Advice from a Mom. This delightful book would make a great gift for young people and an interesting read for all of us. Would hope to see this book in all the public and school libraries.

I ordered this book from Amazon and although there was some wait, it was not too bad. I am in the process of reading it. It is very practical and I like the fact that my 14 yr. old likes it and agrees that a strong work ethic is important and a good thing. I also have an 11 yr. old who I want to read the book with. Money well spent.

I bought this book after hearing the authors plug on Rush Limbaugh. I liked the reason for the book and wanted to contribute. The book is a fun read. I had my 15 year old read it and she enjoyed it as well. I believe every kid in america should read this book.

I've grown up with a lot of the insights that these kids have and it was good to hear them again as a refresher. I'm also happy to hear that there are some good parents out there giving their kids real world education at home instead of relying on the government/schools to provide that, which they don't.

Read the book quickly and easily, and there are plenty of gems there for kids of all ages. We have begun to read excerpts to our five year old, and will use this text as a study guide for him when he is older. The ideas behind this book are what made America great more than two hundred years ago, and they can help bring us back to those times.

It was a cute book. I am glad I was able to support a young author. People should buy the book, if for no other reason but to encourage him to continue writing. It has some useful information regarding money and personal responsibility. Learning responsibility and how to handle money needs to start early in ones live, way before graduating high school and going into major debt.

This is the book that Rush Limbaugh promoted when one of its authors called his show asking about advertising rates. It's very basic money management and investment advice for kids. I'm giving it to my nephew who turns ten this fall.

The fact the Beatty Boys are donating proceeds from the sale of the book to the Marine Corps Law Enforcement fund was motive enough for me to buy a copy.

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for taking the time to read the book! The messages you all have left show say more for our country and its citizens than anything we've seen as children, practically ever! We wish every kid could feel the impact of what you all have done and stand for. The feeling of being part of the greatest country in world brings a desire to do better, succeed (at any level) and contribute to our futures. Even those who don't have positive things to say have made a contribution is showing the importance of our freedom.

We just wanted to say thank you and we really do wish you all the best!

Sincerely,
David, Devin, and Deric

Hello Everyone,

What an amazing experience this has been. In a time when we constantly hear all the things wrong with our citizens and our country - all the failures and warnings - what a difference you all have made. It is people like you who smile at others, encourage others, and hold out a hand when the going gets tough that help weave every fiber of our flag; which stands as a symbol to all of us, even if we are thousands of miles apart - that we are not alone as we attempt to do our best at even the simplest tasks.

Thank you all for your consideration. Even to those who have nothing positive to say; we've read your responses and they too have helped us by showing us how incredibly valuable our freedom is.

Sincerely,
David, Devin, and Deric

Rush was very gracious to these young men when he gave them some free air time and advice. I love how the book shot to #5 the next day. I bought it on the strength of the character that I perceived in the boy who spoke to Rush. My oldest son (10) loves to write and is very interested in how businesses work and make profit. I bought the book for him and his brother (8), but I wanted to read it first.

Well, I read it today and it is an excellent book! It uses wit and humor to get across a very mature understanding of morality, selflessness, good stewardship and good old fashion capitalism. As a parent, I got as much out of reading about the clever and engaging way that the boys' parents have of teaching them life lessons as I did reading the boys' insights. I may try some of these ideas myself!

I love the chapter on "Pulling Weeds" where the boys describe some of the jobs (or a better word, "activities") that they have done to raise money. They really put their hearts into everything they do. When they spoke about their "garage grocery store" I had one of those, "Now why didn't I think of that?" moments.

The chapter on "Tithing" was eye-opening as well. These boys believe in giving of their time, as well as money, and they describe ways that they have gone out into their community to do small good deeds for complete strangers.

Overall, I would recomend this book highly. I just wish it could have been longer; it was a pleasure to read.

I loved this little 5x7 104 page book. Even though I was aware of most of these principals of how to succeed in life just by being on earth so long, immediately after reading it I decided to start making my own bread, keep a written account of where every penny goes and have advertised on Craigs list about a small start up business I've been thinking about - just for starters. These boys got me up off my 70 year old, newly-retired-tiny-income backside to make a better life for myself. Thank you Beatty Boys. And.... when you go on the television shows to tell the nation about your book, please bring along your parents. They are extraordinary parents!!! I said 'EXTRAORDINARY'! What fabulous hands on help and direction they have given you. I would love to meet them. The best to all of you and I will be looking to hear wonderful things about you.

"Pulling Weeds" is a time-honored way for entrepreneurial boys to make some pocket money. More than that, pulling weeds taught the Beatty brothers (David, 16, Devin, 14, and Deric, 8) lessons about service-based jobs. From these nitty-gritty lessons in personal finances, they moved on to reading books, asking questions, listening to others, and putting what they learned about personal finances into practice. Setting goals, cutting expenses, avoiding debt, writing business plans, and investing their savings in the stock market have become a way of life for them.

"Picking Stocks" and investing in the stock market is an uncommon way for even the most enterprising of boys and girls to make money. The Beatty brothers are an exception to the rule. Sometime ago, Dad Beatty gave his boys $1,000 in make-believe money to invest in the stock market. He pointed the boys to Yahoo! Finance and the boys took it from there. First, they learned to look up stock tickers and read about companies. Then they advanced to comparing businesses and ranking industries. Step-by-step they picked up the jargon of Wall Street, a language not taught in their public schools.

"Pulling Weeds to Picking Stocks" is a small book filled with plain and simple lessons for life. Credit cards? Don't use them. In debt? Get out of it. Got income? Account for it. Spending money? Document it. Got a surplus? Invest it.

The Beatty brothers offer practical, sound advice for success in life. Live your life like you were running a business. Write a personal business plan for your life. Set goals. Believe in yourself.

Unexpectedly, this is a book with an unassailable lesson on tithing -- not just tithing your money, but tithing your time -- giving of yourself to help others. Helping begins at home, assisting Mom and Dad with the household chores. Then it expands to helping others. Peers may laugh at you but older people will appreciate you. The habit of tithing your time to help others will enrich your life, so say the Beatty brothers from their exemplary personal experiences.

My Favorite Beatty Quotes: (Dad Beatty) "Help others without looking for praise." (Mom Beatty) "You have a brain, use it!" (Beatty boys) "Give without being caught."

Bottom Line: This is a book about learning -- learning about businesses, learning about industries, learning about finances, learning about markets, learning about investing, and learning from mistakes. But chiefly, this is a book about learning self-reliance.

There is nothing in this book that I don't already know as an investor and as an informed senior citizen. But the lessons came much later in life for me. My interest in the stock market germinated in my twenties, not in my teens. My investments in the stock market commenced in my late thirties, not at pubescence. All I can say about the Beatty brothers is, "Wow!"

Do you know a youngster or two in middle school or junior high? I believe this book would make a significant gift that just might empower them for life.

The book was ok, but that's not the point.

Like others, I heard Rush talk about this 16 year old kid, writing this book to earn money to pay back the $30,000 the Marine Corps and Law Enforcement Fund helped his family with.

As a former infantry combat Marine from a long-ago other time, I contribute my puny little bit to this fund. The kid's book is extra.

End of review.

(I can wait till more are published... sounds like an excellent read!) Perhaps Ms. Pelosi should call Air- (Head)-America to get some advertising for her piece of liberal crap book...she obviously needs all the help she can get...(And Air-Head-America needs all the financial backing they can get!!!) Just goes to show the power of Rush, the power of Capitalism, The power of Conservatives and the TRUE spirit of the WORKING American people! This one will hit #1. (Sorry Ms. Pelosi.)

(Hide Review...)  Amazing success story!
Reviewer Permalink
On August 22nd, 2008, one of the authors of this book called in to Rush Limbaugh's radio show to ask how much advertising would be for the book that the Beatty Boys had written. Mr. Beatty explained the story of how the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation had helped in regards to their family, and how the family wanted to repay the MCLEF by donating $25,000 back to them with proceeds from the book. Rush explained that Mr. Beatty "really didn't want to know" how much advertising would be.

Rush, after hearing this story, did an amazing and remarkable thing. He asked the caller the name of the book. Then, how many pages. Next, who published it, and where it was available. Rush told the caller he had received about $35,000 worth of advertising. Apparently, one of Rush's staff members let Rush know it was on Amazon.com, so Rush went on to tell the audience the name of the book again, and that it was on Amazon.com. Rush explained to Mr. Beatty that he had received another $10,000 in advertising.

The amazing thing is the power of Rush Limbaugh's audience. When Mr. Beatty had called in, the book was ranked about #585,000 on Amazon's list. Less than 14 hours later, the book was ranked #5 on Amazon's list. As of August 25th, 2008, the book is ranked #4.

This is truly an amazing story of success, and as Rush Limbaugh pointed out to the boy, "it never hurts to ask".

Great Job, and good luck.

Unlike most of the reviewers here, I've actually read this book. I'm not making assumptions about that either; almost all of the reviews say something like "I think this is just great! I can't wait to read it!" Obviously you're not going to get much other than vacuous assertions from this audience anyway. Plenty of people will buy this book because it reassures their fantasies about the Capitalist gang-bang, but I doubt many will read it.

I read the book in about an hour. I was hoping the book would not be 100% predictable, but unfortunately it was. I certainly applaud the boys for writing a book about something that interests them at such a young age. Any young person writing a book with competency on any subject would deserve a few stars simply for that. Bravo.

However, it is one of the worst books I've ever read. The writing is awful. I wouldn't normally fault a group of kids too much for poor writing, but the subject matter is even worse. It is the unremarkable story of 3 white, middle class boys, with apparently no noteworthy obstacles or challenges, setting out to make a bunch of money and...making a bunch of money. I don't recall any point in the book in which the authors put value on anything other than money, which I find particularly horrifying behavior especially for children of this age. Nowhere in the book do we read about how such wanton accumulation of personal wealth benefits the community or even the individual in any real way, other than the repeated, empty catch phrase of "investing in yourself." This is basically the core of the book.

One thing that bothers me about all of the "buzz" surrounding the book is that many people are suggesting that the boys are selfless in some way. For instance, one review here says:
"I kept thinking about my nephew, whom only thinks about himself and his personal entertainment."

I don't understand how the activities outlined in this book are anything but selfish. Picking stocks may be a more constructive form of selfishness than playing video games, but it is selfish and self centered none the less. The boys themselves say on their blog "We are kids, and we want things." I see nothing selfless, heroic, or even remarkable about that. I also see nothing desirable about the possibility of our children, at younger and younger ages, becoming capitalist prostitutes that value nothing but money. I applaud the boys for donating the profits from this book to families that were affected by senseless war, but even that effort comes off as an advertising gimmick more than anything.

And to all of the reviewers throwing "God Bless" around...remember that "it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

I am thinking these young men will sell more than the "Queen Bee" Nanct Polosie, vaulted Speaker of the House did with her book and I think it is great.

I love it when Rush's recommendation shuts down servers and causes immediate back orders. I'm ordering several for my son and his friends. Capitalism at work. God bless the USA.

as soon as you get more in stock.
I guess the plug on Rush depleted the stock.

Congratulations on the smartest marketing move you could ever make!

I've been wanting to write a book on how I invest in ETF's, Preferreds and REITS. Now I have no excuse not to get started. I AM sorry they are out of stock; hope that is not permanent, but I've ordered my copy and await its arrival with great anticipation.

I ordered one also (on back order, that's ok) after hearing this on Rush. I will give it to my 12 year old daughter. Rush really is a sweet fuzz ball, after this! And congrats to this well-spoken young man. Double congrats to his parents and their great parenting!

Another former teacher out to support our young, gutsy American entrepreneurs who outshine all those deadbeats who seem to think that society owes them a living. Unfortunately, those deadbeats are all too often made to feel victimized by the politicians who cater to them and their families The Beatty boys are tops in most Americans' book of values. Thank you Beatty parents for bringing up such outstanding young men.

I heard about this on Rush's show and can't wait to order a copy. This book sounds very informative and helpful to both me and my kids, as well as helping to support a great cause. These young authors deserve a lot of credit for what they've done. Dittos!!!
