When it comes to relationships, Remy doesn?t mess around. After all, she?s learned all there is to know from her mother, who?s currently working on husband number five. But there?s something about Dexter that seems to defy all of Remy?s rules. He certainly doesn?t seem like Mr. Right. For some reason, however, Remy just can?t seem to shake him. Could it be that Remy?s starting to understand what those love songs are all about? From acclaimed author Sarah Dessen, this is a captivating novel about a tough-as-nails girl and the unexpectedly charming boy who?s determined to soften her up.

"I had no illusions about love... It came, it went, it left casualties or it didn't. People weren't meant to be together forever, regardless of what the songs say." Remy doesn't believe in love. And why should she? Her romance novelist mother is working on her fifth marriage, and her father, a '70s hippie singer, left her with only a one-hit wonder song to remember him by. Every time Remy hears "This Lullaby," it feels like "a bruise that never quite healed right." "Wherever you may go / I will let you down / But this lullaby plays on..." Never without a boyfriend, Remy is a compulsive dater, but before a guy can go all "Ken" on her (as in "ultra boyfriend behavior") she cuts him off, without ever getting close or getting hurt. That's why she's stunned when klutzy, quirky, alterna-band boy Dexter inserts himself into her life and refuses to leave. Remy's been accepted to Stanford, and she plans on having her usual summer fling before tying up the loose ends of her pre-college life and heading for the coast. Except Dexter's not following Remy's tried-and-true rules of break-up protocol. And for the first time, Remy's questioning whether or not she wants him to.
Author Sarah Dessen's ability to write novels that are both crowd pleasers and literary masterpieces of YA fiction is showcased beautifully in This Lullaby. Subtle yet completely absorbing, Lullaby is peopled with breathtakingly believable, three-dimensional characters, the very best of which is the bitter, broken Remy herself. An original love story about learning to love yourself first. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert |

My 7th grader got a hold of this book in her Advanced Language Arts class in school. Since it was the beginning of the year, I thought I'd go ahead and read it to see what kind of books the teacher had in her classroom library. Boy was I in for a shocker! This book would be a rated R film with it's language and sex alone. But what bothered me most was the flashback to a rape -- it was truly unnecessary to the story. I get that it was a catalyst for Remy's promiscuity, but a Jr. HS reader would not understand that.
Remy is really very funny in a dark, cynical way. And Dexter is a fun, lovable character. I just do not see how this scene, or the constant drinking and strong language are necessary to make this a good book. My daughter was shocked. Unfortunately, she had to learn how a girl can be hurt by sex when she is just learning what sex is and why she gets a period. It could be a good first romance without the rape scene. She won't be reading any more of Sarah's books any time soon -- and that is what SHE said. I just happen to like her decision! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-18 13:03:33 EST)

Remy doesn't believe in love. After all, if your mom has divorced and remarried about five times, how could she? And why does her mom suddenly think this new guy is "the one?" Remy's got all her relationship rules all laid out. After she gets too close to a guy, she dumps him.
But then she meets Dexter, and something about him is different. He just won't let her push him away, and soon a real relationship develops between them. Of course, there are always the complications: Remy is only looking for a summer relationship before heading off to college, Dexter isn't. This Lullaby follows Remy through her ups and downs in her relationships with her friends, her mom, Dexter, and the song her dead father wrote. Remy's struggles are very realistic and easy to follow. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, like I enjoyed Sarah Dessen's other books, and I am eagerly awaiting the release of Lock and Key, another novel by Sarah Dessen. I would highly recommend this book and Sarah Dessen's other books to everyone, especially fans of Dab Caletti. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-24 09:04:54 EST)

the synopsis of the story at first spiked my interest. however, my opinion of it got slowly lower, and lower, first with all the drinking, smoking and sex mentioned in the book. but that didn't bother me as much as how BORING it was. the story progressed so slowly, i had to put down the book at almost every chapter to occupy myself with something else more interesting. also, i kept waiting for some good substance to make up for the slow wait, but it never came and though the ending was predictable, it was extremely dissatisfying. overall, slow and boring, though i do have to say Dexter was my favorite character, i liked his personality very much.

Sarah Dessen just keeps getting better and better with each novel I read by her. The characters are so gripping and wonderful that you want to find out what happens to them, but you never want the book to end. It was no different with This Lullaby.
Remy knows relationships. Each time they begin to get too serious, she gives him "the talk". And she's given that talk many times. But one day she meets Dexter, clumsy, sweet, and-not-willing-to-give-up Dexter. They soon begin to grow closer and finally they start dating. But Remy can't figure out why she doesn't feel the need to dump him. Is it possible that she's finally figuring out what love really means? This book was impossible to put down. I just had to keep reading to find out what would happen with Remy and Dexter. What's so great about this book (and all of Sarah's books, for that matter) is that they have to do with real life. Her books are real and true, and they will leave an impression on you. If you're looking for a book about a real teenage girl's life and the happiness, heartache, sorrow, joy, and drama that goes along with it, then pick up this one. You will love it. This Lullaby falls under the rejoicible book category. (That is, I rejoice its truth and poignancy.) This was the fourth Dessen book I picked up, the one I really got caught in. The plot itself isn't all that mesmerizing, I'll admit. I mean, what's so special about a tough girl with a revolving door of boyfriends and an irresponsible mother? This book is as coming-of-age as they come, meaning unless you care about the characters and how they grow throughout the novel, you won't enjoy it. But I loved Remy, the main character, and I loved how Sarah Dessen handled her, and handled the characters that surrounded her. Which is why I say I'm a character gal.
You know, it's hard to write a tough girl like Remy without making her gratuitously hard-up or just plain narcissistic. Come to think of it, she was one of the few truly tough characters I've come across in all the books I've read. I really thought she was well defined and shaped, and reading the book through her eyes was one hell of a trip. The writing was Sarah Dessen at her best. It was exactly what it needed to be to be to make this novel work--sarcastic, intuitive, confident; but with it all accompanied a certain sadness. Pitch-perfect. Oh, and for people who have read this book: Hate Spinnerbait. Love Dexter. Yeah, baby! Would I recommend this novel? Strongly. I challenge anyone to tell me otherwise. Remy has seen a lot in her young life: a father who proclaimed he'd let her down in his only hit song (and lived up to it); a mother whose fifth wedding she has to plan knowing it probably won't last; a pothead brother who's turning into a self-help project for a up-and-coming girl he met at his job at Jiffy Lube...
And it doesn't end then there. On top of it all, there's her own issues, with love, with guys (she's been out of control since a date rape in ninth grade she never told anyone about), and control. Though she hardly ever is in control, Remy needs to feel like she is, mostly by breaking up with one of the many guys who are really all the same. And then a gangly musician whose shoes won't stay tied and heart is wide open calls to her in a car dealership. In the end, she's got to find her own song and figure out if love is worth a try after all. Sometimes it's hard watching her figure it out, but as her romance writer mother and mismatched group of friends point out, something is definitely different this time and only Remy can decide how it all will end. The first Dessen for this mom and writer. Definitely not the last. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-04 08:46:59 EST)

"This Lullaby" by Sarah Dessen will make you laugh out loud in some parts but also make you want to reach into the pages and slap the main character until she comes to her senses in other parts. It makes you think and stirs emotions inside you. "This Lullaby" is just... awesome. It kept me up for hours into the night, the words becoming a real lullaby, telling me a story before I finally put the book down to sleep. I love to read but after reading the "twilight" series, I found most books dull this book sparked my interest though, and I just couldn't put it down. It's a must-read!

This was an engrossing love story, with deep, interesting characters, but why all the bad language, sex, drugs, and drinking? It was too much. I can't believe this is recommended for children age 12 and up. The vulgarity classifies this book as adult fiction.

Well I would just say I got through to chapter 6 and then I had to call it quits. This book has a ton of foul language. Not to mention illegal activities like sneaking into clubs with fake ID's, having major drinking problems, smoking (thats not illegal but I think it's wrong). Not to mention a lot of sleeping around with people and at times I thought this book was going to have a breakthrough but then here we go again and the plot is boring. If you want a good appropriate book I strongly suggest not buying.

I threw this book in the trash once, when I was about 1/3 way through. Then later fished it out.
Apparently lots of readers loved Dexter. I hated him until about the end of the book. I found it scary and infuriating that this village idiot was stalking Remy and she didn't seem to be able to stop him. Eventually, I realized that she was quite capable of getting a restraining order and then having him arrested when, inevitably, the moron violated it. In fact, she was quite capable of giving him "the speech" in a way that even he would understand. So, obviously some part of her realized that she needed him, just as he desperately needed her. But I LOVE Dexter. This is my favorite Dessen book to date. Is it possible NOT to fall in love with Dexter? I laughed so many times out loud at the things he did or said. People on the metrolink train were giving me weird looks like I was off my meds. But back to Dexter: He was my highlight, along with the fact that I could really relate to Remy. People who don't get this book missed out on something spectacular. OKay, so maybe not EVERYTHING in Sarah Dessen's books are 100% believable, but isn't that the point? To escape into a fantasy world where a character like Dexter really exists, with his bold, honorable, humble and graceless persona? Where a wild heart like Remy's could be tempted to fall in love? It's the twists and turns in life and in this book that (believable or not) can and do happen, and make this sometimes dull and monotonous life I myself lead all that much more to look forward to. A MUST READ for sure for true Sarah Dessen fans! Rock on, Truth Squad!

Dexter is a fantastic character. He leapt off the page and made me laugh out loud more than once. I absolutely loved him, and he's the reason for the second star.
Unfortunately, this was the only good part of the book. The storyline was predictable, and the language was confusing. I had to re-read several paragraphs to figure out what the author was trying to say, and a few times I never did figure it out. Aside from Dexter and Remy, the characters seemed flat and lifeless. The mom had some character development, but it was predictable and not very well done. This story could have been great, but fizzled instead. Very disappointing. Oooh some of these reviews are kinda harsh. Personally, I've never read a better romance novel in my entire life. I normally avoid romances like the plague but after reading this book (something my friend convinced me to do) I ended up falling in love with not only the story but the characters as well. I absolutely love Dexter and I think Remy has so many different layers, she can't help but be interesting. This is one of those books I'm going to continue reading over and over for a very long time. IT'S AWESOME!!!

This book was pretty much just a book. The teenage girl in it, Remy, is supposed to be too many things at once that are not really personified. She is supposed to be an icy heart-breaker, while being a compulsive neat freak who organizes everything in life, while being an irresposible drinker and easy to sleep with, while also being an extrememly mature parent to her mom. None of these things were worked in well together, so thought I did read the book without dying of boredom, it was nothing special at all.
I read reviews that said the book went deeper than expected, and had many twists. I find myself asking: where in the world are these twists? Every single thing that happened in this book was completely expected: I could have finished the story myself after the first two chapter alone. All of the characters were flat, and none of them felt very real. The author portrayed the story in a "realistic" tone that made it feel like someone I knew was telling me this long story about one of their friends. Which means, I didn't care and I was basically bored, but politely interested. I pretty much finished it because I had paid eight dollars for the thing and had already started it. If you're really bored, go ahead and give it a try. It'll give you a few hours of something to do that won't kill you. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-10-12 12:43:05 EST)

It started off like any teen novel. Party girl who has issues with her mom meets an amazing guy. They end up together and everyone's happy, the world is perfect. Except for in This Lullaby, the story developed into one that dives into the crazy lives of struggling young musicians, and it explores the depths of a girl who never met her father yet knows how much he truly did love her.
Remy is the young woman in the story, and by the age of 1 year old she had a famous one-hit wonder written about her. Remy's father was a struggling musician and her mother was a struggling romance novelist. They had divorced before Remy was born and so when her father heard, he wrote the song about her. It was called This Lullaby and Remy never told anyone how much the song meant to her, how much she loved to hear her father sing to her, because she never got that chance The song starts slowly. A bit of guitar, just a few chords. Then a voice, one I knew so well. The words I knew by heart they did mean something to me. Nobody had to know. But they did. "This lullaby is only a few words/ A simple run of chords/ quiet here in this spare room/ But you can hear it, hear it/ Wherever you may go/ I will let you down/ but this lullaby plays on..." I'd fall asleep to it, his voice. I always did. Every time. Remy regrets never seeing her father and tells everyone that she resents the song because he said that he "will let [her] down," and he had by not being there for her. The truth was that shed knew how much he cared for her even though he never met her either and she always thanked him because all the money made off the song went to her college education. Every season Remy has a different guy, and her "summer guy" turns out to be Dexter, a lead singer in a garage band, who says that he and Remy have a rare "immediate chemistry." But of course he is just the summer guy "`Yep,' I said, `just another summer boyfriend. No worries. No entanglements. Just the way I like it.'" But what happens when timing, impulse, and romance get throw into the picture? Remy ends up driven towards the type of man she vowed never to look in the eye. A musician like her father. This novel depicts the story of a young woman with a "scattered" mother, a vulgar new stepfather, a history that one else has, and the strange guy who helps her get through all of the crazy mess that she only knows as "normal life." Of course! Just my luck. He's not just in a band he's in that band, "Why?" I said. "It doesn't matter," he said, shrugging. "You're officially a challenge. He'll never give up now!"
It all started out with Remy talking about her dad. Remy's dad was also a band member, he had a CD out. Her dad is not with her mom anymore. And her mom is on her 8th husband. Remy meets this guy Dexter, when she first meets her, he finds her as a challenge, and so that makes him what to get to know her. Along want she learns to like him but she also has problems with that. See she doesn't really believe in love but really she's never felt it before. As Remy goes through life she starts to think love is kind of a joke in life. She thinks this because watching her mom go through marriages with no problems, and now with her 8th husband. To Remy, it's not worth it. She is now going away to college but struggles with relationships. She gets all wound up over her mom, and Don's Problems, also with Dexter, and the new guy Paul. She gets up set and is having hard times trying to help her mom with her problems and not dealing to much with her own. Remy needs someone in life she respects and looks up to in her life. Who will that be? My favorite part is when Dexter (since he is in a band) and Remy are laying in his bed in the dark and he starts playing his guitar and singing. While playing a song she gets sad and then gets mad and tells him to stop playing it. She gets sad because it was a song her dad wrote and sang for her. He didn't know so he just stops and just sets and holds her. To me it's so romantic and sweet. This book to me is really about how feelings of the past and how much they can affect you or someone you know on your/their future. A lot was about her dad and her mom. Her view of love was changed, her mom was not with her dad anymore, and he died. Her mom never really dealt with the pain and let Remy helper with everything. When seeing her mom feel no pain after going through marriages, to her it seemed worthless, and that love was really not worth all the pain her mom was really going through in side. Remy had lost her father at a very young age. She isn't really dealing too well, probably because of the fact that she won't face her feelings. Her mother has been married almost a half-dozen times and is on for yet another one. Her brother has even been sucked onto the marraige train and is preparing to marry a girl that Remy doesn't exactly love. She sits in a car dealership (that's where her new step-dad-to-be works) and this very nosy and persistant boy comes up to her. She tries to resist any feelings for him, but Dexter pulls Remy into her web. He is the lead singer of a band, not the kind of guy she would go for since her dad was also a singer. Dexter and his crazy friends help Remy to deal with life and grow up a little more. It's a MUST READ by the great author Sara Dessen. I give it a thumbs-up! You will love it!

Remy has always been a bit wary of love. She never knew her real father; he left her mother just before Remy was born and never came home. His legacy to her is a song played on the radio even through her high school days, a sappy ballad about a father not being there for his daughter.
All through Remy's life living with her mother and her older brother Chris, there have always been stepfathers, men who catch the fancy of Remy's mother and end up marrying her. The romance always fades, though, and the marriages never last. Early in life Remy decided that making a long-term commitment was a bad idea. During her high school years she dated many guys but made sure no relationship lasted vey long. She preferred to break things off when it looked like the guy was getting too involved or when she simply bored of his company. Now it is the summer before Remy heads off across the country to go to college at Stanford. She has planned her mother's most recent wedding and has broken up with her boyfriend. She is ready to begin a summer of casual dating before starting college. Then she meets Dexter. Dexter is new in town, part of a band that has traveled all over. The first time he catches sight of Remy, he decides that she is the girl for him. It seems that every time she turns around, he is there. And before long, she stops resisting and decides to date him. But he is different from all of the other guys she has dated. He is harder to discourage, harder to shake off, harder to not have feelings for. Could it be that Remy may finally find out what real love is? Dexter is a fantastic character. He has many flaws, but he is so sweet and adorable that I couldn't help rooting for him and hoping Remy would give him a chance. I liked how he and Remy balanced each other out, and I also liked the ways Remy's relationships with her friends and Dexter's relationships with his friends offset the main characters so well. 'This Lullaby' was another one of Sarah Dessens great novels. Though it was a great book, reading 'Dreamland' previous to 'This Lullaby', was a bit dissapointing because of the intensity and addicting quality that 'Dreamland' offered. Remy, the main character, is a girl that doesn't believe in love after seeing her mothers five marriages fail. Her thoughts of unexisting love are tested when she meets Dexter who is a musician, which is breaking Remy's rule on dating musicians like her father who left her family when she was born leaving only a song, 'This Lullaby' for her. Find out whether she ends her streak of breaking up with guys before it gets serious or if she can actually fall in love for once and not break the guys heart. This story tests your limits on what true love is and teaches that no matter what, love still exists and always will.

Sarah Dessen's THIS LULLABY is one of the best teen books I've ever read. It's the story of Remy, a girl who has no faith in love. Part of this is because her own father never even saw her, only wrote a now-famous song, called "This Lullaby," about her before he died. It certainly doesn't help that her mother has been married four times, and, at the beginning of the novel, is about to have her fifth wedding. Remy says about her mother's marriages, "She takes on husbands the way other people change their hair color: out of boredom, listlessness, or just feeling that this next one will fix everything, once and for all."
Remy likes to feel in control of things when she's got a boyfriend. She knows all about getting into relationships, the first romantic rush, and ending them before there's any emotional attachment. She's almost always the one to dump guys, not the other way around. She's got plenty of practice at it, too. One day, at the car dealership owned by her mother's next husband, she meets a guy named Dexter. He's very determined to get to know Remy, and, at first, she thinks he's ridiculous and ignores him. Dexter, however, is persistent. When the two finally get together, everyone is shocked that Remy's staying in the relationship. Dexter is so many things Remy could never put up with. He's messy and impulsive, but, most of all, he's a musician. Until Dexter came along, Remy had a "no musician" rule, and now she's broken it. Signs point to Remy ending this relationship and not looking back. Everyone thinks that's what will happen. Everyone except Dexter, who wants it to be more than a summer thing, who has faith in their relationship. How will it all end? This is an amazing young adult book by a brilliant author. Sarah Dessen, author of several other books including THAT SUMMER and SOMEONE LIKE YOU, does an awesome job of keeping the reader's attention throughout THIS LULLABY. She does it with her original story, told in Remy's unique voice. It doesn't hurt that Sarah Dessen is great at creating fresh, original, believable characters. Thoughtful and powerful, this book also has its moments that will make readers laugh, which is a nice change of pace in the story. Every aspect of this novel surpasses expectations. This book is unique for a teen read, but very enjoyable. The characters are not what you would expect, the events are not what you would expect, in a normal teen novel. I was pleasantly surprised by the unusual character of Dexter, but fell in love with him, and I was further surprised by the changes that occur in the main character, Remy. Though not as brilliant as Dessen's "The Truth About Forever," this book is a great read that looks into the heart of a cynical teenage girl and how the most unlikely person can change her forever. Some mature content. 16 and up.

Monkey see, Monkey don't, or at least that is what Remy does when she looks at all of her mom's relationships. It is husband number five for the constant bride, and about the millionth boyfriend for Remy. Remy is what I would call the master at breaking up, partly because she does it every time she thinks she could fall for a guy. Unlike her mom , who, has fallen in "love" 5 times.
Something different happens this summer, and there is one word for it: Dexter. He is the total opposite of Remy and what she is looking for(a rock star and a sloppy mess), but yet she can't help and stay with him. Could this boyfriend be different, or will Remy's fear of love ruin her chances with Mr. Perfect? Since Sarah Dessen has written so many other great teen fiction books that I enjoyed, such as Someone Like you and That Summer, I was not surprised about how well she wrote this one. She made the characters alive and real by putting so much feeling and emotion behind them. I mean you almost just want to tell Remy to stop being so stubborn and just show affection. An example of that would be in the beginning when she wouldn't go out on a date with Dexter and even when she knew she liked him, she didn't show it. Usually, whenever I find myself wishing that I could just get into a characters head and tell him/her to do something, it is a sign that like the book. Another thing I love about this book is that it is so easy to relate to. I am almost positive when you read this book you will think that one of the characters remind you of one of your friends or family members. So if you like books that you can relate to, that make you laugh out loud, or that just will make you keep reading, this is the book for you. Overall, this book was probably one of my favorites from Sarah Dessen and took teen fiction to the next best level. The pages won't stop turning so, go, right now and get a copy! This is a fantastic, easy read for everyone who has ever felt like giving up on love or anyone who wants love. Every time I start this book I end up staying up late several nights in a row (much to the dismay of my bosses the next day), unable to put this book down. Remy is a wonderful character that seems to talk directly to the reader and Dexter is the wonderful guy that every girl dreams of falling in love with. This book is worth your time and energy. You really won't be disappointed.

Remy Starr, the eighteen year old perfectionist, always thought she had the guys figured out. For every guy, she'd have the same old routine, winning their heart and then sending them on their way like her mother who was marrying for the fifth time. Just graduating from high school, the summer is on her way which means a typical summer romance. But her usual routine is thrown off when she meets Dexter, a crazy, curly haired, not-your-average guy. Even though has a "no musicians" rule, she lets it slide for once and gives the guy a chance, finding she really likes him. Afraid to get attached, she ends it but realizes she made a mistake.
This book is like many romance novels, but what makes it unique is that you can relate with at least one of the characters. I picked up this book expecting a cheesy love story, but once I got into it, I found that it was hard to put down. Not only did it entertain me, but it taught me countless things about life. This book taught me that everything can't go your way and you can't keep avoiding what you don't want to happen. Also, you should try new things because if you don't you might miss out on a lot. It made me realize that I need to not be afraid to "go with the flow" and that everyone should do the same. I recommend this book to any teen who wants a fun read and a valuable lesson. The book is an easy to read book with some enhanced vocabulary. Unlike many romance novels, you don't have to be into love stories to enjoy this book. This Lullaby is about eighteen-year-old Remy, who's a romance cynic. Well, wouldn't you be if your mother was on her fifth husband? Remy has a pattern and a schedule with each of her boyfriends: when to go out, when to kiss, when to break up. Then she meets Dexter, who challenges that pattern. Frightened of being attached, Remy ends it. But when she's trying to get back into her regular rhythm, she falters, and decides that maybe love isn't something to be scared of. Sarah Dessen is an excellent author, with believeable heroines.

I started getting into this book when i watched "how to deal" and decided to read the book and see what it was like. WELL! There was a long waiting list at the library so i decided to pick up another book instead which turned out to be This Lullaby. Wow! Let me tell you it's almost impossible to put down. You know, beginnings are always slow because you have to kinda get a feel for all the characters but i loved how Sarah Dessen played out Dexter, making him totally different than all the other characters. I'm a writer myself and that's hard sometimes. Once you get to know all the charcters though...you really get into it and i've rolled over laughing at a couple of hilarious parts. This is my favorite book so far, Please Listen was okay but didn't get to me the way this book made me feel =P Don't miss out on this one.
Another book that has similar in character with Dexter is "The Alison's Rules" by Catherine Clark which actually now that i think about it is the same concept as this book. A girl...who doesn't believe or trust in love easily finds someone who makes her believe. Actually there's a twist to Alison's Rule...in the end. Read it and find out! Remy Starr has never been the one to fall in love quickly. She "knows everything" about relationships; how long the swooning period lasts, when that period will end, what each and every single signal means from the other person, and how to end the relationship scott-free. She has incredible standards, with one "no musicians" rule that she always follows. But that is before she meets Dexter. Clumsy, curly cue'd hair, sloppy, lead-singer of "Truth Squad" Dexter.
This book is one of my favorites. This is the third time that I have read it because I love the plot so much. Anyone can relate to one of the characters, from shy Lissa, to Outgoing Remy. Remy's life is one that most would aspire to have, she is leaving for Stanford in the Fall, she has an outstanding Job, and she has no stings attatched from any relationship she has encountered. She is a living heroine to the modern teenage girl. After reading this book everyone will learn something new about themselves, and they will change their view on dating, love, and relationships. I reccomend this book to each and every teenager or young adult. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-11 20:02:42 EST)

This Lullaby is a captivating story that really hooked me within the first chapter. This Lullaby is about a girl named Remy who has never been in love. She's never let herself or has never wanted to. It's always one boyfriend after the other. This is her last summer with her friends before she travels off to Harvard. So why would she want a boyfriend to tie her down, she doesn't want any attachments when she leaves.
But when she meets Dexter a rock band musician she starts getting scared. She feels too much for him, so instead of showing her feelings she keeps pushing him away. Not wanting to become attached. But every time she pushes him away, he pulls closer and closer. The thing with Remy is she needs cold hard facts of why things are the way they are. When maybe this could be faith, and there are no facts of why these things are happening. She already has too much stuff to worry about on top of going to college, her moms getting married again for like the fifth time, and Remy is her personal secretary, running all the errands, making sure everything's all set for the wedding. But when summer's coming to an end Remy starts feeling confused, does she really love Dexter, or is she just scared of the thought of being alone... This is one of my favorite books of all time and have read it about 5 times. Sarah Dessen creates this character, Remy, that is easy to relate to, especially for teenagers. Remy is this sarcastic, realistic girl that knows better than to fall hard for every guy that she dates. Dexter the guy with the heart of gold that won't let her go no matter how hard she tries to push him away. It's a fairytale for teenagers but one that could actually happne. Hilarious, clever and true. I love this book!

This was a very good book.
I will admit I started out a little surprised, it seemed so cynical and totally blunt and I was surprised to be reading a book about love from such a real perspective. And that ended up being such a huge deal. Remy's character is so awesome, she thinks she has guys all figured out, she knows exactly how to dump them and exactly when. She is a perfectionist and a neat freak and flakes etc piss her off. She is a cold hearted cynical [..]with a mean streak and a bad rep for being easy. Dexter is a musician with no real future for the time, he and his band move all over the country in a white van and do not know how to do laundry. Dexter is impulsive and easy going a totally happy go lucky kind of guy. The oppostie of Remy and their beginning starts out rocky. Somehow they end up spending an unforgettable summer together and Remy gets a new life lesson about love after her mother's 4 divorced marriages making progress on number 5 and 16 chapters of stubborn know-it-all-ness. This book will give logical thinkers new hope for love and tell the story all teens go through the time of moving on and growing up all in a very real way no sugar coating for this book. It's a great read and I'll tell you a secret, it is 5:04 in the morning on a sunday and I spent all night reading this book beacause i could not put it down. The laughs and tears you will have for the book make in something inspiring. Read it and enjoy yourself but be prepared to never want to put it down. This book was probably one of my all time favorites. I usually don't read a lot of fiction books, but this book was amazing. I'd highly recommend this great page-turner. Almost all the chapters ended with a secret of Remy's, so you wouldn't want to put the book down. You won't want to put the book down! This book is most enjoyable to teenagers because many of the things the characters are going through can relate to their life.

I was very skeptical about this book at first, but decided to read it anyway. I couldn't put it down, it was so great. I felt like I was there with Remy the whole time, Sarah Dessen really brings the book to life. I would definitely recommend it, you don't need to be all into romance to like the book.

This Lullaby had a predictable plot to it; Connivingly cold girl meets weird guy, fall in love but not realize it, then claim it at the last minute. But what I liked about it was that it was, well, sweet. The second to last chapter of the book was almost enough to make me go "aww." I liked that it didn't have any explicit descriptions of sex, but kept it real. You will love the compulsive organizer, Remy, and the irresistable Dexter with "flailing limbs" for their endearing flaws.

I loved this story, yet I'm curious about what will happen next with dexter and the girl, it's very agrivating when youu don't know how thier life turns out. But it's kind of like real life, no one knows whats going to happen, in fact that's why this story is so good, it's realistic. So no one, not even the biggest dreamers, will know for sure.

Everyone told me that this was a really good book, so I was expecting, well, a good story when I bought it. And at first I was happy with it; the writing was fresh and realistic and breezy, and even though the plot was sort of a downer (small town girl, bad with relationships, moms on fifth wedding ect.)I kept going hoping that the plot would get a bit better. Then they introduced Dexter, the most complex and well written character in the entire book. Dexter's complex, funny, and unique, and you instantly fall in love with him. The thing is, once Dexter and Remy, the main character start their romance, even I could figure out how everything would end up. And I was right. So maybe it was entertaining at the time, but trust me, the plot in this book, besides some quirks about Dexter and Remy's mom, is completely old. Remy's friends are the more interesting, fresh people in the story, and the ones I would have liked to hear about. Love Dessen, but I don't love this book.

How much pain can one single person go through? Well I'd say a lot, according to Remey Star. With her real dad dead since she was little, her mom getting married five times, and Remey's boyfriend troubles its hard to tell if Remey even has a life. Remey is always in charge of everything, especially when it comes to her mother's marriages. Remey barely has time for her friends, let alone her boy-band, singer, boyfriend, Dexter. Remey is not into love and thinks it's foolish, but when Dexter comes along Remey changes. Even her friends notice the "Remey change". Will Remey be able to keep Dexter, or will he become just another summer boyfriend?
This book is very interesting. There are so many things going on at once its hard to put the book down for fear that you'll miss something! This book is a book I am sure that we all have something in common with. Between bad breakups, family problems, job crises, and brother arguments there's bound to be something we've all can relate to! The worst part of this book is how Remey is scared. Remey runs from love, for fear that she'll end up like her mother. It's hard to sit and read the book wondering if Remey will cave in and let love happen or not. This book would be a good read for girls in their teenage years. In the book Remey is faced with everyday challenges that some of us could say we have been through. It's good to read how other people take care of some of the same situations that you are put through in life. All Remey needs to learn is that love takes a leap of faith and a happy ending is not always part of the deal. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-11 20:02:42 EST)

This was a really good book. I didn't think that it was worth a full five stars but definitely re-read material. Sarah Dessen was able to conger up characters that were so real it gave the story that down-to-earth feel. Her main character Remy was a person that several teen girls are going to be able to relate to in some way, myself included. She is an independent girl but she as some commitment issues she tries to work out. I did think that Dessen could have wrote a few chapters inbeween the last two but it was good because it gave you a chance to put in the little details yourself. All in all I would definitely recommend this book to anyone (well girl wise.)

I absolutely loved this book. It really got me hooked right off the start! It's like watching a movie, being interrupted, and having that killer pain of not knowing what's going to happen next. Every chance I got I had my nose in the book. It got me thinking about love, friendship, the importance of family, taking chances and moving on.
Remy is the main character that gets the chance to experience all of these values. Just graduated from High School she has the whole summer laid out ahead of her. She is a perfectionist at everything, ranging from finding the "perfect guy" to making her way into Stanford. Everything is in perfect alignment until she meets Dexter. Rules of never dating a guy in a band are swiftly pushed aside when Dexter this clumsy character stumbles into her life. They're always bumping into each other and finally taking the chance of letting destiny take its course. This crazy romance has a crazy twist as things unexpectedly happen and choices are made. As her life just seems to find a way out of the perfect alignment, she finds herself confused and for once, unsure of her actions. She has family drama, leaving old friends behind, and for once maybe taking a chance on love. You learn that life can get out of hands, emotions and actions take place that you have no control over. The lesson learned is that you've just got to sit back and enjoy the chaos. Finding the strength to just let go, and take a chance! I strongly recommend this book to those who love romance and a strange twist! For those who need a good laugh to those who need a little encouragement to let fate take its course! This Lullaby, written by Sarah Dessen, is an outstanding book. I absolutely loved everything about it. It is a perfect book for a teenager to read. In This Lullaby, so many topics that teenagers in this day and age go through, i.e. sex, drugs, guys, love, college, parties, alcohol, best friends, parents, and summer.
Remy is the main character in this book. She is the kind of girl to always be in control of the relationship she is in, and always in control of her emotions. But when Dexter, a musician who, in the beginning, she cannot even tolerate to be in the same room as, comes flying through her window one morning, everything changes. She loses control of her emotions, and actually starts to let loose and be a human being. Remy is not just a cynical and facetious robot-like person anymore, but a fun girl who is lively and tolerable to be around. This change in personalities is great in so many ways, but could, in many ways hurt her future in college and life in general. I really liked this book because I could relate to the main character really well. She was always on edge when she was dating a guy, and never wanted the relationship to get to serious. She had to be in control, and she had to be the one to give the trademark "Speech" to the now unfortunate guy. I really enjoyed reading about her life and experiences because she seemed like such a cool character and friend [in the story]. It seemed like everything in this book was in some way, something that I could relate to. I never got bored reading This Lullaby, and I would definitely recommend it to all of my friends. Most books start off slow in the beginning and get good in the end, but I thought the total opposite with this book. It had such a great start and then just got sort of slow in the end. This was the first book i read by the author and I will probably read mroe because I heard some of them were great, but I was not fully impressed with this book.

I love this book! It really surprises me that is relates to me how much that it does. Remy is the main character and she reminds me alot of myself. Remy's mom just got remarried for the fifth time and in the end her husband ends up cheating on her. One of my favorite scenes is when Remy and her friends douse him with soda. There are a ton of very funny things and alot of things that we all can learn from. This book is just amazing.

This Lullaby was an interesting story with good dialog throughout the book. The character development was paced well, and the main characters were very likable, even the cynical Remy. It would make a great screenplay. However, I strongly disagree with Amazon's review stating this is a novel for 12+. There is a tremendous amount of under aged drinking, fake ID's and all; a few sex references (as in "it's OK to be a slut"); and a fair amount of cursing, including the "F" word in all its various forms. I got this book for my daughter's 12th birthday, based on Amazon's review. I decided to read it first. I'm SO GLAD I did. It is positively too old for a 12 year old. I think I'll put it away until maybe her 16th birthday.

There have been many stories about cynical girls finally giving in and taking a chance on a guy and finding love, etc., but I happen to find this one of the most original. The main character, Remy, is well developed and her reasons for not believing in the foreverness of love and her rediscovery that maybe it does exist are not at all cliche. The story line is not boringly predictable. This is a book that can make you laugh out loud, and can bring tears to your eyes. I read it in one day, I couldn't seem to put it down.
