Ruth Yaron cares deeply about what your baby is eating--so much so that her bestselling Super Baby Food is encyclopedic in both scope and size. Ounce for hefty ounce, this manual/cookbook/reference guide is worth its weight in formula, packed as it is with detailed information on homemade baby food, nutritional data, feeding schedules, cooking techniques, recipes, and other invaluable feeding tips. Yaron builds her compelling argument for making baby food at home on the simple premise that food profoundly impacts health, especially when an infant's developing digestive tract is involved. Parents will learn why babies should start out on rice porridge, bananas, avocados, and sweet potatoes before advancing to more difficult-to-digest foods such as wheat cereals and milk products. While Yaron's passionate stance and vegetarian bias may turn off some parents, others will be grateful for her strict attention to potentially harmful additives and chemicals. No matter what their eating philosophy, most parents will appreciate the economy and surprising ease of making baby food at home. This is not gourmet cooking; all you have to do is learn how to boil water and operate a blender. For veggies, simply steam some vegetable chunks and blend. For baby porridge, just grind some whole grains in a blender and boil. It's that simple. And when you're feeding your baby, simple is best. --Sumi Hahn

This is a great book to find advice about serving size and eating schedules and what foods to feed at what age. This can be an overwhelming book, but if you just take the parts of the book that you need when you need them, it's very helpful and helps to save ALOT of money. I do not follow everything, but I do what I feel is best for my baby with this and other books as a reference. As a reference, it is wonderful. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-20 07:26:56 EST)

I love this book, it answers all my questions. All I do is ask my pediatrition and she ALWAYS gives me the Okay. Not to mention that I feel so good giving my children the best of the best. I have even started growing my own ORGANIC VEGETABLE garden with the help of my entire family. THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much Ruth, your advice and guidance is unparalleled.

A must for new parents, this book will improve the way the entire family looks at nutrition. Many questions answered for first time mothers and fathers, on when to introduce new foods, what foods are the most nutritious, and how to prepare them.

I found this book mostly good, but its written in a very scatterbrained way. It constantly makes reference to other pages and chapters, lacking basic cohesion. Because of this it was difficult for me to read, and I had to read the book in its entirity before using its information. It also had some ideas different from mine, such as introducing nuts so early. On the other hand, it was indeed chock full of useful information, for instance, the author would gush about the endless uses of plastic bags (!). The best thing about the book was her Super Porridge recipe and we use it all the time, so that alone was worth the cost of the book to me. Overall, I agree with other reviewers that a slightly less superior attitude, more organization, a discussion r.e. obviously controversial food intruductions in the appropriate areas, and less overall wordiness would make this book more of a stand out.

This book is about more than food. This book is the product of an amazingly frenzied maternal mind. Yes, there is a recipe in here for play dough made with lint gathered from your dryer. Amazing!! How can you not love that. There are so many other tidbits in this crazy delightful creation. Sure, it is also outdated--definitely check with doctors re: what to introduce when. No nuts before 2 I would say, to be on the safe side. Other reviewers have mentioned this of course.

I purchased this book on recommendation of my sister-in-laws who have all used it. I work full-time out of the home, continue to pump and nurse my baby, and desire to feed him as nutriciously and healthy as possible.
First off, the book is a jumbled mess. This woman appears to have no editor, and poor self-editing techniques. She includes so much information in such a poor format that it literally took me a month of reading and a stack of posty-notes before I had organized it the way I found it to be the most user-friendly. Upon the advice of several other women, I tabbed the areas I would need, and forgot about the rest. The advice on when to start the certain foods, how to pick and cook them, and the section on super porridge are all I really use. I have "Baby Wised" my baby, and therefore do not agree that a child needs to be nursing 6 times a day, eating three full means, and eating snacks at 9 months old! That is ridiculous, and my son would never eat that much! He is at a healthy, chubby weight, and only nurses three times a day, two of which are combined with a food serving. The point is, the book is good, but it isn't the Bible. Take the advice you need, and leave the rest (such as serving Peanut Butter before 1 year old!). My son hates jarred food, but I do try to serve it to him at least once a week for the occasional emergency that may arrise (i.e. flying out of town for a family death and didn't have the time or means to carry 4 days worth of frozen food with me). Added bonus: While I'm purchasing and cooking fresh veggies for baby to eat, I've started to make more for hubby and I to eat! We've both become more healthy because we are feeding are baby homemade foods! :) (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-30 00:33:52 EST)

This woman is a crazy lunatic. As a professional chef, her recipes do not make sense, hard to follow, and she has complicated recipes that could be easy, and yummy. She is a paranoid woman trying to make us paranoid like her. Do Not Buy this book. You will find yourself getting angry, just at the sight of this book.

This book has great info on what to feed your baby and when. It gives all the basics, rice cereal, fruts, vegetables - then goes into another layer of detail, adding beans, nuts and seeds. The super baby porridge is ok, but as a full time working mom I can't see making it every few days, and it stores poorly.
It has many recipes for toddlers as well, snacks, meals, how much etc. What was disappointing to me, is it seems to skip right over the older baby-early toddler phase when babies are ready for finger foods, but not yet able to bite off pieces, or parents are sensitive to potential allergies. Overall, its a great book - in fact this is my second copy, I purchased it for my son's childcare provider who just had another baby herself. Yay for no more canned baby food! As a first time mother I like this book as a reference. However, the author's approach to preparing food and caring for children in general is quite daunting! As my friend phrased it, "You may feel the need to climb inside your sterilized refrigerator to make your baby's food!" I was recommended this book and would say that it is a good overview, especially the itemized section describing methods for dealing with many fruits and vegetables. You just may want to supplement it with another, less paranoid resource.

It's an OK book...but the steps described when making baby food are very tedious. Moreover, there is some paranoia going on...I am not going to use a straw to suck the last little bit of air out of a freezer bag before sticking it in the freezer. Just press and zip. I think this book is making baby food at home much more complicated than it needs to be. However, there was some good advice as to when to introduce which food and what to look out for when shopping for produce. Not my favorite, but it's OK.

I borrowed this book from a friend (who uses this book like the bible) and I was sure I needed to order my own copy with in 10 minutes of flipping thru the pages... great book with great advice.. I will use this book daily I'm sure, and my baby isn't even old enough for the foods yet!

this book is great for recipes and to have a general guideline as what you can introduce each month. the author tells you to feed your 9 month old baby 3 meals a day plus snacks, which i have to disagree with. i breastfeed and that much food would interfere with the amount of breastmilk the baby would normally consume.

If you are curious about proper nutrition for you child, here you go. Great book. Did not find out about it until my child was 12 months and wish I had found it sooner. Teaches you so much about proper nutrition and about how to make a lot of food, freeze it and then not having to worry about it. More time for you and baby.

I really like this book. Once you learn how to read it, it's very useful.
That's right. You have to learn to read it. One big problem is that the layout is terrible! You will constantly find yourself jumping from page to page, chapter to chapter. Ruth also doesn't make much mention of nut allergies when she recommends nut butters and the such before the American Academy of Pediatrics does. She mentions it at the very (wordy) beginning and then rarely after that. The book offers up a healthy menu option for each month of your child's life. For those of us who are pretty confused as to what to feed our kids when, this is especially useful. She also shows you how to cook foods that commercially fed babies usually don't get the chance to try: like brown rice, barley, avocado, ect. In all, this book would be better if the unnecessary wording was edited out and the layout made more appealing. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-04-19 04:12:52 EST)

My favorite part of this book is the list of fruits and veggies -- how to select, freeze, puree, etc. I referenced that many times daily with my first child. It also helped me learned to cook my own baby food, which turned out not to be that difficult, really quite fun, and made me feel good that I was serving my baby healthy food. Also, more cost-effective than buying jars. After awhile, I noticed the tips on activities as well. BUT, I wouldn't use it as a bible -- she suggests some things that go against current thinking, like serving nuts earlier than a pediatrician would recommend. And, she is a bit long-winded in alot of the book -- she could get her point across more succinctly. Of course, looking at the length of my review, I probably could take my own advice! Anyway, good book if you are interested in making your own baby food, but keep learning outside this book as well.

Not a bad book for getting your head around food for your baby. This is a good book to start reading as soon as you can rather than waiting for your baby to be started on solid food. Very educational.

I received "Super Baby Food" book from my sister-in-law, and let me tell you, it was so helpful! Great tips on how to make natural baby food that is healthy, nutritious and delicious for your baby, non-toxic and safe ways to clean your house, keep nasty insects away, projects you and your child can do together, and more! My daugther is four years old now and I still consult the Super Baby Food book! A keeper!

Even if I saw this book recommended in Baby Bargains, I didn't buy it after reading 4 star reviews in Amazon. Also, I had access to local library with Annabel Karmel's books. I thought that'd suffice my needs for baby food recipes.
Now my baby's 1 year old, I wanted to look for more venues for my toddler's recipes. I got this book today and skimmed through it and it has so much information more than just preparing baby food, I was astonished. I wish I had this book earlier! It says lead is contained in the ink that's used in printed material like newspaper inserts and magazines. Whether that's true or not, if I had known that, I wouldn't have let my baby eat some of the papers while she was playing with it. And I also didn't know there was lead in the paint that's used on plastic bags, either! How shocking! Besides, the information on baby's nutritions by ingredients is very helpful by giving quick insights what kind of food is good and what not. I sorely regret I didn't get this book earlier. Hopefully, I'll do better for my second born. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-27 12:57:37 EST)

I bought this book on the advice of a couple of mom's before I researched other books. I found it to be overwhelming to read because the author is all over the place. It is 560 pages before the bibliography and appendix without any color coding and no color pictures. It covers a lot, almost too much, and is not organized in a user friendly manner. I can't imagine any working mom of an infant with enough time to make good use of this book. THE BIGGEST DOWNSIDE: last copyrighted in 1998! For updates and corrections to the book, you are directed to the website [...] which I have not yet bothered to visit, but if you are thinking about buying this book, you may as well just go to the website. I also did not notice any endorsements from pediatricians or nutritionists. I believe there are many other books out there that are just as informative (actually more informative with more up to date information), easier, and more enjoyable to read. I recently got Naturally Delicous Meals for Baby which I like and wish I would have had when my baby was about 5 months old. From reading reviews, it looks like there are many other good ones out there too.

I didn't realize before I bought this book that it was for vegetarian babies. Some of the suggestions are outside the ordinary. If you are not a vegetarian or do not desire your infant to be one, then another book is likely better. it has good info on what vitamins are in what fruit and veg and gives a good idea of portions and the range of things that you should feed your baby. The month by month suggestions are helpful. There is an overemphasis on what the author calls Super Porridge. Many infants grow out of the desire to eat so much cereal. I would supplement this book with another.

I got this book just before I started feeding my daughter solids at 6 months old. I showed the introduction food chart to her pediatrician and she agreed with it (in fact, thought is was a great idea.) I very much enjoyed making my own food and it only took a couple nights a week (I usually did it afer she went to bed at night) to make the purees I needed. Highly recommend!

I'm a health conscious mom and "save money" mom and this book does both!! I have personally compared to buying jars and making their food (which is from the produce) and it is definitely cheaper to make. For one jar of baby food, I can make 5-6 amounts of the same from the produce at the grocery store.
I buy this book for all my relatives and friends that have newborns and even toddlers. This book goes from feeding at 6 months (introducing solids) through snacks and meals for toddlers that they'll eat!! It gives you month to month of what to introduce to your baby in order to avoid allergies to foods. I've had 2 kids and my sister has had 4. We've used this book for all of them. The kids have never been on antibiotics or been to the doctor sick for treatment. The book is everything you need to know to have your baby/child nutritional fed and kept well. In the world we live in today, it is unusual for kids 5 years old and younger to never have had an antibiotic in their lifetime and counting. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-16 16:45:38 EST)

This book is a must have for any first time mom. I found all the information and timetables so helpful. I had no idea what to do when my son started on solid food and unless my friend had loaned me this book I would have just bought baby food, but making your own is so easy and so much less expensive! I felt better for my son's nutrition as well, knowing exactly what he was getting and when he should get it.

I don't have a baby, but my cousin (mother of three) says that this book is one of her absolute favorite books, and has changed the way she sees food entirely. It gave her the motivation to make her own baby food, everyday. Her daughter (now almost two), has NEVER eaten pre-packaged, artificial or preservative-ridden food! But more importantly, she has NEVER gotten sick - no colds, no flues, no nothing - I think this is amazing! I have now given this book as baby shower gifts several times, along with mini food precessors. When I have a child I will absolutely make all my baby food from scratch!

This is the second time I bought this book. I bought it when my first daughter was a baby (she's now five). I must have lent it out to someone, but it was such a great reference that I bought it again for our second daughter who is just starting to eat solid food. I love the month-by-month ideas for what to introduce and there is just a ton of other useful info about what, how, and when to feed your baby. And if you don't want to pay for commerical baby food, there are great ideas and tips for making your own baby food.

This book is an awesome resource. So many ideas! Very helpful if you are a first time mom and need to know when to add which foods to your child's diet. Great for anyone who wants to know some tips for buying produce. Great for moms who need healthy snack ideas and thoughts on getting a toddler to eat right. Craft ideas, nutrition, making and storing your own babyfood! This book has it ALL.
The format and indexing are not the most intuitive, but it is worth the hassle getting to know the sections. My book automatically opens to the healthy pancake and waffle recipes! My kids are now 6 and 8 and I am STILL using this book. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-19 10:31:50 EST)

This book could be about 200 pages less then it is. It is full of nonsensical tips and things that have nothing to do with baby food. I just now picked up the book to refer to while writing this and opened it up to a page where the author has spent two pages on "cake tips" how to grease a pan, how to keep it from drying out and help it stay moist, oh, and frosting tips too! WHAT THE HELL DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH BABY FOOD??? She just goes on and on...
The saving grace of this book is that it gives EXCELLENT information about each individual food: what to look for when buying, preparation, best cooking method, as well as directions on how to microwave, boil, bake, and steam, how best to store, and freeze each food, how old baby must be for the food (which I question some of her standards on this. Asking Dr. is best on this matter)and wheather or not you need to worry about nitrates. I just use it as a reference now and only look up the food I am cooking and refer to that page. It also gives good tips on how to freeze large quantities of food. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-14 20:11:40 EST)

Ruth Yaron isn't a doctor. This is painfully obvious by the way she recommends peanut butter at 10 months. The tone is condescending. There are several better books. Be sure to check the credentials before you buy the book!

This book is a good resource if you are trying to figure out how to introduce solid foods. I use only two sections: one that gives you a month by month program of what to start your baby on and one that provides specific information on foods. I think I could probably get all this information on the internet or other cheaper sources and probably would not buy the book again if I found myself without it.
There are extensive sections on how to make cute cakes and other things that are not baby-related. I have food allergies and am very careful with what and how I feed my daughter. I expected more information about starting solid foods and food allergies, but didn't find what I was looking for. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-12 07:34:48 EST)

I read through a lot of the other reviews and was very nervous about the negativity from othe readers, but as a new Mum I was suggested to get this book by my Pediatrician. I hoped that as a SAHM I would have the necessary time and dedication to read the book thoroughly and hopefully make sense of it. But, it appears that even with more time this book is very confusing, I found that if you start at the first chapter and attempt to read all the way though you are constantly being referred to different sections and you end up having to jump about from section to section in the book. I had so many pages turned down to know which sections had been read and that I had to go back to, I lost track of where I was.
I asked my Pediatrician which foods my daughter could NOT have till certain ages and found a lot of inconsistencies with what the author suggested. I ended up creating a spreadsheet of all the foods the author recommended at certain ages and then cross referenced this with what my Pediatrician said, then I had to go back to the book and make a note of the correct age that I will be allowed to offer the said food from. I understand that I am a first time Mum, but I am not stupid and this author seemed to write this book for stupid people. Come on... I really don't think you need to write about how to shut a zip-lock bag and get the air out by sucking on a straw in the corner! I wanted to be thorough about feeding my baby, which meant I had to read all through this kind of drivvle to get to the relevant stuff about feeding my baby. I have skipped the whole section on Arts & Crafts as this is my baby's food book, if I had wanted a section on Arts & Crafts I would have brought and Arts & Crafts book. It is a shame this section couldn't have been used for more receipes or useful information about food. My last concern was that I was a number of chapters in until I found that this is a vegetarian cook-book. I know that the author added an area on meat at the request of readers, but this IS a vegetarian cook-book with an after thought on meat. I want meat to eventually be part of my baby's diet, I am not a Tofu or Soy eater myself and I don't believe I am going to make my baby into one either. I am now finding out more thorough information / recipes for meat in babies diets. If I had to do this all over again I would not purchase this book, even though it is recommended by Pediatricians and has been on TV shows as the one most parents purchase. I have been feeding my daughter homemade baby food for 2 months and I was at the point where I didn't know what to introduce next to her. The doctors had told me a few things but she had been eating those foods. I read about this book in another wonderful book, BABY BARGAINS, which helped us register.
I received the book a few days ago and just love that it tells me month-by-month what Paige can eat. It tells me how to select the foods (especially if it's a food I've never prepared!), store, help to ripen, prepare and freeze. It's a bit over the top in some parts, like boiling your baby's water. We live in a large suburb and she's had our tap water since she was 7 weeks old in her formula. I'm not boiling her water! Overall, this is a great go-to guide to help you prepare your baby some yummy food! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-08 02:59:22 EST)

I just bought this book for the second time. It was the food Bible for my seven-year-old twins, but I finally passed on my dog-eared copy a few years ago. Now, I have a ten-month old, and I needed to re-read this definitive guide on nutrition. This exhaustive guide is picture-light but information-rich. Use this book for its menus and recipes, its month-by-month food introduction guide, its food preparation and nutritional listings or the step-by-step instructions on making your own baby food. I used this guide for my twins and it really is easy to make your own baby food. While I still aspire to the four-color photos of spinach/yam pinwheel snails in other baby cookbooks, this one gives you recipes and nutritional advice for the real world of baby-rearing. Love it -- and I am not a vegetarian.

I made baby food for both my children with the recipes in this book. From cereal, to their first solids, I found these recipes, and techniques so helpful. I recommend this to every new mom I know. I cannot imagine how much money we saved by making our own, instead of buying jars. Not to mention the health benefits, and the fact that both my babies loved the food!

I can't recommend this book highly enough. I have used it almost every day since my daughter was four months old (she's now fourteen months). My family and friends marvel at the fact that she has NEVER been sick since she was born -- no colds, no earaches, nada, and that's even through times when I was sick. She has also never been constipated, has very rarely had diaper rash, and, best of all, loves to eat super-healthy foods, which is a habit that I believe will remain with her throughout her entire life. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. (Oh, and by feeding your baby this way, you'll save a lot of money too!)

I wish I had gotten this with my first son. It is so comprehensive its amazing. With suggestions as to what foods to introduce first (and why) and examples of amounts that babies and toddlers might be able to eat it really eased my mind with my second son. It also explains why not to introduce certain foods until a certain age has been reached. This book has helped me expand my children's food choices (both the almost 9 month old and the 3 year old). I am more confident that they are eating healthier using this book as a guide.

This is a great read for parents looking to make their own baby food and more! I pick up this book at least 2 times a week for reference. More so it has made making baby food a pure joy and I feel great about what I am doing for my little one. A great gift for friends who share in the joy of making their own baby food.

A lot of people are writing about the flaws in this book, but I simply don't think any of them stand up. In the book there are many cautions about nuts, dairy, soy, and nitrates (which seem to be the main complaint) and Ruth clearly states many times that her information was right for the time, but that new information is always available and to go with your pediatrician's recommendations.
That being said, I'd also like to refute the FIRST commentor's issue of the 'good 'ol days' of tofu by saying that Ruth DOES say it's not sanitary, and THAT'S WHY SHE LIKES THE NEW PACKAGING! I feel that Ruth is covering 'all the bases' and leaving it up to the consumer to decide what they want and don't want to do. If you don't like dessicated liver powder, then don't use it. If you're worried about nitrates, don't feed them high-risk foods. If your pediatrician says 'no dairy or nuts!', then don't feed them dairy or nuts! (A side note about nuts, it is usually PEANUTS that children are allergic too, which Ruth notes, and not other nuts). I feel that any negative comments about this book are simply the product of someone not reading it front to back. Yes, it's a lot to read. However, you're learning how to feed your baby natural, nutritional foods from the start and since most people don't know how to do that, there's a lot to learn. There are dangers with any foods you choose to feed your child, and she makes sure you are informed about all of them. One thing I'd like to say, though, is that protein complementarity is still a valid theory, however it has now been found that you do NOT need to eat the rice with the beans (or whichever combination you use). As long as you eat these foods within the same day, your body will still be able to make complete proteins. I found this out after looking up 'protein complementarity' on Google and reading a revision of the book she sited that idea from. This book is simply amazing and really challenges you to think about what you're feeding your children. Even if you don't follow her diet to the letter, it is still a great book to use to learn about how to make foods, how to clean your house safely, and make lots of fun arts and crafts. The only thing I'd say you MUST do is read the ENTIRE book before getting started. As you can see from other comments, if you haven't read the whole book, you really don't have the whole story. This book is great IMHO on preparing home made foods and gives lists of allergy foods to beware of...however, as you read the book if you don't referrence the allergy pages, then you would assume she suggests feeding those foods early on, it's an easy mistake and IMHO could have been written better, but if you don't already know these things, you shouldn't be raising children (and probably aren't buying a book on home made healthy foods...you're probably at McD's ordering a happy meal) If you referrence those allergy pages, you would realized she does know nuts and various foods should not be introduced early, especially if there is a history of allergies in the family. I agree with others that it's confusing if you're completely unaware & there are too many 'extra' words in the book, but those that can find the 'meat n potatos' of the book and skip the 'fluff' it's an excellent book! :)

There are some good ideas in this book to consider. However, I cannot stress enough to do NOTHING without first talking with your baby's doctor. I went ahead with some of the food recommendations for a baby's certain age given in the book and almost ended up with a disaster. I gave my child egg at 10 1/2 months and she wound up in the emergency room with severe anaphylaxis. The doctor said this should never have been tried until at the least 15 months. He also said never give a child peanuts or anything with peanuts in it until at least 3 years of age. He also said I very likely sensitized my child to eggs for life because of introducing it too early. I know the author warns of food allergies in very fine print, but please discuss with your doctor the foods she lists in the boxes "INTRODUCE THESE FOODS TO YOUR (xyz)MONTH OLD" first.

Excellent book, teaches you everything you wanted to know about baby food and more! In the back of the book it gives you recipes for making your own cleaning products that are safe around the baby. I actually started to make them.

I haven't had the time to read it through yet. But so far it's got the level to details that I want to follow. Still a bit intimidated, but am taking baby steps (ie, clearing out space in my freezer for the ice cube trays for freezing baby food) to do this for my baby.
