Too Big for Diapers

Baby Ernie is too big for diapers! He's ready to try out his brand-new potty. It may take a few tries, but soon Ernie learns he can use the potty all by himself!

I didn't find this very encouraging. The wording was unimpressive and the only draw was the baby Ernie.

This is a great little book that has enough pages that my child was able to remain interested in it long enough so that he would sit on the potty for a few minutes.

I think this is a good aid to potty training.

I've purchased a lot of potty books and this one is just ok. My daughter enjoys the pictures. There's not much to read (which can be good), but the phrasing is a little...I'm not sure of the right word, maybe just different. I kind of throw in my own words on each page and my daughter seems to enjoy my version.

My daughter has two other potty books she likes better: Tinkle, Tinkle, Little Tot and The Potty Book for Girls. Hope my review helps.

Baby Ernie is cute but this book was too short and simplistic for our 2-year-old. Hardly any text. It didn't offer much information. It's more like a baby's book, and babies don't need to learn about using potties! I've seen MUCH better books out there on potty-training.

There are other books that are better for potty training. But it is a nice companion to the Elmo potty training DVD. At the end of the DVD they have an interactive version of this book when you place the DVD into your computer. So you might want to combine them during the training process.

This is a cute book about Ernie growing up from a baby to a big boy. It's best feature is talking about leaving toys/playtime to run to the potty. My 2 1/2 year old son had it memorized by about the 3rd reading and requests this book often. This is not an in-depth potty training book for kids but rather an "easy read" to help motivate your child to use the potty chair.

The story in this book is lame. My son likes the pictures but that is about it. Also, It has a picture of Ernie wrapped up in toilet paper. It does say Don't use too much Ernie, but my son liked the idea of that picture and now does the same with the toilet paper. I have seen many better books for potty training.

This book is short and straight to the point. It helped as a reminder or refresher book as my son had occasional "accidents" because he did not want to stop playing. The book reminds children that they are big now and that they can stop playing to go "potty" and that their toys will be there when they get back. The book is not too long or overwhelming which keeps it simple.

This book is way to imature for a child that is old enough to be learning to use the potty. It is a good book if you want to start exposing your child at around 12 months, but does not speak to the level of a 2.5 year old.

(Hide Review...)  Good for short attention span
Reviewer Permalink
Our 3 1/2-year-old grandson has shown little interest in the potty or books. In looking for a positive way to inspire him, I bought this book, even though on the surface I would have hoped he'd outgrown board books (mommy doesn't read to him to build up his attention span). Because it features Ernie, however, he instantly loved it, and will listen to it while sitting on the potty. While it does not give much info, it is fine for generating that essential ingredient--enthusiasm. The only reason I didn't give it a 5-star rating is that the potty chair doesn't have a boy deflector--weird choice on the part of the editors for a boy Muppet--they must not have ever cleaned spray off the floor and walls of the bathroom! As both someone who's trained 2 grown boys (both at 3+; most boys take longer to start, and my [gentle] suggestion is to just wait to start instead of setting them up for failure) and as a teacher of young children, I recommend this book if your child is on the younger side or a Sesame Street fan who is struggling with this milestone. For a more in-depth discussion, I love (my sons loved) the Mr. Rogers book, but I haven't looked for it lately--might be at your local library if not on Amazon.

This book requires a good amount of parental embellishment to fill in all the blanks the books leaves re: learning to use the "potty." It has great potential, but doesn't quite go far enough (it is very short). I give it 3 stars because it's Sesame so most kids will like seeing the characters & it's a good jumping off point anyway. Like most of these books, it stresses use of a separate potty chair rather than a potty insert on the adult toilet (see the Dora the Explorer Potty book with flushing sound button for a good alternative).

(Hide Review...)  Not the best book out there, but not really bad, either
Reviewer Permalink
This book is not too bad, if you are just looking for something for your little one to read that is in the "toilet-learing" theme. However, this book doesn't really give much help in that direction, and has one problem (according to me). The page with Ernie wrapped up in toilet paper just doesn't seem to me to be helpful, and I wish my son had never seen it. He's always been fascinated with the roll of paper in the bathroom, and now here is Ernie smiling at him with paper strewn all over. Not a great message, but we talk about this not being the thing to do, so it isn't too bad, either. (The text on that page says, "Don't use too much [paper], Ernie". The book isn't advocating that behavior, but the picture is not a helpful one.)

I would recommend "Sesame Beginnings: Potty Time!" over this book.

Reviewer Permalink
Our now 18 month old son has had this for a few months now, and it has been a favorite of his. He started asking for Ernie every night before bed. We aren't really using it for potty training- we might start trying that in a few months- but it's a great introduction for little ones. It is very short and simple, and he loves the pictures (I think because they're photos and not illustrated?). I figure it can't hurt to get him familiar with the idea of using the potty, and it's a super quick read. Even if it's not effective for training, it is good for entertainment, and the pictures are great!

We also have another Sesame Steet potty book "Potty Time!", and he loves that too. It's a little longer than this one, and they get to flush at the end!

I was disappointed in the story of the book. The book is very short and I felt that when my daughter and I read it, there was not much room for discussion. Ernie makes the transition from diapers to underwear seem a bit too easy. Other books do a better job highlighting that it takes practice and time. Ernie never has an accident or doesn't even seem to object to not wearing a diaper. My daughter doesn't seem to understand why all of a sudden we are trying to potty train her because things seem to be just fine to her!

I got the feeling my son (2.5 yrs) could relate to Baby Ernie. The book addresses the subject of 'using the potty' rather succinctly and in terms that 2 year olds (and probably also 3 year olds) can relate to. The image of the baby crawling around with diapers works well, especially if there is a little sibling. I very much liked how it stressed that Ernie stops playing when he has to go pee/poo - this is usually our problem!
Have fun!

Based on the age of most toddlers learning potty training, this book was a dissapointment. It's great that it's Sesame Street and the pictures are simple and colorful, but it's only a few pages. My son (22 months) is just started to get engaged in the concept, and about 4 pages later the books done. This book would be more appropriate for an infant in simplicity if the theme wasn't for potty training aged readers.
