This challenging book will convict the heart of readers to live in the light of eternity.
Fiction: Fans of Randy Alcorn will applaud this soul-stirring story of two college friends reconnecting after 20 years. Both are involved in very different lives- one in America, one in China. The differences in countries, worlds, and moral character of each is brought to life.

I purchaced 18 copies of "Safely home" after reading this book. I have given them to people I care about because it is such a wonderful reminder of the intimacy available to us with our LORD. This book reads easily and you will find yourself encouraged by its story.

Don't read this book if you have any fantasies about how good China is treating Christians (or any other religious groups for that matter.) This tale only gives us a glimpse of how Christians fare in this country. The story line opens our eyes to the facts in China and greater truths through Ben as a powerful business man finds there is more to life than making money.

I've owned this book for more than three years and finally read it in the last couple of weeks. What I was waiting for I am not sure but I waited too long. It forms an excellent presentation of the Gospel that saves men's souls!

Safely home is full of Scripture and scriptural principles and you may enjoy it for the adventure but you will also prosper spiritually by reading it.

Reading Safely Home also gives one a great perspective on the life of the persecuted church in China and around the world. For more on the persecuted church, check out www.persecution.com .

I can't imagine this book failing to put a burden,on the hearts of all who read it,at least for prayer, for all the Christians who are being persecuted(often in horrifying ways)around the world.

I also couldn't help thinking maybe such persecution here, is exactly what it will take to destroy all the 'false doctrine- Prosperity Preaching' churches, and the appalling apathy of many Christians here in America!

This book grabbed me from the beginning and never let go until the end.Would love to see this made into a movie.

An amazing, eye and heart-opening book. May God continue to bless Randy Alcorn, and continue to use him to further His Kingdom.

Although this book sheds a very informative view of the home churches across china, I found that the characters were not easily identifiable. In addition, the last quarter of the book seemed that is was written for a fast ending, almost as if the author became bored and just wanted a nice simple ending. I had my hopes up in the beginning, but by the end I was also bored and really wanted it to end.

If anything, read it for a better understanding of the home churches across China.

Safely Home puts into perspective as to what is important in this life. It is a window that allows the reader to view religious persecution in today's world both here in the U.S. and abroad. Once you begin to read, it will be hard to put the book down.

Buy this book, take a day off, and read it. I read it 2 years ago and I have bought or loaned this book out to at least 20 friends since then -- all of whom have loved it. If you are a Christian, I trust you will be convicted and challenged as you read it.

An excellent book. Every Christian should read this to help expand their understanding of the persecution Christians around the world experience daily. We are blessed to live in the U.S.A. And thank God for our soldiers who help preserve our freedom to worship freely.

I just read a book called "Safely Home" by Randy Alcorn and it shook my life to the core. As you traveled with Ben Fielding, as you watch all of his preconceived ideas of the persecuted church be dashed on the rocks, I saw my on ideas being torn from me as well. As he sees persecution first hand and how they find it an honor, not a punishment to go through these horrific tortures, it brought me to my knees in repentance of my own trivial whining. I saw how, in my own way of thinking, I demand that my life stay as rattled free as possible, we call it a right that we deserve. I looked at my own life with new eyes and with much shame as I watched in the pages what persecution truly looks like. If you are quite content with your life and you really don't want anything to rock your boat, I strongly suggest that you do not read this book. If you are ready to see how our brothers and sisters in Christ suffer for the cross of Christ, with joy, hope, and peace, then I challenge you to open this book with a readiness to be changed forever. Even though this is a work of fiction, Randy Alcorn stays faithful to the true facts of the life of a persecuted christian. As I finished the book my heart was broken in how I live my life in my own selfishness and how amazing my life is blessed by God. It was a book that stay with me even into the grocery store and the ice cream aisle. This is a must read for anyone who is ready to fall in love with those who are prepared and ready to die for their faith. They are willing to teach us what true living is all about. Are you ready?

While the message of "Safely Home" is important, the book largely failed to resonate with me. The writing is just plain poor, with flat, stereotypical characters; a plodding, cliched, predictable plot; and long passages of dull sermonizing as the author preaches to the choir. (Mild spoilers?...) The frequent shift to the POV of characters watching the events from heaven was hugely ham-fisted, irritating, and (especially towards the end) a bit blasphemous as the author takes it upon himself to think God's thoughts for him. I think it's a shame we let ourselves be content with poor writing such as this simply because it's "Christian". I continue to be underwhelmed by modern Christian fiction.

A superbly written book! I've read lots of books about China, but never have I read one quite like this. Yes, it is fiction, but there is so much truth and history to be found in its pages. I have a renewed heart for the persecuted church throughout the world.

Eye opening view of the trials of our family members in China. I was already aware of their plight but in a novel form it really made it stick to the heart. One could easily use this book as the text book for a college course. It's not your average novel; in fact it's almost not a novel at all. The storyline is not what keeps it going but the lessons that are learned within. If you don't like preaching you'll probably not care for this book but I'd suggest reading it anyway. In a way it makes me feel bad that I live in the U.S. but in another way I'm extremely thankful. Most of our churches are so far from service to Christ and teachers of doctrines that tickle the ears. This book should be read by every believer as a wakeup to the high calling of Christ Jesus. Time for us to die to ourselves.

Best ending to a book I've ever read. I can't wait to live it!

Read this book and prepare to be changed.

'Safely Home' is a gripping novel that will challenge the reader in a big way.

Alcorn has a way of writing that makes one feel like he is right there - in China being brutalized by a repressive government and in Heaven experiencing the endless wonders there. He raises a strong awareness of the issues faced by the persecuted Church and the very deep commitment necessary for surviving in those systems.

It contains a beautiful portrayal of Heaven along with the vivid depiction of the persecution of Christians in China. In combining these two topics, Alcorn has written a story that is hard to put down.

I would highly recommend this book for Christians. It might not be the best one for pre-Christians as it may come across as a bit preachy in places.

I also recommend two other Alcorn novels: 'Deadline' and 'Dominion'. Another one that is a great book by him is the non-fiction book 'Heaven'. He is an author who will really challenge the stereotypical view of Heaven. When he is writing, Heaven is always portrayed as an extremely desirable and exciting place. He certainly doesn't see it as a land of endless harp music.

(Hide Review...)  A Vivid Portrayal of Heaven and Challenges Faced by Chinese Christians
Reviewer Permalink
My mother gave us this book when she found out that we were going to adopt a little girl from China. Safely Home hit me hard on several counts. First, it provided a great counterbalance to so much we have heard about freedom of religion and expression in China. I will travel to China with my eyes open. Second, I gained an incredible appreciation for those who sacrifice all for their faith and who don't have ready access to God's Word. Finally, the author made heaven very real to me in a way I've never experienced. I have a much more vivid and accurate picture of heaven than I ever have had before.

This book sometimes is a bit melodramatic and preachy but by the time I got to the end, this didn't even seem like much of a drawback. I'm not sure how Safely Home would be received by someone who did not already have a personal faith in God, or at least was close to such a faith, but believers will find it very inspirational.

If an American Christian could only own 2 books, they should be the Bible and Safely Home. This is inspiring, convicting, and a thrilling read. What makes it even more gripping is that much of the book is based on actual events that have taken place in China. After I read it, I bought one for a friend, and she stayed up all night reading it, because she couldn't put it down. Well worth purchasing, because you'll read it more than once and want to share it with others!

This book was reccommended to me by a friend and I decided to try it. Little did I know how much it would affect me. It takes actual accounts from missionaries around the world, combines them with accounts from the early church of Acts, and creates a fictional story with very real situations. Despite being fictional characters, the testimonies are powerful and I couldn't help but be moved by the way Christians in other parts of the world are sacrificing so much for the cause of Christ. I highly reccommend this book to anyone who wants an exciting read that at times may move you to tears.

I had "Safely Home" in my bookcase for at least a year before reading it, which is amazing considering how much I loved Deadline and Dominion by this author. I've just never been too interested in the Orient, and when I saw that the story took place in China, I kept putting other books ahead of this one. Thank God someone happened to mention how good it was. I was completely captivated from the beginning. Li Quan lived and breathed for me...this hero made me really stop to think about courage and commitment to God. Watching the slow conversion of his visiting classmate from college days was so satisfying. Li Quan was the kind of man who preaches a sermon silently, through his manner of living and coping with hardship. The persecution of Christians in China is a sad reality. I honestly cannot see how anyone could help but love this book. The story line is exceptional, the characterization is superb, and the message is life-changing. You simply can't close the cover of Safely Home and not look for a charity that distributes Bibles to the Christians in China. Another thing you can't do is ignore the message: God may require the supreme sacrifice from those who truly love Him and follow Him with steadfast faith. Few of us will ever be called to give our lives for our faith, but we must be WILLING to do so. And it is our eternal destination that really matters. Safely Home will entertain you immensely, but that is the least of what you'll gain by reading it! Please do get this book, and pass it along to a good friend after you've read it.
