Green Eggs and Ham (I Can Read It All by Myself Beginner Books)

Illus. in color. Sam-I-Am mounts a determined campaign to convince another Seuss character to eat a plate of green eggs and ham.
This timeless Dr. Seuss classic was first published in 1960, and has been delighting readers ever since. Sam-I-am is as persistent as a telemarketer, changing as many variables as possible in the hopes of convincing the nameless skeptic that green eggs and ham are a delicacy to be savored. He tries every manner of presentation with this "nouveau cuisine"--in a house, with a mouse, in a box, with a fox, with a goat, on a boat--to no avail. Then finally, finally the doubter caves under the tremendous pressure exerted by the tireless Sam-I-am. And guess what? Well, you probably know what happens, but even after reading Green Eggs and Ham the thousandth time, the climactic realization that green eggs and ham are "so good, so good, you see" is still a rush. As usual, kids will love Dr. Seuss's wacky rhymes and whimsical illustrations--and this time, they might even be so moved as to finally take a taste of their broccoli. (Ages 4 to 8)

I love the book Green Eggs and Ham. I bought the BOARD BOOK for my 2 year old to enjoy. With all of the flaps it was not sturdy enough and within 24 hours the book was ripped to shreads from opening and closing the flaps. He loved the book. I don't think he was exceptionally rough. Due to his lack of fine motor skills he worked the flaps and caused the rips. We have no other board books that were ripped to shreds from normal use. Board books are for toddlers not preschoolers that have a concept of books.

We all know this book, no need for me to re-iterate the plot.

What makes it work, though, is that Dr. Seuss understood the importance of breaking the rules - something many of his imitators never grasp. He didn't stick to a rhyme scheme or a meter all the time, he varied it and dropped it when needed. That makes his books readable instead of mind-numbing - even when you're reading them for the 1000th time straight :)

I forgot how much I loved this book until I began reading it for my 3-year-old. She loves it, and I love reading it to her (unlike the ELMO books which our daughter loves and I dread). You really can't go wrong with Dr. Seuss. The illustrations are imaginative and the writing is really a work of genius in children's literature. I can't recommend this highly enough.

As a mom of a 24 and an 8 year old (I know . . . big surprise) I am firmly of the opinion that Dr. Seuss is the greatest American philosopher! In this book he urges us to try things that we may be afraid of or even repelled by. Many folks think this book applies only to food but I think he is urging us to be more brave in all avenues of life. We need to listen to those around us urging us expand our horizons. I believe that if we go for it and 'take a bite of the egg and ham' then we too will say "Thank you, thank you Sam-I-am."

Being the cruel and heartless person that I am, it was been years since I have bothered to so much think about this book. But, it being the week of the celebration of Dr. Seuss I have been reading various Suessian books to them. I forgot what a fun tongue-twister of a tale this was! My kids were able to repeat entire sections of the book with me and the illustrations are entirely animated without moving. Awesome book.

(Hide Review...)  A powerful aid for anyone struggling with Cartesian method.
Reviewer Permalink
This work, I find, is most easily read as a very simple allegory; Sam-I-Am is, of course, René Descartes (his name is a clever clue to this fact; a clear reference to Descartes' famous "I think, therefore I am" statement, which we can extend upon this reading to "I think, therefore I am Sam!"), while the unnamed character represents the millions of unnamed target readers of Descartes' "Discourse on the Method". The first rule of Cartesian method--that we cannot accept anything as true that we do not know for certain--is the work's primary focus; the unnamed character accepts his dislike for green eggs and ham as truth, despite the fact that he does not know this for certain. In accordance with Descartes' first rule, Sam-I-Am knows the unnamed character must try green eggs and ham before he can take such assumptions as truth. However, the book also explores Descartes' provisional axioms on customs and culture: that we must maintain custom in our public lives while we are searching for truth. This is illustrated by Sam-I-Am's willingness to illuminate the truth on a plane, on a train, in a box, with a fox, and in various other states that may exemplify Seussian culture. The pictures and incessant rhyming sometimes distract from the true focus of the work, but I still find it an invaluable resource in Cartesian studies.

This is a great book. The repetitiveness of the words is great and that it contains approx 43 words is great too. My daughter whom I have been reading to since before she could talk can read this book through, she still has 5 months until she starts school. She read it completely for the first time today. I would highly recommend this book.

I bought this and a few other Dr Seuss books for my son's 2nd birthday and this one is by far his favorite (though he also likes 'The Foot Book' and 'One Fish, Two Fish...').

I credit this book with improving my son's vocabulary quite a bit. His pronunciation of common words in this book such as train, mouse, like, etc... has improved greatly. He enjoys to read along and point to the characters as I read about them in the story. I imagine this would be a good book for kids just learning to read as well, since the words are short and the sentences have a simple structure to them.

Additionally, the story is easy enough for a youngster to follow but also fun for adults to read...which is nice since my son wants me to read it 7 or 8 times a day.

Got this to replace the tattered copy we were using. This book was always a favorite of mine and continues to be so even now when we read it with our son. New books are great, but you can never go wrong introducing your children to the classics, especially when they rhyme. And maybe even your kids will learn the lesson that trying new food is ok, but probably they will just like that the book is so silly.

If you're searching for a literary example of peer pressure, look no further than Dr. Seuss's subtly horrifying "Green Eggs and Ham." The "hero" of this tale, Sam-I-Am, spends the entirety of the book trying to force green eggs and ham upon a nameless skeptic. The "villain" turns down the offer several times, but Sam-I-Am persists, going so far as to follow him home in order to make him try the green eggs and ham. He uses several textbook methods of peer pressure, including the famous, "You'll never know that you don't like it if you don't try it." He refuses to respect the man's right to say no, and badgers him incessantly until he caves under the pressure.

What disgusts me most about the end of the story is that once the man tries the green eggs and ham, he loves them and is simply another addition to a pool of addicts. Dr. Seuss's tragic allegory for the rising drug use among young people that plagued his time period is brilliant, but certainly not appropriate for young children. Sam-I-Am is too easily twisted to become a hero, opening the antagonist's mind to new things, rather than a metaphor for Satan as I believe was originally intended.

In conclusion, do not read this book to your children unless you are willing to explain to them that people like Sam-I-Am should be avoided at all costs, and that they should never follow the path of the story's antagonist.

Dr Seuss is most definitely responsible for putting a lot of people off their dinner, and also for encouraging the experimentation with food coloring in a whole range of normal foodstuffs that probably did not need spectrum alteration in the first place.

What a devious, sneaky and subversive publication.

The children's book entitled Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss does a great job of teaching young kids to try new things while increasing their vocabulary. The illustrations are very nicely done with hybrid "things" replacing people. These "things" are part human and part "thing"--great concept to stimulate a child's imagination! The text is written in easy to understand words so that with a little help your child be able to read this book independently soon.

The book tells a cute story of how a smaller "thing" or, "person named Sam" follows a "grown up thing" or, "person who is not Sam" around, beseeching them to try some food they've never eaten before, namely green eggs and ham. Happily, the food turns out to be delicious in the end. While the basic moral of the story is not to be afraid of trying new things; the child learns a lot of vocabulary and comparisons at the same time. Great!

Specifically, children learn the concepts of "here," "there" and "anywhere;" "like" versus "do not like;" and modes of transportation including "car" and "train." Excellent!

The book is nicely bound and the strength of the hardcover binding makes the book tolerate the bending and occasional carelessness of a young child who is learning to read partly by using this book. Great!

I highly recommend Green Eggs and Ham for younger kids who are just learning to read. This book will increase their vocabulary by introducing words, comparisons and pictures. The child gets encouragement to try new things; and the adorable illustrations will delight children everywhere.

Great job, Dr. Seuss!

Much has been written about how Green Eggs and Ham is about leaving our comfort zone to try new things, and how it's like an allegory of telemarketeers changing their tactics in order to sell their products. However, I would like to mention the amazing thing about how Dr. Seuss only used 50 words for this book. Seuss has come up with a hilarious story with his rhymed silliness, but this story allows us to see how the negations get compounded as this cumulative story progresses, no matter how many settings Sam-I-am persuades his client to eat his plate of green eggs and ham. This is truly an exhilarating book that should count as one of Seuss's masterpieces.

Ah the yearly Green and Ham food day is upon me. It must be spring..

As a [..]teacher there is a special "fun" every year breaking 6 to 8 dozen eggs (out of pocket), plus the bacon I call ham (out of pocket) , cooking it all up in our classroom in my electric wok I really should review that wok. Tomorrow bright and blurry I'll be serving to kids that pretty much will eat anything. It's shocking that, well, I don't get eloctrocuted doing this as the wok has no off switch and this necessitates some interesting moves and also shocking because every year a few kids cannot figure out why I make it green.
Every single year I get a few children when I ask," Why do you think we are turning it green?" (I'm asking while they are in their small group awaiting a turn to cook the eggs) They say,"Because of the Leprechauns?" I always say................no...no..no....try again think about this book. Hold it up.

It's spring and my class has between 100 and 500 sight words depending and they can read this book.Almost every child. Seuss maybe did phonics but he did a few other things too. Rhyme, repitition, pattern, funny, picture clues. In short though many like to claim this is phonics at its "best" it's actually a pretty good demonstration of how to embed a text in a meaning centered activity. So of course we read and cook and try. Yum, my turn. Cooking the bacon is harder still, bacon grease, the wok, wrong in everyway but I've perfected it. Last year Heidi said, "For God's sake use the microwave. " I'd never thought of that in 15 years of doing this. There sat the micro. My teacher buddy gets paid the big bucks for this kind of advice. So wok it is!

If you just stoppoed in from a Seuss world and missed the plotline the book tells of a Sam who is trying to convince a not Sam to eat something clearly hated, Green eggs and ham. Since I raised a picky eater it sort of remains the classic "try it and see" book. I really find it a good way to start talking to a child about broadening a "set" perception and the importance of talking steps to overcome things that limit us, like food aversions.

Somehow tomorrow I get to cook it all up and try to remain standing when the CPR training takes me till very late. Such is life in a classroom. Some days you break a few eggs.

You'll enjoy this when your child briefly passes through the time they'll want to read this. I have always loved it for having students read animatedly to our room as I cooked kids read in their pairs as Sam and Not Sam. It's rather fun. I would not could not on a train....no nor in a boat, not on a float or never, ever behind a goat. But you know that already.

So now you're an adult. Or think you are. Your New Age "wisdom" books, CDs, etc., that you've accumulated - throw them away. Right now! You've been to the mountain and back, confronted your inner demons, your inner child, your inner wild man (or woman, or both). Look, you don't need to meditate on a mountaintop or see an analyst to "get it." Go back to basics. From the child-like Sam-I-Am you will learn perseverance, creativity, and humor. The flop-eared, grown-up grouch in the tall hat will teach you trust, the courage to try new things, the ability to look beyond appearances, humility, gratitude, and the joy of simple, nourishing food.

This is a book to be savored, read aloud in the company of children and friends. Laugh, cry. Make it a part of you. Try out new voices. Imagine what might "go" with green eggs & ham: Guiness? Black-eyed peas? Tomato aspic? A dish of Rocky Road? Buy 10 copies and give them to you friends. Your enemies, too.

To tell you the truth, in my religion we don't eat ham and I don't know what green eggs are. They sound absolutley disgusting. When I tried thinking about it, I vomitted. Now i may have vomitted because I had eaten too much raw lasagna that night, but I think it was from the book. But anyways, I digress. So this guy does not like eating it anywhere, like with a goat or on a train, but then at the end of the book he wants to eat green eggs and ham, sam i am. Who is Sam? There are two main characters in this book, and I can't figure out which one is Sam. Which one doesn't enjoy green eggs and ham? Is that one Sam? Well if he's Sam, who's the other guy convincing him to eat those disgusting eggs. If I was asked to eat green eggs and ham, I would put down the offer and so "no thank you." But this guy goes "i do not like it, Sam I am." C'mon. You don't tell people what your name is when they ask you if you want to eat green eggs and ham. What is this book teaching the children of our generation? Green eggs and ham is almost as stupid a food is mush, which is from the book Goodnight Moon. What is mush? I do not know what mush is.
All in all, this book is not very good but I'd give it 2 stars because I like beating my roommate with this book.

What a great book. I recently had to do a school paper about tapping into your childhood. I chose to read 10 books from Dr. Seuss. Reading Green Eggs and Ham took me back to the fun I had when I was in 1st grade. Dr. Seuss has a way of setting your imagination free. Through his books you see it is ok to be different and strange at times, and it's ok also to try new things, like the green eggs and ham. You never know - try it you might like it.

There are just some books that fill your heart with such joys and giggles that you remember them all of your life; this is one of them. How many people do not know the phrase, Sam-I-am? or Green eggs and ham? Make a face.........but still you know you just gotta try it at least once in your life, you grab that food coloring, give a squirt, fry up that egg with your ham and you say, " Yeah! that's good!" And for some reason for the rest of your life you are one of perhaps thousands that were convinced by one little book that green eggs and ham really are okay! Great book! Great memory!
