Pinkalicious

Pink, pink, pink. More than anything, Pinkalicious loves pink, especially pink cupcakes. Her parents warn her not to eat too many of them, but when Pinkalicious does . . . she turns pink! What to do?

This sparkling picture book, filled with such favorites as pink bubble gum, pink peonies, pink cotton candy, and pink fairy princess dresses, celebrates all things pink while showing that being yourself is best of all.

My daughter is almost 5 and is a pink freak! She won't leave the house unless she is wearng pink from head to toe. Needless to say, this book was a big hit for her. A fun story that girls will enjoy regardless of their love for pink!

We received this as a gift, and my 3 year old daughter honestly loves it. However when reading aloud it I recommend the following modifications:

- Skip the embellishments about how gross the vegetables are. We just say she ate her brussles sprouts, green beans, etc. and we point at all of the green foods on the page that my daughter eats.
- We also say "NO, PINKALICIOUS!" when we see her standing on a tower of furniture to reach the cupcakes on top of the refrigerator.
- I also usually mention that WE don't eat 6 cupcakes like Pinkalicious does because that is TOO MANY!
- And it is not really possible to swing from the chandelier

The book has a few bothersome points like this but it is also a light and fluffy story that we enjoy. Hopefully by the time my daughter can read it to herself she will be old enough to ignore the negative messages.

We all love this story in spite of the sassy, disobedient protagonist. I edit out the rude or negative words when I read it to the kids. The other day I was shocked to find my son standing on a child's chair which he had placed on top of another chair to reach the top of the fridge (where I keep his art stuff). He definitely got this idea from Pinkalicious. Luckily I caught him before he got hurt, but I decided to put Pinkalicious away for a while...

Our 3 year old daughter just LOVES this book and I enjoy reading it to her. She has actually memorized parts of the book...The illustrations are very cute and we look at those just as much as we read the story. The idea that your child will not eat green vegetables after reading this story is just down right ridiculous. This story has action and consequence and tells it in a cute way. It has not made my daughter rude or disobedient. It has simply brought us joy as a bedtime STORY and we truly enjoy it. I would recommend it to other parents and will probably give it as gifts to friends' children in the future.

My 2-year-old has literally memorized this book and it travels with us everywhere. I have given it as a gift to all the little ones we know. Yes, the character is a bit sassy, but I like to think that my parenting and examples have more influence over her behavior than a character in a book.

(Hide Review...)  Mixed feelings, but my daughter loves it
Reviewer Permalink
I had heard this was a popular book for little girls and the picture of Pinkalicious on the cover reminded me of my 3 year old daughter, so I bought it for her Easter basket.

She loves it - the pictures are beautiful and the story is silly, and after having it read to her only two times I caught her "reading" it to herself, saying words from each page that she remembered.

However, I was a little shocked when I read it the first time that Pinkalicious was impudent to her mother and sneaking food at night, but it seemed to me that she ultimately experiences negative consequences for her actions and that was kind of the point of the story. What I really didn't care for was the presentation of vegetables and other green foods as gross, but the reality is that there are lots of people (not just kids!) that feel that way, unfortunately. I do wish that part had been approached differently in this book.

Ultimately, I gave this book 4 stars because we do enjoy it, but it definitely is not what I was expecting - I may have known if I had read the reviews here first, or even taken the time to read it in the store before I bought it. If you are looking for a book with a life lesson or moral platitude, this is not for you. If you just want to have some pink silly fun, than by all means, enjoy!

Although I did not read each review, my sense is that people are buying this book with girls in mind. I also had girls in mind when I checked out the book from the public library to bring to my preschool class of 4 and 5 year olds (4 girls, 8 boys). This is the most popular book that has been in the classroom all year - and there have been many! However, it is the boys who like it the most and actually fight for a turn to read it. There is nothing like a display of bad behavior and bad food choices to peak a child's interest and serve as a springboard for many classroom discussions. I want to reassure the reviewer who was concerned about the image of the girl sticking her tongue out at her mother that all of my students knew, without a doubt, that one should NEVER do such a thing.

My grandchildren LOVE this book and it has become a favorite because we have created fun activities associated with the book's theme--like baking our own pinkalicious cupcakes, listing all the green foods we can think of (just in case we eat too many and turn pink or red....) and making up stories where EVERYTHING in the world is PINK and what that would be like. My four year old grandson had the book memorized after two readings and his two year old sister was 'reading' it herself after the first reading! (she has added a few extras like "No cupcakes until AFTER you eat your dinner!" etc.) All in all, it has been a terrific book for them AND for me because we have turned it into an interactive project for the three of us. I plan to buy the Purplelicious book as well hoping for the same results.

Pinkalicious is a delightful book for anyone who has a favorite color, especially pink. This is the story of a little girl who absolutely loves pink. So much in fact that she develops a rare case of pinkatitis from eating too much pink food. My 4 year old loves this book so much I feel that it was especially made for her. If I read this book one more time I just might turn pink :) Fun read!

I was very disappointed when I received this book, intended to give to my 15 month old granddaughter. It is a story about a little girl who is naughty and disrespectful. She sticks out her tongue and pitches a fit when she cannot have another cupcake. Contrary to what her mother and doctor told her, she sneaks into the kitchen and takes another cupcake. She sounds as though she is begging for a good old fashion spanking. I cannot give this to my granddaughter, and I'm very disappointed. Without knowing of the contents of the book, the posted outstanding 5-star reviews were what convinced me that the book was OK to order. Rapid City, SouthDakota

This was one of our 3 year old's Christmas presents this year. We have read this story almost every night since Christmas. Olivia reads the book by herself, reciting lines with the same intonation used by mom and dad. Such a great story, with opportunities to teach little ones about new words (mom...what does "envy" mean) and new vegetables at the same time (I don't LIKE cucumbers, mom!), all while having a wonderful time through the eyes of Pinkalicious, and her brother Peter. Highly recommend for your daughter.

I cannot believe this book even made it past a publisher's desk. I bought the book from Scholastic, as did four other parents and we are ALL sending it BACK! What a terrible temper on a little girl who willfully disobeys her parents and sneaks food. Burping up brussel sprouts? What a dissapointment this book was to all of us and it needs to be clearly said that this book should be shunned for it's message to children.

My 2-year-old daughter adores this book and quotes from it often. On the way to the doctor recently, she said she was "Pinkalicious." It's a cute story about a girl who loves pink. But I have to change the words when the girl gets sassy with her parents, and when it says she has to choke down disgusting green vegetables. I read "yum, yum, yum." Regardless, my daughter and I still love this book. Only 4 stars because of the negatives mentioned.

We read this book for bedtime, and what a lovely book! My daughter squealed in delight. She is by far a pink princess at 4 years old. So she loved this book. My sons ages 5 & 7 heard me read it to her from the next room over. They said "Mom, what is that book"? I asked them if they would like me to read it to them. And being boys, they did not mind all the pink. They loved it too! A true joy to read as a parent.

Why do I want my children to read a book about how she had to choke down vegetables. My kids eat vegetables and I would like to keep it that way. And if your kid doesn't eat green vegetables they certainly won't after reading this book. Wrong message to send to kids. I also read purplicious that had a better message but when I went to read more in the front, there were words in this book I would not want my children to hear or pick up if I have a say in it.

This was a sweet book with a good message and adorable drawings, even if it had some pouty moments (disobeying parents, sticking out tongues and eating too many cupcakes). It teaches you to listen to your parents and eat your vegetables or you will turn a bad shade of red. The story is kind of short but overall it was a good purchase and my little 5 year old sister loved it. If you like this I also recommend the book "A Bad Case of Stripes" by David Shannon.

(Hide Review...)  Nice illustrations, terrible otherwise...
Reviewer Permalink
Bought this book as a gift after seeing the very positive ratings. The illustrations are very nice, but the story itself is just plain boring and bland.

**SPOILERS AHEAD**

A girl doesn't listen to her parents and eats too many pink cupcakes, turns completely pink, angry daddy wants to wash her (pink is the new black face?).

She loves the effect so does not listen until attacked by birds & insects (logic?!?). Doctor tells her to stop eating pink foods and start eating greens.

Of course she does not listen (!), eats more pink, then turns red (does this make any sense?!?). She hates red and starts to 'choke down' greens to turn 'normal' (white?!?) again.

Everyone is happy, until her brother follows her example and turns PINK. A PINK BOY, oh horror of horrors, how terrible is THAT, he must be gay or something. Let's rescue him from his (apparently) genetic inclination...

Stupid stupid book. Nothing in it makes your child think. The text lacks any 'hidden meaning' to enjoy the book in the long run and only seems to promote the stereotypes that girls must like pink (and be princesses).

As you might suspect from the title, Pinkalicious celebrates all things pink and the girl who adores this color so much that she actually turns pink after eating her fill of pink cupcakes! Turning pink is quite an adventure for our little heroine, and she loves every moment of it 'till she finally realizes that being herself "is best of all!"

Young readers of the girley-girl variety will adore every bite of this book filled with the most deliciously written and illustrated pages of pinkness ever seen.

Cleverly written and illustrated with a humor that adults and children will love!

We saw this play today by a local theater group and purchased the book afterward. It's a really cute story about a girl who can't get enough pink, until she gets too much pink. I love that she has to eat healthy green stuff to get back to normal. And when she does become normal again, she says "I was me, and I was beautiful." Cute story, great message. My girls totally related to all the pink--they just can't get enough!! Cute twist at the end, too. :)

I bought this book a few weeks ago and my kids already know it by heart! Is there any such thing as too much pink? Pinkalicious loves pink. She especially loves yummy cupcakes with pink frosting. But, when she eats too many of them, she turns pink and comes down with a horrible case of pinkititis !!!! The doctor says the cure is to stop eating pink and to eat a steady diet of green foods. Can Pinkalicious resist the pink cupcakes sitting on the refrigerator? You must read Pinaklicious to fint it out. The words are pinkticious-delicious and the pictures are pinkorgeous-gorgeous. In between the whole fun there also is useful message about proper nutrition and the merits of a balanced diet. I also recommend a series of fun-filled books with great educational values titled Why Some Cats are Rascals

I was attracted to this book because my daughter loves anything pink. I almost bought it online without seeing it first and now am very glad that I went to a local store and read the book before ordering it.

In a nutshell, the main character in this book is rude, disrespectful and disobedient. She sticks her tongue out at her mother and willfully disobeys her mother's direction. She is sassy and rude. She also never suffers any real consequences for her belligerent behavior. These are not the values I want to pass on to my children.

If you are on the fence, I encourage you to go to a local store and read this book before purchasing it. You will be surprised at what you read.

Honestly, this book could have been cute. What's with trying to shove it down a kids throat that vegetables are gross? Mine eats them all the time with no problems (she's 4) and I don't want some book telling her about "gagging" and "choking down" vegetables. In one of the pictures Pinkalicious is sticking out her tongue at her monther - great manners (insert sarcasm here). I guess I just expected something cute and a sweet story...this was not it. This is about greed, disobeying your parents and overindulgence.
