|
In a great green room, tucked away in bed, is a little bunny. "Goodnight room, goodnight moon." And to all the familiar things in the softly lit room--to the picture of the three little bears sitting in chairs, to the clocks and his socks, to the mittens and the kittens, to everything one by one--he says goodnight. In this classic of modern children's literature, beloved by generations of readers and listeners, the quiet poetry of the words and the gentle, lulling illustrations combine to make a perfect book for the end of the day. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Perhaps the perfect children's bedtime book, Goodnight Moon is a short poem of goodnight wishes from a young rabbit preparing for--or attempting to postpone--his own slumber. He says goodnight to every object in sight and within earshot, including the "quiet old lady whispering hush." Clement Hurd's illustrations are simple and effective, alternating between small ink drawings and wide, brightly colored views of the little rabbit's room.
Finding all of the items mentioned throughout the book within the pictures is a good bedtime activity--a reappearing little mouse is particularly pesky. By the end of the little rabbit's goodnight poem, the story has quieted to a whisper, and the drawings have darkened with nightfall. As you turn the last page, you can expect a sleepy smile and at least a yawn or two. (Picture book) |

I got this as a gift. It is a precious story of a child resisting falling asleep to no avail.

My son loves this book so much that he doesnt just want me to read it at night.. he wants me to read it a million times in the day too! my 19 month old loves pointing out all the objects on the page that we are saying good night to. The worlds are flowy.. the pictures are perfect and it keeps him interested from the first page to the last. A toddlers bookshelf is incomplete without this book!

I got the book for my 4 yr old and 2 yr old - but neither of them like it much. My husband and I don't like reading it either, and here's why:
The text is quite disjoint, like bits and pieces of other fairy tales and nursery rhymes put together. It seems like the author has just put down random things together - there's no rhyme (literally!) or reason for any of the pages. It does not flow lyrically. The only interesting aspect is the black and white illustrations on some of the pages. This offers a striking contrast to the color illustrations. However, the whole book has not been put together well, and the quality of illustrations is just so-so. So the impact of the b&w is also pointless. Compared to other wonderful books like the "Hungry Caterpillar" or "Ten Little Lady Bugs" or "The Firefly's First Flight" which we all really love, this book definitely is not worth having in the childrens' bookshelf. I seem to be among the minority in disliking this book on Amazon - perhaps I am not seeing something that others are.. But hey! this is truly my opinion! Every child I've ever read this too has begged for me to "read it again". It even captures babies attention as well as my six year old son's still, who's read it a gazillion times.
This book is so good it's falling apart, it's been read so many times! Time to order a new one! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-10 02:42:48 EST)

This was practically the first book I read to my son, from the time he was one month old. It's got a beautiful rythm, and is the perfect length for a first baby book. The story is very simple: a young bunny says good night to everything in his room, which is great so that a baby can first familiarize himself with his surroundings. I've read that some reviewers didn't like the black and white pictures in between the color ones, but I think the alternation (color, b&w, color, and so forth) fits very nicely and is a good way to keep the attention of a very small baby, as well as the change from looking at the whole bedroom to a particular object on each page, which helps the baby learn about context and to focus. Once my son was older, we had lots of fun looking for the mouse in all of the color pictures.
Frankly, I read the poor reviews and I don't agree with those opinions. One of the complaints was that the story was too simple, but I think that they might not be able to see that a very young baby needs a very simple storyline, a month-old baby couldn't follow a more complex story like "The cat in the hat" for example (which I love, don't get me wrong!!!). I just think that those who reviewed this book poorly can't look through the eyes of a very young baby, or bought it for an older child and of course couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. My son is now 3y.o. and we hardly ever get this book anymore, but I can't wait to be pregnant again to start reading it to another baby... (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-10 02:42:48 EST)

I started reading Goodnight Moon to my son at 4 months of age and it became his favorite bedtime story. When he reached about 9 months I started pointing out objects to him and naming them for him, like the cat, moon, fireplace, red balloon etc. Before long he'd point them out to me as I read. He's nearly 2 and he still enjoys this book, although he gets to choose each night and he often now chooses another book. I know he still likes it though, and he still will point out things to me. I think this is a great book to get someone as a gift or just to add to your baby/toddlers library.

Im not sure if my daughter just has less of an attention span or wants to look at more interesting things but i found this a highly useless book. The objects in the book were very small, on some pages they were in black and white and some of the things in the room arent very topical or relevant. I tried reading to my daughter from this book. she was happy to bang her hands on the book generally and try to turn the pages but the pictures werent in the least bit interesting to her and the lyrics didnt have much of a soothing effect either. i find it hard to believe that america finds such a third rate book such a classic.

I got this book from friends several years back and thought then that it was cute, but now that I have a one year old son I think it is GREAT! My son absolutely adores this book and we have to read it to him every evening before he goes to bed. He also carries it around with him during the day (first thing he picks off the shelf in his room), and it seems to give him a great sense of comfort.
Personally, I love the way the book is set up with the repetition of the same motifs and the gradual darkening of the room. So clever! The repetitiveness also is great for fostering cognitive development. My son now recognizes a few items in the book and points them out as I read it to him. I can't wait for the moment when we can together say goodnight to all the different objects in his room at the end of the day. What a great way to end a child's day and help him get comfortable in his room and ready for the night. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-14 02:36:27 EST)

This book has certainly stood the test of time.
My nieces read this book as children and now they are adults. I like this book. Although it may seem somewhat simplistic to some adults it is for a young child. As one reviewer commented "it put me to sleep", isn't that what it is supposed to do? It is a book about going to bed. To me, it de-mystifies the the things in a child's room that may seem scary to them once the lights are out. If you help the child identify the items in their room, then they are not so frightening in the dark. Of course, this is only my perception. Haven't so many of us experienced seeing an object in our room as a child, in the dark and it looks like something it's not? Then you turn the light on and discover it is only your teddy bear. I loved this book since I was a kid enjoying this. Actually, I think it was my little sisters - but I loved it too. If you are looking for a simple book that your children will love and enjoy this is it.
The cover alone brings back memories! It makes you want to share it with new generations. Great gift too! Merna Pocket of Pearls: A 30-day pocket workbook to start hearing a softer voice inside of you! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-06 22:46:01 EST)

This book was written to be very boring, very calming.
As a result, many adults simply cannot stand it. I firmly suggest that you read the book before purchasing it or putting it on your baby registry. If you remember it from your childhood, re-read it - many childhood books seem different once you've grown up. Then, if you still love it and don't mind the thought of reading it every night for a year (children *will* get their little fixations), go ahead and buy it! (This is actually good advice for any children's book, but especially the ones in the "lull them to sleep" group.) If you find it a little too much... get something else. I will note that even if you do not buy the book, many people find that saying goodnight to everything in the room (or good-bye if you're leaving the house instead of taking a nap) is a good transition activity for little children. as part of the bedtime routine for my now 18 mo old boy. Of course, I am able to recite it by rote after oh, about 10,000 times. I don't even have to pay attention any more, as he knows where to turn the pages. Why do I keep doing this night after night? Because every time I ask him if he's ready for his story, he giggles with delight and runs to get Goodnight Moon, and Brown Bear, the other book of our nightly ritual. Brown Bear always comes first, Goodnight Moon always comes last. In between, we vary it with others, like Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear; Quick as a Cricket; Are You My Mother; The Very Hungry Caterpillar; Thomas the Tank Engine; etc. I love Goodnight Moon for making that sweet little boy express such delight at reading it.

A classic bed-time book that shows the psyche's of a child who doesn't want to sleep. What's a child to do when they want to postpone sleep? Say goodnight to everything from kittens to mittens and when you can't think of anything, say goodnight to nobody. A classic example of what happens when a great writer collaborates with a genius illustrator. There are so many things going on that the first few times you read it there is something new you discover. The gradually darkening of the room, the bunny turning around to say goodnight to the bears and the mouse! Where is the mouse? A somber book made fun....

I got this based on the positive reviews...the sheer number of them. It is OK but I don't like the fact that there are some black and white pages and some coloured. The pictures also are small and don't really grab me. My baby is still only 5 mths old so I will see if maybe this is just an adult thing.
I prefer for going to bed time 'the going to bed book.' (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-10 02:16:18 EST)

It is a classic bedtime story book. It is short and simple, yet very young kids like it. Reading it to my toddler daughter is like reading a poem. I started on this book when my daughter was almost 1 year old. It was a bit late, she should have started on it earlier. She loves it. My daughter always sits on my lap when I read the book. She would turn her head around to smile at me everytime I read through a particular part of the story. My daughter is now 15 months, everytime when I pick up this book and starts to read to her, she would start to suck her thumb and know that it is time to sleep. At this moment, she likes this book the most among other story books.

I bought this book together with Runaway Bunny. My daugther fell in love with Good Night Moon only. She loves looking for little mouse and loves to look at the nice illustrations and listen to lovely rhymes. At the end, we say good night to things in her room as well.
What I wish is maybe to have all ilustrations in color (some are in black and white). But overall, this is lovely book, strongly recommend it. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-04 02:18:53 EST)

I bought this book for my 2 year old daughter with fond memories from my childhood. She loves it, and wants to read the 'moon book' every night. She loves it so much she even 'takes care' of it, sleeping with it at night and gently turning the pages (all other paperback books have been ripped thus far). If you don't own this, you need to.

This item of psychedelic literature appears charming at first, with its depictions of traditional Anglo-American décor and its rhythmic treatment of a soothing bedtime ritual. But closer inspection reveals subtle dangers for the young mind. This is not just the story of a rabbit-child going to bed, saying goodnight to everything he sees. This is the story of a mind on edge, of the dissolution of temporal reality. What is there is not necessarily there, like the red balloon that disappears in the middle of the book, only to reappear at the end. Or the socks on the drying rack, inexplicably gone. Or the painting of the moon-jumping cow; sometimes we see a mailbox there, sometimes not. The number of books on the bookshelf changes, throwing the very notion of objective perception into chaos. If one cannot be sure of where one is or what is in front of him, how can he be sure that he is anywhere at all? "Cogito ergo sum" offers little comfort in a world where the self has no ground to stand on.
But the ultimate threat to the unsteady mind is on the rabbit's nightstand, where a copy of Goodnight Moon rests ever so humbly. Imagine: a book within itself, within itself, within itself, to infinity. What tricks this could play on a young reader who, sitting in his room alone, mind dimmed with fatigue, only wanted to say goodnight to that lovely bowl of mush! Oh that tasty, tasty mush. Just like mom makes, with the raisins and the brown sugar. Or you always thought she made, but now you can't be sure. Highly recommended as a sink or swim test for curious young minds. Also consider Common Psychological Disorders in Young Children for parental reading. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-21 02:18:07 EST)

Initially, I would have rated this book a one star but after reading reviews of others who had children before, I decided to give the book a chance. I learned that the repetition of this book is a teaching tool and realized that as I began to read the book to my infant a couple months ago. As time goes by, she is beginning to recognize the common objects in the pictures that she sees in our home. I love the way the room darkens as it is getting closer to bed time. The illustrations are beautiful and the other objects drawn in the "great green room" were carefully thought out by the illustrator. The simplicity of the home environment gives the reader a feeling of warmth and security. Yes, the simple words will eventually get boring to an adult, but to a baby/child with limited vocabulary, it is perfect.

Review by Sherry North, Author, Because You Are My Baby
Goodnight Moon is a classic with good reason. The poetic text has a gentle, soothing rhythm that truly can lull young kids to sleep. The artwork seems a bit dated though. Every other spread is in B&W, and the color spreads have a very limited palette featuring a lot of orange and green. This simple art may appeal to very young children, even if moms find it lacking. The Truth: I'm a Girl, I'm Smart and I Know Everything As a positive psychologist and the author of a book for tweens and their parents, I am very senstive to what is good reading for both kids and their parents. This little book is at the top of my list. It touches the hearts and minds of children and their parents, while creating a warm, loving, soothing environment. What better way to fall asleep, then to snuggle with a parent who is reading words that are poetical and sweet?
This book never goes out of style. It has pure intent and that means it is ageless. In fact, I can't wait to read it again to my grandkids. Or should I just get it out and read it to myself tonight? The Truth: I'm a Girl, I'm Smart and I Know Everything (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-26 20:26:55 EST)

My 17 month old son has now gone through two copies of this board book. Every night we have story time where we read a few stories, and we always end by reading Goodnight Moon. He flips through the book as I recite the story that has become our bedtime ritual. Then he sleeps with it, and every time he sees the book a grin spreads across his face. Thank you Margaret Wise!

We received this book for a gift when my daughter turned 4. She has loved this book so much that even though she is 13, when we go through all our books to donate to others, she always insist that we keep this one. As a writer of children's books, we love to see books like this for children that they can read over and over and never get tired of them.

This is my son's favorite book. At first, I didn't quite get the book. Didn't quite understand what all the hype is about. But after my son got a little older and was able to find the mouse in each page, it made me appreciate the book more. I have passed this book to new parents and will definitely enjoy it again for my 2nd child.

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown is a wonderful book for children of all ages. It takes place in a great green room late at night while Mamma Bunny is putting Baby Bunny to bed along with all of the other objects that are in the room.
Margaret Wise Brown's rhymes throughout the story will really hook your child. Each rhyme will bring your child one step closer to reading on his or her own. The illustrations by Clement Hurd are exceptional. Every child should have this book and every parent should read it to them at bedtime. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-02 23:35:42 EST)

Children love this book because the can become like the little bunny in the room. They can be transported, effortlessly, to this green room and be warm and snug and safe. We adults read the words aloud, but we have forgotten how to find safe haven in simple things. I, myself, sometimes yearn to sit with the fire and the two kittens and the big moon and just be at peace.

A perfect bedtime read, with a rhyme that becomes familiar.
When younger it was one of my daughter's favorites's, later on she began to follow what is being said in the pages and then memorizing it and "reading" along. The first time you hear your child say "Goodnight" to something that is in the book, your heart will melt, It really is just too cute. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-13 20:43:26 EST)

I purchased this book for my twins because we needed a good bedtime story. It is a great story to read at bedtime. It has become apart of our nightly ritual. For those needing a little help developing their bedtime routines, I would highly recommend this book!

What a great gift for my new grandson. My three daughters loved this book and I just had to have one for him. I hope he will look back on it and cherish the memories of his life through it's pages.

I had never heard of this book until my firstborn came along and someone gave it to us. I read this book at least a couple hundred times; well, repeated it because after a few readings you have it well memorized. The book lends itself to your reading it with inflection and even whispering. A terrific gift for all new parents or grandparents.

My bestfriend is having a baby in April and for her baby shower, instead of giving cards, we were all instructed to buy a book to start "Baby's" library. We were told to write a message to "Baby" in the book. I thought this was a really cute idea and had never heard of anyone doing it before! I picked this book because I remember my friend telling me once it was her favorite book growing up. I figured now it can be "Baby's" favorite book as well!

How wonderful to locate reasonable prices on ageless classics such as "Good Night, Moon." Watching a 3-year-old grandson enjoying the same pictures that your own children loved - life doesn't get any better than this.

You must get this book for your kids. It is the best board book, in my opinion. My kids have learned to listen to books being read, learned to talk, and learned to read with this book. One of the top 5 books your kids need in their home library from day one.
