I liked how the alliance between the werewolves and vampires came to fruition, but I still find the love triangle between Bella, Edward, and Jacob had to believe! Either way the best part of the book was about the legend of the spirit warriors, maybe Stephenie should take her time and write a quality book about the werewolves and try to be a bit more conscientious of writing strong female characters.

(Hide Review...)  Potential abusers galore (SPOILER at the end)
Reviewer Permalink
Eclipse, being the third book in the Twilight series, made me very twitchy. It wasn't the character development, which is not Meyer's strong point. And it wasn't the advancement of the plot, which IS Meyer's strong point.

No, my problem with this novel for young adults is the red flag behavior from both Edward and Jacob, marking them as likely potential abusers. Is Meyer for real with this? What is the deal with Bella? She is such an idiot. Granted, she's a teenager so no one has perhaps sat her down for a talk about how it is necessary to cultivate a sense of self-preservation and personal dignity. No, this girl lets Edward get away with being a masterful control freak who tells her where she can and cannot go and who she can and cannot be friends with. I found it really worrying. Will teenage girls read this and think that this is how "true love" is supposed to be?

And what about Jacob and his physical pushiness? It bothered me that he forced himself on Bella in a sexual manner and that she punched him, sure...but then was okay with it, not even appearing to be all that bothered. And what about Charlie's reaction when Bella told him that Jacob forced a kiss on her? "Didja hit him? Well, good. But go, tiger! Woo!"

I did not enjoy Meyer's trip into the freaktastic world of controllers and predators where girls get stalked by their boyfriends' sisters and put on "house arrest" so that they won't go see friends who are considered to be off limits. A place where boyfriends will indulge in dangerous driving (Edward being two inches behind Bella's truck's bumper as she left LaPush so that he could show her how upset he was) in order to punish the naughty girlfriend for going to see a friend. Could that be any more wrong?

And yet somehow, Meyer presents her plot and characters as if this is an understandable and even commendable way to behave.

Very troubling. This is not empowering for girls. Bella is not a character for girls to look up to. She is a weakling and an idiot and she's so besotted with Edward, she ignores things that should have any girl with a brain telling a guy to get the hell out of her life. It really bothered me that Bella keeps parroting the words that Edward is the sweetest and the kindest and the most unselfish and the bestest undead boyfriend a girl could ever have....ugh. We found out in "Twilight" that he's a stalker who's not averse to a little B&E and "New Moon" didn't do much to redeem him. Now we've got Crazy Jealous Boyfriend who has to constantly keep tabs on the little woman. Ugh.

SPOILER ALERT

I've read "Breaking Dawn" and I know there's a happy ending and that Bella develops a spine and a brain, but still... In both "Eclipse" and "Breaking Dawn," Edward and Jacob emerge primarily as egotistical, arrogant people with a testosterone overload. Girls, please don't these characters are what make a good boyfriend in real life.

I started this series at my girlfriend's recommendation. I was afraid it would be like those Danielle Steele books. But it was surprising. This particular book in the series starts tying up some loose ends and I have already bought the 4th book in the series to read next.

This is probably my least favorite of the four books, but the details in it are definitely necessary for the story as a whole. I'm not quite to the halfway point of book four, and I just love the "story" in this saga. I do not know that I have ever read such long books so quickly, but my attention is caught and rapt and Stephenie never lets it go. I truly am "thirsting" for more.

(Hide Review...)  Ruined the characters, especially Edward
Reviewer Permalink
I LOVED Twilight. I found New Moon to be a very, very good sequel. But Eclipse? What happened to the characters?!

1) the character of Edward barely resembles Edward from Twilight. He's no longer Hot; just a creepy obsessed guy with cold lips.

2)it must really be her scent that has Ed and Jake's shorts in knot all the time, because Bella spends most of the book disheveled, throwing on whatever clothes she rummages around for, and barely taking time to brush her teeth let alone her hair. OK - I realize that comment might sound shallow, but puh-leez, could the heroine at least not be a mess through 90% of the book? Even other characters remark that she looks a mess most of the time.

3) I realize that having Charlie totally clueless is necessary to advance plot lines, but how on earth is a cop as dense and easily fooled as Charlie is? And the man would stand around and starve if Bella didn't stop her own personal crises for five minutes to heat up spaghetti sauce for him.

4) Jacob could have been a sympathetic, appealing character if he wasn't randomly transformed into a cheap romance novel brute. Then he's Nice Jacob again! Then he's a pawing brute! Now he's nice again! Totally inconsistent.

5) The romantic scenes became just blah, blah, blah. Ed has cold lips, his chest is like stone, he's strong, they kiss then he pulls away. The scenes don't have to be sexed up, just not a constant repeat of the same things over and over.

6) The writing. Bella doesn't "sound" like Bella anymore. The same descriptions are repeated over and over and over again. Bella's truck is slow, it's rainy all the time, Ed is cold, Jake is hot, they're both strong, and every single time Bella has a deep thought she bites her lip. The book could have been reduced by half the pages and still been the same story.

ON A GOOD NOTE: I liked the side stories of the Cullen family members. I might be alone in this but I really liked the values in the book, particularly about sex. There's always Jackie Collins books for sex. A nice romance with boundaries is refreshing for a change.

(Hide Review...)  Friends of opposite genders
Reviewer Permalink
I think Stephenie Meyer captured the difficulty in having friends of opposite genders down to the T. Someone always falls in love-- and when there's another person involved... it makes a positive situation unpleasant.

Eclipse picks up right were the last novel left off-- starting with Jacob being hurt and the back and forth letters between him and Bella-- followed by his aggressive attempts to make more of his friendship with Bella.

Now... reading the reviews, I would have thought Jacob was a terrible character that imposed himself on Bella. But that's not the case. He wouldn't have hurt Bella in any way. He loved her and wanted her to be happy (as did every character in the book for some reason). I liked the way Meyer broke Bella's confusion into her separate selves. The one she was with Edward and then the one she was with Jacob. She was forced to choose the better of two good situations. Anyone who has fallen in love while attempting to maintain friendships of the opposite gender should be able to relate to the tension and jealousy .. along with some degree of "choosing."

A few points were awesome.. like the heart to heart between Jacob and Edward in the tent while awaiting the "war." -- also, I laughed out loud visualizing the vampire attempting to fight after the werewolf had torn off both of its arms. Seriously.. I wonder if Meyer had intended the visual humor. :-)

Also with Jake... I don't know why reviewers made him out to be a villian. He's young. It doesn't excuse being hostile, but he wasn't terrible. He said things as they came to mind and rarely held back. He had a potty-mouth and had found his first love. My only concern when reading for him was that he was going to become one of those guys with way too much baggage... permanently damaged because of Bella's inability to make up her mind and see things as they were soon enough.

I also like Meyers parallel with Bella, whose first love was Edward. Sometimes first's work, and sometimes they don't. I do think its rare that someone could find themselves on both sides... being in love for the first time and having someone ELSE fall in love with you for the first time as well. Something should have clicked for this girl.... She let it drag on for way too long.

I didn't read this one as fast as the others. The beginning and ending were awesome. The middle left something to be desired.... But I did enjoy learning more about Alice in the middle of the book....... Her character provided relief to Bella's ridiculous decisions...

Also, I found Edwards perspective interesting when he admits his fault when leaving Bella and explains that the repercussions (Jacob) would remain because of his error. Not many people would admit to that. I guess that shows the strength of his character. Most people would just blame Bella for being cruel, indecisive, and overly dramatic (like me :-) ..).

And also.... (kiddin).

Stephenie Meyer has captured a whole new audience. It's an affront to say this is "teen material". I've read so many things that are so complex for complexities sake and you really tire of that. This has absolute balance, breathtaking romance - love anyone would love to live (or die for). The characters are so vivid, the movie casting is so right that I hope they will continue to the end - they are Edward and Bella. I haven't read anything fictional (save for Harry Potter) in years - because it was so repetitive and completely predictable. I haven't lost sleep trying to get to the end of a book in years, I have read all four of these in 6 days and COULD NOT put them down. Stephanie has taken us on an unbelievable thrill ride that I hope Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson don't see it as typecasting but stay on for the ride, because Twilight was made for them and they were destined to be Twilight.

What isn't over the top is a repeat from the first two books ; Bella's thoughts on Jacob and Edward, it's the same over and over and over. I've seen better story lines from cheap romance novels which use a fill in the blank writing method.

I will be blunt from the get-go, I hate this book. I was a fan of the series before, even though I thought New Moon to be boring, I enjoyed the series and wanted to continue being a fan of Stephenie Meyer. Of course I was as excited as anyone else to read Eclipse, but by the time I finished I found myself looking for others who disliked it as well.

*The following will be quite spoilery. Continue at your own risk.*

The book begins naturally where New Moon left off. Edward has returned from a near-suicide and Bella has taken him back after all those months of moping (such harcore moping that some pages in New Moon are mere the titles of months and nothing else). First off, I could not possibly understand why Bella took him back so quickly. Edward left her in a very cold-hearted manner, stole her things because he decided it was better for her to heal without them, and ends up being a completely dramatic idiot who tries to commit suicide. Yet these are the characteristics of true love? I don't buy it. The character of Bella is a complete idiot, and I wish girls all over the country didn't look up to her so blindly. It's clear that in essence all she is is a self-insert Mary Sue.
Naturally this book was all about a love triangle. As with the other two, it was never about vampires, it was never a coming of age story, it was never even truly about love. It was about a girl and a guy's obsession for each other, and their horribly disguised lust. But let's suspend disbelief for a moment. Let's say Bella and Edward truly are in love- how on earth was it possible for her to suddenly be deeply in love with another man? This girl has got to be the most selfish creature in the world. I understand that Jacob helped her through the ugly times when Edward dumped her, but why couldn't she renounce him when Edward returned? Better yet, why couldn't she tell Edward to bugger off? Instead we get a load of angst where she stubbornly tells the readers that she is indeed NOT in love with Jacob, no matter how much he insists upon it. We get chapters and chapters of Edward and Jacob behaving like dogs with Bella as their bone. I swear, I thought any minute now one of them is going to urinate on her so as to claim indesputable ownership.
Spurred on by this love triangle issue, Edward becomes the most horrible fictional man I've ever known in my life. Abusive would be an understatement. He was creepy, disgusting, and foul. I wanted to kill Edward so many times. Specifically during moments like the time he dismantles Bella's engine so that she can't see Jacob. He does this in a very creepy way too. He knows she won't be able to hear him doing anything, so he sneaks over to her car before she can. Dismantles the engine, sits in the passenger seat KNOWING he's going to startle her, and eventually does exactly that. He scares her, then quietly tells her why he's there, and she returns to her room.
Then there's the times Bella had to think quick in order to escape Edward and Alice in order to see Jacob. There's the time Edward buys Alice a new car so that she can keep Bella hostage. I ask you, how can so many girls be in love with this man?
The whole time you've got some sort of idea of a plot going on in the background, but it's being drowned by all the annoying angst. At some point the characters figure out that there might be an army being built against them, and then we have this huge build up of a battle that's going to happen. The battle happens, and we see none of it. Instead we get Victoria somewhere farther away trying to kill Bella- though she gets quickly done away with by Edward. Yet another moment where Bella seems like she's entirely useless. She tries to imitate a person from an old werewolf legend, but regardless ends up looking like an idiot when Edward tells her that he and Seth had everything under control the entire time. It's like you could almost hear Edward thinking, "Silly woman, you know you know you're only supposed to sit there and be scared while I act the hero."
What's terrifying is that a woman wrote this. What's even more terrifying is that many more women, young and old, eat it up without question.
I wouldn't recommend this book to my worst enemy.

This book continues on the dramatic love, adventure, and interesting story of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen. I have two sides or opinions on this book. First I will share the bad side of it. Though I really enjoyed Twilight, the first book inn this series, I have had a hard time catching on to the rest of them. Twilight was very hard for me to put down and kept me turning the pages, but this book seems very bland and I don't feel compelled to read it. By the third book you begin to familiarize yourself so much with the unique story, it just seems normal and natural to have a boyfriend who is a vampire and a best friend that is a werewolf. Though this seems odd to readers not familiar with the series, once you begin to read it, it just seems to be a story of reality. Though it is intense at some times, this book seems a bit downhill.
I do have a lot of positive feedback on this book too. This novel keeps you interested enough to continue reading it, though does not pull you in enough to make you never put it down. I feel it is at its peek when it leaves you with heart-wrenching cliffhangers that make you hungry for more. It seems to have a lot of climaxes and falls, though not a very prevalent and definite one. I like the idea of having several small rises and falls as it adds to the overall value of the novel. As the book goes on, particularly about two thirds the way through the book, it gets very intense and interesting, making it more difficult to put down. This book is definitely one you should read if you begin the Twilight Series, but you must stick with it even when you feel it is getting the slightest bit boring!

The rivalry for Bella's affections was so juicy:

First, there was Edward-the vampire, mature (117 years old), romantic, strong (like a rock), super-sensitive to Bella's feelings, and gorgeous (with a capital G). He is also her first-love. She loves him so much, but it may cost her her life.

Then, there is sweet (16 year old) Jacob, who is half-human and half-werewolf, adventuresome, and fun-loving. Loving him could be unsafe (Emily), but she could have a human life and babies.

But, if she chooses Edward, then she will have no life or babies (Rosalie warned her of this). Bella would also have to give up her family and friends.

Now, with Jacob-Bella could have warmth (he has a lot of fur), her family, her human life, her friends, and his family's legends.

This is such fun fiction!

Stephenie Meyers keeps getting better and better with each book. She takes you further into the world of supernatural beings that began in Twilight, and moved into New Moon. She has been able to capture the imagination of the reader and not let it go. To say this book or this series is captivating is a serious understatement. Stephenie has a true gift for words. She speaks about these beings so well that you almost believe that you will see them out on the streets in your hometown.
Bella's story is far from finished in Eclipse and it sets you up nicely for the final "chapter" in her story.

First of all, I have to say that the literary quality of these novels is very, very low on the totem pole. Also, once again I found myself sludging through huge, boring chunks of this book--however, the "udpates" on the Edward-Bella-Jacob love triangle were certainly a welcome change. Again, I was left wanting to know what is going to happen to the characters--in particular Jacob, who seems by far the most realistic of them all--therefore I will certainly move on to the fourth book. But to be truthful...if you avoid starting this series at all, you're certainly not missing anything.

Being fortunate to spend a fair amount of time with teenagers (I am an adult) I had to see what this book was about because it is all they can talk about(the teens.)

I was muttering throughout the first book negative remarks. But I finished it and went looking for second in the series.

Read the second, lots more muttering, and upon finishing it quickly went out in search of the third in the seriews.

Stayed up late, quickly finished the third and immediately picked up the fourth book in the series (thinking ahead I had bought it when I found the third in the series - I knew I was hooked.)

Think the books are written over a three year period. The author signfigantly grows. The fourth book had much more content to it than the previous three. Characters weren't necessarily any fuller - but there sure were a lot of them! And I was able to keep track of them the way they were presented.

One of the reviewers made a comment about is it enough merit alone for the book that teenage girls are reading - comparing that to an anorexic eating a marshmallow.

Let's be a tad more positive here and look at the big picture. They now have four fairly large novels on their bookshelves, they will be lined up five deep around the corner and down the block to see the new movie, and let's not forget ... they have a common bond - they can talk for hours about "what it ...", and "don't you think Edward ..."

A rite of passage - a bit different from Nancy Drew - Brenda Starr - but nonetheless - it is and will be a part of this generation.

Rumor has it that the SAT's will be adding a question about the Cullen's family.

Awesome ending, but unlike the two books before, this one leaves you with a major cliffhanger... looking forward to reading breaking dawn and hoping that the story continues on as it's set by the end of this book because my god there were way too many annoying plot changes during the course of this book and the whole thing about everyone feeling guilty is a little too...well i think the best word here is one i shouldn't use as it would be blasphemous to the author's religion and therefore the underlying idea in these books. anyway besides that, i flew through it, especially the last 1/4. another recommended read for those who need a book for pure entertainment sake. bella is still needy and weak, edward is still beautiful (over-mentioned) and guilty, and jacob is irritating and boring.

As long as don't expect more than entertainment, you won't be disappointed :)

I was a little annoyed that my book didn't come as fast as I wanted to,mostly because of the way my order fell on the weekend, but it was in great condition for a decent price.

This book arrived promptly and in absolute new condition, including all of the unopened items that go along with the special edition copy (t-shirt decals and Breaking Dawn cover art). The book looked as beautiful as if I had bought it straight from the shelf of my local bookstore before anyone had gotten a chance to touch it.

I thought this book was a HUGE disappointment. I managed to make it through the whiny angsty New Moon which I utterly despised and hoped that Eclipse would redeem it. Nope. Bella is an insult to me because she is a role model for girls my age and she is a whiny, weak, helpless, self absorbed, brat. Never have I been more disgusted by a main character before. She has no independence and gives up education and a successful life for Edward. Edward, the most boring, controlling, pushover vampire of all time. He had the personality of a cardboard box! Why are people so in love with him?
Don't even get me started on Jacob! I didn't like him in New Moon but in Eclipse I passionately despise him! He is so in love with Bella for no reason what so ever and is a perverted freak! If I was Bella I would have punched him or something! Why is she so weak and helpless? It disgusts me. And while all this is happening Edward says, "I'm happy as long as Bella is happy,"
What the heck? No normal teenage boy would stand around and listen to Jacob's nasty thoughts about Bella and not be upset about it! I think it is incredibly unrealistic even if it is a vampire. The whole book was a waste of time and I did not enjoy it at all. Don't even bother reading it.

I loved this book. Edward is back from being gone for most of New Moon. It was interesting to see the struggle Bella faces after bonding with Jacob during Edward's absence. Spoiler* The Jacob/Bella kisses annoyed me though! At least she makes the right decision in the end.

I could not put any of these books down. It is a great feeling when you are so lost in a book you go to bed at 11 pm but read until 2am, and it feels like only a few minutes have passed. I have given them to my mother in law who loves them also. It is a series of books for people of all ages!

I thought this third book of the Twilight Saga was just as addicting and wonderful as the other books in the series! I love the inevitable love story between Bella and Edward, and how clearly Edward's actions show the true meaning of love! I've already reread it and told everyone I know to read these books! You should too!

I have read Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and am finishing Breaking Dawn. I absolutely loved Twilight, New Moon, and am really enjoying Breaking Dawn. However, I did not find Eclipse to be nearly as good. It seemed like there was just a constant jump back and forth between Bella's love of Edward and Jacob. This really got on my nerves. It was like a waste of writing. Really, there could've been just the three books minus this one. Overall, I like the series.

My name is Patrick and I am a college freshman studying in Miami, FL. Over four years ago, I began writing a book entitled The Little Boy Story, but I was unable to find representation for it and thus it still is unpublished. However, through my frustration at the process of trying to find representation,[..]serves to establish the careers of the best undiscovered talents in America. So far, it accepts books, music and movies, but I hope to later include paintings. My website distinguishes itself from other literary agents because you don't need an agent to submit your work, and there aren't any submissions fees to speak of. All of it is very upfront: All submissions will be accepted (a very unique distinction amongst publishers), and the artist will be paid four times a year. Having been a victim of the industry, I know what it feels like to have your dreams cast away in a matter of seconds, and all I really wanted was to give the public an opportunity to read, listen or watch works that they would otherwise never experience. Finally, another innovation unique to this website is that I give the public the opportunity to search for talent on their own. Visitors of the website can serve as "artist representatives", almost like agents, except that they have no responsibilities: the agreement is that for every artist directed to[...], the "artist representative" is entitled to a percentage of the total earnings- meaning that more jobs are created, a fast, easy, simple job is available to teenagers and those without work experience, and finally, the "representative" shares the earnings without taking money from the artist. They are required to do nothing else. In this website, I changed everything about the publishing industry that I didn't like, and recreated it so that it could benefit as many people as possible. I know there are a lot of people that can benefit from this website, and I know that through your support, my small website might have a fighting chance to impact everything we know about publishing. I hope that this story has tweaked your interest.

It's nice to see that I'm not the only one who was disgruntled with this book. After all the whining and professing that she can't live without Edward, she is on the verge of getting everything her selfish, snotty little soul can ask for. All Edward wants is marriage and she can't EVEN grant him that??? He's done SO much for her, giving his life to her but she can't be unselfish enough to grant him his one wish? But, of course, she is determined to spend eternity with him...today. But not tomorrow, because, of course, after bullying everyone to her terms, SHE's not ready. What the heck? Is this girl seriously unbalanced? She's rude to everyone if it goes against HER wants...no gifts, no parties, no wedding, no ring. If she truly knew how to love, she would want to GIVE happiness to the people that she claims to love, not just take, take, take on HER terms only.

I found myself being quite upset with the main three characters of the book...Bella for being so wishy-washy and whiney and self-centered. She claims she's nothing special but she apparently wants all the guys to be in love with her. I just can't understand her actions. She swears that Jake is ONLY a friend, yet she quickly changes all of that. She's SOOO in love with Edward...or is that Jacob? If you are as deeply in love with one person as she claims to be with Edward, why on earth do you keep trying to hook the other guy in? She is a self-centered little twit. I grew to hate Jacob in this book. He's pushy and arrogant and is so in love with Bella that he assults her?!? Yeah, that spells love in my book. Yeah, right. He claims he's her friend but he doesn't act like a friend, give in gracefully and be supportive. Plus his "fantasies" about Bella while he knows that Edward can hear, makes me move him into the most hated charater side. He's as self-centered as Bella. Maybe they WOULD make the best pair since they only care about themselves. Edward, in his "I want nothing but her happiness" turns into a wuss. I can't believe that he's just so happy to let her and Jacob stomp all over him. In the early part of the book, he's snarling at Jacob to keep his hands to himself...or else. By the end of the book, he's condoning Jacob holding her all night because he can't keep her from freezing. He's too good in this book. Grow a pair, boy!

And don't EVEN get me started on Charlie. What a sterling guy he is! NOT. "Please assult my daughter because YOU are the one I'm routing for." No wonder Bella is so messed up.

I have to say that my favorite characters in this book are Alice, Jasper and Emmett.

I'll read the last one and I'm still routing for Edward, but if I were him, I'd tell Bella to take a hike and I wouldn't look back.

Having recently finished the first and second books of Stephanie Meyer's 'Twilight Saga' for the first time, I dove into the third book 'Eclipse' with already-lowered expectations.

By this point in the series, I realized I was in it for the long haul, despite all of Meyer's flaws as a writer, and just decided to solider on and perhaps amuse myself by making fun of this book. Well as it turns out, I didn't have TOO much chance to do that, since right off the bat I found myself liking 'Eclipse' and the way it returns this saga to some semblance of normalcy (especially after the drastic and depressing turn of events in 'New Moon'). Here we see Bella and Edward returning to the somewhat mundane routine of high school, anticipating graduation, college, and their future together (all the while keeping up the pretense of being normal teenagers). It's at times like this when I feel the series is at its strongest; when it walks the thin line between Bella's normal, everyday life and her secret other life. (And it's just plain fun to watch the vampires masquerading around as humans.)

The secondary characters, who for the most part seemed to have existed previously only for the sake of convenience, start to finally become more developed in 'Eclipse.' A lot of my previous gripes about this series have begun to be addressed here as well, such as Charlie's lack of concern for his daughter. Here we see him finally being the stern and protective father he should be, and taking an active role in Bella's upbringing (for once). We also see much, MUCH more of Jacob and his clan's involvement in this story, which 'New Moon' had slowly and tediously built up. In 'Eclipse', the budding love triangle between Bella, Edward, and Jacob explodes into reality, and plays an integral part in the book's terrifying climax. Surprisingly, Bella didn't even get on my nerves quite as much as she did in the first two books, but there was simply SO MUCH going on in 'Eclipse' there was little time to dwell on her typical "woe is me" outlook on life, and I'm thankful Meyer spared us.

There was still plenty of the ridiculous and contrived scenarios, cringe-worthy dialogue, and over-the-top campiness that seems to underscore this entire series. But in 'Eclipse' I found myself not minding these things so much--which I suspect is mostly due to all the hot & heavy love scenes in this book--a very welcome distraction.
