Pat the Bunny (Touch and Feel Book)

The original classic touch and feel book that has been entertaining babies for over 60 years.
"Judy can pat the bunny. Now YOU pat the bunny." Sound familiar? Pat the Bunny is a part of childhood, as soothing as cocoa and animal crackers. Dorothy Kunhardt's interactive book for babies and toddlers was one of the first of its kind when it was published in 1940, and it has since sold over six million copies. We pat the soft fur of the bunny, play peek-a-boo, look in the mirror, and then do it all over again. (And again and again and again.) After you Pat the Bunny with your baby, why not Pat the Cat and Pat the Dog? These two sequels were written by Edith Kunhardt, the daughter of the author of the original book. Both use the same tried-and-true Pat the Bunny format: sturdy cardboard pages with eight activities that wee ones can explore, from sniffing some brownies, to squeaking a teddy bear, to unfastening Grandma's tennis shoe. The simple line drawings and pastel colors don't do much for adults, but somehow they are just right for babies. This boxed set is a fine choice for a baby gift or first birthday present, and a lifesaver on a long car trip. (Baby to preschool) --Marcie Bovetz

Pat the Bunny is the best first book to read to your baby. My daughter is fascinated by the bunny and the beard. If you receive two copies at your baby shower like I did, keep both because it will be loved to bits.

Overall just kind of cheap feeling. I'm pretty sure my daughter will destoy this soon. The bunny fur already came off in big clumps with the first pat. I would return it but who has the time as a busy mom??

This book is not as great/classic as it is proclaimed to be. I look at Alborough and Boynton books before I look at this one. The art is horrible, its too european (mummy), and too blonde haired and blue eyed. My daughter likes it, but not as much as her other rhyming books.

I have vague memories of owning this book as a young child, so when we received it as a baby gift, it was so fun to see it still in action. Our baby LOVES this book, and wants to look at it--and touch it really--every day. It captures and engages a baby's way of exploring his or her small world through touch, smell and sight. It does get worn out after a year or so, so I recommend buying two!

We introduced our daughter to this book when she was very young but didn't realize she would still be interested at 2 years old, now she enjoys playing peek-a-boo with Paul, though now she doesn't get upset when she has to say Bye Bye to Paul and Judy! This book is great to get them to feel the different textures and interact with the different pages. I'm looking forward to when she can read the book to me!

My mother had bought my son Pat the Puppy initially, but he was never that into it. I remember having Pat the Bunny when I was little and loved it, so I bought it for my son as well. He is 9 months old and loves this book! He loves playing Peek a Boo with Paul and feeling Daddy's scratchy face. He even pulls the book up to his face to smell the flowers and puts his finger through Mummy's Ring. And yes of course he loves to Pat the Bunny too! This book is a classic, but even the newest ones still like this book!

I had this book myself growing up, so of course I wanted one for my daughter! It isn't as sturdy as today's board books, but for interactivity, it can't be beaten! It has all kinds of textures in it, and my daughter likes it when I help her feel things - the soft bunny, play peekaboo with Paul, and my favorite, Daddy's scratchy face!

The perfect book for a pre-reader this is a classic that enthralls my toddler every single time we pick it up. There's a reason why some things weather the test of time, this book is practically perfect in every way.

We got the spiral-bound version, I wouldn't recommend it. Little kids are very hard on their books, get the hardcover if you can.

We got a hand-me-down copy of this book when our daughter was a year old. She would bring it to us in our bed every morning so she could start her day off with it. She enjoyed it for several months. When we had a second daughter I bought a nice, new copy of it and she also enjoyed it and read it over and over. I think this would make an excellent gift for a new baby or a child's first birthday since that is the age when they really get into it. Lots of things to feel on the different pages - they love it!

This is the best touch and feel book I have come across...your baby can not only pat the bunny but also do several other things like learn to play peek-a-boo, smell the flowers, look in the mirror and so on...my daughter absolutely loves looking at the book and I love reading it out to her...whenever she cries I start reciting the book to her to calm her down and it works! she has the book memorised coz as soon as I get to the end she starts waving bye-bye just before I get to that part...however, I wish this book would come in a sturdier version (like a board-book) as my daughter has already torn off her first copy and I had to buy another copy for her...

This was one of my favorite books when I was a child. I guess it's because of all the fun things to do while your reading it. I'm almost 30 years old and my mom still has my copy from when I was younger. I just purchased it for my 15 month old son this past Christmas. We sit and read/play it together and then put it up when we're done. It's definitely not a book that you can let a little one toss around, but it's still a classic, in my opinion!

Reviewer Permalink
I thought about getting this book for years before actually buying it. Wish I hadn't waited - it's absolutely adorable! Completely interactive - every page has something different for children to do. Not just a "feel the textures" book, this one has your child playing peek-a-boo, smelling flowers, putting their fingers through a ring, looking in the mirror, reading "Judy's book" (yes, a book within a book), and of course, feeling Daddy's scratchy face and patting the bunny. At the end, the two kids wave bye-bye.

Just a great book. My 10-month-old loves it and actually cries for it. She can do most of the things (won't smell flowers yet). Even my 3-yr-old wants me to read it to her. The only thing wrong with it is the plastic comb format. The book is so delicate, so fragile, that we have it stored up high in its box (which was stepped on already). I think my baby could demolish the book in about two seconds flat if given the opportunity.

This is a nice book for the very young child (4 mos-18 mos) sitting on your lap and playing with all the "touchy feely" pages in the book. The babies are facinated but if you don't stay close, they'll have it torn up in no time. If it makes it through those very early years, the older 4 year old might enjoy it as well on their own.

At first my daughter was not very impressed with this book...the pictures aren't as compelling as in some of her other books. But as she's gotten older, the interactive details of this book have really made this one of her favorites. She talks and laughs at the characters for a good 20 minutes at a time. And anyone with an active 1 year old knows how impressive that is! Its sturdy design (double-folded cardboard pages) also make it fairly destroy-proof, though I'm sure there's a baby out there that will find a way!

Before I owned this book, I never really understood its allure. It seemed like it wasn't really brightly colored enough to hold my daughter's interest. Boy was I wrong! She has loved this book from the time she was about 8 months old. She's now almost 2 and it's still one of her favorites. She especially loves the little hole representing the mummy's ring and always wants to put her finger in my ring too. The one problem with the book is that it's not at all sturdy...but then again, it is quite well loved.

I thought this would have been a great book for my infant/toddler, but was very disappointed because it is not a sturdy board book. Instead, it is a regular paper back book with slightly thicker pages. This book requires extra gentle care and is not good for children at a stage where they want to touch and feel the book, as the title suggests.

(Hide Review...)  my daughter likes this one better than the modern versions
Reviewer Permalink
My 2 year old daughter has so many books which incorporate different textures to touch and flaps to lift and look underneath. When her Grandad gave her this book I thought that I would appreciate it more than her because of the sentimental value of it being such an old book. I thought my daughter would be less interested because it doesn't have the flashy colourful pictures of her more modern books.

I was so wrong. Out of all her touch and feel books, it is repeatedly this one that she looks for in her book box.

I think the difference with this book, and no doubt why it has been loved by so many generations, is that my daughter doesn't just touch - she actively joins in a whole range of activities with the children in the story. She strokes the bunny, plays peek-a-boo, smells the (very perfumed!) flowers, reads the book, looks in the mirror, and her favourites - stroking Daddy's scratchy face and putting on Mummy's ring. It is a story about child's play and a child's view of the world, and the not so flashy drawings do in fact add to that.

My three year old still reads his copy that he got when he was a baby. My second baby received one when she was 8 months and also loves it. I just wish they were more sturdy. It's a wonderful book but my kids are a bit rough and have torn it to shreds. They have other touch and feel/lift the flap books that are much more sturdy. I think they should keep the storyline but re-design the construction.

(Hide Review...)  So Intelligent!
Reviewer Permalink
I ordered this book knowing it would be very simple, but I did not expect it to have so much subtle humor and intelligence. For example, the book within a book - what a trip! It goes, Now YOU read: JUDY'S BOOK. And there you have "JUDY'S BOOK" a very short funny story about Bunny attached right onto the page, with its own miniature pages to turn. (how big is bunny? soooooooo big).

I think it is notable that in 1940, Dorothy Kunhardt had the boy, Paul 'smell the flowers' and put his finger through mommy's ring rather than the girl, Judy. I also like how Judy does four things while Paul does two. I think it is more sophisticated to not divide the activities right down the middle, even though it's not the kind of thing anyone notices I'm sure Dorothy Kunhardt made this decision on purpose - to make it a bit lopsided.

The ending cracks me up because it is so abrupt and sounds just like a baby: That's all. Bye-bye.

And then it goes: Can you say Bye-bye? Paul and Judy are waving Bye-bye to YOU.

All in all, deserves to be classic not just because it was so innovative at the time but because it is so well-done in general.

p.s. yes it does seem surprisingly flimsy compared to most books today - but apparently it is true to the original, that's how it was made at the time. And though it LOOKS flimsy, I actually think it should hold up well.

Now this is a book i LOVED as a child. I can remember, slipping my small finger through the ring cut out and gingerly rubbing "daddy's" sandpaper stubble. Some childhood memories pale when you try to re-live them with your own children- but not this one. My children giggled each time they touched Daddy's face (who in their case actually looks like their daddy with dark hair unlike my own), and my son especially loved playing peek-a-boo with the boy. This is a great gift and although it probably won't hold up in order to be passed down (my friends copy went through three kids and is now kept in a box in it's "pieces") it is definitely a keeper. You can start introducing this book as early as they are ready to listen to you read- it is very interactive so great for the 9 mos on stage) but don't leave them alone with it until they can restrain from gumming it-- not a board book or baby "proof".

There was nothing more precious than when he started to take the book to his nose and smell the flowers. Though the book started to fall apart toward the end, it lasted for as long as it needed to - he was starting to out grow it. I plan to give the book as a gift at future baby showers, for sure.

This book, especially with the Plush bunny, makes a great gift for a newborn. My daughter and I chose together to purchase the set. We shared some wonderful memories of reading it together and doing the activities in it when she was young (she just turned 22) and we thought that other mothers and daughters would also enjoy sharing it. The toy gives it another part and we thought it was a very authentic representation of the bunny in the book. It makes the gift even more appealing.

This is a very sweet, interactive book for very young kids. Both my boys loved it and wore out a copy, so I bought a replacement. Each page asks the kids to do something very simple, just like the kids in the book. This was one of my boys' favorite books, and they would "read" through it on their own many times.
