I have recommended and/or given this book to many, many friends over the years since I first read it. I give it with a caveat: You must have a soft heart toward the Lord and a listening ear for what He will tell you as you read it. It is like no other book as it tells the allegorical tale of Much Afraid and her special traveling companions as she is lead to escape the dismal, loathsome valley she was born to. She encounters many trials and tribulations on her transforming journey -- but Help is ever present, even in the darkest times . . . and the end of the book -- a new beginning. Highly recommend this book!

The main character, Much Afraid, is having a tough journey to Christ. She has a lot of setbacks and disappointments.

I know this is suppose to be encouragement - and I know this is how it really is - but I was so discouraged and depressed while reading this. It was really hard for me to read. It wasn't the upbeat Christian book that I prefer.

This little book by Hannah Hurnard is an excellent allegory of our walk with Jesus. It presents in a clear, easy to read manner the story of Much Afraid and her problems in life and how she overcomes them with her walk and faith in "The Shepherd." A good source for a Bible Study or just a good easy read. The book illustrates how life can be tough and challenging and what we must overcome to walk in high places. I highly recommend it.

I have had a copy of this book for years and lent it out and never got it back. I recently ordered a copy for a friend and another for myself. This book is wonderful and even though it is written in parables - the Character "Much-Afraid" and her "Fearling" relatives are an inspiration and wonderful lesson to Jesus' love for us and the steps we take towards a renewed life and spirit in His Love. - I highly reccomend this book to anyone starting their Christian spiritual journey and to those who have been walking it for a long time - it is a blessing. Reviewer Permalink
Although this publication is arranged for children, those of us in our "mature years" can benefit from these timeless truths. Through analogy, Hannah Hurnard explains pain, sorrow, and difficulties as a necessary part of the Shepherd/King's plan for enabling us to leap through the high places with Him while love is blossoming in our hearts. Sharing this book with those important younger ones in our lives will guide them in accepting with joy and bearing with love while being transformed from a cripple to one with hind's (deer) feet. Much-Afraid becomes Grace and Glory.

This is one of my favorite books of all times. This book was given to me about 14 years ago when I was going through my divorce and I was about as low as I could get-I felt like I was worthless and nobody loved me. It really helped me get through a rough time, pick myself up and realize I was not alone. I realized what a wonderful person I was, always was and always will be. Since then I have passed the book along to probably a dozen or more people and they all have said the same for this little book. When I am down, I pick it up and read it again (parts or all of it). It is really an inspirational book for anyone. Highly recommend this book!

Hannah Hurnard's "Hinds' Feet on High Places" is a family classic. We read it after dinner for months, two pages per night, with our pre-teen children always pleading "read another page!" Hurnard writes with elegance and interest, telling a parable or allegory of Christ shepherding a terrified child on the journey of faith. Her encounter with her two guides, "Suffering and Trials" and Christ's explanation of their purpose in her life, teaching a life lesson every person, regardless of age, must learn.

Reviewer Permalink
Hannah Hurnard's book has long held a special place in my heart. It's a sensitive parable of the life of faith, full of the Shepherd's love. Unfortunately, Flo Schmidt's narration trivializes the book. The reading is badly overacted, giving the parable the quality of a melodrama. The reader seems to believe that we won't figure out what to feel about the story unless the emotions are hammered into us.

My recommendation: find an audio performancy by a different narrator or stick with the print version.

This book is one of my favorites and I've frequently given it as a gift. The story follows the journey of Much Afraid in her quest to reach "the High Places". Because she is crippled, her family tells her she can't do it. But she listens the Good Shepherd who asks her to trust him. As she visits various locations, you'll marvel at her faith and progress.

What makes this book so special is that there are lessons about life hidden in every chapter and there are layers upon layers of symbols underneath the storyline. The book can be read on a story level by children as young as 7 or 8, and older readers can seek the nuggets of wisdom beneath the surface.

A quick and deceptively easy read, this book ranks among the truly great books ever written. In an allegory of simple clarity and delightful word-pictures, the author follows Much-Afraid on her epic journey.

Reminiscent of John Bunyon's "Pilgrim's Progress," this book shows the author's own unique touch and personality in prose that has a poetic quality to it.

Read it for the sheer beauty of language. But read it also for the beauty of the story with its amazing picture of love. Perfect for reading aloud, the lyrical quality of the language delights the ear.

This is a book with much to recommend it. It has stood the test of time. It deserves a place among your most treasured volumes.

Another person who wrote a review said exactly what I felt after reading this book; other than the bible....this book touched the secret recesses of my heart more than any other book I've ever read. There are places in our hearts that hold things unspoken..feelings we have that cannot be put into words. As God and His word touches these places, so did this scripturally sound allegory about suffering, pain, fear, hope, yearning, and above all, the willingness to trust our Shepherd's leading at any cost. Much like the bible, which can be mined for treasure over and over, I believe this beautiful story is the same; I will treasure it forever and re-read it often.

This is an extended allegory taken from Habakkuk 3:19 about God making one's feet like hind's feet in overcoming difficulties in life. The author talks about observing the animals in action for herself and discovering that "their motion was one of the most beautiful examples of exultant and apparently effortless ease in surmounting obstacles which I have ever seen." The reference to hind's feet is also found in Psalms 18:33.

The first chapter starts with an invitation to the high places. It is in the concluding few chapters that she reconnects back to the book's primary theme. Numerous Christians have been encouraged by this book and chances are you will be too.

This is by far one of the best books I have ever read. It is an allegory about a woman named Much-Afraid who asks the Shepherd to take her to the High Places. She is told the only way to get there is to take 2 companions--Sorrow and Suffering. It is an amazing journey that will make you really think about life and how you live it. I have recommended this book to literally dozens of people over the years, and keep several copies at all times so I can give them away when appropriate.

(Hide Review...)  Perspective for the Journey
Reviewer Permalink
This book is like Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress only in that they are both allegories that give a wonderful overview and perspective of the Christian life. But Hinds Feet in High Places has much more heart, and I found it to stir the heart and soul in deep ways. It is the story of Much-Afraid leaving the Valley of Fear that she has always known, and embarking on a journey to become a new creation. The thing about this book is that it talks about the deepest longings and fears of our hearts in following God--following Him when we can't see ahead of us, when we feel like we're going in circles, when we feel like He is not taking us where we want to go, and how following Him can mean laying down the deepest desires of our hearts just because God asks us to, and we know Him to be good and loving. I enjoyed this book immensely, and found it both challenging and filled with grace; which is a rare find in Christian books which often offer only one or the other. All in all this is a love story between Much Afraid and her God; a God who calls her to a path that is filled with sorrow and suffering that take her to a deeper place of dependence on him, and also a God who is there the instant she calls for Him. This is a book that I will probably read every couple of years, as I am at different places in my own journey, and will always see something new that I didn't see before. It is well worth investing in.

This book opens your mind and your heart to intimacy with your creator. You become the main character, little Much Afraid. You see yourself in her fears and her victories. You begin to see Jesus as the groom and you as the bride in a love story much like the Song of Solomon. I read this book in June of 97. It was the catalyst that began a big change in my life. Now instead of seeking a quiet place to talk to God, I talk to Him nonstop in all I do. We ARE one, He and I. I love Him so and I know with no doubt He loves me.

Oh yes, there will be trials and bad times, but like the hind, you will be able to traverse the terrain just like it was flat ground. A friend recommended it to me once when I was going through some really trying times, and I can't tell you how much and how dramatically it has changed my Christian walk.

Anyone who has ever questioned God or wondered why evil exists or why people suffer, must read Hurnard. Having rejected Christianity as a teenager because she felt unloved herself, she was dramatically converted at 19 and was overwhelmed by the intense love of God and His desire for her to love others. Love is the imperative of this allegory, but not a foolish, blind, or too-sweet love; instead, it is a powerful force that heals deformities, overcomes mountains, and compels the human soul to heights never before possible. The Shepherd is not a benign Savior, but a strong and holy Savior who demands sacrifice and gives ultimate joy and peace in return. His unconditional love desires and achieves the best for the beloved. Throughout this allegory, Hurnard dramatically portrays for the reader a life of fulfillment beyond typical spiritual mediocrity - a life that she is insists is attainable. Anyone willing to pursue a deeper relationship with God will find in Hurnard and excellent mentor.

This is a spiritual and uplifting book. It is also an overly sweet and slightly preachy book. I admit from the (paperback) cover I was hoping for the tale of a doe deer, *at play in the Fields of the Lord*. Instead, it is a well-meant, if vaguely generic, journey of a timid girl*s journey to Christ. Everyone bears a descriptive Pilgrims-Progress name such as the girl Much-Afraid, the odious Lord Craven, the quiet mountain guides Sorrow & Suffering, the spirited Mrs.Valiant, etc. The girl must face many challenges, of course, must have her faith tested, of course, must fall away from the path, of course. All this is encouraging for both the novice and the longterm Christian; yet it will not be to all tastes. I have seen a similar treatment in CS Lewis* The Pilgrim*s Regress, but with stronger results. This book is encouraging, yet I find it on the level of a meal made up of mainly broccoli, whole-wheat bread, brown rice, and tofu: It is good, it is filling, but is that all there is? A good book, but left to those who enjoy that sort of meal.

Apart from the Bible, this has been the most inspiring work I have ever read. Hannah Hurnard has totally captured the experience of the Christian walk and the way in which Christ is always there to guide us through all our trials and tests so that the flower of Acceptance with Joy and Love can bloom in the heart and we can be in the High Place, the Kingdom of Love, where resides the true and perfect love "that drives out fear." The exciting thing is that this is not talked about in a future or "the next life" sense but that God's love is something that we can experience now and to its fullest!

Give it as gifts and share it with new Christians!

A NOTE FOR CHRISTIAN TEACHERS: The way in which this book is constructed it provides an execellent teaching tool for any Christian study group.

...AND TO THOSE CALLED TO MINISTRY: The conclusion of this book is exactally a description of the way that I understand the call to ministry...I don't want to ruin it but suffice it to say that for you it is a must read (as it is for anyone!)

Hind's Feet On High Places is a wonderful, beautiful allegory of God's love for each one of us. Although we face many trials along the Christian life, Jesus is always there and will always hear and help us when we cry to Him. He is especially close to the broken-hearted. We can always come to our Chief Shepherd, Jesus Christ, without any fear. Much-Afraid sought the Chief Shepherd early in the morning and late in the evening when her work was done. I believed she sang to Him all through the day too. This too, is our priviledge as children of God. I thank God for such an anointed writer as Hannah Hurnard. This is by far the most beautiful book that I've read. I will read and re-read this book for years to come. I have given it as a gift to friends. To all who long to live a life filled with nothing else but love for God, this is the book to read. And to all who feel that God has abandoned them and that there is no hope of reconciliation, this is the book that God will use to restore you. God bless you as you read it.

Once I started reading this book, I was immediately propelled into a different "world". It addresses the issue of "obstacles" encountered while trying to attain your goals. The use of generic names such as, Much Afraid creates a "person" we can all identify with. The reading is smooth and never boring. It is one of those books that you will want to give loved ones, friends or even enemies.. I purchased Mountain of Spices as well and it was just as invigorating, as it "took up" where Hind's Feet left off !!
