| The Chronicles of Narnia Boxed Set | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Collection includes all seven of the novels in the series.
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
The Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis, is one of the very few sets of books that should be read three times: in childhood, early adulthood, and late in life. In brief, four children travel repeatedly to a world in which they are far more than mere children and everything is far more than it seems. Richly told, populated with fascinating characters, perfectly realized in detail of world and pacing of plot, and profoundly allegorical, the story is infused throughout with the timeless issues of good and evil, faith and hope. This boxed set edition includes all seven volumes.

Great Books well written from an author you can trust when giving your children summer reading.
I chose to pull books by Tamora Pierce from my 13 year old daughter after glancing into them to find uncontrolable passions of the teen aged heroine, plus mentioning the use of magic for birth control. Uncontrolable passion is never a good thing if we are truthful. Even my distain of rap! C.S. Lewis was a good guy and a great author! There is everything to like from these "Great, Clean, Fun Books! The Service as always was perfect! Thank You! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-05 07:46:16 EST)

i first read these books as a complete set when working in a refugee camp in thailand. they blew my mind then as had done the reading to me of the voyage of the dawn treader as a young boy at bording school. i love these books they are most special, but dont come up to the level of lord of the rings... in my opinion. still, i reckon second only to lord of the rings and none other fantasy fiction can meet this standard, except perhaps the never ending story.
with love, from, snow-flake. xxx (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-28 06:03:50 EST)

The content of these books is wonderful, as always with C.S. Lewis' works. Upon receipt of the product I was disappointed to find that 5 of the books in the set have "Now a Major Motion Picture" printed inside a bold yellow circle on the front cover.
This was not shown on any of the product images that I saw before I made my purchase, so it was an unexpected and unpleasant surprise when I opened the box. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-27 06:04:38 EST)

The Chronicles of Narnia are a great way of helping children begin to understand a relationship, adventure, life and characteristics of Jesus Christ. They were written by a Christian man who knew Jesus personally and who was able to express Jesus' personality in a way children could grasp. I love the imagination he uses and the character of Aslan. I love most of all the forgiveness Edmund receives and how Aslan sacrificed himself for Edmund. A great picture of our spiritual need as a human race as a whole; our greatest need is forgiveness.

I am learning more about Narnia besides The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrove. I already read the first book, and I am part way into the third book. I already read LWW and know what happened in that book, so I skipped it. I wanted to know the whole story of Narnia, as well as have another book series in my collection.

Once I started reading the first of the seven books, I COULD NOT stop reading! As I finished each book, I couldn't wait to get to the next one. There's something spellbinding about C.S. Lewis's work, and I firmly believe that it's because it was God-inspired.
I've never been one who enjoyed reading books about centaurs, fauns, and other mythological creatures; but this amazing Christian allegory kept my attention from start to finish! The only thing I regret about reading this series is that I waited until I retired from a career as a public school teacher to read it! It makes me sad to think of the vast number of students that I could have encouraged to read it. This, in my opinion, is a must-read for anyone who sees God as a judgmental, harsh, punishing Being. I believe that reading these seven books in the allegorical sense will help that person gain a greater understanding of the all-encompassing love that God shows for his children through Jesus Christ. May Aslan and all of the other allegorical characters continue to instruct, entertain, and inspire readers of all ages for many decades to come! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-15 08:04:44 EST)

Buying the 7 books in peaces but all together in a box is certainly the best option. There're like pocket books and you can carry the one you're reading always with you. Plus, the printing and the finishing are really beautiful. No mention the story itself, wich takes you to a hole new and pure place, if you enjoy stories like these (like the movies? you'll like the books even better. like harry potter? I bet you'll like this too).
Amazon shipping was again perfect and cheap. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-14 04:58:46 EST)

I bought the set for my grandchildren. Before passing them on, I read the set to ensure it was safe for them to read. The bottom line is that this is a classic set and worth turning each page and reading each word. This is a set you could read to your children or read with your children enjoying each minute.

If you just want to read the books and toss them, this is the set to buy. The books are wonderful for all ages 10-100. This is not a boxed set for a collector though. The books and the box are cheaply made and will not stand up to much use.

I think of all the options available at Amazon, this is the most cost-effective. The only thing I recommend doing is to read the books in their original published sequence and not the chronological timeline. The reasons for reading this by chronology is simply thin--despite what the book description may say at the back of this volume. Besides, you lose the mystery of discovering Narnia through the Wardrobe. There is a strong aspect of milieu-discovery within these stories. To read them by chronological order removes the sense of exploration. Besides, the chronological ordering destroys the otherwise continuous narrative of the Pevensie children and--to a degree--destroys the 4th wall.
In short: Buy this book 'cuz it's cheaper :) Go to the copyrights page and read the stories according to their publish date for the authentic and more complete experience. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-27 00:59:08 EST)

This box set is beautiful and in paperback. Basically, it's cheap but quality at the exact same time. Totally worth every penny simply for the aesthetic of it. However, it is even better once immersed in the books themselves which captivate but can be read and loved at eight years old although they have a truly different meaning by nineteen. Also, rather than ordered in the numbers of chronological publishing, they are in the order affirmed by Lewis himself by the timing within the books. Wonderful and well done. Lewis would have approved and I approve of Lewis' glorious, fantastical, and unique work.

The Chronicles of Narnia are everything that I remember them being. As a child I read through the entire series. Every chapter leaves you wanting to know more and I was sad when the last book came to an end. Now re-reading them as an adult has left me with the same feeling of not wanting it to end. If you are looking for a magical adventure to share with your children this is it. If you want something that you can read by their bedside each night I recommend getting the Complete Chronicles of Narnia. The whimsical illustrations add to the charm of the book. It is also fun to open the huge book with the ribbon marker. And I got it new $15 cheaper here than from other stores!

The book set was quite lovely. All the books came in a nice box but there were two details that bothered me, they were placed in an order that's not as nice to be read in as their original order and they put these ugly black circles on the bottom right corner of a couple of the books that say, "now a major motion picture." other then that, great books, definitely worth it.

These seven books are books that any fan of fantasy literature must have. I read these books when I was a child, again as a teen and once more as an adult. I look forward to reading them again and again because I always find something new in the pages.
I have also enjoyed the first two Narnia movies. The BBC made movies out of four of these books, but they did not have the same computer animation technology that we have now, so they may seem somewhat dated. Anyway, back to the books... My only problem with the boxed sets and the individual books as they have been repackaged and sold is that they are no longer in the order that C.S. Lewis wrote them in. I have to believe that he wrote the books in a particular order for a reason, so we ought to read them in that order. The original order (and the order of my original boxed set) is as follows: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair, The Horse and His Boy, The Magician's Nephew, and The Last Battle. Chronologically from the founding of Narnia, the books run thus: Magician's Nephew, Lion Witch Wardrobe, Horse and His Boy, Prince Caspian, Silver Chair, Last Battle. I strongly suggest that you read them in the order they were written. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-28 01:11:33 EST)

It is great having all of these stories in one big, beautiful book. We are soon to start our 3rd time reading it. We have an 8 year old daughter and it is one of her favorite books - ever! She is an avid reader and her imagination and grounding have both been magnified from these stories. We read it aloud and she reads it by herself.

I truly feel that the Chronicles of Narnia are among the best literature ever written for children, or anyone for that matter. I love this complete set with its gorgeous cover and colored illustrations. It contains all seven stories that take us from the creation of Narnia to its destruction and what lies after that. Narnia is intrinsically oonnected to our world, both literally (or at least through magic) and spiritually/figuratively with Lewis' Christian parallels. I know many critics complain about the blatant religious overtones, but I feel that is the style. Even so, these are great adventure stories full of rich character development and sing-song descriptions. Lewis, if nothing else, certainly knows how to tell and organize a great story, and his imagination is incredible.

Sadly, the "Chronicles of Narnia" boxed set that I treasured as a child is out of print, so I decided to replace it with this collectible edition that contains all seven books in the series. I can't find any fault with the books themselves: These stories about four children who travel repeatedly to the world of Narnia are treasured classics. In this edition, the books are presented in the order that author C.S. Lewis preferred, which sucks. The correct order that I recommend is: 1.) "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe," 2.) "Prince Caspian", 3.) "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader," 4.) "The Silver Chair," 5.) "The Horse and His Boy," 6.) "The Magician's Nephew," and 7.) "The Last Battle." If you are new to Narnia, I highly suggest that you read the books in the order I listed here. If you read the books in the sequence they are arranged in the book, you will be very disappointed because everything will happen out of order. Also, I was a little disappointed with the quality of the book itself...the binding cracked almost as soon as I opened the book. Still, for $14.95, this edition is a steal, and the Narnia books are just as enjoyable to me now as they were when I was a young girl.

I picked up the complete Chronicles of Narnia having run out of Harry Potter books to enjoy, and curious to see the similarities and differences between these fantasy series written for children. Prior to reading them I had heard they were very simplistic, to the point of being almost condescending to the reader. Upon reading the series, I felt that given the time difference between when these books were written, they actually will provide a sufficient challenge for young readers (language use and historical contexts alone will provide learning opportunities), while also remaining relatively interesting for adult readers. The books are quite simplistic in the sense that they all focus on one key element per book - all subplots and meanderings only contribute to the final showdown per book.
The pros to the Narnia series is they feel like they are the originators of many of the elements of fantasy novels we see today - although this might make the books feel a bit tired to people who have read lots of books in the fantasy genre, it's interesting to see them from the point of view of a mid-20th-century children's author. The books are rarely controversial in their content in terms of violence or content (save for one case outlined below), although there are plenty of obvious religious allegories sprinkled throughout. The books teach good morals, are evenly paced, and will capture the imagination of younger readers. Perhaps the most brilliant piece of all that will entice older readers is picking up the threads - sometimes very subtle ones - between each story that tie them together. In terms of negatives, parents should be aware of the religious implications of these stories - whether or not that affects the enjoyment of these stories is to be determined. The Chronicles of Narnia are *not* the Harry Potter series - they are much less character-based and much more focused on plot elements and how they build up to the major morals of each tale. As a result, most of the characters are very flat and two-dimensional, and also limited by the time period in which they were written. As a result the female characters are often given stereotypical treatment as 'Damsels in Distress' or the 'Nurturing Mother Figure'. Most of the characters in "The Horse & His Boy" are also relatively offensively written as the story is set in a Middle Eastern land, which might explain why this particular story is often overlooked (it also barely figures into the entire Narnia landscape). The neatest thing about this series is comparing what order the books were written versus what order they are presented in the story - the preferred author's sequence - and the chronological order of the events which happen. "The Magician's Nephew" actually starts off the books yet was written second last - it's basically a prequel to the famed "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" that details the birth of Narnia and many of the familiar elements that crop up in TLTWATW such as the lantern and the White Witch. "The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe" is perhaps the most famous Narnia book, not just because it was recently made into a film but because it is truly one of the most enjoyable books in the series. It follows four war-torn siblings as they venture into Narnia, unaware of the prophecies that surround them and the destruction the White Witch has wreaked on this magical world. The third book is "The Horse & His Boy", a forgettable tale that rarely focuses on Narnia but moreso the journey of a young peasant boy trying to get there. "Prince Caspian" will likely be the next big Narnia book based on the movie release, which sees the four Pensevie children return to Narnia yet again only to find they've actually missed over 1000 years of Narnian history, and the land is once again under threat when the next ruler is exiled from his own kingdom. "The Voyage of Dawn Treader" was a surprising favourite of mine that let Lucy & Edmund, and their cousin Eustace, return to Narnia a year after their last visit to go on a seaworthy journey to the ends of the earth, while "The Silver Chair" read more like filler with Eustace and his classmate Jill Pole returning to Narnia yet again (although the underground scenes were entertaining). The final chapter in the series "The Last Battle" provided a somewhat satisfying and mostly surprising end to the books - although perhaps not so much when the religious overtones are considered. The most enjoyable aspect of this particular book was the sweeping nature of bringing together nearly all of the characters (or at least their stories), although the story itself seemed a bit too single-handed in focusing on the aforementioned last battle. Overall this is a good series to try out if you're craving some fantasy books. They're different from what's out there today, it's just up to you to interpret whether this is a good or bad thing. I understand people's objections to this edition of the Chronicles of Narnia and in a way I concur with them.I have read these book over 30 times over the last 40 years and of course I know the correct order. The reason I got this edition is so that I can have them in an easily transportable form to carry with me.There is nothing better than the boxed set with them in order but for convenience sake this one is okay

THE MAGICIAN'S NEPHEW Sixth book printed, first book chronologically. I began re-reading the Narnia series after coming across a beautiful boxed set of all seven novels. Mainly this was out of nostalgia, as these were favourites when I was young, and I was interested to see how they held up as adults. I found them all to be written very clearly with provocative descriptive prose, and narrative that often draws the reader immediately into the story. "The Magician's Nephew" is more clearly a children's tail than any of the other stories. In terms of construction is it relatively formulaic compared to the other novels, beginning with the children discovering strange rings which transport them to Narnia in its period of creation. This is where the book differs from the others in the sequence. We get to see Narnia created from almost nothing, the birth or "arrival" of the godly Aslan, and the seeds of "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe" in particular. The Christian metaphors are laid on a little thickly here, but a child wouldn't notice them, nor would the allusions to Christ or Adam and Eve spoil their enjoyment. As an adult I found the story very readable, but sadly insubstantial compared to "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe" or "Prince Caspian". 7/10 THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE First book printed, second book chronologically. This is, of course, the most recognisable title of the series as well as being the first written/published. Most readers will pick up the book hoping for a written account of the events in the recent film, or perhaps the BBC drama series if your memory goes back that far! For the most part the events are the same, although elements are extracted and expanded upon in the films making the novel a little pale in comparison. It is not however lacking in terms of character or charm, and is an alluring tale that sucks the reader in instantly despite the intrusion of the narrator at times. The protagonists, places and events are described straight-forwardly with insightful touches that enhances the specific element that brings the scenes to life. Even as a "grown up" who was only mildly interested in the story to begin with, I found the story absorbing and even inspirational. 8.5/10 THE HORSE AND HIS BOY Fifth book printed, third book chronologically. "The Horse and His Boy" stands out from the rest of the series, having little or nothing to do with any of the other characters. The great Aslan makes a few appearances, and his scarcity accentuates the presence that Lewis no doubt felt strongly in his heart. As a total atheist and condemner of religious analogies, even I felt a touch of wonder at each of his appearance! The story is sound despite being removed from the over-arcing story of the Chronicles. The main character and his companion horse are well drawn and interesting. The features of the countries outside Narnia are bright and interesting, particularly if you've read the other books in the series. The book manages to carry its own weight, which some of the sequels to "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe" fail to do. An achievement, and worth picking up! 7/10 PRINCE CASPIAN Second book printed, fourth book chronologically. As the first real sequel to "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe", this manages to draw out the story and history of Narnia so that Lewis' creation reaches its full potential. The character of Caspian is readable although a little stiff at times, and the dialogue does falter occasionally where elsewhere in the books it is very smooth. The description of the voyage and the encounters of the crew are imaginative and still feel very original, and the transformation of Eustace still brings a bit of a chill, even in hindsight! Great for youngsters and very readable for grown-ups. 8.5/10 THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER Third book printed, fifth book chronologically. This one's a fine companion to "Prince Caspian" and feels more like the second half of that novel rather than a novel in its own right, but this doesn't stop the enjoyment of the tail despite the feeling of implausibility that the reader gets at times. The growth of the characters following previous instalments is tangible and feels authentic however, and the whole thing is as entertaining as the books set before it. 7.5/10 THE SILVER CHAIR Fourth book printed, sixth book chronologically. The series falters here a little with a fairly uninspired story, broken down into a series of events that give the reader the sense that Lewis was getting a little weary with the universe he had created. As though bored of Narnia, he takes us away from that and all familiar characters but one, an admittedly well-realised Eustace. Although it opens very well, despite Lewis interjecting regularly with his own poorly-disguised opinions on the world in general and certain types of schools in particular. Unfortunately once the story kicks in it feels a touch rushed and uninspired, the return of Caspian unemotive, and the silver chair of the title almost totally inconsequential. It's not an awful read, but there's little hear for adults and probably not a great deal for youngsters, although I would admittedly be guessing about that. 5/10 THE LAST BATTLE Seventh and final book. This final book in the Chronicles of Narnia series thankfully returns to the early splendour of "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe". After "The Silver Chair", which seemed a little flat compared to other books in the series, "The Final Battle" restores some of the magic that made the first few novels so enjoyable and successful. Lewis does well in beginning the novel from the point of view of the Narnians, specifically the last King of Narnia, instead of the from the childrens' perspective. We begin to see a particularly brave story develop from who is essentially a Christian author: A false Aslan has begun corrupting Narnia from within, who eventually comes under the thrall of the vicious realm adjacent to Narnia. Considering the powerful although admittedly insipid themes that Lewis is fond of, it seems a brave move to take his allegory so far. As a child the danger must read very real, and as an adult it is interesting to see the mythology of Lewis' realm with his potentially fully drawn. Cracking characters and a smooth, compelling storyline make this one of the best of the series, as good as "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe" and a fantastic, thrilling and emotional end to the book series. 8.5/10 (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-04-23 05:41:54 EST)

I never read these books growing up- but was enamored with the cartoon movie version of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe". I finally bought this compilation book and once I started it- COULD NOT put it down! Each page you turn keeps you wanting for more. I also love how C.S. Lewis parallels Aslan with the Lord- such a good depiction of what Jesus did for us (of course not even close to the sacrifice He gave for us!)
One of my favorite parts is when Lucy is talking to Aslan about never returning to Narnia again- he tells her that this will be her last time there. She is extremely saddened by this and can't imagine not seeing him again... his reply is not to worry, but that he exists in her world too... that he just goes by a different name there and it's up to her to figure out who he is... so powerful! I read this book years ago when I was younger and have been looking for it ever since. All chapters in one novel is ideal, even though its not in chronological order, that is the only let-down with this book.
Other then that, it was a delight to read again, a charming story with great characters, a must read for all ages. I highly recommend this book to avid readers of this genre. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-04-06 05:46:33 EST)

First off, let me just say, for everyone that INSISTS that these books be read in order of publication YOU ARE WRONG! Although I'm sure the whole mystery of story development and all that is good for keeping you guessing at how things happened, I personally, don't like picking up in the middle of a series. Who would want to start Harry Potter with the 2nd book and then read the 4th book then the 1st book? No one, it doesn't really make sense, right? These books CAN be read both ways, but even as C.S. Lewis himself pointed out, his preferred order is CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER. So if you buy this omnibus of all the Chronicles, you should just start with page one and read it in order all the way through. I'm so glad I am reading it that way. For example, if you don't you'll be wondering where the lamp post came from for several books before you know how it got there. Also since these books have strong Biblical ties, the first book, The Magician's Nephew, has a strong relationship with the Boook of Genesis from the Bible. Why would you want to read Exodus before you read Genesis? You wouldn't.
My wife got me this book for Christmas and it was a wonderful gift. This is a great book for any age. The stories are great for a kid, yet for an adult, you can really analyze the aspects of Christianity and have fun making the comparisons. Really great books! I got the paperback version, because I prefer paperbacks as a read. No dust covers to keep up with and I'm always bad about leaving fingerprints on the hardcovers. I don't know if anyone else has that problem. Still this would be a great book to get in hardcover to keep for many many years. I may purchase the hardcover just for that reason. Read these books INSTEAD of the Golden Compass! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-27 05:54:32 EST)

It is the classic novels. I liked having the series broken up into individual books (I have seen it before all bound together). They are easy reads and very enjoyable!

I really think that this book is one that everyone should read. It has a really beautiful story line. It is rather simplistic to read, but the story moves fast and I really didn't notice any slow points; nothing that I skipped through. I really, really enjoyed it! I suggest it to anyone who is looking to suspend reality but also looking for inspiration.

That is no question about the books themselves is classic and excellent readings. But the quality of the paperback is poor. If you are building up your own library and want to have quality books, it is better going to B&N bookstore, at lease you can feel the pages before making a purchase. Needless to say, that is what I will be doing from now on.

He is an example of a scam I've noticed Amazon is pulling. They indicate a product is in stock when it is not. They get you to buy it from them instead of someone else. It took Amazon 6 days for my niece (birthday present) to get this book when I paid for next day shipping. When I called to complain, they told be it was common for them to advertise an item as in stock when it's actually "expected soon". They did not refund my extra shipping charge and I look like a heal to my sister. When I called three days later to check status, they said it was out of stock even though the web site still says "In-Stock". I asked to speak with a manager, was put on hold for 30 minutes, and then I was automatically transfered to the general customer service que. This is not the first time I experienced this with Amazon and I've written my CT Attorney's General to complain about this abuse. I suggest that other who have had this problem do the same. It's too bad. I found it's not possible to leave seller feedback when Amazon is the sellar. Duh!

The absolute best of the genre. The Chronicles are the epitome of fantasy and adventure. Enjoyed it as a youngster and still love it as a senior! You will not find a better told story. C.S. Lewis rocks!

This series is magical and amazing. Every book is a wholly original fantasy played out with compelling and believable characters. There's drama, tragedy, pathos and comedy. The over-arching plot of the series works flawlessly, with each book containing its own self-sufficient narrative. 5 stars!

The chronicles of Narnia is my favorite series of books ever. The books were interesting when I was a child and are even more interesting now that I am an adult. After rereading the books, I was able to pick out and appreciate the religious symbolism and the books gained a different meaning to me. I didn't have a problem with the order they were in, as each book can stand by itself, but if you prefer to read them in a certain way, just go to the right section in the book. The only dissappointment I have with this series is that it ended, and I didn't like the way it ended.(Spoilers)Everyone dies except Susan and Narnia is basically what heaven looks like. I didn't what there to be a definate end, but I still enjoy reading the books. I think I finished reading all of them in about a week.
