Barbara gives birth to her fourth son, conceived just a month before her beloved husband was killed. She is determined to keep their business going, a harness shop which she loves. However, her strength does not return as quickly as she planned, and she must have help. There were several other deaths in the community, with several left to fend for their families and find new loves. While I loved some of the characters in this book, I felt it was way too obvious and not very innovative as far as Amish stories are involved. However, I will buy book three.

On Her Own: Brides of Webster County, Book 2 (Truly Yours Romance Club #17)
Wanda Brunstetter has done an excellent job drawing the reader into the private life of Barbara Zook. After losing her husband she is faced with the reality of raising four boys and also running a harness shop. Paul Hilty agrees to oversee the harness shop for her as she awaits the birth of her fourth child and until she gets back on her feet. Bishop John Frey is looking for a mother for his teenage daughters after the death of his wife and Barbara wonders if he would be the right one that God would have for her even though she still loves her dead husband. She is attracted to Paul also. She prays that God would help her in her dilema. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-15 05:53:15 EST)

No woman rejoices at widowhood. The loss of a spouse often feels like the end of the world. It is no different for Barbara Zook who loses her beloved David and is left to raise her son's and run his harness shop. Once again, Brunstetter's strong characters are evident in this charming love story. Barbara knows she is expected to remarry, but her heart's desire is not to become Bishop John's wife and mother to his four daughters. She wants to keep the harness shop open and running for her sons. After hiring Paul Hilty to work in the shop after she gives birth to her fourth son, Barbara finds her feelings for him to be roaming every-which-way. But rumors and speculation have Paul thinking Barbara is planning to marry Bishop John. With this knowledge, Paul seemingly gives up and plans to leave Holmes County. Can Barbara push the sorrow aside find love again with Paul? Or is it too late?

Wanda is trying but her books are not very good. Comparing them to Beverly Lewis is the problem because Beverly is SOOOO good. Wanda's books were dry, unemotional, rushed and shallow. Many of the plots don't make sense and a lot of what is done would never happen in an Amish community or home. She needs to get inside her characters a LOT more. I also found a lot of errors in grammar and typos in the text in all the books of hers i have read. I have never seen so many errors. This tells me they are rushing her to write and rushing everything to print to make a buck and trying to capitalize off of Beverly Lewis' excellent success writing about the Amish.
I read Wanda's books out of boredom and waiting for the next Bev Lewis to come out. It wasn't worth the $13.00 but if you can get them for free at the library and you have some time to kill AND you truly cannot find anything else to read (how about some Jane Austen?)... then go for it but don't expect much. I enjoy Wanda Brunstetter's books because they give me a little more insight into the Amish culture and mindset. If you've enjoyed her other books featuring Amish characters, then you won't be disappointed with this one.

Barbara is a widow. She has 4 boys; one she just gave birth to--eight months after her husband died. For an Amish woman, she certainly is determined and independent. She tries to keep her husband's leatherworking shop open. She loves working in the shop, and she wants to pass it down to her son, Aaron.
Working in the shop and taking care of the kids starts to take a toll on her. She hires a temporary worker once she has the baby. She both appreciates him and resents him. Bishop John Frey decides he needs to marry her. He is the most arrogant, self-centered character Brunstetter has ever created. I felt guilty for despising the bishop, but it was warranted. Barbara does not love the bishop. Will she marry him anyway? What will she do when her temporary worker leaves? Will the community understand that she loves the shop or will they continue to encourage her to sell it? I really liked Barbara. She is a self-motivated entrepreneur and a loving mother. Even when fighting postpartum depression, she has a strong will. This is another great book from Brunstetter. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-10 05:57:28 EST)

This is an excellent book. So much love and Christianity to spread around. The amish simply amaze me the way they live. I am spoiled to all the imminities and would be devastated without them. But it doesnt bother them. It would be so wonderful to have loving, caring and sharing neighbors to count on like they had.

THIS BOOK AS ALL WANDA'S BOOKS FILLS A VOID IN PEOPLE WHO HAVE GONE THROUGH HAD TIMES. THE WAY BARBARA REMAINS STEADFAST IN RAISING HER BOYS AFTER LOSING HER BELOVED HUSBAND, GIVES EVERYONE A CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE HEARTACHE, AND AFTERWOODS HAPPINESS. HER DEVOTION AND HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS GIVE HER THE COURAGE TO GO ON. THE FAMILIES IN THE AMISH COMMUNITY GIVE US A GOOD EXAMPLE OF WHAT IT MEANS TO STICK TOGETHER. THIS BOOK AS USUAL BROUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES, BUT ALSO GAVE ME THE COURAGE TO FACE A GOOD DEAL OF MY OWN PROLEMS. I RECOMMEND THIS AND ALL WANDA'S BOOKS TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO JUST FEEL GOOD.

I liked this book very much and am also impressed continually by Wandas'wholesome writing.I was glad that she ended up with Paul. I also thought it made for a very real story to put in the fact that her oldest boy didn't take up with Paul right away. Nadia Rehmani

Reviewed by Kelli Glesige for Reader Views (4/07)
Once again, Wanda E. Brunstetter offers us a glimpse into the life of the Amish community with this audio version of "On Her Own," perfect for listening to in the car, while exercising, or anytime listening is a convenient alternative to reading. On their tenth wedding anniversary, David Zook is killed unexpectedly in a car accident, leaving wife Barbara alone to raise their three children while pregnant with their fourth. If that isn't enough, Barbara must also find a way to run the harness shop David loved so dearly. How will Barbara accomplish it all? Paul Hilty has strayed from the plans his father had for him by choosing harness making over farming. But David Zook had his business in Webster County, leaving little room for the services Paul could offer. Now Paul hears of the struggles Barbara is encountering with trying to raise a family and run a harness shop. Paul returns to Webster County for his older brother's funeral when his brother dies of a sudden and unexpected fatal heart attack. Paul knows he must answer God's calling, but he must not let the emotions of his heart get in the way. Paul believes God to be calling him home to Webster County to offer his help to Barbara and her young family. Paul is a lifesaver to Barbara and her family, and she values Paul's help tremendously. But does she just love the help he provides, or is it something more? Paul also struggles when he feels himself falling in love with Barbara, but Bishop John Fry appears to have feelings for Barbara, and Paul believes Barbara reciprocates those same feelings. I find the writing of Wanda E. Brunstetter to be extremely refreshing and wholesome. All her work is based on good and proper principles that I find quite appealing. I recommend "On Her Own" to others who are enlightened by these same standards and who dislike so much of what the media deems acceptable these days. Wanda E. Brunstetter is a five-star author in my book! This audio is appropriate for all ages. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-11-15 06:02:10 EST)
