WOW! This is the best guide for Pokemon Diamond and Pearl by FAR! It's not just a Pokedex, but rather much more! It not only contains information on 490 Pokemon, (Yes, 490, unfortunatly it lacks total information on Darkrai, Shaymin, and Arceus) but it also has CRUCIAL information about what to do after you've beaten the Pokemon League. Up to that point, it's all easy, just go along with the story. BUT once you've beaten the Pokemon League, everything in the game suddenly becomes unclear. You might KNOW there's more legendaries to catch, but you might not know where. (For Example, I had not the First Clue about going to Turnback Cave for Giratina, but when I got the guide, It led me straight there!) You might KNOW about the Battle Tower, but not who the Tower Tycoon is and when you battle him. You might KNOW about Cresselia and Fullmoon Island, but not how to get there or what to do once you've seen Cresselia. You might KNOW about Pokemon, but not at what exact level they evolve, or what exact level they learn a specific move, or if they learn it at all. All this is CRUCIAL information that you will find EXCLUSIVELY in this guide. And that's not it, either. In case you don't know which region a Pokemon is from, there is a Table of Contents in Alphabetical order at the VERY BEGINNING, making it extremely easy to find pokemon. Also, a 2 page map containing all of Sinnoh as well as the names of all the cities and places of interest. Also tells you all of the items you may find in a certain place, AND information on EVERY ROUTE AND CAVE about things you can do there BEFORE AND AFTER beating the Pokemon League, again, more CRUCIAL information EXCLUSIVE to this guide. And again, there's more-you can find information on EVERY HM and TM in the back of this book, as well as all the contest moves, items, where to get every TM, where to get each item, and a Pokemon Weakness easy look-up chart with the weaknesses AND RESISTANCES of all 490 pokemon, (yes, remember? 490...Arceus, Darkrai, and Shaymin were unknown when this guide was released) and information about where to capture any Pokemon in the Pal Park, with a detailed map of it, and how rare they will be, aka how much time it will take to catch them, prizes at the Pal Park, etc. ALL CRUCIAL INFORMATION. Also tells you where to catch ANY pokemon in the game, (as long as you CAN catch it) INCLUDING what route for Pokeradar, and descriptions to every pokemon from both Diamond and Pearl. Also a comparison of the few pokemon you can't catch in Diamond, and of the few you can't catch in pearl, as well as the list of the 50 pokemon you can not catch in Sinnoh at all, (Previous starters and legendaries, event pokemon, with a FEW unexpected ones; Tropius and Tangela...) a berrydex, all pokemon abilities and what they do, pokemon personalities, natures, what wild pokemon hold what item, A TON of information on the Underground, and that's just the Pokemon Data Lookup section of the book! There's still the Capture Guide, which is about 2 times as thick, and the Post-Game Scenario! This book is a MUST For Diamond and Pearl Fans!

At first when I bought this I thought it was going to just sit around, but as my son played through Pokemon Diamond he started referring to it more and more. The best description of it now is "very worn".

The fact that every pokemon is listed along with where it can be obtained is its best selling point. The book is really geared for after you've completed the game portion and are working on "catching them all".

You could probably find all of the information in this book online, but not in one location. Having it there to refer to while playing is easily worth the cost.

Even as a mother I can get into Star Wars, Bionicles, dinosaurs, and other hobbies of my 7-year old son, however, I can't say that I enjoy Pokemon. But noone can deny that the over the decade-old Pokemon craze is here to stay as witnessed by the phenomenal success of Diamond and Pearl. My son refers to this book like a bible and Pokemon Diamond is the only DS game that he hasn't grown tired of even though he's had it almost a year.

The guide is perfect. It's the second half of the walkthrough guide that Prima offers, but this is really just a Pokedex. I really like it because it has all the pokemon in it, with their stats, what time the evolve at( or what you have to do to get them to evolve) and where to find them. It even has maps of the areas you are traveling to, so in a way it is a walkthrough itself. Oh, it even says what pokemon are found in Diamond/Pearl, so you won't be running around trying to find a specific pokemon. I would highly recommend getting this guide if you want to get the most out of this game.

I bought this for my 10 year old son. He's had the Vol.1 book since getting Pearl in May 2007. This book, Vol.2, completes the reference set. If you (or your kid) are someone who makes it their business to study every little nuance of Pokemon evolution and gameplay (and seem able to recall it all virtually verbatim), this is an absolutely essential addition to your library. Gotta have it!

Wow! What a complete pokedex! My 7 year old son enjoys reading this book. I don't understand it, but he does! He said it gives information on 490 pokemon. It also tells what fighting attacks they can use for the pokemon games. The only pokemon missing from this guide are the 3 newest ones (#491,492,& 493).

My 8 year old son is a Pokemon addict. We have Diamond, Pearl, Emerald and several other DS games related to Pokemon. Don't even ask me about Pokemon Battle for the Wii. Because most of his friends are also addicted, we give this book as a gift for most birthdays. Finally, my son got a copy and he loves it. It gives descriptions of all the Pokemon and their talents. According to my son, it is a must have. According to me, if it gets my son to read, it is a must have.

The book is good but it doesn't say anything about Floaroma Town there are arrows pointing to it with captions saying Floaroma town this way. Another thing I didn't like was that they don't show you the inside of the buildings. I liked that they give you info on which rod to use on which Pokemon. I also like the way it shows you the way the Pokemon looks from a back view.

I wanted this guide because I accidentally bought the first Diamond and Pearl Prima guide, and I want them to correspond sort of. I am glad I did because this book was perfect for what I wanted.

First, lets look at the down side. My only problem was the fact that they did not show where to catch the pokemon from Firered/ Leafgreen and Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald. Also, the many typos are a little distracting, but when it comes to Pokemon, I've seen way worse.

When it comes to the Pokedex, It was very detailed, and showed all of the info most people would need to either catch all the Pokemon, or to build a strong and well rounded team. One thing I would have liked was the full numerical value of each stat, and which Pokemon give you what EVs, but I'm fine with looking it up occasionally on the internet. When it comes to catching all the Pokemon, this guide leaves out nothing. It has a detailed guide on how to get all the Pokemon, whether it means catching them from the wild normally or using the PokeRadar or Fishing rod. It also has a post elite four guide that shows all of the extra legendaries and how to deal with them. At the end of the guide it has many detailed charts on contests, attacks, berries, and items found in the underground.

This book satisfied me entirely when it comes to the pokedex and where to catch all the Pokemon. The other charts and tips are also handy. This book is perfect people either new to Pokemon, or old. This guide will help you with future games as well.

Personally, I think the division of the guide into two was a money making strategy that annoys me. However, the quality of the guide is beyond excellent for the price I paid. I have detailed information on all pokemone, updated for this version, where and how to obtain them, and how to finish the quests leftover from the first guide. It details the battle tower, capturing the actual legendary pokemon, as well as the three psychic spirits.

I highly recommend this guide!

This Sinnoh Pokedex is quite helpful, and I've found there to be a really good release of walk-throughs for the new Diamond and Pearl games. This Volume 2 of the previous Scenario Guide tells you all about which Pokemon you can get in Sinnoh. Theres Mass outbreaks, Pokeradar, and those that show up when you stick one of the GBA games into the slot below. Not only that, but there is a bunch of extra information that could help if you're a die-hard fan to complete the dex and where to find the Legendaries like Cresselia.

All in all, if you want to really complete these games then it might be good to get this.

Bought this book in combination with Pokemon Pocket Pokedex (Prima Official Game Guide) for my son's 10th birthday - he is Pokemon crazy. We never see him after school - he's up in his room planning "catching" strategies. Be aware - this book has the newest Pokemon, but is strictly Diamond and Pearl strategy. You will need an Pokedex designed for the older games (like Pokemon Pocket Pokedex (Prima Official Game Guide) or Pokemon 10th Anniversary Pokedex (Prima Official Game Guide) unless you are playing the newest games.

I bought this book as, whilst still being a fan of the pokemon games, I haven't been watching the anime, and don't get the time to play the games as much as I would like to, and needed to know a little about all these new pokemon in order to work out my best strategy for beating the game.
The book gives a comprehensive guide to all the pokemon within the series and so is a must have if, like me, you are looking at all these new pokemon and thinking 'what on earth are they?'
It has detailed listings of all the moves each pokemon can learn and when they learn them, however it doesn't list where to find them. However I bought the first book, the pokemon strategy guide, which does detail this. I thought that, well the makers of the book are going to want to get as muh money out of us as consumers as possible and so they won't put everything into one book. This, I have just accepted, and found that the books, when referenced together are highly useful in completing the game.

The one gripe that I would have with this book is the blatent fact that it has not been proof-read. There are many typo's and mistakes in the book, some more major then others, but if you can overlook these they are not important to the usefulness of the book.

Another useful point of the book is, while the pokemon are in, of course, national pokedex order, meaning that evolutionary chains to not neccesarily follow on from each other, there is a handy liust in the front of the book, telling you which page each pokemon can be found on.

Overall the book is worth getting if you need to know more about each pokemon, their types, and what they can do, but if you would rather find this out throughout the course of the game, it may not be as useful.

Only minus is the relatively common typos that are found in this book that would be absent in the official Nintendo book. However, this book has A LOT more information and is presented in what I feel to be a visually appealing way.

Ex. of one of the typos: in one ALPHABETICAL chart, Marowak is written as Warowak so its position in the chart moves.

Since Pokémon Diamond and Pearl came out I was always referencing Online Pokédexs, which became difficult if someone else was on the computer, so after reading another User review I got this book. I was amazed at the detail in this book. Being a long term player I wanted more that just a walk through. This book has level up moves, HM and TM moves and Egg moves for 490 Pokémon. The reference charts at the back are a nice touch, one can look up Egg groups, moves, item locations, item uses, Natures and Characteristics, underground items and a few other bits of information.

The only thing bad I will say about this book is that it is paperback which will get a little damaged when you are referencing pages often. On the Pokédex pages they have neglected the Pokémon species (eg Bulbasaur the Seed Pokémon is missing for the Bulbasaur information). There are a few typos here and there (Pokémon DX- Whirlwind of darkeness). But the main annoying thing is that Pokemon 491 Darkrai, 492 Shaymin and 493 Arceus are not included in this book.

I do recommend for people to buy this book as it is a very good reference book. I have been playing Pokémon since the days of Red and Blue and this is the best paper Pokédex on the market now

It has all the pokemon, but it goes by their numbers in numerical order; so, it takes a little effort to find them, but if you know their regions it will be easier locating them. It has maps of a few places and routes. It tells you where to find all the items and where to finds all the HMs and TMs. It tells you where to find all the berries, but it does not tell you where certain important buildings are, like the Move Tutor. All and all, it is good.

I really enjoyed this pokedex vs. the nintendo version. Sure, some things repeat themselves, as others have said, but I've found that, for the most part, they belong in more than one catagory and should be repeated for first time players or those who aren't proficient at the game. It's easy to read and use and even my 8 and 5 year old boys love it and use it. I'd recommend this pokedex over nintendo's anyday.

(Hide Review...)  the better pokedex compared to Nintendo Power's version
Reviewer Permalink
Initially, I bought the Ninento Power Pokedex because I thought it would be a safer bet to go with the 1st party guide. However, even without comparing that pokedex to this version, Prima's, I was unhappy with it.

Both the Prima and Nintendo pokedexes are designed as a 2nd book to the walkthru books. Some of the comments of those guides mention that they don't go to the later parts of the game (after beating the Elite 4). Those parts are addressed here. However, I did not focus on the guide as I really just wanted a Pokedex reference.

Nintendo Pokedex:
2 pokemon per page vertically arranged
large size picture of pokemon
basic stat info
icon image (w/ male/female versions if needed)
evolution path (text only)
list of moves showing: number, name, category, type, contest, AP

Prima Pokedex:
2 pokemon per page horizontally arranged
medium size picture of pokemon
basic stat info
icon image - front AND back (w/ male/female versions if needed)
evolution path W/ images and text
list of moves showing: number, name, type, class, power, ACC, PP, ranges, DA (direct attack)
black footprint and relative size to trainer image
text description from both Diamond and Pearl... nice
how to obtain the pokemon right on the page... CRITICAL, imo.

Just based on that, you can see that Prima put a lot more information per page on the pokemon... Yes, some of it is fluff but, imo, a pokedex should be a reference. And for true pokemon fans, that fluff is very nice. Having how the descriptions differ from Pearl and Diamond is interesting especially if you have only one version of the game. It just seems like Prima put that extra effort into this.

Some comments regarding the Nintendo Pokedex:
1. The list of pokedex in the front is based on Pokemon number and not alphabetically. (There is a alphabetic list in the back pages.)
2. The attacks listed w/ the pokemon do not show Attack, ACC, and PP. Instead, you need to flip to the back to look them up in the charts unless you have memorized them... I haven't nor do I plan to.
3. How to get the pokemon is not as well laid out. You have to reference either the Game Guide (volume 1) or use the back of the pullout poster/map.

Basically, Nintendo's pokedex really makes you work to get the info and is very clearly designed to reference the game guide.

Some comments regarding the Prima pokedex:
1. Table of Contents is Alphabetically arranged.
2. List of moves/attacks are better organized and available right on the pokemon page. (There are reference charts/lists in the back of the book as well.)
3. Sinnoh map is a 2 page layout - I prefer this over the pullout poster from the Nintendo pokedex b/c it's easier to use.
4. Lots of little interesting information like all the Pokemon arranged in boxes (as in the game) to show what it would be like if you did, indeed, Catch Them All.
5. Pull out poster of all the Pokemon images.
6. Unown pokemon... Prima's shows all the different Unowns.

So, as a reference, the Prima Pokedex is definitely more convenient to use. Also, the Tips sections in the Prima guide is much more in depth (eg Capture Guide). This is not that big a deal to me but, if you're interested in that, it's there.

--
Finally, if you need a pokedex for the previous pokemon games, I suggest Prima's 10th Anniversary Pokedex if you can still find it. Nicely put together (in some ways better than this pokedex). Only problem I had with that pokedex was that it didn't have the names of the Pokemon in the evolution path. In the few cases where the immediately following pokemon wasn't the next evolution step, I had to start flipping pages to find it. It also has a very nice list of how to get the pokemon in previous pokemon games (GC, GBA). By the way, Prima, if you're reading this, go back to the spider web chart for the power of the pokemon used in the 10th anniversary pokedex... much better visually to see how strong the pokemon are than a bar chart.

So, as a reference, the Prima Pokedex is definitely more convenient to use. Also, the Tips sections in the Prima guide is much more in depth (eg Capture Guide). This is not that big a deal to me but, if you're interested in that, it's there.

Wow! This is an amazing book!!! I think it helped a lot! The strategy guide is very precise and I knew exactly what to do! I'm really glad they wrote it like a Poke'mon for dummies kind of book because many people who have already been playing this game for years might already know these strategies, but newcomers still need info!! I thought that both volumes that Prima made are a perfect collection to beating Poke'mon Diamond and Pearl!! BUY THEM 'CAUSE THEY HELP A TON! Oh, and people who say that Prima guides are full of empty space should consider over 600 pages (including both volumes) of info, a lot. And, besides, since I am a visual learner, all of those pictures really help!

This guide has the pokedex that i needed, all the locations of all the pokemon, this guide wont tell you how to complete the story mode, but if your interested in obtaining all the pokemon, this guide is a must. Detailed item locations this guide does a good job of letting you know were and how to get all the pokemon that you want. Get this guide to give you the extra pokemon that you need.

What I have to praise about this product is not what it has so much as what other published guides have been missing. Specifically, the previous Diamond and Pearl guide from this same publisher was missing a lot of information regarding pokemon that previous guides about previous pokemon games had included, such as pokemon statistics and move lists.

With so many new pokemon in the latest games, and the new wi-fi battle network, not to mention Pokemon Battle Revolution coming for the Wii in the US in late June, anyone who wants to be competitive would benefit greatly from this guide.

Finally, this guide has one more thing the previous guide lacks, and that's any information at all about what to do in Pokemon Diamond/Pearl after becoming Pokemon Champion. Even casual pokemon players, therefore, have a use for this guide.

If you have something against Prima, Nintendo has a similar guide that may not have a poster, but is a dollar cheaper and may be more accurate. I haven't seen the Nintendo version of the guide yet, however.

I just got this guide and have been reading through it and it is full of typos and duplicate sections. For example, a minor detail, p.385 has a list of tips on creating strong pokemon and tip one and two have the same section heading (although completely different content). An example of missing information can be found in page 412, where one section says:

"Runaways
To prevent them from feeling (sic), use moves like Mean Look, Block, and Shadow tag right away."

The section right below it, "Use the Marking Map" has the exact same description.

While I haven't found anything incorrect yet, it seems like there was absolutely no editing. It is hard to trust the accuracy of the information in here if basic proofreading wasn't even done on it. I don't know what the Official Nintendo guide is like, but it must be better than this, plus its cheaper.
