After looking it over, I had to buy this book. It has all the stuff that none of the other books have - practical, straight-to-the-point directions for fixing problems. The author is hilarious throughout the book, not dry at all. I can add a fill flash to my photos without it looking like I added it in Photoshop now. Amazing stuff!!!
One previous reviewer who gave this a low rating whined about the book being "Mac centric". Not true. The author gives key commands for both Mac and PC. The author used a Mac when doing his screen shots for the book and I think this intimidated that reviewer for some reason. Get the book or at least check it out. If you do, you will buy it! I own a few books on Photoshop, but none compared to Scott Kelby, who keeps you in the book with his awsome before and after shots and easy to understand and do tutorials. If your interested in how to turn an ordinary picture into a masterpiece, then this is the book for you.

I've been using photoshop for 4 years or so - and I thought I was doing ok with image sharpening, correcting exposure, etc. This book however quickly illustrates better techniques for sharpening, exposure, enlarging and dodging an burning. The techniques are simply explained - with some humor mixed throughout.
This is a fantastic Photoshop book. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 09:45:30 EST)

Not the best Photoshop CS book for dig photographers. It is weak in style and content. It had very little CS specific coverage. It was mac centric.

If you need to run your photo business instead of becoming an in-depth photoshop expert this is the book for you. It has effective solutions to many common problems we all have with our digital originals. It tells you in a step by step process that is easy to follow. This is more of a fix-it book than a text to give you an in-depth knowledge of Photoshop, but would be a valuable addition to any digital photographers bookshelf.

This book is a good quick reference book. Each topic is about 2-3 pages with plenty of screen shots and pictures. There is no need to read the book start to finish. Just find your topic and jump to that page.
If you don't want to learn Photoshop in depth but still want to make great enhancements to your pictures, this is your book. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 09:45:30 EST)

This Book Has made a huge difference in my photography. The sharpening information alone is worth the price of the book. Furthermore, Scott Kelby's information on working with layers, Removing hot spots, and the red eye removal are wonderful!
I constantly use this book along with the Author's "Photoshop CS Down and Dirty Tricks". I give these books credit for a lot of my Photo sales. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 09:45:30 EST)

I have several books on Photoshop CS, but this is far and away the best one for editing digital photography. If I could only keep one book, this would definitely be it. It's full of practical ideas that cover the full range of topics.
Buy it and go through the exercises. You'll love it. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 09:45:30 EST)
