The worst book I've read in a long time. A totally implausible story written in a soap-opera fashion with unrealistic characters. It would appear this book was written and published hastily in order to capitalize on past successes. She and her publisher should be ashamed of themselves.TailSpin (FBI Thriller, No. 12)

I am a long time Catherine Coulter fan although I've found her books of late to be disappointing. Perhaps it's time for her to move to stand alone's as her primary characters have become tired. The dialog is very like, book to book, though not as continually cutsey as some in the recent past, "hey and but hey" over and over for instance. This story was, overall, boring and predictable, way too long, too many characters, and while I don't expect characters in a novel to necessarily be life like, it is basically a romance after all, those in this plot weren't even slightly interesting. It seems as if she's just riding on the coattails of her long years of success and her editors as well. This plot had potential, but quickly bogged down. Along the way she took a couple of swipes at NPR which I find kind of strange because I listen to it a great deal and have always found them to bend over backward to be even handed, in direct opposition to most radio stations, or perhaps she's simply pushing her own political agenda.

(Hide Review...)  So bad...
Reviewer Permalink
This book was so bad that I had to get out of bed after I finished reading it to write this review.

The first two-thirds of the book was so slow and boring I almost put it down. Wish I had.

Then, for a moment of time, it was okay. I almost cared about the characters and the outcome.

Shortly thereafter, I wanted to ask the author if she considered working at Burger King because being an author certainly does not seem to be her area of expertise.

The plot went from dull to outlandish. The facts were distorted. (A Cessna, with a bomb on board would not simply crash land. It would be blown to smithereens and would not be survivable.)

To be honest and fair, this is the first book I've read by this author. And the last.

I purchased the book because I am a pilot, and the name/photo caught my attention. (So much for great marketing!) The write-up was intriguing. The fact that it was a best-seller, sold me.

But I've learned my lesson, for sure. Sometimes best-sellers are simply very well marketed.

Catherine Coulter's FBI series never disappoints me. Once again she has hit the heart of her writing talents with suspense, twists and a touch of romance. What I really like most is that she focuses on her characters and develops them well, so that when you are finished reading this book you are left with wanting more about them and eagerly waiting her next book. Savich and Sherlock are a dynamic pair and ones that you are always rooting for to crack the case. When reading Tailspin I couldn't put it down plus it grabbed me on the very first page. Keep writing this series Catherine and I am anxiously awaiting your next one.

(Hide Review...)  Just like every other Coulter FBI Thriller
Reviewer Permalink
I enjoyed this book. However, by the 12th book FBI book, they all start to merge together in my brain. Something bad happens to a 28 year old woman. She needs or finds a 34 year old male FBI agent to babysit and protect her. Said FBI agent calls in Savich and Sherlock (who have become stale characters, by now). Damsel in distress and FBI agent go through a great traumatic experience together and then get married. There you go, that sums up all the Catherine Coulter FBI thriller novels.

Plus, Catherine Coulter needs a new editor. Her books lack a great deal of continuity and the editing is terrible. Sherlock's real name is spelled differently in about every other book. At one time, Sherlock was a tall woman. Now, she's very petite. I guess CC never expected the first books to lead anywhere, so why bother continuing with what she had written in the first place.

Reviewer Permalink
Wow, I was really disappointed with this book. I love Catherine Coulter and I really enjoy the FBI series but I did not end this book with a smile like I have with all the previous books. I like reading romantic thrillers because you get the best of both worlds but this book didn't really provide either. Where was the romance in this book? I kept waiting for it and it never happened. The ending was disappointing as well. There was too much droning on and on. She should have spent more time developing the main characters instead of going on and on about why the bad guy did the bad thing. Since all the other books have been good, I will buy the next book when it comes out, but if it's like this one, it will be the last. If you're thinking about buying this one, don't. Check it out from the library if you really want to read it.

This book is a disaster! The flyleaf gave just enough hype to make a buyer of me -- big mistake! Makes you wonder who is reviewing these volumes - besides the publisher who has a stake in the outcome.

Little to nothing holds true to the story -- terrible dialogue, silly sidelines, plot breakdown, incorrect geographic references, less than believable character behaviour -- the list goes on and on. How on earth does a book like this actually get a publisher?! Save your bucks, guys and stick with John Grisham, Vince Flynn and Alan Folsom - and the several others of their ilk!

I loved this book. It was a page turner and kept me very interested in every word written. I always enjoy Catherine Coulter's books and this was no exception. The great dialog between the married FBI agents is the best. Throw in a few more characters, a bit of an FBI plot, some mystery and "who done it" intrigue and you have a great story that is fun and exciting to read. If you like her books and her "people", you'll love this book.
Enjoy----a perfect summer beach read.

I have read the entire FBI series and eagerly awaited Tailspin. As usual Savitch and Sherlock were superb and the storyline was good. However, I thought the story drug in places and for some reason I couldn't get into Rachael's character. There were no surprises to me. I early on figured on who was after Rachael and I also guessed early on what some indicate as a surprise at the end. I liked Jackson's character but Rachael at times seemed sort of smart mouth and you had the idea she didn't need the FBI; like she was going to take on any of the bad guys. At one point Jackson is concerned about her carrying a gun and she tells him to shut up-she can probably shoot better than him. Well he was in some special forces and then FBI and that was unlikely as was her getting out of the water after she had been tied up and a cement block tied to her. Okay it's fiction and though I rolled my eyes, I'll buy that for the sake of the story. She bothered me more when she was so lippy.

I got a little bored with all the conversations over the same thing. There is one whole chapter with Rachael walking aorund Jackson's apartment describing the walls, the floors, the decor and going through everything again. I found myself skimming some of the book and in fact put it down several times which I seldom do with one of the FBI series. IT seemed like it would flow along and then drag for awhile. It's not bad and there have been others in the series I have liked better than others. IF there is a 13th book in the series I would no doubt read it. I like Savitch and Sherlock enough to keep reading.

I appreciate the fact that CC doesn't have a lot of profanity in her books and explicit sexual situations. These aren't really romance but more thrillers. The only really sexual scene was between Savich and Sherlock which was kind of cute actually.

Though this wasn't my favorite of the series, it still had its moments and if you've read the rest of the series you will want to read this one.

"Tailspin" correctly describes the action in Catherine Coulter's latest romantic suspense novel. FBI Special Agents Dillon Savich and Lacey Sherlock, a married team, dive headfirst into an investigation full of question marks.

Following an attempt on his life, Dr. Timothy MacLean is put into FBI custody after having been diagnosed with frontal lobe dementia, a devastating illness that has no cure. Outward symptoms consist of the victim babbling uncontrollable scenarios --- some true, others not. MacLean has leaked private information from his patients' case files, and his stories could strike untold damage in their lives. He confides in his best friend and tennis partner, Arthur Dolan, who drives off a cliff shortly after their conversation. FBI Special Agent Jack Crowne, a family friend, pilots a small plane over the Kentucky mountains to bring MacLean back to Washington, D.C. where he can be monitored and protected. But the flight plan does not include a fiery crash in rough mountain terrain, cause unknown.

Nearby, in a clearing outside Parlow, Kentucky, Rachael Abbott witnesses the incident and rushes to aid possible survivors. She seeks sanctuary in the back country where she can sort out the elements that have put her life into a spin; she must guard her secret and hide her true identity. But her sense of duty prevails when she lifts the wounded pilot to his feet and navigates him to the nearest clinic.

TAILSPIN transfers action back and forth among the four leading characters. Although the primary plot line follows MacLean's story, Rachael's cannot be ignored. She too has been targeted for murder and is traversing the countryside headed for Slipper Hollow, to safe haven with her uncle Gillette. She is terrified that the FBI team will learn that she is the recently discovered bastard daughter of powerful U.S. Senator James Abbott.

Barely six weeks after welcoming her into his family without question, the Senator dies in a one-car accident. Alcohol findings at the crash site indicate he was driving while drunk, wrecking the car and killing himself. Shortly afterwards, Rachael is drugged, hogtied to a block of cement and thrown into a lake, but escapes due to her tremendous strength and will to live. On the run from the killers, she comes upon the plane crash scene.

Sherlock and Savich investigate MacLean's case and discover a bomb as a possible cause. MacLean is taken to the hospital in D.C.; he is hurt but will recover physically. While there, two additional murder attempts keep the FBI hopping. One of the team's members suffers a syringe attack but keeps the murderer at bay with help from a nurse. Meanwhile, Rachael is convinced that her father's sister Laurel, his brother Quincy and Laurel's sleazy husband Kostas are out to eliminate her. Before his death, the Senator had divulged a secret that haunted his last days. If it became public, the family would suffer humiliation --- a motive for his murder and that of his daughter. Jack Crowne became her guardian and discovered an emotional attachment to the girl with the unusual blond braid. Sexual attraction is tastefully worded, both in the lives of the married FBI agents and the young woman with her protector. Coulter writes these interludes with intensity yet discretion.

A klutzy local sheriff adds flair to the story. He's an actual retiree from a big city police force, much more intelligent than he first appears. Additional small-town flavor comes forth in the personalities of a diner waitress, Uncle Gillette, the local doctor and, of course, the would-be abductors who try to kill Rachael.

The reader wanders toward an attempt to interlace the two plots, making the doctor's patients wind toward the Senator's death. Dr. MacLean's predicament is powerful, and Coulter touches but briefly on the devastation that wrecks his life. She brings both stories to their logical end, with a twist that will leave the audience in a TAILSPIN.

The only thing I could wish for in this story was that Jackson Crowe and Rachael Abbott had not hooked up. It was too predictable and follows a pattern that the author has established in her prior books. I guess that I am rebelling against this common ploy, perhaps unfairly. Catherine Coulter is such an outstanding author that she doesn't need to dip her pen in that inkwell. She does, however, portray intimacy with a fine and restrained hand, and never debases herself or her characters with vulgar, soft porn descriptives that far too many authors seem to think necessary to sell a book. I appreciate this respect for the intelligence of the reader and the characters' integrity.

There are so many threads to follow in this excellent FBI story. Savich and Sherlock are as compelling and engaging as always. I didn't like that Sherlock got shot, however. One gets so attached to the characters that to put one in such jeopardy is emotionally wrenching. I know, I know, silly, but there you have it. The were few surprises as to who the killers of Senator Abbott were, which I would have liked to figure out myself; however, there was a surprise! surprise! very bad person that I didn't "get" until the very end. I liked that twist a lot.

One could really feel a lot of empathy toward the unfortunate Dr. Maclean and the medical course he was doomed to follow due to his disease that put him and his patients at such risk. It caused me to reflect upon aging and the brain pathologies that can destroy a person. This is one of Catherine's strongest suits as a writer. She inspires deeper, personalized reflections through the excellent content she includes in her books.

I found this story to be very engrossing. There wasn't tons of romance but I was okay with that. I like the whole question of, what could happen if damaging private information got leaked to the public? I felt like that question, and the ramifications were very interesting. I also liked Rachel's story, though that ended as expected. So why not 5 stars? Well, I suppose I could've used a bit more romance. Savich and Sherlock are great characters, but their story has been told. More between Jack and Rachel would've bumped it up a star. As a whole, this is one of the favorite books that I've read this summer.

In this latest FBI series do not be looking for a good read. Ms Coulter is way off track on this one. It starts out well but goes downhill from there. There is much repetition and if you are looking for a relationship between the the newest FBI agent and the female protaganist..forget it..it sort of melts away. Those characters are not well developed and it ends up focusing on Savich and Sherlock..her main FBI characters. And really a shoot out in a Barnes and Noble bookstore in downtown DC! It makes them all look so incredibly ridiculous!
Sorry but i am not enamored of this latest book.

She woke up to find her hands tied to her chest and her legs locked in wieights just before theyows her into the lake. An expert swimmer, Rachel Abbott, illegitimate daughter of a powerful senator, gets free and goes on the run. She believes her father's two siblings want her dead to prevent her from revealing something that could have destroyed her dad's career; though before he died he was planning to go public. In Kentucky Appalachia on her way to a safe house to rest and think, she sees a plane make an emergency crash landing; the pilot and the passenger manage to escape just before the plane exploded.

The pilot is FBI Agent Jackson Crowne who was flying his friend psychiatrist Dr Timothy MacLean to Washington, D.C. in order for the agency to protect him from an unknown adversary. Dr. Maclean suffers from frontal lobe dementia, which has led him to break confidentiality about three patients. Even at the hospital there are attempts on the psychiatrist's life just as there are on Rachel's. Happily married Savich and Sherlock are sent to learn what happened to Maclean and then hearing her story, take Racheal under their wing. Soon they too are in danger from killers wanting Timothy and Rachel silenced.

Catherine Coulter is one of the best authors of exciting thrillers writing today. The several subplots running throughout her novels that eventually tie together is a work of art. In the case of TAILSPIN, Savich and Sherlock heat up the pages while a romance between Rachel and Jack blossoms. Readers already care about SS, but will also like JR. and his evolving romance with Rachael. Fans of the series will relish the protagonists and their cronies as they struggle to stay alive against cunning professional killers.

Dr. Timothy MacLean is a psychologist to all the movers and shakers in Washington, but when he is diagnosed with frontal lobe dementia and starts leaking confidential information about his patients someone tries to run him and keep him quiet permanently. After the second attempt on his life, FBI Special Agent Jack Crowne steps in and attempts to fly Dr. MacLean to safety. During the flight, a bomb goes off and sends Agent Crowne and Dr. MacLean to a fiery crash in Parlow, Kentucky. Luckily for both men, Rachael Abbott is there to witness the crash and assist both men in the rescue. Rachael has just discovered that she is the illegitimate daughter of a Senator, who she believes was murdered. Agent Crowe soon learns that Rachael is running away from people who are attempting to murder her as well. With Dr. McLean in a coma from the crash and Agent Crowe determined to protect Rachael from ferocious murderers he enlists the help of Agents Savich and Sherlock. With conspiracy theories, political secrets, dysfunctional families and assassins on the lose Catherine Coulter provides an excellent plot weaved with suspense, mystery and romance. Tailspin is a great addition to Coulter's FBI series. Written with superb attention to detail and excellent character dialogue Coulter returns after a long absence at the top of her game. The return of our favorite Agents Savich and Sherlock coupled with new highly likeable characters and villains, readers with definitely get their monies worth. High praises for Tailspin. If you're a fan you will not be disappointed. No great work of literature but a good read for a lazy summer afternoon. FBI agents Dillion Savich and Lacey Sherlock have to figure out if some one is trying to kill a doctor who's patient list is made up of Washington movers and shakers. The Doctor is unconscious after surviving a plan crash, but he was recently diagnosed with a form of dementia that was making him act in uninhibited and erratic behavior. Was someone or a group of some ones worried about what the Doctor might reveal in his impaired mental capacity. Ok, there are a few plot inconsistencies, and you do have to take some of it with a grain of salt, but I expect that with this kind of book. The book is a fun mixture of suspense and action, with a little romance. Speaking of fun reads, I do recommend the thriller "A Tourist In The Yucatan" a good beach read that is something of an underground hit.
