Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7)

Readers beware. The brilliant, breathtaking conclusion to J.K. Rowling's spellbinding series is not for the faint of heart--such revelations, battles, and betrayals await in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows that no fan will make it to the end unscathed. Luckily, Rowling has prepped loyal readers for the end of her series by doling out increasingly dark and dangerous tales of magic and mystery, shot through with lessons about honor and contempt, love and loss, and right and wrong. Fear not, you will find no spoilers in our review--to tell the plot would ruin the journey, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is an odyssey the likes of which Rowling's fans have not yet seen, and are not likely to forget. But we would be remiss if we did not offer one small suggestion before you embark on your final adventure with Harry--bring plenty of tissues.

The heart of Book 7 is a hero's mission--not just in Harry's quest for the Horcruxes, but in his journey from boy to man--and Harry faces more danger than that found in all six books combined, from the direct threat of the Death Eaters and you-know-who, to the subtle perils of losing faith in himself. Attentive readers would do well to remember Dumbledore's warning about making the choice between "what is right and what is easy," and know that Rowling applies the same difficult principle to the conclusion of her series. While fans will find the answers to hotly speculated questions about Dumbledore, Snape, and you-know-who, it is a testament to Rowling's skill as a storyteller that even the most astute and careful reader will be taken by surprise.

A spectacular finish to a phenomenal series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is a bittersweet read for fans. The journey is hard, filled with events both tragic and triumphant, the battlefield littered with the bodies of the dearest and despised, but the final chapter is as brilliant and blinding as a phoenix's flame, and fans and skeptics alike will emerge from the confines of the story with full but heavy hearts, giddy and grateful for the experience. --Daphne Durham

Why We Love Harry
Favorite Moments from the Series
There are plenty of reasons to love Rowling's wildly popular series--no doubt you have several dozen of your own. Our list features favorite moments, characters, and artifacts from the first five books. Keep in mind that this list is by no means exhaustive (what we love about Harry could fill ten books!) and does not include any of the spectacular revelatory moments that would spoil the books for those (few) who have not read them. Enjoy.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

* Harry's first trip to the zoo with the Dursleys, when a boa constrictor winks at him.
* When the Dursleys' house is suddenly besieged by letters for Harry from Hogwarts. Readers learn how much the Dursleys have been keeping from Harry. Rowling does a wonderful job in displaying the lengths to which Uncle Vernon will go to deny that magic exists.
* Harry's first visit to Diagon Alley with Hagrid. Full of curiosities and rich with magic and marvel, Harry's first trip includes a trip to Gringotts and Ollivanders, where Harry gets his wand (holly and phoenix feather) and discovers yet another connection to He-Who-Must-No-Be-Named. This moment is the reader's first full introduction to Rowling's world of witchcraft and wizards.
* Harry's experience with the Sorting Hat.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

* The de-gnoming of the Weasleys' garden. Harry discovers that even wizards have chores--gnomes must be grabbed (ignoring angry protests "Gerroff me! Gerroff me!"), swung about (to make them too dizzy to come back), and tossed out of the garden--this delightful scene highlights Rowling's clever and witty genius.
* Harry's first experience with a Howler, sent to Ron by his mother.
* The Dueling Club battle between Harry and Malfoy. Gilderoy Lockhart starts the Dueling Club to help students practice spells on each other, but he is not prepared for the intensity of the animosity between Harry and Draco. Since they are still young, their minibattle is innocent enough, including tickling and dancing charms.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

* Ron's attempt to use a telephone to call Harry at the Dursleys'.
* Harry's first encounter with a Dementor on the train (and just about any other encounter with Dementors). Harry's brush with the Dementors is terrifying and prepares Potter fans for a darker, scarier book.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's behavior in Professor Trelawney's Divination class. Some of the best moments in Rowling's books occur when she reminds us that the wizards-in-training at Hogwarts are, after all, just children. Clearly, even at a school of witchcraft and wizardry, classes can be boring and seem pointless to children.
* The Boggart lesson in Professor Lupin's classroom.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's knock-down confrontation with Snape.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

* Hermione's disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling's fourth book addresses issues about growing up--the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them.
* Viktor Krum's crush on Hermione--and Ron's objection to it.
* Malfoy's "Potter Stinks" badge.
* Hermione's creation of S.P.E.W., the intolerant bigotry of the Death Eaters, and the danger of the Triwizard Tournament. Add in the changing dynamics between girls and boys at Hogwarts, and suddenly Rowling's fourth book has a weight and seriousness not as present in early books in the series. Candy and tickle spells are left behind as the students tackle darker, more serious issues and take on larger responsibilities, including the knowledge of illegal curses.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

* Harry's outburst to his friends at No. 12 Grimmauld Place. A combination of frustration over being kept in the dark and fear that he will be expelled fuels much of Harry's anger, and it all comes out at once, directly aimed at Ron and Hermione. Rowling perfectly portrays Harry's frustration at being too old to shirk responsibility, but too young to be accepted as part of the fight that he knows is coming.
* Harry's detention with Professor Umbridge. Rowling shows her darker side, leading readers to believe that Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for young wizards. Dolores represents a bureaucratic tyrant capable of real evil, and Harry is forced to endure their private battle of wills alone.
* Harry and Cho's painfully awkward interactions. Rowling clearly remembers what it was like to be a teenager.
* Harry's Occlumency lessons with Snape.
* Dumbledore's confession to Harry.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

* The introduction of the Horcrux.
* Molly Weasley asking Arthur Weasley about his "dearest ambition." Rowling has always been great at revealing little intriguing bits about her characters at a time, and Arthur's answer "to find out how airplanes stay up" reminds us about his obsession with Muggles.
* Harry's private lessons with Dumbledore, and more time spent with the fascinating and dangerous pensieve, arguably one of Rowling's most ingenious inventions.
* Fred and George Weasley's Joke Shop, and the slogan: "Why Are You Worrying About You-Know-Who? You Should Be Worrying About U-NO-POO--the Constipation Sensation That's Gripping the Nation!"
* Luna's Quidditch commentary. Rowling created scores of Luna Lovegood fans with hilarious and bizarre commentary from the most unlikely Quidditch commentator.
* The effects of Felix Felicis.

A Few Words from Mary GrandPré

"When I illustrate a cover or a book, I draw upon what the author tells me; that's how I see my responsibility as an illustrator. J.K. Rowling is very descriptive in her writing--she gives an illustrator a lot to work with. Each story is packed full of rich visual descriptions of the atmosphere, the mood, the setting, and all the different creatures and people. She makes it easy for me. The images just develop as I sketch and retrace until it feels right and matches her vision." Check out more Harry Potter art from illustrator Mary GrandPré.

This book was awesome. From the first chapter I was involved. I have loved Harry since the moment I first opened a book. My only thing was, was that I woul have liked more of a story from Voldermorts defeat to 19 years later. We need another book! AWESOME, is the best I can describe.

The seventh installment of the Harry Potter series left me feeling high and dry at a time I felt I should have been celebrating. It was the end of an era! My defining childhood literature! And yet Rowling's attempt to bundle her created world into one neat little parcel failed miserably.

Without giving any specifics, I felt that the deviation from Hogwarts did not suit the characters at all. Their 'journey' fell flat in my eyes - a cowardly tactic despite the devastation in the world surrounding. The unbridled skewering of characters left and right seemed reminiscent of a B-grade horror film. A hundred pages in I was afraid Voldemort would be left by the sidelines in favor of much more controllable zombie armies to finish off all of the light side.

Any romance attempting to develop during the story line is utterly lost in the constant movement and action, which turned more boring then battle intense by the end of the novel. The final battle is overly dramatic and missing some vital characteristic that I am still unaware of. And can anyone say hero complex?

But beside all that, I believe the most horrible part of the ending to this generations defining series is the Epilogue. Not only does it attempt to give the next twenty years' worth of history in less than twenty pages, but it was uncalled for. What happened to letting the reader decide what happens? Who needs a pretty bow telling you that so-and-so lived happily ever after with fifteen kids, the end? J.K. Rowling, borrowing one of her favorite lines, completely bulloxed the ending with a few words too many.

In conclusion, steer clear of this book. The only thing that lies here is eight hours of pure disappointment.

I enjoyed this book and do not want to give the impression that I did not - but this series has slowly switched genres.

The writing in each sequel is deeper, perhaps even better - that should be good.

But I miss the lightheartedness of the beginning of the series.

I've read all of the Harry Potter books aloud to my son (who is now 10), and, while we're not yet far into Deathly Hallows, we can see that it will be as fun as all the others. We became engrossed in it from Page One. We're excited to see how the series ends, but we'll miss reading it. It's not only been a good read, but a great experience for us to have together. He could certainly be reading it alone at this point, but we wouldn't miss the shared enjoyment.

(Hide Review...)  Mostly satisfying conclusion to the Dark Lord / Harry Potter Saga
Reviewer Permalink
Overall:
--------
4 stars - A fairly satisfying ending to the Dark Lord / Harry Potter saga -- the ending is a bit weak, slightly cliched and a lot of dead cool characters.
Harry controls the final confrontation with the Dark Lord yet gives the Dark Lord a way out (why?). The Dark Lord's insanity combined with meglomania is his downfall not Harry Potter. It is a cheapening of what one expected from Harry Potter.

The search for the Horcruxes is only really possible due to Hermiene's knowledge of magic and magical skills. Harry does show much character and pushes for understanding the Deathly Hallows but really it is more a plot device than anything else. The Dark Lord is blinded by power (searching for the Elder Wand) when he should be finishing off the opposition with the ruthlessness of hardened, paranoid war lord.

The great losses by the forces of good seem to be trivialized by the epilogue. I was looking for some type of memorial / recognition of the sacrifices made. The life as usual with the references of respect by naming of the various children is touching but not enough.

Characters:
-----------
The deaths of main characters "off-screen" is disappointing and cheapens their loss. Frankly, I cared much more about the characters that died off-screen than the potential loss of Harry's life. It is strange to think the side-characters were more important; I guess the sacrafice they were willing to make for a friend and the side of good is more compelling than Harry's battle with the Dark Lord.

The assault on Hogswort showed a tremendous amount of the internal qualities of the side characters than Harry. Harry raised the you can not do this as I will not have your death on my conscious non-sense again. Harry is clearly missing the point of friendship, trust, sacrafice and need to fight evil/darkness at all costs. Why does Ron and Hermiene have to be Harry's conscience all the time? The characters understand the risk but they also understand what is at stake -- please give them some credit!

Mrs. Weasley: She rocks! It was great to see her step up as it is hinted that she is a formittable witch in the other books.

Snape: He is one of the best characters in a very long time for me. He is very complex and well developed. I did not like how it was all tied back to silent love of a character that is barely developed. If you are going to tied up so much of your life for a lost love, the lost love should be developed in more detail.

Harry: The sudden rash of logistical ability to get the horcruxes is out of character for him. The sudden wisdom to appreciate what Dumbledore had setup is out of character and seems forced just to get the story to a conclusion. It is good that he finally accepts people for being able to think and work as a team (not guided by him).

The selflessness of Harry that the ability to turn down the Deathly Hallows is not done well as it conflicts with his selfness internal discussions. I appreciate that Harry is supposed to be the bright shining light of all that is good but the suddenness of being selfless does not quite work for me; it needed more development as I have found Harry to be very selfish in a lot of ways through out the series.

Ginny: She is a good character that deserves more development.

Dobbie: A good tie in here and lead up to the final battle. A way to turn an annoying character from early on into a real character.

Plot:
-----
The plot is pretty straight forward as it needs to resolve the Dark Lord vs. Harry situation...does the evil triumuph over good. The race between the Dark Lord and Harry's small group is reasonably well done. However, the Dark Lord would have realized the problem with the Elder Wand before the final showdown.

The Deathly Hallows is an interesting plot device but should have been mentioned in the prior books. It seems like it was added as a way to wrap up the series while the rest of the books show a clear well-developed back story. Note: this is a minor point given the level of complex back story JKR has developed for the other books.

Action:
-------
The final assault is well done with good pacing. The "good" guys should really have been wiping out attackers more effectively as they would fight together better than typical one-on-one tactics of the Death Eaters...the concept of surpressing fire, area of effect spells and defensive casting would really have helped the good guys. Also, it is a war and killing the attackers is ok...war is hell!

Prose:
------
The prose is on par with the other stories.

Summary:
--------
Overall: 4 stars
Characters: 3 to 3.5 stars
Plot: 3 stars
Action: 4 to 4.5 stars -- the assault is well done
Prose: 3 stars

(Hide Review...)  rating Jim Dale's performance
Reviewer Permalink
Rather than review the book, which I find to be generally outstanding and a satisfying end to the series, I'd instead like to review Jim Dale's reading of it.

This is my second "reading" of The Deathly Hallows, but my first foray into audiobooks. I thought it would be good filler during a road trip and beach vacation when I would be unable to actually pick up a book. Now home from that trip, I can't stop listening to it.

Dale's pacing slows me down and allows me to appreciate details I probably skim past while reading at my usual steady clip. His inflection draws you in, brings Rowling's rich world out of the words, gives a wink and a nod during the fleeting happy moments, and sets you on edge as tension rises. He provides a distinctive and appropriate voice for each character, bringing life to their personalities.

The one rather major exception I take is with Hermione's voice; the younger women's voices in general sound a bit strained, but not distractingly so. Hermione's parts, however, are spoken with a whiney inflection that elongates the last syllable of words and gets high and squeaky at the end ("Haa-rryyYYY"). Rather than making her sound reproachful or thoughtful, as I'm sure is intended, it makes her sound a bit dim-witted, almost like a thoughtless stereotype of someone with a disability. Emma Watson (Hermione in film), in contrast, manages to enunciate each syllable while simultaneously spitting out the words like the intellectual bullets they usually are.

To sum it up: while drifting off into his otherwise excellent reading, it's jarring and distracting to suddenly have such strange portrayal of a character who speaks with such frequency.

My husband and I have listened to all J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books on tape, and have loved them all. We finally got a chance to hear Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on a road trip this summer. While we enjoyed it, we thought that it was good--but not great.

The late Albus Dumbledore had charged wizard Harry Potter to seek out and destroy horcruxes. Harry is allowed to bring his closest friends, Ron and Hermione, with him on this dangerous mission. Dumbledore bequeathed each of them a gift, but without any instructions on how they are to be used. Harry receives a snitch, Ron an illuminator, and Hermione the children's book The Tales of Beedle the Bard. The trio decide to forego their final year at Hogwarts in their quest to accomplish Dumbledore's assignment. Their achieving success is especially important as Lord Voldemort now controls both the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts.

I found the plot was too long, too involved, and too spotty. At 21 hours, it was often difficult to keep things straight. There was just way too much going on, and much of it wasn't necessary to the story. The Deathly Hallows was definitely darker than the previous books and I missed the emphasis on Hogwarts. On the plus side, we learn much more about the history between Lily and James Potter (Harry's Parents), Professor Snape, Lupin and Sirius Black. Also, reader Jim Dale is a master and perhaps the best narrator alive. His dozens and dozens of voices are just amazing.

While I felt there were some problems with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, as a whole, the series is definitely a classic for children and adults alike. It has already been announced that Rowling will publish a book called The Tales of Beedle the Bard in December. Maybe it will give Harry Potter fans who are going through withdrawal a little bit of a fix.

This book was even worse than book six, and that's saying something. I could hardly finish it at all, and have only read it once. It seemed JK decided to draw in something from left field, mix it with something from under the sea, and put it on the market as the "end" of her Harry Potter series.

This book is good for nothing more than kindling in my fireplace.

Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows
I found this book to be enjoyable and entertaining. It was an excellent conclusion to a wonderful and imaginative series. J. K. Rowling is very gifted at in-depth character development and a detailed magical world that is fascinating. This book takes a reader on a roller coaster ride through the seventh year of Harry in the wizard community. This adventure was completed by planning in part but also by an extraordinary amount of good fortune, skill, courage and luck. It is a tale of sacrifice, perseverence, and loyal friendship in the face of adversity. In general a great ending to a fantastic work.

I bought this book on a very (at the time) drastic sale. 85% off I believe. And I'm glad I did, while the dust cover is very gorgeous, and the cardboard case is neat, a lack of more than one full color picture inside makes me question the original price. I'd say it's worth paying extra for such an incredible book in such pretty packaging, I wouldn't pay much more than the normal edition. It's Harry Potter, what's important is what's WRITTEN in the pages.

Don't get me wrong- I am sooo glad I didn't pay $69 plus postage for this- but the fact that I can get in Australia for under $25 and in such pristine condition. The illustrations are worth $25 alone- Bloody awesome buy

I bought this book because it was reduced in price, 65% off I think. I have no intention of actually reading this book as I already have the original. However the artwork in this book is stunning!

I had already purchased and read the standard edition and I bought this one for fun. It was well worth it. The full sized chapter artwork at the end is really cool. The cover is nice too. Well worth the current price!

This is by far the best book ever. Along with its extra artwork and full size chapter imagines in the back it makes reading the last Harry Potter book a delightful experience. The book is in such great quality made you can read it, reread it, and pass it along friends without having to worry about its spine coming apart. I definitely recommend this edition of the book, it makes the experience much much better.

I am so sad that this book has come to the end. When you read it you will feel like your playing parts in the book. I just wish some of the main character's were still alive at the close of the book like Siris and Dumbledore. It was a complete shame that they had to die off. I pre-ordered this book and now I am trying to find it in Paperback to go w/ my middle son's collection. I had to buy him the 1-6 series, and I had to replace my Harry Potter Soccer's Stone. I had paperback and it fell apart. I highly recommend this and all Harry Potter Books and Movies.

(Hide Review...)  anticlimactic conclusion to a phenomenal series

I was disappointed with Deathly Hallows. The book for the most part is an engaging and entertaining read, but I felt the ending was a letdown. JK Rowling has shown herself over the course of the previous six books to be a master of the surprise twist, of taking the expected, the conventional, and standing it on its head; in comparison, the conclusion here feels flat and cliche to me. After having raised my hopes in book 6 (Half-Blood Prince), Hallows brought me right back to where I was at the end of book 5 (Order of the Phoenix): disillusioned. It was not the ending that a series like this deserves- but then, perhaps there *IS* no ending that could have lived up to all that the rest of this series has been.

In Deathly Hallows, we learn a lot more about Albus Dumbledore's backstory and family history- and find he is only human after all. The question of Severus Snape is resolved in a way that many of us fans will have anticipated, but played out in a manner that I found oddly unsatisfying. After terrorizing us for seven books, big scary Voldemort turns out to be just another 2-dimentional bad-guy, a petty villain. We lose several beloved characters. And Harry, in the end, gets what I suppose he has really wanted all along- the chance to be just an ordinary guy, out of the glare of the spotlight of fame; but, funny, I thought the whole point was that he is NOT a mere Muggle.

If you've gone this far with Harry Potter, then you're so invested in the characters and the outcome that it didn't matter if Rowling wrote down a book consisting of nothing but the grocery list of Filch, you'd still eat it up.

Fortunately, Rowling didn't give us any fluff and delivered on a great ending to one of the greatest literary series of all time. The reviews were mixed when this book first came out, and there was some speculation that this was mainly due to the shortage of advanced copies, and the fact that people actually had to read it in a set amount of time and give their thoughts on it quickly.

But they shouldn't have been mixed because you couldn't ask for anything more with this finale. There was a complex plot, with our three heroes rummaging through the scenes of the series that we all know so well. There were twists, losses, gains, and a great epilogue.

If you are mad at the ending, know this: this isn't Cormac McCarthy. Rowling isn't looking to beat the millions of kids who grew up reading her books over the head. She ended it the exact way it needed to be done.

My wife and I enjoyed reading the book and we felt at a loss when it was all said and done. Like old friends, the characters had become a part of our lives, and now we have no knowledge of what will beset them in their futures.

If Rowling ever gets the bug to write either a prequel or the continuing history of the Hogwarts students, then no one could blame her; as we would all secretly be hoping for such unabashed gluttony as well. But she did the right thing while ending it on top. People want more, but the story is told.

The time has come. Harry's about to turn seventeen which means that all of the charms protecting him at the Dursley's house will disappear and he must leave Privet Drive before Lord Voldemort arrives to kill him. Needless to say, the first sixty pages of HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS are riveting and by the time the action slows, you're ready for a long deep breath. Anyone who's read the previous books knows that Harry's mission is to find and destroy the remaining Horcruxes that contain bits of Voldemort's soul, and then kill Voldemort. No easy task. The Dark Lord now controls the Ministry, the Giants, Dementors, Azkaban, and many others. Spies are everywhere and there's a price on Harry's head. But Harry's one clever--if not lucky--teenager and, with Ron and Hermione's help, he launches the most difficult quest of his life.

For a 607 page book, the story moved incredibly fast, and I couldn't put it down in many places. In slower sections, Rowling does a great job of showing Harry's anguish, impatience, frustration, and grief over those he's lost. Harry's mission prevents him from attending his final year at Hogwarts, so readers don't get to see other key characters as much, yet this only exemplifies Henry's sense of displacement and loneliness as the months drag on.

The ending was satisfying on many levels, though the epilogue was a bit disappointing. A conversation between seven or eight characters--many of them new--was hard to follow. There was no back story and almost no inner monologue to shed light on what had transpired with familiar characters since the final confrontation. Still, for Harry Potter fans, THE DEATHLY HALLOWS is a must read and it saddens me that the saga's come to an end.

While I would have preferred to be able to purchase this as a digital download (a format the other books in the series are available in), this CD set meets the need. Fantastically narrated, this is a great way for couples/families to read a book together. And, of course, anyone looking at the last book in this series already knows this is an excellent series and story.

(Hide Review...)  The terrifying, yet satisfying conclusion...

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows" is the utterly terrifying, mystifying, captivating, and satisfying conclusion to JK Rowling's Harry Potter series. This story brings together all the threads, and brings them all to satisfying, and in some cases surprising, conclusions.

Harry and his friends do not return to Hogwartz for their seventh year, as the death of Dumbledore has changed nearly everything. Voldemort's rise to power accelerates, as he now controls both Hogwartz and the Ministry of Magic! Going into hiding, Harry, Hermoine, and Ron take on the task that Harry feels is the legacy that Dumbledore has left to him. Together the three begin hunting down the remaining Horcruxes, and search for ways to destroy them, while at the same time desperately trying avoid detection by the Death Eaters, who now have the full might of the Ministry of Magic behind them. In this story we find the young children that began this journey through magic and adventure over six years past, gown to adulthood, and showing that Dumbledore's faith in them was not misplaced.

****WARNING, MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!!!!****

This book is definitely NOT for the faint of heart, nor those who are looking for a nice, happy little stroll through fairyland story. These kids have come of age, and the danger that they face has also, as they face life and death consequences. I thought that reading the death of Dumbledore was difficult...but reading the last moments, and the sacrifice, made by Doby, it was the first that I actually sat the book down, because I couldn't see through the tears in my eyes. A definite MUST READ for any Harry Potter or modern fantasy fan.

HIGHLY recommended, in fact, probably one of my favorite stories that I have ever read.

My only complaint about the book was the ending I felt, like many others, that it was a bit of a let down for Harry to win because of a technicality. Their were so many other ways that it might of ended in Harries favor, like the sword having some additional power, etc. But, to come all this way after so many years it was a bit of a let down and that is why I give it four stars instead of five. Maybe they will fix this in the movie but I would be happy if they just stuck to the books.
