After reading the Army of darkness Re-Animator crossover I was a little leery about giving this cross over a try. However I was very pleasantly surprised to see just how wrong I was.
This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. Here we find our hero Ash from the Evil dead trilogy thrust into a variation of the Marvel Universe where a zombie plague has begun infecting the planet. Ash believes that the dreaded Necronomicon, if it exists in this strange world of caped weirdos, is the key to setting things right. Initially considered a looney by the most of the the heroes of the Marvel universe, he quickly becomes the key player of the entire book. Unlike some of the other stories that have been done, Ash's character- is kept untainted-esp with the witty remarks- and believable w/o the unnecessary use of popular lines from Army of Darkness over and over again. The same goes for the inhabitants of the marvel universe. In an interesting twist Ash convinces the Necronomicon to join forces with him to preserve both of their existences by creating an army of the dead to battle the zombified heroes. What happens? I'm not gonna tell ya except to say if you skip this book you are doomed to miss a great thing. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-11 01:48:46 EST)

This ha-ha, nudge-nudge, wink-wink crossover between the newly minted "Marvel Zombies" franchise and the older, darker "Evil Dead" series has its moments, but overall I found it only so-so. I loved "Evil Dead 2" and even, to a lesser extent, the other movies in the series. Seeing it adapted for the comicbook medium is less satisfying -- if you're not actually looking at Bruce Campbell the actor playing the character of Ash, it just ain't the same. The real payoff comes on the Marvel side of the fence -- this book shows us (from Ash's perspective) what happened when the zombie virus hit Earth, and how Earth's Mightiest all got infected. There is much splattering and chomping and Dr. Doom makes a last stand for humanity. Overall, this book is okay, and it compliments the other books in the series, but the series-crossover comedic schtick does get in the way most of the time. I'd rather have seen a straight-up story about Marvel Zombies: Ground Zero, or whatever.

Ash meets the Marvel Zombie Universe and pretty much lets them destroy themselves, he's just along for the ride, as he passes through their dimension.
This is a fun read, but really has no memorable moments. The art, however, is great! I'm always disappointed by comics that have great cover art but lame interiors, but this was a pleasant surprise. I haven't been interested in any other Marvel Zombie books, but the AOD factor was enough to make me pick this one up. Buy it if you like pointless crossovers. ***Warning, A little bit of spoiler info in the review
I liked Marvel Zombies, I thought it was a really cool idea that deserved my attention. And I love Army of Darkness (Evil Dead 2) a lot. I thought the cross would be double fun. However, I found myself being a little disappointed in the end. The art was fantastic, but the whole story felt a little cheesy (which I do understand is what makes AoD good) and unfinished with very little explanation as to how the virus even found its way to earth. There were even parts of the story where you can really tell the authors ran out of ideas and just started taking short cuts and making crap up. For instance: the part where Ash needed a diversion to get to the ship to make it to Doom's castle and the zombie children were in the way. The authors just made up a team of somebodies as a diversion then said they were brutal taken out off page. I laughed pretty hard, but realized this was just part of the easy way out mentality of the authors. If I had started reading this story with no expectations I probably would have liked it a lot more. But I read Marvel Zombies first, then this one, so I expected a better back story and a little more serious storyline with Ash's off humor as an added bonus. If I could do it over again I would have read this one first then Marvel Zombies, I think I would have found the 2 graphic novels much better in that order. The original Marvel Zombies miniseries was clever, and built on the storyline begun in Ultimate Fantastic Four. This mini-series just continues the gorefest without adding anything new to the Marvel aspect. The inclusion of Ash was somewhat intriguing at first, but everyone reading this story knows nothing will happen to him. We also know every Marvel character will end up dead. I bought this book because my son enjoys the Zombie storyline, and is a big fan of "Army of Darkness". I suppose the best thing to say about this story is that it is better to have read it than to wonder if it is any good. Sadly, the ending takes that away, as well.

I bought this as a Christmas present for a friend after I failed to find the original Marvel Zombies and ended up reading through it myself. I think I might have liked it more than he did. The story is well written, and despite the horrifying subject there are still a few pretty funny moments. The art is really good. If you like Evil Dead or Marvel, even a litte bit, I think you should buy this.

Okay. Enough is enough...take a cool, interesting concept where Spiderman, Colonel America, The Hulk, The X-men and all the rest of the Marvel Super-heroes turn into zombies (Marvel Zombies), then add in Evil Dead II's Ash Williams and you've got a campy cash-in on two cult classics, right?
WRONG! Evil Dead II + Marvel Zombies = a prequel to the latter that turns out to be an enjoyable hour of time that surpasses a heck of a lot of the silly movies in the genre that I've sat through in recent times. Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness is an exceptionally well-done tale of what would happen in parallel universe where some of our favorite super-heroes co-exist with Ash from The Evil Dead movies. What happens? Well, our super-heroes turned zombies encounter a whole lotta boomstick, that's what happens. This story is extremely well-written, but the creator of Marvel Zombies is reduced to a consulting role and it shows a bit. But it certainly doesn't come between a super-hero sized good time. Although, I'd definitely recommend checking out Kirkman's Marvel Zombies release before delving into this prequel. (Kirkman is also the creator of the awesome Walking Dead series.) Do you like zombie flicks? Do you enjoy the Marvel super-hero stories? Did you like Evil Dead II? Yes? Then Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness is an excellent, quick read, prequel that you'd be remiss to deprive yourself of. Check it out. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-22 07:03:04 EST)

The biggest comic event of 2007 is here! No, I'm not talking about the lackluster wimpy end to Marvel's Civil War, and we all know nobody cares about DC's lame weakly event 52; it's Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness! One of the sleeper hits of last year, the five issue mini-series published by Marvel Comics; Marvel Zombies came out of nowhere and blew both horror and spandex wearing comic fans away.
Written by comic zombie guru Robert Kirkman with art by the critically acclaimed Sean Phillips; Marvel Zombies expanded upon a plotline developed by writer Mark Millar in issues #21-23 of Ultimate Fantastic Four. With all types of alternate realities spun out of the real Marvel Universe like the Ultimate universe, New Universe and wherever the hell Squadron Supreme came from, Millar decided to create another universe; one populated by superhero zombies. While Millar's three issue storyline hinted at the possibility of such a world, it was Kirkman's mini series that established it as fact; well, comic book continuity based fact. Kirkman's mini-series, as glorious and unbelievably brilliant as it was never exposed the origin of the zombie outbreak. Its stated that the Marvel version of Superman, the Sentry, was the first to succumb to the infection. But with panels featuring everything from Captain America touching his exposed brain, to a horde of zombies chowing down on Galactus, few complained. But for those few dorks still wondering about the virus' origin, pick up Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness to find out that everyone's favorite hapless, one handed hero might be the one to blame. Ash arrives in the alternate Marvel Universe the day of the original zombie outbreak. Writer John Layman does a great job with the bravado exuding Ash and displays a decent knowledge of the Marvel characters. While the art is not as polished as Sean Phillips on the original series, Fabiano Neves does a great job of capturing the classic Marvel look while maintaining an edgy quality. Anyone questioning the validity of these two creators need look no further than the third to last page featuring a great shot of Marvel hero Hawkeye chowing down on a headfull of brains to feel secure in forking over the asking price. With a third printing of the hardcover collection on the way, along with a proposed second miniseries and another crossover with the Ultimate Universe; 2007 is set to be the year of the Marvel Zombie. Hollywood has already expressed interest in the project and with Marvel heading up their own studio; a feature film is a small but splendid possibility. Plus be on the look out for a Marvel Zombies action figure line later this year and a deluxe statue featuring a undead Spider-Man and a very dead Mary Jane. If nothing else reels you in, issue #2 of gMarvel Zombies vs. Army of Darknessh promises to feature fan-favorite disco superhero Dazzler fighting a zombified Howard the Duck, for that alone Ifve gotta make mine Marvel! Zombies that is. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-14 06:57:13 EST)

Let's be serious...the Marvel Zombies series, no matter how much you enjoy it, will probably not win any noteworthy awards. Do NOT let that stop you from enjoying this latest entry in the series.
A quick de-brief if you're unfamiliar with the concept: alternate Marvel universe, zombie plague, superhero zombies eat population. I STRONGLY encourage reading Marvel Zombies before reading Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness. Just sayin'. So, Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness acts as more of a prequel to the orginial Marvel Zombies miniseries. Ash, the hero of the movie "Army of Darkness", winds up transported by evil forces to the alternate Marvel reality...right about the same time the zombie plague began. Talk about timing. Ash encounters several superheroes and villains as he tries to figure out what started the plague and how to stop it. Plot: Here's where reading the original series comes in (and I'm not really spoiling anything for you here)...every hero and villain is either killed is some beautifully grotesque fashion or becomes a zombie. Or both. But, like they say, it's all about the journey, not the destination. Half the fun is watching the events unfold. Art: Beautiful art, right down to the bones jutting out of the undead's rib cages. This is NOT a book for children. It's a tongue-in-cheek look at "What If The Marvel Heroes & Villains You Grew Up With...Became Vile, Flesh-Eating Zombies?" Bottom line: Adults who like zombie movies and Marvel will enjoy this book. If you haven't seen it, rent Army of Darkness before you read this book (though it's not required). A great addition to a franchise that I hope continues to grow like an undead horde. Taking the already off beat idea of what would happen if a zombie plague appeared a world of super heroes, this book throws another idea into the mix: Add Ash from the Evil Dead series of movies!
If you are familiar with The Evil Dead, then you are already aware of how sarcastic and funny Ash, the hero, can be. Now, Ash finds himself in a world overrun by heroes with a craving for living, human flesh. He takes this in stride, just fine, like Ash always does- because hes got the trusty boomstick. This is a good follow up read for those who have already read Marvel Zombies. The Marvel Zombies vs Army of Darkness uses a universe similar to that of the first book, although the storyline is different in some key ways- some characters whom were already zombified in the first book, and therefore didn't receive much face time, now have some more time to live and so events unfold in a different manner. This book is told from the viewpoint of those who are still human, facing super powered zombies. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-14 06:57:13 EST)

In Marvel Zombies, we saw what happens when a little undead interaction comes between super friends and foes alike. In Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness, we see what a little chainsaw-on-flesh eater can make. Here we find Ash, a little Necronomicon interaction, a baglady gone really bad, and some other unmentionables compiled into something that runs parallel to the zombie crisis but also stands on its own. The things added are good, really good, and ruining them would be a terrible thing. So forgive the vagueness in the plotline response when I add "it really is good stuff despite what the title might make one think."
When I first saw the listing for this, I didn't know what to think and can say I was frightened by it. Crossovers can go really bad really quick, and I figured throwing Ash into a melee would basically equal an increase in carnage and a decrease in story. I picked up the first and that lead to a second and, before long, I needed to have them all under the graphic novel roof. John Layman had proved that wrong, and had done it by keeping the good and the bizarre that I loved in Marvel Zombies while adding in some new stuff. Basically, it added in Ashley J. Williams and all the Deadite wonders of the world plus some faces I didn't expect. That means gore, comedy, and a trip down the brain-eating isle. Man, I really love that isle. If you liked Marvel Zombies, this builds pieces of it and even explains missing parts. Even the one-shot didn't go all the way to the beginning, but this adds in a lot of the "how." Fans of the Evil Dead franchise will like what the team accomplishes here, and people who didn't really like the concept can equally find happiness in this undead superpowered utopia. You have to love it those win/win situations. If you didn't check out Marvel Zombies, check it out and pick up "0" to add to that part of the story. Then get this and enjoy watching it unwind. I'm quite leary of inter-company crossovers, so I approached this with some caution. Robert Kirkman's Marvel Zombies ended up being a surprise smash hit, hence this crossover with Dynamite Entertainment's Army of Darkness license. For anyone who hasn't seen the Evil Dead movies, Army of Darkness was the third film in the trilogy, in which are favorite chainsaw and shotgun wielding, one-liner spewing hero Ash took on evil deadites. Marvel Zombies VS Army of Darkness finds Ash transported to the Marvel universe at the beginning of the zombie outbreak, and soon enough he's up to his head with the hungry, super-powered undead. Before you can say boomstick, Ash teams up with buxom heroines Dazzler and the Scarlet Witch to track down the Necronomicon and solve the whole mess, the only problem is that the book resides in the library of Doctor Doom; and there's a horde of undead superheroes in the middle. With careful supervision from Kirkman, writer John Layman manages to have an absolute blast weaving this oftenly funny tale. The artwork from Fabiano Neves and regular Army of Darkness artist Fernando Blanco is more than solid, and the gore scenes are well done as well. If you dug the original Marvel Zombies and love the Evil Dead movies, you'll get a lot of enjoyment out of Marvel Zombies VS Army of Darkness. There's blood, babes, zombies, and more excellent Arthur Suydam covers, so it's a win-win situation for everyone involved.

A very enjoyable diversion into the (undead) Marvel Universe, Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness serves as a wild ride for the readers. Taking the characters we know and love, Layman, Neves, and Chung delivers them on a blood-soaked platter where the courage and strength of the heroes (and villains) fall to their undying hunger for living flesh.
How can B-Movie hero Ash stand against the hordes of super-powered undead? What (if any) potential allies remain on the dead planet? Read on only if you dare!!! For a fun trip chock full of zombie gore and mayhem, this GN is a must have for fans. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-10-02 14:44:26 EST)

The undead superheroes are back in this prequel to the successful limited series MARVEL ZOMBIES, and this time Ash, zombie-fighter supreme from Sam Raimi's EVIL DEAD films, is along for the ride. Author John Layman (HOUSE OF M: FANTASTIC FOUR/IRONMAN) and illustrator Fabiano Neves (ANT MAN) transports the reader back to the beginning days of the zombie outbreak to bare witness to unspeakable horrors of our beloved Marvel universe gone mad. See an infected and blood crazed Spider-man devouring Mary Jane's internal organs while pleading to his Aunt May to lock herself in the bathroom--but we know that a plywood door can not stop a man with the proportional strength of a spider. As the heroes massacre and freed on all in sight, it is up to Ash, who still trying to wrap his head around a world were people dress up in tights and capes, to liberate the Book of the Dead from the fortress of Dr. Doom to stop the zombie plague. MARVEL ZOMBIES / ARMY OF DARKNESS is a fun read with great characterizations and many twist and turns along the way. If you enjoyed the fist series and comic collections like Zombie Factory, then this blood-stained book is for you! (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-10-02 14:44:26 EST)

Well, you just know that the Marvel Zombies -- undead variations on Marvel's standard superhero theme, all conveniently set in a parallel universe that is exactly like the usual Marvel Universe in nearly every way ... except for the fact that all the major heroes have turned into zombies and are eating everyone.
Enter Ash Williams, the cult-classic zombie fighter from the "Evil Dead/Army of Darkness" series of films. In this stand-alone book, Ash arrives in New York right at the outbreak of undeadedness and puts his trusty chainsaw and shotgun to work. Of course, Ash isn't used to battling zombies who dress in bright costumes and have superpowers to boot. The Marvel Zombies had their birth from the fertile mind of writer Mark Millar and artist Greg Land, who were teammates then on the "Ultimate Fantastic Four" series. Robert Kirkman and Sean Phillips picked up the ball and ran with it in the followup story, "Marvel Zombies." Now, John Layman and Fabiano Neves have it well in hand, as the ruggedly handsome Ash (based on the square jaw of actor Bruce Campbell) faces down the rotting Avengers and other key players from Marvel's roster of heroes. It's fun, it's a little kooky and it's a whole lot grotesque. And even characters who don't rank high on my Marvel radar -- such as Punisher and Howard the Duck -- make memorable apperances here. I'm not sure how long Marvel can prolong its Zombie line, but as long as they keep churning out with this kind of quality, I'll keep reading. If you haven't jumped on the bandwagon, please do. But eat first. by Tom Knapp, Rambles.NET editor (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-09-26 21:19:40 EST)
