| New Moon (The Twilight Saga, Book 2) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Legions of readers entranced by Twilight are hungry for more and they won't be disappointed. In New Moon, Stephenie Meyer delivers another irresistible combination of romance and suspense with a supernatural twist. The "star-crossed" lovers theme continues as Bella and Edward find themselves facing new obstacles, including a devastating separation, the mysterious appearance of dangerous wolves roaming the forest in Forks, a terrifying threat of revenge from a female vampire and a deliciously sinister encounter with Italy's reigning royal family of vampires, the Volturi. Passionate, riveting, and full of surprising twists and turns, this vampire love saga is well on its way to literary immortality.

After reading Twilight, I really expected to be even more wowed by New Moon, but that was no where near the reaction that I had to this sequel.
I found myself bored and sad for most of the book. It was kind of beating to read. I do believe that some of it was necessary to further the story, but I believe it could have been done in a much more interesting and different way. I didn't really find any of it interesting until the end, so when you read it, just keep in mind that the third one is better, so its worth the boredom. I really have to start this review by saying that if I was 16, I would be all over this series. Obsessed and tearing through them and unable to put them down. However, I am not 16. I picked up the first volume for two reasons: one, I am high school teacher, and I wanted to know what it is that all my girls are reading, and two, as a writer (but not yet published) I feel like I should keep up with the current trends.
So here we are at the end of book #2. Without giving away too much, Bella is still head-over-heels for Edward, our vampire hero. However, Edward breaks up with her somewhere in the first 50 pages (of almost 600). This brings on a deluge of teen angst and sends Bella into a dangerous downward spiral worthy of a VH1 documentary. She recovers eventually and rekindles a friendship with Jacob, an old family friend who she hasn't seen much of, because of some bad blood (sorry, had to do it) between him and Edward. Here is my main issue with this series: Bella has no identity of her own. She is either Edward's girlfriend or Jacob's. She is either with the vampires or the werewolves. She has yet to embrace her own individuality. I don't like the message this sends our girls. When you get dumped, you should stalk around like a zombie for months and take foolish risks with your life? If you can't get over one boy, go find yourself another to become infatuated with? Allow yourself to become so absorbed with a boyfriend that you allow him (whichever one we're talking about here... doesn't matter) to tell you who you can be friends with and who you can not? Overall, the series so far is entertaining, but I'm getting tired of Bella constantly saying how beautiful Edward is and how plain she looks next to him. She actually says at one point, "by comparison, I am hideous." Oh, please, Bella. According to Stephanie Meyer, you have every boy in Forks and La Push after you. There must be something redeeming about you. Stop talking about how you don't deserve your controlling, possessive, noncommunicative boyfriend. It doesn't become you. Yes, I will read the third book. I'm invested enough in the story to want to know how it comes out, but I hope that the kids who are reading this take it with a grain of sat. Edward is not, contrary to popular belief right now, the perfect boyfriend. But when I was 16, I don't know if if I would have realized that. I hope that I would have. I think that New Moon is a very good book and any one that liked the Harry Potter series should read them. It is a vampire/romance novel. It is quick reading because I started at the beginning of a week and ended at the middle of the week. Once you get started with it, you can't put it down.

I read Twilight on the recommendation of one of the students who attends the university I work for. I should probably mention that this was a law student who is in her mid twenties.
I have to say, I didn't care for it much, and Bella Swan (that Stephenie Meyer gave her main female protagonist the completely subtle and not ham fisted at all really name "Beautiful Swan" was an immediate source of hilarity right from page one) is easily one of the most overt examples of Mary Sue-ism I've ever encountered in published, professional fiction. In spite of this, since the book is one in a series, I decided to read "New Moon" (I work in a library, so what would it cost me really except a bit of time?) in the hope that the series would show signs of improving. It did actually, which earned it the single star I've given NM. More on that a bit later. What I was specifically looking for was an improvement in the portrayal of Edward's character. According to the author, Edward was dying of the flu at the age of 17 in the very early part of the 20th century. Even at 17, Edward would have been considered and behaved very much more like an adult than a modern 17 year old boy. Beyond this, since being transformed into a vampire has enabled him to have "lived" for well over 100 years, he is extensively world traveled, and was present for every major societal change and event within that time period (WWI, WWII, just to name two of the most obvious events). Yet none of these things is reflected in his character in the least bit. That is, he gives no indication of having gained the intellectual insight or emotional wisdom that anyone would acquire who was the least bit intelligent and had an infinite amount of time to acquire them. I understand that this series is primarily aimed at very young people, but even so, any fiction, especially if it's considered good enough to publish professionally, has to have some sort of core consistency in terms of the rules that the author has established for how the world that she's created operates. The world of NM is exactly like ours except for the fact that it includes vampires and werewolves. This being the case, why is Edward, who, in spite of the obvious differences, is in many ways a 110 year old man, even capable to being reduced to some sort of girlie moo cow over a teenager? Because she smells tasty? I'm sorry. No. Edward is over a century old, yet has the mental processes of an emotionally effeminate pubescent boy. In terms of authorship and character development, this is indefensible. The author does a noticeably better job with Jacob's character, and earns a single star for no other reason. Jacob exhibits recognizably age appropriate habits, interests, and behaviors. Even his interest in Bella (ha!) seems more authentic, as there are at least reasons that can be pointed to that might justify it (why wouldn't he have developed a crush on the cute enough and slightly older girl he'd met a few years earlier?) He's inherently the most likable character of the series so far, and for the sake of the readers, I hope she's done nothing to ruin him. Under ideal circumstances, he would have only improved along the way. I won't ever know, because this is the last book in the series that I'll be reading. OK follow-up to Twilight, but not as interesting as it could have been. I am hoping Stephanie Meyer immerses us more into the world of vampires and werewolves she has created with the next two volumes, and focuses less on Bella. Yes, I know this is a love story first, but I get it - Bella loves Edward with all she has, she'll do anything for him, etc. Please Stephanie, tell us more about the mysterious vampire family in Italy, their brutal hunting practices, the history of the werewolves, etc.
Maybe it's because I'm normally a scifi/fantasy fan that I crave these things from this series. It is a good series for what it is, but it would be great if we got a little less Bella angst. I will continue to read, with my fingers crossed. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-30 02:17:36 EST)

I'm almost hesitant to even write this review since it's quite negative, I know there are die hard fans who would just love to lambaste me. It just seems to me that for a book that contains over 600 hundred pages, there would be more development of character. All I really got was this whiny, self-centered twit of a 17/18 year old. Now since I have passed that age about 5 years ago, I would like to think I still remember clearly what my thought process was. I would NOT disregard my family over an obsession/"true love", I definitely would not have dropped friends who were loyal to me to rush of to save an inconsistent "love" nor did I have a poorly disguised death wish. The whole Romeo and Juliet theme just made me roll my eyes. To me, it is the worst of Shakespeare's works. I know that teen years are perceived to be quite turbulent to some but really this just seems so extreme.
Now don't get me wrong, I liked the first book but this addition just seemed so...well annoying. I found myself wanting to slap some sense into Bella for most (up to the very end really) of the book. I truly felt for Jacob, I do not see the fascination that these two guys have for her. Even thousand year old Vampires were intrigued by her. Ugh. I was actually hoping she would be made a meal of in the bloodbath in that chamber. Then finally when we get to Edward's explanation for leaving her, I just LOVED how he turned it all around and told her he could not believe she fell for his 'I-don't-love-you-routine'. He just admitted that he was an excellent liar, what do expect of an insecure teenager? Of course Bella fell for it. I don't understand why Bella didn't give him more grief over that whole episode. We SUFFERED through hearing her whine most of the book and suddenly all if forgiven once she saw him? Gag. Okay enough of the rant, I still have two books in the serious to read since I got the box set as a gift. I sincerely hope there is more improvement in the next two! I feel that this book is much much better than Twilight. Mostly because the characters are becoming more full body and the story doesn't' revolve around Edward. In New Moon Bella is faced with the hole, which takes over the place of her heart once Edward leaves. In the whole she meets new people and opens herself up to new experiences. Jacob becomes a large part of her life. After reading this story I wished Edward would die and Bella could continue a life without him.

But, honestly, this is my least favorite of the four books. The departure of Edward and the Cullens mystified me considering the oath of love between Bella and Edward and the developing relationship between Jacob and Bella also mystified me. I loved the vampire story so much that I guess I had less interest in the Jacob story. Just me. However, having read through all four books - and this is a spoiler - I can see how everything eventually fit together and that certain things HAD to happen for the finale to take place in Breaking Dawn. Nevertheless, I didn't know this when reading New Moon. Despite this, I feel that this book is still 99% better than most others out there. My opinion is that if we want real life downers - bad language, drug, alcohol and lots of depression (which actually Bella does experience in New Moon), we can LIVE our real lives and not have an Edward in it to at least dull the pain. So, I loved the essence of these books. No matter what your philosophies are, if you love a good romance that has lots of action and adventure and could also be put in the thriller category, but hate all the bad language and "out there" sex, these books are for you. A lot of people have mentioned the not-so-great writing style. Well, I am an avid reader - I read all sorts of books by all sorts of authors and I was totally entertained and addicted by and to this saga. I thought the writing was quite good, better than many books I have read for "adults." They have put this under teenage fiction, but I am 55 years old (I picked Twilight up on vacation because I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, expecting to not even get halfway through it. Imagine me getting hooked and sneaking to the book store to buy the other three books in the series feeling slightly ridiculous). And some raters here picked on small things in the series - that is their right to do so, but you know? Take it for what it is. A fun romance/action/adventure/thriller and just have fun reading it. No need to take it apart and look for things that really aren't there or meant to be there. Exquisite fiction for all ages. Thank you, Ms. Meyers, for giving this old lady a week of pure literary joy!

Reality takes some strange bends around the small rural town near the ocean where Bella, an eighteen year old senior in high school, lives with her father, Charlie, a sheriff. Bella finds herself caught between the world of vampires and a significant other among them and a world of Indian legends come to life. The conflicts and drama do create many moments of frightful suspense, and teenage love takes new twists. Bella narrates the story and much of the book is devoted in quite an effective fashion to her emotional responses to events. More details would ruin the plot, so get the book for those. It's a fun read.Translator's Kiss

I truly enjoyed the book New Moon. However, I was dazzled and enthralled by the series that lead me through Edward's world within each book. However, to me, the best part of the series were New Moon and Eclipse. I am an Edward fan. However, I became a Jacob fan in Breaking Dawn.

Vampire novels are never good! In fact, they have much more in common with the Devil and evil spirits than they do with anything else. Stuff like this comes from the pit of Hell! These books are NEVER good, they are always BAD! Mark my words, this book WILL NOT improve your life, in fact, it will undoubtedly ruin it!

This book is a wonderful follow up. Everyone I have loaned my books to are asking me to buy them a copy for christmas. Yes, they have read them, but say they can't wait to reread them. I just can't even begain to explain how wonderful the book are to read. I my self have already read them twice and can't wait to see the twilight movie, but I am hoping they will follow up the movie twilight with movies of new moon, eclipse, and breaking dawn. I hope they don't just leave us hanging.

This book has been analyzed to death already, so I won't write too long of a review. Presumably, you will already have read Twilight before you read this book. This book pick up soon after that one left off. But fans of Edward the vampire may be disappointed, because he leaves near the beginning of the book and doesn't show up again until near the end. Instead, most of the book is devoted to Bella's friendship with Jacob the werewolf. We learn all we need to know about werewolves (Stephanie Meyer's version of werewolves, anyway). It's fairly entertaining, although some people may find all the "love that will never die" stuff to be corny.

**This contains spoilers**
As soon as I finished "Twilight", I raced to the bookstore to pick up "New Moon". Expecting the same emotion and story, I read with great anticipation. But I was soon shocked to find how the story took a radical turn. This is a VERY sad book. The depression that Bella feels after Edward leaves is very powerful. If you've ever lost a close family member, you can empathize with the "gaping hole" feeling she has. So I continued to read on, desperate to know when Edward was coming back....I mean he had to, didn't he? I read and read...and 400 pages into it I really started to get discouraged. The story tended to drag on until all of a sudden it jumps to lightning speed and Bella races halfway around the world to.....well, I won't ruin all of it for you. Anyways, I'm really hoping I won't be disappointed with "Eclipse". If you're a hopeless romantic, stop at the first book. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-23 01:08:55 EST)

Due to circumstances involving my local library, I never read "Twilight" but only this second book in the series, "New Moon."
It's a Young Adult Fantasy novel, which is a genre that I love even though I don't belong to its target audience anymore. I'm not a teenager nor female, a combination which would be ideal for maximum enjoyment of "New Moon." So I probably did not get maximum enjoyment out of it, but I liked it well enough. The book starts with Bella Swan, the protagonist, spending her eighteenth birthday with her vampire boyfriend Edward and his family, but because of an unhappy accident during the party, Edward decides that Bella is not safe in his family and they ought to move far away. Which they do. Left without her boyfriend, Bella struggles with depression and meets someone else ... The story goes on from there. What I liked about the book was not the love story as such, but fascinating concepts such as Bella having hallucinations of Edward's voice when under an adrenaline rush and consequently seeking ever more dangerous situations in order to keep hearing Edward's voice - a quest that eventually puts both her and Edward into great peril. That twist and the ending of the book added the necessary zest to what might have otherwise been a fairly bland and overly teenage-pleasing story. I can't say that this has been my favorite Young Adult novel I've ever read, but it was worth the read. And who knows? Maybe, if the situation at my local library had been different and I'd read the first book in the saga first, I would have enjoyed the second book even more than I did. I certainly do not recommend starting with this book, as I did. Given that it's my own fault to not have read "Twilight" first, I give "New Moon" 4.5 out of 5 stars. - Jacob Schriftman, Author of "The Crack Beneath the Worlds" (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-23 01:08:56 EST)

While the first novel Twilight was an exciting and gripping book, New Moon failed to meet the high expectations that Twilight automatically raised. The idea of a relationship between a vampire and a human girl is a unique and thrilling story, and it does make sense that Edward believes that Bella would have a better life without a vampire as her boyfriend. But spending time on hundreds of pages without Edward there, and instead hearing about werewolves and Jake, who falls in love with Bella, is not what I had expected to read. This is a story about Edward and Bella, and so I wanted to read more about both of them: how they relate to each other, what difficulties they have to face together, and how their love develops. I was prepared for a sequel that would continue telling us about the life they have together. Instead, the reader is presented werewolves and Jake, who not only falls in love with Bella, but who also becomes a werewolf. By presenting Bella another unusual 'boyfriend' besides Edward, the uniqueness of the story and the unusual relationship between Edward as a vampire and Bella as a human girl gets lost. It turns into a story in which werewolves fight vampires, but the love between Bella and Edward fades from the spotlight. For nothing are we waiting for the excitement that always grabs us when we read about Edward and Bella when they are together. Now we have to get used to Jake, who turns out to be a strong and fearless werewolf, but who still lacks the maturity that makes Edward so attractive.
Another point that speaks against the book is that Meyer changed her language style by trying to write more complex sentences. It should be praised that she tried to get away from the very simple language that she had used in Twilight, but she does not know how to handle complex sentences to compose a well-written novel. As she knows much better how to write simple sentences, she should accept that and stick to her style. Twilight reads so well and easy, and the language style perfectly matches the plot. She should have kept the style for New Moon as well, for I believe that then at least the language would have been enjoyable and met a simple plot of an unimaginative story of werewolves against vampires. But given that plot and language style, New Moon failed to meet high expectations. In fact, it is a book that I just continued reading because I hoped that Edward would come back soon, and I was curious about how the story between him and Bella would go on...
I enjoy the Native American story line in this series, finally a look at life as a Native in a fun and contemporary setting that I will be able to share with my kids. But I have to admit, I am not a fan of how selfish, needy, and love torn the main character, Bella, is written. She is not a strong character, but in this book she begins to develop a healthier relationship with Jacob, a character I love. Jacob is underserved and not presented in realistic manner as a 16 year-old shape shifter. The fantasy part to the vampires and werewolves deserves more than the unbelievably annoying and over-exaggerated, hard-to-believe character development of that Bella, Jacob, and the father (Charlie) are given. Other than that I enjoyed this book better than the others because of the presence of Jacob and his family!

After finishing reading "Twlight", I was very excited to jump into read "New Moon." At the end of my book there was a preview of the first chapter and as the last sentences hit my eyes, I vocally screamed "No!" filled with the incomprehension that it could end that way and leave me hanging. I immediately ran upstairs and grabbed the second book to jump back in the journey. This continuation of the Saga is not quite as exhilerating as the first installment, but it is still a great read. The beginning is great, and then there is a big chunk of chapters that I just was not quite fond of. I believe it was the context and my mind unconsciously picking sides and not wavering even slightly in my opinions. But then, when I was about to give up hope, the plot took twists that I had not expected and the story that I felt had become predictable became heart-rending and complicated. It was truly an Ethel and the Pirate story. The story continues as at pace relevant to the first book and ends in a satisfactory manner that left me with a "thirst" for the next book. And now, I'm on my way upstairs to get it... BTW, I read this 563 page book in a manner of 4 or so hours. I would describe it (for the most part) and a deft page turner. *grin*

I really like Twilight Saga. Good to read in a bus - it's not wearing you out and it's easy to follow. Good simple writting.

I was almost afraid to read this book, because I love Twilight so much and didn't want to contend with a weak sequel. No worries, because this book is VERY GOOD!! It sets up a love triangle and there's new creatures. I think Bella's emotional reaction to her situation with Edward is very believable. Twilight creates a romance which is very powerful and intense, so her emotions in New Moon are quite normal.
Despite being so disturbing, I thought the introduction of the darker and complex side of the Vampire world necessary and important. Most importantly - and I wish it had been addressed in Twilight - is the discussion of God and whether or not Vampires have souls. What happens to a Vampire when they die? Can they go to Heaven? Do Vampires believe in God? Edward's fears about his own soul - and Bella's - are central to their story, although only touched upon lightly in a few scattered comments. This is a good book, a very good sequel. If you liked Twilight, you will probably definitely enjoy New Moon. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-19 01:29:42 EST)

I'm a big fan of vampires and vampire lore. From the Lost Boys to Ann Rice novels, to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I can't get enough bloodsuckers. It can be hard to find quality vampire entertainment, but Twilight got great reviews and seemed right up my alley.
I liked Twilight. But I couldn't bring myself to finish New Moon. I thought that in New Moon we'd see more depth of character in Bella and Edward and a deepening in their feelings for each other, which in the first book seemed like intense lust/curiosity. No, I didn't buy that it was true love from book 1. But I expected it would become true love as the book and characters progressed. I was dreaming. But I was patient. I read through a great deal of Bella's emo whining and selfish behavior in New Moon before I couldn't take it any more and stopped. How can you go on reading a book when you wish the main character would jump off a cliff? It's really a shame. I thought Stephanie had potential as a writer, but I came to realize that she can't even create a sympathetic main character let alone come up with a creative plot. There is no depth, no innovation. It's just a pathetic fantasy by an uneven author with delusions of grandeur. The next JK Rowling she is NOT. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-19 01:29:42 EST)

I liked the premise of Twilight, but the writing itself was pretty dismal. I'm pleased to say that Stephenie Meyer has greatly improved with her second novel in the Twilight series, New Moon. There are enough reviews here that go into detail on the story, so I'll just say that if you were put off by the writing in Twilight, give New Moon a chance. It's not great literature, but Stephenie has done a much better job here. I look forward to reading Eclipse.

New Moon was a difficult story to read, but one that I enjoyed. Most of the book is spent in anticipation and I found myself wishing I could read faster than I was haha. Stephenie Meyers herself asked that her readers go through the book twice (which I have done), because the middle of the book is lost on the reader as they anticipate what is next. I personally found it more exciting than Twilight, as there was a longer period of action and not as much description on her feelings of Edward (not that I disliked this in Twilight, but it was growing a bit tired). Overall, this was an excellent book and I would highly recommend it!

This book gives readers a lot of insight to the passion behind character Bella Swan's feelings for Edward Cullen. Many readers describe this book in the series as a slow read, but for those of us that have been in love or are in love, know that this book illusrates so much more than any of the other books combined. You will feel a large range of emotions and you will truely empathize with Bella because Stephanie Meyer does a phenomonal job of expressing the longing and love that she has for her "forever love" Edward.

Talk about going off on a tangent
this book was such a disapointment in comparision to the first i felt the story was flighty and the characters lost much of the charm they had in the first book. while not as bad as the third book, i can think of a million things to better ocupy the time this book takes to read! this actually made me dislike the first book which is not a good step! my recomendations if your determined to read this series is read book one and four! SKIP BOOK TWO and THREE at ALL COSTS! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-19 01:29:42 EST)

First and formost, I am an avid reader of most things. I was introduced begrudgingly to this series through a friend and the upcoming movie. Upon beginning Twilight, I was sucked in rather hard. New Moon though, I found to be a different kind of book. Please understand, this review is personal, and I understand that many may not have recieved the pain I did upon reading it.
The book itself is well done; the dialogue is consistent, there are fewer errors in the book (minus the name change of a minor character), there's a bit more action and less personal reflection on the perfection of Edward. The role of Jacob is necessary, and well written. He fulfills all the parts required of him. However, the conclusion of the book is what causes me pain. For those who have felt the loss and betrayal of a lover-particularly one you see yourself with permanently, the damage Edward does to Bella is truly unforgivable. Her willingness to forgive and forget is unrealistic. Of course, as a fictional character, she is allowed to respond however she wants. And of course, as Meyer designed, she places everyone's need above her own. I must hand it to Meyer though, the description of Bella's pain is exceptionally accurate. The most upsetting part of the book is also the simplest: only one word was needed per page. I am worried though, that the young female readers will recieve a heightened damsel complex, expecting their mate to respond to them without vocalization, and that this kind of betrayal (despite Edward's intentions) is acceptable. The type of pain Bella goes through for him is too realistic for me to accept the unrealistic conclusion. I look forward though, to continuing the saga to its conclusion.
