Knuffle Bunny : A Cautionary Tale (Bccb Blue Ribbon Picture Book Awards (Awards))

Trixie, Daddy, and Knuffle Bunny take a trip to the neighborhood Laundromat. But the exciting adventure takes a dramatic turn when Trixie realizes somebunny was left behind . . . Using a combination of muted black-and-white photographs and expressive illustrations, this stunning book tells a brilliantly true-to-life tale about what happens when Daddys in charge and things go terribly, hilariously wrong. Mo Willems is a six-time Emmy Awardwinning writer and former animator for Sesame Street, and the creator of Cartoon Networks Sheep in the Big City. Both his first book for children, Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, and his fourth book Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale won prestigious Caldecott Honors from the American Library Association. The New York Times has called him "the biggest new talent to emerge thus far in the 00's". Mo lives with his family in Brooklyn, New York.

We received this book as a gift and my 2 year old daughter LOVES it. She does her own "knuffling" around the house, she's totally enjoying the story.

First, let me say that my nieces, aged 5 and 2.5, love this book. Love, love, love. We take it out often from the library.

They really like playing the perennial Mo Willems game "Find the hidden picture of the pigeon!", and they like the story as well. It just calls to them, and when I read it they participate and everything.

I find the book starts to lose its charm after a dozen dozen readings, but what do I know? I'm just an adult!

My only complaint about this book is, I wish it were longer! I just adore anything Mo Willems writes, particularly the "Pigeon" books. The combination of cartoon art and actual photographs made the book visually wonderful.

A great gift, along with its sequel!

LOVE this book. I can curl up day after day with my four year old and my five month old and giggle over this book. Sometimes, my four year old sits quietly while I read to him, other times he tells me what is going on complete with voices and lots of giggling.

I like the way this book is illustrated as well, cartoon characters set against photographs of actual streets.

Anyone with young children know they will often seize on a book and fall in love, wanting us to read it over and over again...I like that this book is simple enough for them to 'read along,' but the message is a sweet one....Daddy will do whatever he has to do to make his little one happy, and what child doesn't like to see Dad as the 'hero?'

Without a doubt our favorite 'kids' book.

We began reading this book to our daughter when she was 21 months old. She loves it, along with Knuffle Bunny Too, which she had a few months earlier. She loves to flip through the pages herself and tell the story. The artwork is inventive, and the story is fun for her and for the adults.

So does my daughter (21 months). She's memorized it and likes to 'read' several parts to me...especially Trixie's language "Aggle Flabble Klabble". When we get to the part where Trixie realizes something, my daughter says, "Nuffe Bunny gone!" It's priceless. And having a toddler, the sympathy for the characters goes both ways. How many times have I KNOWN that I have NO idea what my daughter is so desperately trying to tell me!!

This adventurous tale takes place when daddy and little Trixe take a trip to the Laundromat. Knuffle Bunny is a dramatic story about what can happen when daddy is in charge and things don't quite go the way he planned.
The content of the book is aimed at preschool aged children, as are the pictures. However, adults will also find humor in this tale. Anyone who is a parent has probably been in a similar situation as the one depicted in the story. The language in the book is very much language that a preschooler would use and understand. There is a hint of predictability in the story, but it is enjoyable just the same.
The illustrations in the story are interesting. The author has places expressive cartoon drawings over beautiful black and white photographs of Brooklyn, New York. This unique approach not only gives children a chance to focus on the emotion of the characters as well as compare the book to places that they have been. Since the characters are the only things in color, it really focuses the reader onto the emotions that Trixie goes through.
The story truly is about the love that a child has for their favorite things as well as the love that parents have for their children. The cover of the book shows this perfectly, displaying a dad with his hand on his daughter's head while she squeezes her bunny tight. The endpapers foreshadow the events to come, showing Knuffle Bunny in the door of the washing machine. The title page is interesting, showing photos of Trixie's parents growing up and a photo of her and her bunny. This shows that things are always changing. However, through the story the love that Trixie has for her stuffed toy never changes.
This book is a "cautionary tale," one that shows how things that are special to a child become special to the entire family. The book is a worthy addition to any child's bookshelf.

This book is a gem. The children love the blend of photography and Willems cartoon drawings. It has appeal across many ages. This story is one that all children can relate to...getting their point across. I love that mom is the know it all and dad saves the day. The children love Trixie's language and adapt it to using in real life situations. Parents can relate to Trixie going "boneless" with a knowing chuckle. Consider purchasing the follow up book, Knuffle Bunny Too at the same time, but perhaps read them a few months apart so they may be equally savored.

I gave this book to my granddaughter for her third birthday. We all love the story and enjoy the artwork, as well. After giving Kelsey this book, my daughter told me that DON'T LET THE PIGEON DRIVE THE BUS (another one of Mo Willem's books) was one of Kelsey's favorite preschool stories. After a week of experiencing the book, my daughter told me how much they like reading it together. However, I believe my daughter is the biggest fan of all! It also includes a little humor for the adults, since all parents can relate to losing or misplacing a favorite blanket or toy. I think this will be one of those books that Kelsey (and her mom) will remember forever.

Our whole family loves this book! Our youngest has a precious bunny that goes with her everywhere, so I thought this would be a good book. I was hesitant to buy it after reading some of the reviews criticizing Trixie's tantrum... so I borrowed it from the library (and then quickly bought our own copy after reading it). First, let me say this is not a preschooler having a tantrum, but a toddler not yet able to speak, so the little girl is really just trying to get her point across the only way she can... any parent who has been through this will appreciate the humor shown by the illustrations.

I laugh more each time I read this book to our 22 month old and 3 1/2 year old. The expressions on the cartoon characters are priceless. My kids also LOVE this book. It quickly became a favorite for the younger one; after introducing Knuffle Bunny Too: A Case of Mistaken Identity, that became the favorite of the older one.

I bought this book when I read had won Caldecott award so I was curious to see it. I found it very nice, I liked everything: the story, the dialogues, the ilustration+photographies. The first time I read it with my children the book made me laugh and we enjoyed very much.
I don't think that is a kind of illustration and story that my daughter would read and re read, as there are not many details and the illustration are flat and bidimensional. I know that thare are somo books that she likes to read many times. This didn't happened with Knuffle Bunny. I think that's it's a must have as it is different and funny.

Oh, woe is me! This wonderful Caldecott Award winner arrived in my life at such a poignant time! My granddaughter's "Dirty Lambie" has gone missing so any times in her 4.75 years! I just know exactly how little Trixie feels upon her realization that "KnuffleBunny" is missing! I too, had a beloved stuffed animal, the age of whom I shall not reveal....Let's say "over 50"! The illustrations with photo backgrounds must be seen to be appreciated. Buy (or borrow from the library) this book and enjoy ~ I suspect that you will end up having it as a permanent part of your Kiddie Lit. library. GREAT opportunities during reading for all kinds of reader/listener conversation, yet short enough to be read just before bed with sweet dreams to follow, no doubt!

My 3 year old loves this book. She has a "knuffle bunny" of her own-a soft squishy little rag doll that has been by her side since she was just a few months old. We call her MOLLY DOLLY. On the first day the book arrived, she had me read it over and over and over. She giggled hysterically when I read the baby talk, and was overly excited when knuffle bunny finally turns up in the dryer. Great book for toddlers!

The first time I flipped through this book I though it was going to be too short and trivial for my kids... not the case for them! This is the number one book on my 4.5 yr old's bedtime reading list right now (and has been for 4 weeks running). She is also a big fan of the "Pigeon" series by Mo Willems. She actually sneeks the book back into bed when I leave and I find her asleep with it on her chest when I do the last good-night check. Highly recommended for any child that has a "lovey",teddy bear, etc.

Is this book about me? My wife bought the book on sale at the local brick and mortar, and my daughter loves it. The art is great and the story is even better. That's why my wife loves it so much, because it seems to depict every male on this planet. You have to read it to see what I mean.

The father can't understand Trixie's language, he doesn't understand what she wants, only the mother does. Plus the father only gives a cursory search for the bunny in the laundromat, just like a lot of Papa's.

Not all Papa's are like the ones depicted, but I would say from personal experience a good many of us are.

A cute, well written book with nice art. Very original, on it's way to becoming a classic.

My husband and I just purchased Knuffle Bunny for our two year old son. I was immediately attracted to the creative artwork. I love the cartoon figures placed on top of real life scenes, and we both loved the story. My son thinks this book is hilarious, and he loves for us to read it over and over to him. It is so true to life. The other day, my son fell asleep in the car on the way home, so I carried him in and put him right into his bed. He woke up an hour later crying hysterically because he couldn't find his favorite stuffed dog named Fritz. He wouldn't go back to sleep until my husband went back out to the car in the freezing snow to find the dog. As soon as my son got his dog back, he gave him a big hug and immediately fell back asleep. My husband and I looked at each other and we said at the exact same time, "Knuffle Bunny!" We love this book!

(Hide Review...)  What a FABULOUS book
Reviewer Permalink
This book is GREAT. My daughter loves the pictures and has the whole thing memorized. So many of our kids have that one special stuffed animal or blanket that gets dragged all over town and has been through the wash 15 times. This is the story of the day Knuffle Bunny gets left behind at the laundromat and consequently, Trixie's first words.

It hits home with a few things to which many children can relate. The story has a special toy, the repitition of going to the laundromat passing landmarks on the way, then going back again in search of Knuffle Bunny, and the use of various prepositions such as in, down, through, past, and until.

And to the reviewers who believe that the book is not enjoyable because the child has a tantrum, I disagree. Tantrums in young children who can not yet talk are common, and I think this book helps to teach kids that 1) they need to use thier words and 2) they are not alone in sometimes feeling frustrated.

If tantrums are an issue for you at this stage, I believe this book offers a great opportunity to talk about using words to express feelings.

And to the 1-star reviewer who said they'd stick thier kid in the dryer with Knuffle Bunny, I can't believe they published your review, but I hope your life gets better.

I can't imagine why some parents don't like this book. One parent thought this book was more for "Manhatten babies" whatever that may mean. This story doesn't even take place in Manhatten. Well it's a cute story and whenever my husband reads it to our children he can't stop himself from laughing at the boneless part. I also read one parent thinking it encouraged tantrums. Geesh, it's clearly meant to be a comedy, trying to make light of those silly quirks of toddlers. This child in the story is frustrated that she can't get her meaning across to her dad, so she has to yell. All in all, it's a very cute book and if you like this one you will like "Knuffle Bunny, Too" also by Mo Willems, which features a preschool aged Trixie.

Several friends had highly recommended this book to us and we bought it for my nieces birthday and our son's birthday. My sister called to tell me that my 2 year old niece wouldn't let this book out of her sight, she loved it so much. We just received the book for my 3 year old son today and read it 5 times in a row to him. Each time he laughed louder than the last time. He has a blanket that probably reminds him of Knuffle-Bunny, but the real winner in this book are the screams and yells from Trixie when she realizes her stuffed animal was left at the laundromat. These led to the side-splitting laughter and fun of this book. Both of us highly recommend this for any fun-loving, giggling toddler.

On a whim, I checked this book out of the library this summer for my youngest son, who is five. When I read it to him, we were both delighted. We laughed our heads off and read it three times back to back. I then brought it home and read it to my two older children, ages 12 and 8. They also thought it was hilarious. My 12 year old actually read it several more times that evening. Later that night, my husband and I read it and laughed over the illustrations. This is the classic story of parents and children everywhere. We could identify with both the parent and the child who lost the "lovey."
A huge thumbs up from our whole family.

I first got this book when my daughter was a year old, and she still requests it to be read [she's two-and-a-half]...that's the magic of the book, it just gets better and better with each reading! The story itself is simple, a dad and his daughter, Trixie go to the neighborhood laundromat one day and on their way home, Trixie has a full-blown meltdown as she discovers that her beloved stuffed bunny, "Knuffle Bunny" is lost. Mo Willems does an excellent job with the simple yet engaging text and the photographs interspersed with simply-drawn pictures are equally engaging. I love the expressions he used to describe Trixie's agony at losing her Knuffle Bunny, "boneless" being my favorite:) The whole story is true to life [how many of us parents of toddlers have been in similar situations?] and wonderfully told. Knuffle Bunny is destined to become a classic and deservedly so!

My five-year-old son has brought this book home from the library at his school twice now, and he and my 2-year-old just plain LOVE it. I have a niece who is almost 10 who saw it at my house and said "I love that book!" My five-year-old likes how it has pictures of real places, with cartoon characters drawn into them. And they all LOVE the parts where Trixie is trying to speak and says words like "Aggle Flaggle Klabble!" It is SO hilarious, in fact, that I am hesitant to read it at bedtime anymore because they laugh so much and get SO wound up! I would recommend this book for any child of any age.

My five-year-old son has brought this book home from the library at his school twice now, and he and my 2-year-old just plain LOVE it. Parents will love this book because you can relate to the parents' feelings of glee, panic, frustration, and relief. Your children will love the cartoon pictures mixed into photographs and finding the child with the "Pigeon shirt" in the park. It's a funny book and children begin to memorize it. It's a hit at our house. I bought in in softcover and wish now I had bought it in hardcover--it gets a lot of use!

This was the first book my 2 year old son ever loved. When we first got it, I had to read it twice, every night, before bedtime. After 6 months, we do not read it every night, but it remains a consistent favorite. We went on to get 6 more of Mo Willems' books, and all are a big hit.

My son loved it when he was 2 and still loves it at 6. Now my 2 year old daughter just loves it too. What kid has never gone "boneless" when they get upset? That was my favorite part and still is. I crack up at the part every time I read it to my kids....and they just think it's funny that I think it's funny. It's a unique picture book with a very appealing bunch of characters.

I have loved this book since I first read it. I especially love this story because of the setting - my home town!

The illustrations are so unique. I love how crisp the black and white photographs of Brooklyn look behind the cartoon images. The contrast makes the book really visually appealing. And of course, every child can relate to losing a favorite toy or safety blanket.

I think every teacher and parent should have this book in their library.

(Hide Review...)  Knuffle Bunny!!!

Our little Claudia (2) LOVES this book and has loved it since she was just a few months old. It is fun to read as a parent (like all of Mo Willem's books) and we are able to read it multiple times over and over as requested by our little one and not resort to banging our heads against the wall in frustration!

On the "Aggle Flaggle Klabble" page, Claudia always chimes in with the "snurp" at the end. So cute!

One thing that is fun about Mo's books is that you see common characters popping up in all of the books. In Knuffle Bunny, you see the Pigeon on a kid's t-shirt and in the "Pigeon goes to sleep" you see knuffle bunny having a hot dog party with the Pigeon at the end. I love that about Mo Willem's books. The kids notice the common characters too!

I highly recommend this book as well as all of Mo Willem's other books. They are wonderful.
