Word 2007 For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))

Just another dummy book. This one is okay I guess, but not as good as the others that I have read. Too much of the goofy stuff that is really not needed, even for dummies......unless you are really into goofy reading material. I like a little humor in anything, but less would have been more in this one!

This is such a great book. You really can be a dummy and you will still learn everything you need to know about WORD. Ditto for Dan Gookin's book on PCs for Dummies. Mr. Gookin's books are extremely well organized and excellently written, but the thing I love most about them is the humor. They really are funny and that is a big boon to the reader, especially one who dreads dry instruction. I read this book cover to cover and it has saved me hours of pain at the computer.

I just switched to Word 2007. I found that the terms for commands had changed so that I had to read the whole book in order to find what I wanted because I could not always find the term I was familiar with in the index. The book does cover most of what is needed in order to use Word 2007. I can't fault the writers for the changes that Microsoft made in their belief that they were making the program simpler to use.

It doesn't answer the nasty pagination problem I encountered. Word would stop numbering pages after a couple in a file, go back to the previous page and renumber it incorrectly, then not number the ones after it consecutively just keep placing the same number on each page, etc. There appears to be no way to number pages except in headers or footers either, as far as WORD FOR DUMMIES indicates, as best I can tell. There were one or two other places WORD FOR DUMMIES turned out to be clueless, too; but it's better than nada. Word is vastly inferior word processing software. WordPerfect is much better. Writers I know despise Word, and curse having to use it because publishing adopted it as the standard for submissions. It is a shame it was adopted so widely, apparently by executives in companies who were sold a bill of goods about it by Microsoft, when they would never have to actually use it. Pretty typical executive behavior--making decisions about various office systems their underlings will have to use without actual facts.

This is a very straightforward book on Word 2007. Very easy to navigate and read. I learned a lot from it.

The book is exactly what it is! If you have word, get this. O.K., don't use your real name when buying it. Don't let the "Dummies" intiminate you. It is very helpful, having neat little tips that you would't normally find. I have found that an instruction manual should be written for the person with the lowest level of experience as possible. This is the one.

As usual, this book tells me everything I need to know about Word 2007. It's easy to read and understand. If you want to get full use of your product, don't hesitate to get this book.

I'm a big fan of the Dummies series; the information is usually complete and explained well. The Word 2007 volume, however, is nothing but fluff. The writer explains the features of Word 2007 by using words like "thing" and "stuff". The banter is usually tolerable (or easy to skip over) in the Dummies series, but this book has so much of it that it's no surprise there is no room for explaining new features such as the new interface, particularly the ribbon. The writer says the ribbon can't be modified. That's not true. Reading this book is like eating cotton candy.

I have had to use Word for dummies at least a dozen times and there does not seem to be question that the book can not answer.

Why has Microsoft fixed what wasn't broken? Word 2003 was fine "as is," and this newest version largely a confusion. Word 2007 For Dummies simply confirms that the cure is worse than the illness, and though this book may help tech-savy users, the rest of us are left where we were found, in the dark.

I read this book cover to cover with the heavy use of a highlighter. I can only conclude the author is seriously unfamiliar with the featured product. Microsoft puffs the idea of the new "ribbon" approach to Word which the author all but ignors apart from a brief mention. The idea of adding PDF and XPS features gets less than cursory mention. Use the new Microsoft Upgrade to publish Blogs and Webpages directly? The author discourages this practice and recommends using a seperate software program. Therefore; if the author all but ignores the new features of this program, is it not fair to conclude he simply did a cut and paste from one of his previous "Dummy Books"? There is absolutely nothing in this book you couldn't know from having used "Microsoft Word 97". Don't waste your money or highlighter efforts on this worthless tomb.

I suppose that you'd be inteested in this book for one of two reasons.

First, you're a newcommer to Word and want to be hand held from the beginning to get started. I suppose that there must be at least a few people out there who don't know Word - Well, my mother doesn't, but she's not likely to read this book anyway.

Second, and I suspect most of us fit into this category, we've been using Word for a lot of years, but at a fairly rudimentary level. We do memos and paper, maybe we even write a book. We don't do anything very fancy, just word processing.

Now though, there's a new version of Word - Word 2007. It is worth spending the bucks on? What does it have that I might find useful? And I don't want to just see the Microsoft hype, I want a bit more than that. So here for twenty bucks or so is not only a description of what's new, but how to use it.

As best I can tell, the biggest change in Word 2007 in in its user interface. There's a new look on the screen called the ribbon. This seems to replace all the various toolbars and the like from previous versions with a new layout that puts the bulk of the Word commands you use only one click away. (The existing File button is replaced by an 'Office' button.) Furthermore, the Ribbon appears to be a dynamic thing. As you are doing something different, for example charting, a different set of frequently used commands appear in the Ribbon.

The formatting and fonts area is changed a bunch. The Help area is redone somewhat supposedly to make it easier.

There are the usual Rick Tennant cartoons. My favorite is the lady being forced by airport secutity to remove the bullets from her Word document.
