Assassins: Assignment: Jerusalem, Target: Antichrist (Left Behind No. 6)

After selling nearly two million copies since its release in August 1999, Assassins in now availabe in trade paper! The seven-year Tribulation reaches its halfway mark in the sixth book of the blockbuster Left Behind series, Assassins. Nicolae Carpathia is assassinated, setting the stage for the Great Tribulation.
Is it right to kill Satan's hit man? Would it help God's work? This installment in the Left Behind series picks up with Rayford Steele--"believer" and international fugitive--as he struggles with a plan to assassinate Antichrist Nicolae Carpathia. Meanwhile, Carpathia has been busy rebuilding roads, airports, and a cellular/solar satellite phone system--all designed to help him become supreme ruler of the world--and even claim himself to be God. We also find ace reporter Buck Williams anonymously preaching to the masses of believers and converts through his cyberspace magazine The Truth. All the believers in the safe house, including Buck, Doc, Chloe, and Tsion, are suspicious of Hattie--former mistress of Carpathia--who claims to be a believer but may have already compromised their secret location when she tried to buy her way to Europe months before.

Fans of the series won't be disappointed. Jenkins's signature writing is at full force. Readers can count on a suspenseful plot, imaginative futuristic thinking, and familiar characters, all of which appear in the opening pages and are sustained until the last cliffhanger scene when God unleashes another earth-shattering disaster.

In reviewing books 1 - 5 of this series, I've done my best to bash them without mercy.

The reason I've done this is that the books have deserved bashing. They're bad. Really, very bad. And, while I could pick apart this entry in the series, I think it's time to step away from heavy criticism for a moment and concentrate on the good. Now is the perfect time to do it because Assassins is far and away the best in the series thus far.

I don't know what happened to make it so, but the fact remains. Assassins approaches decent writing.

By allowing even the slightest bit of "gray" into the character of Rayford, there develops interesting conflict between him and the other members of the Tribulation Force. I loved his confrontation with 'T' (which was also one of the only examples of actual Christian virtue I've seen in the series, another huge plus here) and hope for a hinted-at confrontation with Buck further down the line. I've known many, many Christians in my time, and I wouldn't describe one of them as being "perfect." I'm sure that LaHaye & Jenkins would agree with me on that, and I'm glad to see that start to creep into their heroes.

Also, a great thing about this entry in the series was that it didn't wait until the very ending of the novel to have something exciting happen. The pattern, till now, had been to have one Tribulation per novel, usually in the last few pages. Here, we get a Tribulation early on, and so are actually dealing with exciting events during the majority of the book, not just discussing their possibility. That's a great step forward!

Leah Rose seems like a strong character, and might reverse the seeming trend to render all female characters irrelevant; the character of Chloe has never realized its potential, and Hattie approaches a caricature of a non-believer, but Leah might be the one to present a strong, central woman to the cast. Only time will tell there.

These positives -- a more exciting plot and deeper characterizations -- are only a beginning. And, I fear, they might easily be reversed by the novels to come. But, I will take them for what they're worth. They do not make this book "good," but do pull it close to 2.5 stars in my mind, rounded down to 2 due to all of the issues I still have with this series that remain unresolved.

This book at least gives a glimmer of hope that the books to come may prove more tolerable than those I've already, er, left behind.

The content was good, but the story lines really dragged. The fourth book was the best so far. I had a hard time getting through this one. I have started number 7 which seems to be faster paced. The authors need to learn how to write better cliff hangars , they have the material they just need to learn how to keep it going.
I do appreciate thier effort at bringing people to Christ and the truth to thoses who wouldn't hear it otherwise. Amen to them!

This was by far the best book in the series. The action, suspense, comedy, and elements of saddness blend so well, that its hard not to love the books for what they are.
Unlike the last installments, "Assassins" takes on a darker premise. The characterization gets much more refined, because of the writers ability of putting the reader more into the minds of the character... whereas in the others there wasnt as much of that.
The sensory imput was amazing. Reading about how many of the people die in this novel is gruesome. I have to admit, i cringed at some of the gory details, and believe me when I say there is an abundance in this one as compared to the priors.
I just want to know who shot Nicolae. This book sucked me in so bad I was screaming with excitment. I will no doubt devour the next one.

Ok, I took on the task of reading this series, because the first book was really good. But after that it gets more repetitive, and less believable. I contemplated skipping the rest of the books and buying the last one to see what happens, im sure i wouldn't miss much and would be caught up by the first 200 or so pages. Maybe I can just read the last of each book? I don't know, but I'm trying hard not to give up..The authors really should be ashamed of themselves for dragging this out.

With the exception of the first book, I've given the Left Behind sequels 1 star, mostly because of the extremely slow pace, where it feels like they took a few chapters and stretched them out to make a whole novel. The other problem is that they are preachy.

Well, "Assassnis" was certainly a step in the right direction. The was some action in the book, not (as in "Apollyon") only 200 pages into the book. "Assassins" was also not as preachy as for example "Soul Harvest".

So it's definitely an improvement. There are still problems though. There's still too much filler material and the book could have been about 50 pages shorter (but that's an imporvement from the other books, which should have been about 250 pages shorter). And the story is moving to slowly. I can't understand why they need to stretch it out into so many volumes.

2.5/5

I should know better than to write another review for the left behind series. I've taken a real killing in the votes. But, I can help it. I'm enjoying the series. I'm neither a huge critic or supporter of the series. I stayed away from the series for years but now I enjoy it. I don't agree with all of the theology but I am in general agreement.

This book like all the others have been fun fast reads. It isn't great fiction but it is a fun read. If you are looking for indeapth character this series will also bother you. It took several book for me to really empathize with the characters and now that they are going into the second half of the tribulation I still find that the character development is a bit stiff and unconvincing.

There was also poor dialog at several points in this particular book with entire conversations seeming very awkward. One stylistic issue that continues to bother me is long discussion where the dialog goes unattributed. This isn't always a problem but there are times during longer and more complicated conversations when the reader loses tract of who said what.

But, over all this book like the ones before it is a fun read and I recomemnd it for light reading.

Just as I finished the painful task I've given myself of reading this "popular" fictionalization of the End of Time, I saw an article in the news about a video game version of Left Behind, aimed at the market of teenage boys and young men, indoctrinating them in violence and giving them the false notion that their God would condone their taking judgement into their own hands. Do any of the readers of these books recall Jesus's denunciation of the self-righteous Sadducees in the Temple?

This book is so flawed in every which way, it is hard to know where to begin. First of all, we are living in the end times, and when Jesus comes, that's all she wrote, folks. There's no seven years, no Christians being zapped up, etc. This is our Second Chance on Earth. No tribulation. This book takes figurative visions and tries to apply it literally, and does it poorly. Reading this book made me think that if this was true, then what's the point of trying to be a Christian. Why not just live your life the way you want to, and then when people zap out of thin air, change your life. It's ridiculous and sends the wrong message. Plus, the writing is for second graders with no redeeming characteristics to it. But I really don't think the author's care at this point (seeing how many millions they've made printing lies). My recommendation is to read the bible instead of this series; then you'll get truth and the bible is probably shorter (and much better writing). Man, not even Kirk Cameron could save this train wreck.

Reviewer Permalink
Assassins is book 6 in the tribulation force and my least favorite next to Apollyon. I'm not a big Ray fan, and in this one my respect for the character dropped another few yards. I just didn't *care* for how Ray treated Leah, or his endless whining and self-recrimination every time he strays from the path- especially when he continued to do it. How he treated Ray, Beau, and Hattie was annoying, and now we expect this same middle-aged pilot to become an Assassin? Please.

This series has an interesting premise. But you pretty much figure that the main characters will live: Ray, Chloe, Buck and little Kenny and all other characters are cannon fodder. I can't count how many secondary characters were slain in this one and somehow the 'core group' seems to get away scott free.

Also, the authors are showing their sexist roots by enforcing the image that women are either: hookers or wives and home-makers. Why is the idea that Hattie be an assassin any less realistic than a middle-aged pilot? Why does Leah cook and clean the house and Chloe take care of the baby and play a good wifey while the 'boy's are out dueling with the anti-christ,' when both women are more than capable of doing more? Why does it appear Ray is trolling for wife number 3 in end-times?

The authors have a good series here, but characterization, dialogue is just not their strong point. 3 stars.

Let me just say this:

A lot fo LB books just drone on with a lot happening that does little to actually move along the actual overall story. It's a massive story, after all, so there are bound to be parts of the story that just make you wanna sla the authors and say, 'move on with it, already! I mean, get to the good stuff!'

And with this book, lots of stuff happens. Lots of stuff. Sadly, it was one of the most poorly written books in the series.

I remember flipping through pages thinking, 'this has NOTHING to do with the overall theme of the book.'

Thumbs in the middle for this one, trying very hard to lean up.

I have already written a review on the entire left behind series but i think that this book in this series deserves ALOT of credit for setting the path for the second half of the series. This entire series has been one of the most enjoyable reads of my life. Whether you are a believer or not you can easily find this book to be an enjoyable read.

This particular book is as exciting as any of the others, plain and simple, the basic premise of Assasins is the plan to assassinate Antichrist Nicolae Carpathia. The rest world and Carpathia are in the rebuilding process. This entire series of books are that sooo darn good that you can't stop reading them.

Over the course of these books the storyline increases quickly and progresses into a story that really makes you think and question what could happen...and if you are not a believer, it's simply a great work of fiction!

I loved this book, it truely set the ground work for what was to come in the next few books....

I've read the reviews that some other people have written, and they say this book is very off topic and has a lot of selfishness in the characters, and that the events taking place in the tribulation don't happen the way they are supposed to. HELLO PEOPLE, this is a FICTION book. I'm not saying the events that the scriptures say will happen aren't going to happen, because the Rapture will occur some day. I'm saying if Tim Lahaye and Jerry Jenkins wrote a story ONLY on the scriptures and no characters or settings or anything in the story, the story would be way shorter and not as suspenseful. Because when the Anti-Christ gets assassinated, there can be hundreds, maybe thousands of ways that could happen. So when you people say everything in this book is a bunch of garbage, remember this is a STORY.

This is the sixth book in the Left Behind series. It is also the first one in the series I did not finish in one sitting. It did not flow as well as the others, so as to lend itself to a complete reading in one evening. The book also spends a lot of time re-telling what we read in previous books. I felt this time like I read half a novel.

The book starts in the thirty-eighth month into the tribulation. But most of the characters seem a little too self serving in this book. Allowing their own desires to guide their actions. Whether that desire be derived from rage, revenge, self pity, or even guilt. Rayford spends most of his time focusing on Hattie or his desire to kill the Anti-Christ. Though I do like the description of the handgun that Rayford procures. And when the time comes for the assassination, there are a few characters to chose from.

The book ends in an old time cliff hanger where you are left guessing who it is that assassinated the Anti-Christ. Stay tuned for the next volume. I have read this far, so I will finish the series. Though most people my find this book suspensful, I did not.

This story starts almost a year after Book 5 ends, with Rayford Steele contemplating the state of the world since the Rapture. He's filled with rage at the fate they've been dealt and wishes he could be the one to destroy Carpathia. Hattie has gone missing, in her own desperate desire to kill Nicolae, and the Trib Force worries she may have unknowingly compromised their safe house. At the same time, believers are preparing their underground network for the day that all are forced to take the Mark of the Beast to buy or sell anything.

This story keeps you guessing as to what will happen to Nicolae and will the Two Witnesses at the wailing wall in Jerusalem finally meet their foretold end. Many different members of the Trib Force wish Nicolae would die and hope they will be the one chosen to see out the prophecy. The book steamrolls through the end, with us meeting new people, and saying good bye to others, good and evil alike. The book ends with a cliff hanger as to what really happened and "whodunit."

While there are complaints about how some are allegeldy mistaking this series for doctrine, it seems that the need for worry is misleading. The book is Bible-based fiction and the authors make absolutely no claims to the contrary.

While the series may seem rather long and drawn out, this reader felt that it was definitely worth the time because it gives the reader a fascinating look at the End Times, based on one interpretation of the Biblical text.

Mark Moore has it wrong. This book maybe Christian, but it is not propaganda. It tells about something that I (and many others) believe will happen.
Mark says that it is "ludicrous" to believe that the world would go into chaos if all the Christians disappeared. Give me a break! Let's see millions around the world disappear at the same time and without warning and not have chaos!
I think that Mark's accusations are what's ludicrous. "An evil religion perpetuated by zealous idiots"?!? Yeah right! What is his problem?! Christians are as normal as anyone else!
In the Bible, the book of Revelation takes about "20 pages" because it gives only enough detail to understand the basics of what is going to happen. The Left Behind books take much longer because they put the happenings into real life happenings.
Mark also says that there are no non-Christian records about Jesus. Wrong again! There was a non-Christian historian named Josephus who lived at about the same time as Jesus and who mentioned Him in his writings.

As for the quality of the book? I have read all of the Left Behind adult books and found them all to be good reading, but some of them could have been better. I personally think that the authors lost some of their good writing style by continuing the series so long. The last few books do not have as good of quality as the first several. Even so, I would definitely reccomend all of the Left Behind books for some good reading.

Reviewer Permalink
If you could kill the Antichrist, would you? That's the central question at the heart of this, the sixth novel in the blockbuster end-times series by Tim Lahaye and Jerry Jenkins, and the answer is more complicated than you might think, as several of the series' familiar characters discover for themselves. Normally rock-solid Rayford Steele takes a ride on a downward spiral in this one, and Nicolae Carpathia's evil continues to escalate. Meanwhile 200 million supernatural horsemen ride the earth wreaking terrifying havoc, and the fate of the two Witnesses is revealed. Critics of this evangelical phenomenon won't like this book either, but fans of the enormously popular series will find it's one of the most exciting entries in the series, right up to the chaotic cliffhanger ending. Just what happened, and who did it? ASSASSINS also boasts some of the most introspective and best writing since LEFT BEHIND itself, as we really get to see what's going on in the characters' turbulent minds. A great uplifting thriller, and certainly recommended.

The first three books in the series did an excellent job of moving the plot along, while riding a delicate balance with strong character development. Then books four and five hit -- more preachy material than story or character development. Total busts, IMHO. Book six, on the other hand, jumps back to the excellent writing style of plot/character development that the first three books promised. At this point in the series, this is the best book of the six.

Carpathia guns down the Jerusalem Twosome witnesses on their prophesied last day. Lying dead for three days while celebrants dance around their bodies, the two begin to stir and rise to Heaven.

Surprisingly, two diametrically opposed characters, Rayford Steele and Hattie Durham, decide independently and separately to kill Carpathia. In the closing pages, during the culmination of the celebration in Jerusalem Carpathia is shot in the head and is clearly dead.

Unclear, is who is responsible; Rayford, Hattie, or one of the ten under-potentates on the stage with Carpathia. Though the authors go out of their way to makes us think it's Rayford, I'm not so sure. And it probably doesn't matter--Carpathia, though dead here is destined to return in INDWELLING.

(Hide Review...)  3 1/2 Years and Counting...The AntiChrist is Dead!!!

I read the first 5 books together, then put the rest on hold for a while until more were released. I picked up this book, number 6, a few days ago and I am hooked once again!

This book contains graphical prophetic description when the 200 million demonic horsemen, on flamed horses with lion's heads, appear and kill 1/3 of the population of the world, all non-believers. The story goes on to the 3 1/2 year mark of the Tribulation, when the 2 Witnesses are assassinated and then resurrected. Read that part...I loved it! The book ends with the death of Nicolae Carpathia.

I am enjoying this series. Some reviewers have praised it, while others have called it narrow-minded and boring. Well, this is fiction, true enough, but if the end of the world is boring, I'd hate to see what you are into. Plus, the Word of God is narrow minded. "Narrow is the Path, and Few find it"

If you don't like the series, that is fine, everyone likes different things. But I am voting a positive "YES" on this series. I will enjoy reading the next 6 books and on into the other spin-offs. Nothing is more fascinating and enjoyable to me than seeing prophecy fullfilled, and while this work is fiction, it is based on factual literature found in the Bible. Book #7, here I come!

What if you did have the power to stop a killer before he killed everyone you knew and loved? That is the question the plagues several main characters who are each determined to be the Assassin as prophesized in The Book of Revelations. This assassination is key to the transition for Nicolae Carpathia to fulfill the next step in his final days. Without this event he cannot claim to be God and raise himself from the dead.

Rayford Steele wants to destroy the man who killed his wife Amanda. Buck Williams wants to reveal Nicolae as the AntiChrist through his cyberspace magazine. Tsion is determined to preach in Jerusalem, though it is more dangerous for him to do so than for any other man. Hattie Durham, the former airline stewardess and Carpathia's mistress, wants to vanquish the man who impregnated and then abandoned her. And those who were under the mind control of the AntiChrist, but have been freed, have their own special vengeance to deliver.

So, the question is: The assassination begins the second half of the seven year tribulation, and it must be done, but when the motive is based in hatred, how can it be God's work? That's the conundrum I see.

LaHaye and Jenkins address this question several times, but do not have an answer either. However, they seem to be riding the crest of their own writing and it has become stronger. Cliffhangers actually hang, surprises are just that, and the killer is unexpected. The question of right or wrong is a personal one.

This is another adventure in the ride through the end-times. It is fiction, there is a great deal of doctrine liberally doled out, and it is based on the last book of the Bible. This one has good cliff hanging escapades throughout.

I'm sure one of the reasons that I like this series is that the philosophy parallels my own. But such are all reviews - simply personal opinions. I've read six, and I'll read six more.

This one let me down a little. I love the series as a whole, but I think Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins had a cold streak on this one. Compared to The Mark or Soul Harvest it doesn't hold up. But ya can't go skippin' books now can you? Force your way through it. You don't even wanna know what I thought of The Indwelling. I'll skip that review.

'Assassins: Assignment: Jersalem, Target: AntiChrist,' book #6 of the 'Left Behind series' reaches it's climatic confrontation of the forces of good and evil battle for supermacy in a world without leadership. A Horde of 200 million demonic horsemen slays a third of the world population. The Tribulation Force face the future as fugitives risking their lives to warn others of the Great Deception of the AntiChrist. It's here that history and prophecy come together in Jerusalem for the most breathless and explosive episode in a plot to destroy the AntiChrist as foretold in Revelation 13:1-2.

The sixth book in the series starts three years and two months into the tribulation. Helpfully, the book starts with a rundown of the major characters, who they are, where their loyalties lie, etc. Along with the terrifying horesmen of Revelation, the story covers an explosive assasination attempt at the Johannesburg airport, and the loss and addition of old and new tribulation force members. We FINALLY see the death of Carpathia in this book, and the cliffhanger ending leaves the reader wanting to start the next book immediately.

Assassins picks up shortly after the last few afflicted by the Demon Locusts in Apollyon have recovered. Rayford Steele is getting a very itchy trigger finger, a Trib. Force member dies, and 200 or so million horsemen gallop around the globe, choking and burning unbelievers to death.

Not a happy time for all involved, and it shows. Assassins is a more somber and mature chapter than Apollyon as the Believers continue to wage war against the AntiChrist's growing power, but what is the point? The outcome is predetermined and, rather than continually lying, cheating, and stealing, shouldn't these believers be trying to convert and save the lost? Although the story is still told in Jenkins's trademarked breezy and action emphasizing style, the author does have his characters confront some serious ethical issues (especially Rayford, who is coming apart at the seams in this outing) and, while this does rob the book of some level of escapist fun, it makes for a more thoughtful read than one would expect from a Left Behind book. Recommended.

(Hide Review...)  ANOTHER GREAT BOOK IN THE SERIES

This is a series of books that is rare, one of those books that are great to read and have all good stuff in it. No senseless violence,no sex, and no curse words at all. All the books leading up to #6 build the intensity of this book. Rayford is one of those characters you feel really sorry for and feel the anger and pain in him. At times in the book you actually may feel compelled to his darker side, the side that wants to spill the AntiChrist's blood. Also, the appearance of the 200 millon demonic horseman in the book add some zest to the book. The ending is the best: Who is the killer of Nicolai Carpathia and now that he is dead is the Tribulation Force and the world in for perhaps the worst part of the Tribulation period? All in all a great book like the rest of the series and I think it is a book for the times we live in: it gives us something to look to and pray to.

"Assassins" sixth in the LEFT BEHIND series continues with Revelation's prophecy. As Rayford Steel and newest member of the Tribulation force search for her property they are attacked by G C forces. Only the sudden appearence of the 200 million demonic horseman save them from capture and sure death. The demonic horseman, visable only to believers, destroy one third of the remaining unbelievers leading to the predicted death of The Wailing Wall Witnesses. Riveting drama, authentic dialogue and captivating action will keep readers engrossed from beginning to the end and the cliffhanger ending will have them out buying the next in the series.

Half way through this, I couldn't go on any longer. The story is important. Its message of salvation through Jesus Christ couldn't be any more meaningful in our day and age. But the writing is terrible. Even the character names are downright silly. Rayford Steele is supposed to convey his strength. Buck Williams is supposed to connote his independence. Nicolai Carpathia is intended to reflect his heritage. The characters so named and their various antagonists are as wooden as I have ever seen in published fiction. I think Jerry Jenkins is also the creator and writer of the sports comic strip, "Gil Thorp". That's what you get here. Bible prophesy as portrayed in the daily comics. But you have to admire and wonder at the success of the series. In the end though, lovers of the art of fiction will have an extremely difficult time hanging with this series. Moreover, the ontological foundation of this series is based on a fairly recent twist on "judeo-christian" eschatology that is ahistorical and anti-Scriptural. In fact, one could make a good case that the writing and the attendant clandestine political program is, in fact, anti-Christ.

This book concerns the second Woe and introduces more believers to the readers. The due time has come for the two Witnesses and the agreement with Israel.

Reading the books of this series is like having M&Ms; it is hard to stop with one. You will find yourself looking for the next book since you'll finish this one in a day or two.

Jenkins does not always resolve issues with his story. We know the GC will break the agreement with Israel, but you never really notice it. The tension is built up, but then just mentioned and forgotten. I would think it would get more attention than it did.

I would recommend this book.

Assassins picks up the series without pausing, the safe house of Floyd, Rayford, Chloe, Buck, Tsion and the newcomer Leah continuing the fight against Nicolae Carpathia. This time several of the characters wrestle with the foretold killing of the Potentate as to who might be directed to perform the deed. In fact we are left with a cliffhanger making you reach eagerly for the next installment.
An assortment of faithful supporting actors all contribute to the tension. Only one 'plague' is visted in this episode (well two, if you count the earthquake after the murders of Moishe and Eli) - that of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (or Four Fallen Angels of the Euphrates, to follow the authors). It is particularly well told this 'plague'. You can really see the two million horsemen sweeping the globe in all their terrible glory. What works brilliantly at the conclusion is the voice from heaven.
The development of Leon Fortunato is welcomed and you begin to pity his naivety whilst gaining frustration with the stupidity of Chaim. The only minor problem with this installment is Rayford's sudden discomposure and unease of mind. It just doesn't match the preceding novels development of his character and given their is no real explanation for it, to my mind, is not believable. Nevertheless, another fine installment in an engrossing series. On to the next one!

This books, while I am sure not intentional, seriously undermines christianity. Due to such books, where prophecy is taken literally, christianity is now mocked by thousands. Sadly enough, prophecy books based on accuracy and based on the Scriptures don't sell as well. It is now obvious that the vast majority of christians in America are more concerned with fiction than reality.

Where can I even start with pointing out the out-of-control interpretations in this series? To point our just a few:

- LaHaye's presentation of Antichrist as one individual or one person is simply NOT biblical. There are many antichrists, and they were already around when the New Testament was written: 1 John 2:18; 1 John 4:3; 2 John 7

- LaHaye's literal presentation of large locusts with human heads flying in the skies is also out of control. Very often, prophets in the Bible use the comparison of soldiers with locusts: Nahum 3:17; Judges 7:12; Judges 6:5

- why are the locusts literal, and why is the beast symbolic? Maybe a literal beast with literal 7 heads would have been too much for the reader to handle? LaHaye is everything but consistent when interpreting prophecy. If Revelation 20 talks about a literal thousand years, then why isn't everything else literal as well, like the lake of fire, the serpent, the chain? Of course, if that is the case, it would be quite an adventure to throw Satan, which is not a physical being, or death and Hades, which are not material things, into a physical lake of fire.

The author is so inconsistent with his understanding of Revelation, that he is caught in his own maze of interpretations in order to justify his beliefs about the "end of the world". Unfortunately many readers would much rather believe what LaHaye tells them, instead of reading the Bible for themselves and find out the truth.

It may come as a surprise to many christian readers that the first century christians, including the apostles, believed that the Second Coming of Christ would take place during their lifetimes, and in fact it happened, just as Christ said. LaHaye maybe is not aware of the following passages:

- Malachi 4:5 and Matthew 17:11. It is obvious that Malachi is not talking about the birth of Christ, because the birth of Jesus did not "burn like a furnace", and it was not a "dreadful" day. Jesus said that Elijah who was to come was John the Baptist. There was only ONE Elijah, and not more. John was that Elijah that was to come right before the Day of the Lord comes.

- Matthew 24 is about "the end of the age", no about the end of the world, like LaHaye takes it to mean. It is clear that Jesus indeed talks about the destruction of Jerusalem at which time, He will return with power and great glory to destroy the jewish system that proved to have no power against sin, and was a threat to christians

- If Mathew 24 indeed talks about "the end of the world", why would Jesus tell people to run to the mountains? That makes no sense whatsoever.

- Also Jesus repeatedly told his apostles that "the end of the age" which is the jewish age, will take place during their lifetimes: Matthew 23:36; Matthew 24:34; Matthew 16:28; Mark 13:23; Luke 21:32; Matthew 10:23

- Why is LaHaye ignoring all the New Testament references which clearly point to an imminent return of Christ? Could it be because if the Second Coming was a matter of the past, he would no longer be able to sell his books? Indeed, read Romans 16:20; Hebrews 8:13; Rev 1:1; Rev 3:11; Rev 22:6,7,12,20; 1 John 2:18; 1 Peter 4:7; 1 John 2:18

- Jesus does not return on a physical cloud in the skies. God used such imagery in the past in prophecy, like in Isaiah 19:1

Is it indeed clear, from the Bible, not from the Left Behind series, that our Lord returned when He said, soon, during that generation, when the temple in Jerusalem was destroyed by the romans, and the jewish system, which was a threat to christianity was wiped out. How can LaHaye, Jenkins, or the reader, when presented with such overwhelming biblical proof, can still promote this book series as fact when in fact it has no basis in the Bible? I will let the reader answer that question.

A horde of 200 million horsemen, visible only to believers, slay a third of the world's population. As they are not visible to non-believers, the phenomenon is blamed on something else.

The two witnesses, Eli and Moishe are killed by Carpathia and their bodies are laft to rot. But after 3 days the corpses are gone.

Nicolae Carpathia suffers the lethal head wound that is prophecied.

This is an excellent series and I recommend it to all.

The next book in the series is "The Indwelling"

Maybe the previous book spoiled me but Assassins was SO very tedious until maybe two thirds of the way through that I found myself rushing just to get it over with. It dragged and droned with cardboard speeches and a sudden character morph. In any series of fiction a willing suspension of disbelief is needed. I was unable to generate it here. One of the strengths of the series is the possibility that this can happen. It is the thing that made the Exorcist the most frightning movie i've ever seen. This book loses that sense till near the very end. Every writer is entitled to one lemon, hopefully the is Lahaye's and Jenkins only one.

Actually, I give this book, and the series, no stars. The best that can be said is that if you enjoy science fiction, you could read it in the same sense that you would read Buck Rodgers.

If you are looking for a Biblical view of Christian eschatology, this series is helpful in that it informs you of everything that the Bible doesn't say on the topic. If you are looking for something sensational to read without it being accurate, then here is your "Christian" Buck Rodgers.
