Twilight

"Softly he brushed my cheek, then held my face between his marble hands. ''Be very still,'' he whispered, as if I wasn''t already frozen. Slowly, never moving his eyes from mine, he leaned toward me. Then abruptly, but very gently, he rested his cold cheek against the hollow at the base of my throat." As Shakespeare knew, love burns high when thwarted by obstacles. In Twilight, an exquisite fantasy by Stephenie Meyer, readers discover a pair of lovers who are supremely star-crossed. Bella adores beautiful Edward, and he returns her love. But Edward is having a hard time controlling the blood lust she arouses in him, because--he''s a vampire. At any moment, the intensity of their passion could drive him to kill her, and he agonizes over the danger. But, Bella would rather be dead than part from Edward, so she risks her life to stay near him, and the novel burns with the erotic tension of their dangerous and necessarily chaste relationship.Meyer has achieved quite a feat by making this scenario completely human and believable. She begins with a familiar YA premise (the new kid in school), and lulls us into thinking this will be just another realistic young adult novel. Bella has come to the small town of Forks on the gloomy Olympic Peninsula to be with her father. At school, she wonders about a group of five remarkably beautiful teens, who sit together in the cafeteria but never eat. As she grows to know, and then love, Edward, she learns their secret. They are all rescued vampires, part of a family headed by saintly Carlisle, who has inspired them to renounce human prey. For Edward''s sake they welcome Bella, but when a roving group of tracker vampires fixates on her, the family is drawn into a desperate pursuit to protect the fragile human in their midst. The precision and delicacy of Meyer''s writing lifts this wonderful novel beyond the limitations of the horror genre to a place among the best of YA fiction.(Ages 12 and up)

10 Second Interview: A Few Words with Stephenie Meyer

Q: Were you a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Angel? What are you watching now that those shows are off the air?
A: I have never seen an entire episode of Buffy or Angel. While I was writing Twilight, I let my older sister read along chapter by chapter. She's a huge Buffy fan and she kept trying to get me to watch, but I was afraid it would mess up my vision of the vampire world so I never did.

I don't have a ton of time for TV, and my kids get rowdy when I have on "mommy shows," but I do have a secret fondness for reality shows (the good ones, at least in my opinion). I always TiVo Survivor, The Amazing Race, and America's Next Top Model.

Q: What inspired you to write Twilight? Is this the beginning of a series? Why write for teens?
A: Twilight was inspired by a very vivid dream, which is fairly faithfully transcribed as chapter thirteen of the book. There are sequels on the way--I'm hard at work editing book two (tentatively titled New Moon) right now, and book three is waiting in line for its turn.
I didn't mean to write for teens--I didn't mean to write for anyone but myself, so I had an audience of one twenty-nine year old (and later one thirty-one year old when my sister started reading). I think the reason that I ended up with a book for teens is because high school is such a compelling time period--it gives you some of your worst scars and some of your most exhilarating memories. It's a fascinating place: old enough to feel truly adult, old enough to make decisions that affect the rest of your life, old enough to fall in love, yet, at the same time too young (in most cases) to be free to make a lot of those decisions without someone else's approval. There's a lot of scope for a novel in that.

Q: What is your favorite vampire story? Fave vampire movie?
A: I guess my favorite vampire story would be The Vampire Lestat, by Anne Rice, simply because it's one of the only ones I've ever read. I keep meaning to pick up Bram Stoker's Dracula, because I get asked this question so often and I should probably start with the classics, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Again, I'm afraid to read other vampire books now, for fear of finding things either too similar, or too different from my own vampire world.

Ack! I can't even answer the movie question. I can't remember ever seeing a single vampire movie, outside of clips from Bela Lugosi movies on TV. I don't like true horror movies--my favorite scary movies are all Hitchcock's.

Q: What other young adult authors do you read?
A: My favorite young adult author is L.M. Montgomery I also enjoy J.K. Rowling (but who doesn't?), and Ann Brashares. As a teen, I skipped straight to adult books (lots of sci-fi and Jane Austen), so I'm rediscovering the world of teen literature now.

Q&A with Stephanie Meyer

Q: What book has had the most significant impact on your life?
A: The book with the most significant impact on my life is The Book of Mormon. The book with the most significant impact on my life as a writer is probably Speaker for the Dead, by Orson Scott Card, with Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier coming in as a close second.

Q: You are stranded on a desert island with only one book, one CD, and one DVD--what are they?
A: The CD is easy: Absolution by Muse, hands down. It's harder to give myself just one movie, but the one I watch most frequently is Sense and Sensibility--the one with the screenplay by Emma Thompson. One book is impossible. I'd have to have Pride and Prejudice, but I couldn't live without something by Orson Scott Card and a nice, thick Maeve Binchy, too.

Q: What is the worst lie you've ever told?
A: My lies are all very, very boring: "No, you really look great in hot pink!" "My children only watch one hour of TV a day." "I didn't eat the last Swiss Cake Roll--it must have been one of the kids." That's the best I've got.

Q: Describe the perfect writing environment.
A: It's late at night and the house is silent, but I'm still (miraculously) full of energy. I have my headphones in and I'm listened to a mix of Muse, Coldplay, Travis, My Chemical Romance, and The All-American Rejects. Beside me is a fabulous, and yet mysteriously low in calorie, cheesecake....

Q: If you could write your own epitaph, what would it say?
A: I'd like it to say that I really tried at the important things. I was never perfect at any of them, but I honestly tried to be a great mom, a loving wife, a good daughter, and a true friend. Under that, I'd want a list of my favorite Simpsons quotes.

Q: Who is the one person living or dead that you would like to have dinner with?
A: I'd love to have a chance to talk to Orson Scott Card--I have a million questions for him. Mostly things like, "How do you come up with this stuff?!" But, if he wasn't available, I'd settle for Matthew Bellamy (lead singer of Muse).

Q: If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
A: I'd want something offensive, rather than defensive. Like shooting fireballs from my hands. That way, you're really open to going either way--hero or villain. I like to have choices.

Twilight, unmistakably one of the best books I have ever read. It sucks you in from chapter one and never lets go. Stephenie Meyers reaches out to her readers with prose and promise beyond expectations. The captivating story of Bella Swan, a normal teenage girl, and Edward Cullen, a perpetually seventeen year old vampire, tells a story as thought provoking and painstaking as Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. This is truly the first book in my life I had to force myself to stop reading. Twilight was so good that I read it and the other three books that follow in the saga, in two short weeks! The characters were so well written that I found myself relating to them even while not reading. This is one of four books I will find myself reading time and time again. I developed a relationship with Bella and Edward and will come back to read them often. I give this book two thumbs up, just beware; once you start reading it, you will have trouble putting the book down!

This is the first out of 4 books. It will get you hooked for sure. This is a book that you can not stop reading you want to read on and find out more. You wont be able to put it down. If you love romance and action this is the book for you. It is not a horror book at all. The vampires are friendly and are not out to kill humans.

I thought that this would be just another teenage girls fantasy romance, but it has much more to it then that. If you are looking for love in all the worng places "Twlight" is for you. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes vampires and to those who are helpless romantics.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SERIES!!!! I have completely and totally fell in love with EDWARD and all of the characters of this series. It will make you laugh, cry, sad, scared, excited, worried, feel adored, and all of the above. I have never felt this way about a series of books in my life. After it was done I felt empty as if I just broke up with a boyfriend or something. A co-worker and I were reading them at the same time and we both just have felt lost. We need more.... She and I have been looking and can't find anything that comes close to the experience of reading this series. And she has read thousands of books. I hope that Stephanie Meyer doesn't leave her fans out there too long waiting for the next phenomenal series to start. We MISS EDWARD!!! (and Bell too)This is a MUST READ!!! If you don't enjoy this book you are insane!!!!

I was kind of hesitant to buy the book due to all the fuss, and having been a reader of the Anne Rice's Vamire Chronicles I was afraid I would be disappointed. I was not. This is young adult fiction to be sure but it was fun, and was not just a rehash of the same old vampire myths. It is first love but with a vampire. It does lack the richness of Anne Rice's writing but it was fun and entertaing which is why I read fiction.

So, OK, I read that this series was as popular with tweens and teens as the Potter books. I read the first one.
Won't read the rest [though will probably go see the movie based on Twilight.] I've been around too many teens and too many tweens for way too long to be able to feel comfortable with the characterization of the protagonist. She may be in love, but I've not yet had the honor of meeting a girl that willing to endure pain and distancing from her peers. . . even though she is a LONER. [Her individuality is played up nicely, but the 9,000 or so I've known over the past 50 years, usually aren't as individualistic as they think.] She turns away from a loving father, a new place to live with new friends etc., and that is understandable given her non-prefrontal lobe development and age of 17, but to accept the physical and mental pain and stress is more than I can accommodate. I don't recommend this one. The writing seems a bit unpolished as well. Though I did like the imaginative details and set up of the vampires.

Twilight is a fascinating love story between an ordinary human girl and a beautiful vampire. While not a member of the target YA audience, I found myself caught up in the intensity of the feelings of the two young lovers and the obstacles in their way. Many critics have complained that Edward is a stalker and Bella is whiny, but that's looking at the story very superficially. In the Meyerverse, vampires have very intense emotions and fall in love only once. Edward is not so much a stalker, as very overprotective, especially after he realizes Bella is a danger magnet. Bella is fiercely independent, and a caretaker. She worries (excessively) about putting others in danger because of her. She is also shy and clumsy, which makes her hate being the focus of attention. I loved the romance, and the secondary characters are also extremely interesting (I'm looking at you Alice). This is a fresh look at vampire mythology wrapped around an impossible love story.

Teenager Bella moves to live with her father (her parents are divorced) to Washington state. She attends school there and meets Edward. At first he acts like he hates her but then they become attracted to each other. The problem is that Edward is a vampire. Can a vampire and human be lovers?

I'm not the prime audience for this book. I'm a guy in his 40s. I just picked it up because I heard the movie was coming out in December. Also I'm a big fan of vampire books (Anne Rice is an exception) and well-written romances. "Twilight" is a well-written, interesting and engrossing combo of horror and romance. That's tricky to pull off but author Meyers manages to do it. Despite the length this book reads quickly (it just took me a week or two--and I only read it occasionally). Meyers pulls you right into her world. Meyers gives us a strong and totally believable teenage girl in Bella. Also Edward and his family are presented in a matter of fact way. A story like this could easily become ridiculous but I never once found it stupid or unbelievable. It's hard to describe it, but this book sort of puts a sort of spell over you. You can't stop reading. I highly recommend this--even if you're not a teenage girl.

My daughter expressed a deep interest in these books so I took one with me on a biz trip to preview. I would not say that I was disapointed, I knew it was TL in the first place, but I was really surprised at how week the main character was portrayed. She takes no responsibility for herself or her own emotions, relying instead on others to lift her up and to make her circumstances more bearable. She is further portrayed as klutzy, accident prone with low self-esteem and instead of the author developing Bella's strengths, it seems she focuses on developing her dependence on a boyfriend, again to solve her problems for her and save her from herself.

I discussed a few of these topics with my daughter but urged her to read it for herself. She thought it would have been a brilliant story, had Bella become a stronger person too, instead of resigning herself to whatever fate (joy with boyfriend, doom without) doled out for her. Sparkly Vampires??? This one had us both in stitches.....

Amazing. The book was so different from what i expected it to be. I hesitated at first to read it, because who wants to read a book on vampires falling in love? But i swear, it is honestly something completely different from what you think. Twlight brought tears to my eyes, because who doesnt want to be loved unconditionally? It was so freaking romantic, daring, and had a twist at the end, making it a thriller as well. I can't explain how much a good job meyer's does, you just have to read it yourself.

*Stephenie Meyer, if you ever read this, which i highly doubt, PLEASE please please please write midnight sun!!!*

I kept wondering "what the heck is the Twilight hooplah all about?" Everywhere I looked I kept hearing about this book, the series, the upcomming movie and Stephanie Meyer. One of my good friends online, who has similiar reading tastes, finished reading Twilight a few months back so I decided to read the book before the movie was released. I had an Amazon gift card and figured "why not get it, it's not like you paid for it."
Yesterday, I purchased the remaining 3 books before finishing Twilight, which I completed last night. I am a 30 years old African American who found Twilight simply AMAZING! I absoutely loved the story, the characters, but most importanty the emotional connection between Edward and Bella often made me lose my breath. I appreciate the fact that the series is geared towards young adults and deals with heavy emotions that do not automatically become sexual. I cannot tell you how many times Edward's character moved me, made me breathless, or swoon with just a few simple words. I thought the book was well-written for its age group but can be more apprecciated by adults at the same time. In a nutshell, I am debating about waiting for my Amzaon order or just going out and buying New Moon today becuase I cannot wait for the shipment!! Everyone is entitiled to their own opinions, but in my opinion Twilight is right up there with the Harry Potter series and I am so glad I did NOT listen to others reviews and simply read the book for myself.

I walked into the bookstore and they had Twilight saga books EVEYWHERE. There really seemed to be a buzz about this book. The store was about to close and I wanted to pick up a book. I just grabbed it without thinking and began reading as soon as I got home. I finished the book in 1 weekend (which is pretty fast, being so busy w/3 kids, a business, full time job etc.). Honestly, since the book was on display in the middle of the bookstore, I didn't realize it was Young Adult book until sometime into the first chapter. With all the hype the book wasn't as excellent as I thought it would be. Then again, I was expecting an adult's book. I expected something a bit darker and edgier. There were a few chapters that seemed to drag, and the book lacked twists in story lines. It's a bit predictable. But i actually enjoyed the book. The love and affection that Edward and Bella have for each other is very sweet and endearing. It's refreshing. It's a light read and enjoyable enough. Like watching a tv series, I feel like I want to watch the next episode -I'm buying book 2 tonight.

I picked this up on the way to the airport. I didn't anticipate loving it to the point of rising at 5am on Day One of vacation so I could finish it before the festivities got started!

I felt completely swept in the action and the descriptions and writing. I'm amazed to read that others couldn't form a picture. Poor souls. I feel Meyers captured the wild and erratic teenage heart wonderfully. I didn't break it down into a feminine mystique treatise and so - I thoroughly enjoyed it!

An added bonus is I feel 100% comfortable sending a copy to my 15 year old god-daughter. Unlike her real world it's not fraught with sex - the actual monsoon of emotions get tons of exploration. We both love to read and with the exception of Carl Hiaasen, I find so little in YA that can appeal to both of us.

I'm going to the store to buy two copies of all the other books available as I'm certain my discerning god-daughter will love these books, too. BTW, I'm heading to Barnes and Noble because I only come to Amazon to read the descriptions - their repeatedly horrid customer service (including egregious screw-ups regarding my credit card and banking info) has driven my actual dollars elsewhere.

*I saw someone making fun of 'glittering vampires' and I have to say it stuck in my mind in a wholly different way. How creative! What an interesting spin on a tale that's been told again and again with little in the way of change. I LOVE the glittering! Bravo Stephanie!

This is one of my favorite book! It is more of a love story then it is anything else. The way Stephenie Meyer explains the story,(in Bella's perspective) you actually feel like you are Bella, you get mad at what she gets made at, fall in love with the same person, and hate the same way. Stephenie Meyer is one of my favorite authors. I was hooked on Twilight after the first couple of pages. Twilight is about a younge seventeen year old who has moved from her mother's place, and goes to live with her dad. There she finds this, somewhat strange family, the Cullens. As the days pass by, she starts having a feeling that they are more then just strange, they're not human. As Bella befriends Edward Cullen, she learns about what he is and his family. Soon, Bella realizes that she is in love with him, and that creates a problem for Edward.
This is my most favorite book! I could read it one hundered times and not get sick of it! This is a book for anyone!

Along with similar new novels like Jennifer Anne Kogler's The Otherworldlies The Otherworldlies and of course the more established favorites (Harry Potter Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7), His Dark Materials His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass) (His Dark Materials)) there is a wealth of this type of literature out there now--not to suggest that these books are all identical or even similar necessarily, but they have commonalities in their audience and use of supernatural plot devices. The appeal of such novels is obvious not only in terms of children's/teenagers' innate desire to play out fantasies in safe, imaginary worlds but also to escape from the economic and political turmoils that we are currently facing. I personally think the prose in Stephenie Meyer's books could use some work but there is obvious appeal for the teenage audience that it's intended for, melodramatic writing and all. Of course, for the "original" high school vampire love story you cannot do better than the Buffy TV Series!!! Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Collector's Set (40 discs)

(Hide Review...)  Fun Day Read, Later Books get Better!

After much convincing on my teenage sister's part I finally read it. It's a very easy read, I think I read the whole book in about 6 hours. Partly, because it did keep my attention. Yes Bella is a bit annoying on her fragility and her constant obsession on how beautiful Edward is but if you can ignore that and get into the tension between the two characters and romance of it all it's really fun to read. The later books particularily Book 3 "Ecclipse", in my opinion is the best of the three books. After reading all four books in about 6 days, I would say don't take it too serious and remember it's a novel for the teen girl. And please!!!! who cares if it's not giving girls the best message, it's a fantasy novel!!!!

I can't believe I'm admitting this in public. Let me start by saying that I read a wide variety of books, many different genres. My one rule was that I was not going to "waste" my time reading vampire books when there were so many good books out there to read.

Chomp, chomp, chomp...that is the sound of me eating my words. A good friend who is about my age (forty something) read it and couldn't say enough good things about it. She encouraged me to read it, and I told her I didn't do vampire books. She said I really should make an exception. I usually like what she likes, so I was curious. I decided if I came across the book, I might try it. Then, the 16 year old daughter of a friend of mine started singing it's praises. She said it was "the best book ever!" Now this teenager reads several books a week, so I thought that was quite a recommendation she was giving it.

SO, I was curious about a vampire book that could attract both age groups. Amazon had a good price on it, so I bought it. I'm now admitting in public that I couldn't put it down, and even stayed up late more than one night just to find out what happened next.

I glanced at the first review on Amazon where the person is saying how awful it is for teenagers to read. Get a grip, it is fiction. Like the Harry Potter books, be glad your kid is reading. If your child plays video games and hasn't turned out to be a monster, I doubt reading this book would turn them into a character like any in this book, even Bella, a love struck teenager.

Highly recommend!

I really liked the book, but often found myself questioning it. The romance between Edward and Bella developes so quickly that it seems superficial, and sickening.

I was extremely surprised when I finished this book. At first I thought it would be too young since it was written for young adults/teens, but the story kept me in suspense to the end. I am now on the 4th book of this saga and am waiting in anticipation for the movie.

I picked up this book on the recommendation of my room mate, who like me is a die hard Buffy fan. I'm pretty much a die hard sci fi/fantasy fan in general, so I expected to really enjoy this book, and for the most part I did. It was an entertaining read and I read it straight through (that is, I never put it down for more than a day). However after finishing, I find myself only mildly motivated to go read the sequels. Why? Because I like sci-fi/fantasy stories with some romance thrown in, not romance stories with some sci-fi/fantasy thrown in, and that, in a nutshell, is why this book gets only three stars from me.
It is a love story, plain and simple. Now there's nothing wrong with a fantasy novel including a love story, in fact I'd be dissapointed if it didn't, but in this case, outside of the love story there's very little to make the book interesting. I felt like I had been tricked into reading gossip girl or some other vapid rendition of teenage crushes. The story focused more on how all the guys at the school were dying to go out with Bella (which totally baffled me, as I found very little to like or relate to in Bella's character) than on the vampire theme of the story, which in my opinion should have taken center stage. For example, I would have found it a much more interesting story if Bella had set out to investigate the vampires and in the process fell in love with Edward, rather than falling in love with Edward, then finding out that he's a vampire and not caring because she's already madly in love with him. More substance please! More adventure, more conflict!
The story finally starts to get good towards the end, when Bella is targeted by a vampire tracker and the Cullen's must protect her, but that subplot wasn't nearly prominant enough to make up for the pages and pages of "omg edward's so hot". I haven't read the other books, but as people tell me they're as sappy or worse as the first one, I'll save my money.

I honestly cannot understand how this book became so popular. It is so boring and ridiculous! The story gets so fake at times that it is absolutely painful to continue reading. I definitely won't be reading the other books that follow.

(Hide Review...)  Terrible story + crappy writing = waste of time

Warning: This review contains some spoilers.

Bella is supposed to be the character you're rooting for, yet I found her boring and selfish. Her selfishness is apparent in her desire to become a vampire, which would put her in the position to potentially harm other humans. Her clumsiness was exaggerated and forced. She's so clumsy that thought of going to a high school dance frightens her, yet she isn't frightened by her vampire boyfriend. Her willingness to accept Edward and his "family" was a stretch. She was never really afraid of Edward; she accepted him with open arms. She isn't freaked out when he tells her he watches her as she sleeps (uh, creepy!). Most people I know would be hesitant to strike up a romance with someone who could kill them and has stalker-like tendencies.

I didn't like how Bella treated Mike, the human classmate who shows great interest in her, and who seems harmless (much less harmful than Edward). Edward at one point says he would hate to see Bella end up with someone like Mike or Tyler, yet these characters are, to me, very likable. Meyer doesn't portray them as snotty jock types, bullies, or other common hated high school student prototypes.

Bella has no hobbies or interests, other than Edward. Well, there is one exception -- she loves to cook. Yet she wants to become a vampire, and vampires don't eat food, so I guess she doesn't love to cook that much. Or it's just another thing she's willing to give up for Edward.

Which brings me to Edward, a short-fused, hot-headed vampire who can read minds and drives a nice car. Apparently he's hot, yet I had a hard time coming up with a picture of him in my head, as some of the other reviewers have said. Bella makes note of his beauty over and over and falls in love with him instantly. It doesn't matter that he puts her in danger.

Overall, Meyer is sending a message to teenagers: It's OK to fall in love with a hot vampire who could kill you and other humans, drop all your friends, put your family in danger, and be completely defiant toward your father. This is all OK because love is all you need. Family, friends, school, and hobbies aren't important. Developing your own self isn't important, because love is all you need. No need to think about the future (college?) and how dating a vampire will affect it.

This is a terrible book. Don't waste your time.

I think this is my new favortie book. I was a skeptic when it was recommended to me by a friend who said she was the new JK Rowling. I am also a big Anne Rice fan, but I found Twilight more enjoyable since Stephenie Meyer is a more direct author. Anne Rice sometimes gets carried away in her descriptions. Ms. Meyer put a lot of emotion into Bella in this book and the read is absolutely worth it. It is a more of a romance than anything else though, so people who do not like the mush may want to look elsewhere for their next read.

I just finished reading Twilight for the second time. I do enjoy the book, but there are many things about the book that I find annoying. Bella is not my idea of a perfect heroine. Her whole existence is contingent on Edward and I just find that depressing. I find her character very one dimensional. She's not particularly interesting, or smart, or beautiful, or funny. She's just blah. I do however enjoy the character of Edward. I love the brooding types. I mainly just relate to the all consuming love that occurs in this book. I know what it's like to be in love, and I enjoy reading love stories. So if you're looking for a fairly entertaining love story, then I would recommend this book. If you're looking for flawless writing, characters, plot, then I would not recommend this book.

This book will go on my all-time favorite list. I'm 39 and it was so good I read it in 2 days! It held my attention to the point that when it was over, I was disappointed. I've read the whole series which is also excellent, but this one is my favorite, and am looking forward to the upcoming Midnight Sun companion book which is Edward's point of view of the Twight story. Highly recomend this book to everyone of all ages!

i don't know if i already wrote a review or not but this review is a bit of an update.

i wish there were more descriptions of people in the book as opposed to just being beautiful and sparkly, or that they did more than growl.

however, i am hooked on the series. meyers is very good at weaving action and romance together. i was very impressed by the action sequences that took place.

i also enjoyed the love triangle between bella, jacob and edward. she is really quite good at suspense.

i wanted to somehow extend my sympathies for her fifth book having been leaked onto the internet. how crushing for her. i feel sad. i read it on her website because i couldn't stand it any longer, and i must admit the writing is well done and the theory itself is compelling.

i also appreciate the references to older books like wuthering heights and anne of green gables. those were wonderful ! i now look forward to the book references and music references on every page. i think i even have a list started somewhere lol.

stephanie, thank you for adding some entertainment to some of my otherwise duller evenings during the week. i will be sad once i finish breaking dawn and i will look forward to the fifth book if it is published after all.

(Hide Review...)  Story Holds Reader's Interest Despite Adolescent Dreaminess
Reviewer Permalink
This book was very enjoyable. I agree with some of the previous reviews about the author having Bella describing Edward's "absolute perfection" everytime she looks at him. That got tedious very quickly. And that brings me to a point where I disagree with those same reviews. They all complain that Bella talks like an adult and not like a teenager. While I found her dialogue and thought processes extremely adolescent. It reminded me of the over dramatization of all teenage girls about the boys they find dreamy. They swoon over them everytime the boy looks at them. They can't see any of the boys' imperfections because they are so blinded by their idolatry of them. This is Bella. If any other girl was Bella they would be annoyed as hell with Edward's constant insulting assumptions that they were somehow incapable of taking care of themselves through the most mundane daily tasks. Also his arrogance that he thinks he can tell her what she can and can't do, (and that she accepts it), is thoroughly obnoxious. Even though we know it's done out of his love for her.

And then I remember what I was like when I was a teenager, and I think about what I would have done if the boy I was over the moon about had told me he wanted me. I doubt I would have put up with any ordering around mainly because I hate being told what to do. But the constant dreamy eyed descriptions of perfection, and the ever present doubt of his feelings because your to ordinary for him are behaviors that most teenage girls could relate to. I certainly made a fool out of myself for one or two boys in my time (cringe).

I am no longer a teenage girl so those descriptions were a bit difficult for me to get through, but since I skim read most flowery descriptions anyway I was able to enjoy the rest of the story which was filled with engaging characters. The author witholds just enough information about the characters to keep you interested and wanting to keep reading to discover these secrets. I think this is an extraordinary first attempt at writing a novel and the author should be proud of her work. I hope everyone enjoys this book as I did.

(Hide Review...)  Fluffy book that provides brief escape hatch from reality!
Reviewer Permalink
OK OK OK. Bella is a complete feminists' nightmare. Edward is sparkly and brooding and not much else. Meyer's writing could use some different verbs. (My personal thorn in my side was Edward's constant "chuckling." How unsexy is a guy "chuckling?")

Anyways, if you want to read some classic lit, get out of the Young Adult section. But, if you want some fun, check out Twilight. It's a fast and compelling read. Yes, there are serious flaws with this book, but the bottom line (for me) is that I could not put it down and I immediately rushed out to get the 2nd book in the series. And, I dreamt of these characters! For some reason, they really did get under my skin.

Edward is the ultimate bad boy. He's totally fine and completely dangerous. What chick wouldn't be into that? Bella provides the perfect foil for him - she's deceptively normal, yet he cannot figure her out at all. It's the perfect set-up for a typical teenaged love story. Let's face it - teens are baffled by their own romances in real life, so this book does (in a very tiny, miniscule way) mirror the reality of a confusing first love. But I didn't read this book for reality - I read it to escape reality! And it did a good job of taking me away from Allentown and placing me squarely in Oregon.

When my daughter is old enough to read this book, I honestly do plan to talk with her about all the reasons that Bella is stupid (and there are so many) and about all the reasons why the central love relationship is way too lopsided for real life. In the meantime, though, I plan to simply have fun reading the series and leave the critiquing for others. I had a GREAT time reading this book, and if you're looking for fluffy vampire love, you'll dig it, too.

As many have already echoed, this book is very amateurish and leaves little to the imaginiation. I couldn't help but get irritated with the writing style, which was obviously aimed at teenagers. It also seemed like an homage to Anne Rice's Interview With A Vampire books, except written by a hack. If this is what it takes to get published then the literary world is in a lot of trouble. Avoid at all costs.

Twilight Collector's Edition (The Twilight Saga)

This books is wonderful. It's a great love/adventure novel between a human and a vampire (without all of the gory vampire details that you find in horror books). Once the book is started, it is so hard to put down because each page keeps you intrigued....I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an interesting story.
