| Good Night, Gorilla | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Good Night, Gorilla won the 1994 Cuffie for "Most Likely to Succeed in Years Ahead" and has more than lived up to that prediction, becoming a modern classic that is a must in every child's library.
This perfect package will give kids the opportunity to cuddle up with an adorable plush gorilla while they are enjoying his secret bedtime antics. |

"Good night, Gorilla," says the weary watchman as he walks by the gorilla cage on his nightly rounds at the zoo. The gorilla answers by quietly pickpocketing the guard's keys, stealthily trailing him, and unlocking the cages of every animal the oblivious fellow bids goodnight to. Looking much like an exhausted father, the uniformed guard traipses home toward his cottage, while the lonely zoo animals softly parade behind him. The animals manage to slip into his bedroom and nestle unnoticed near his sleepy wife--until the bold little gorilla goes so far as to snuggle up beside her as she turns out the light. Author and illustrator Peggy Rathmann (creator of the Caldecott-winning Officer Buckle and Gloria) relies more on the nuances of her jewel-toned pictures than on words to pace this giggly bedtime story, making it perfect for observant preschoolers. In one inky-black spread, Rathmann lets only the shocked, wide-open eyes of the guard's wife tell us that the gorilla has been detected! Tiny details such as the faithful, banana-toting mouse and sky-bound pink balloon that appear in each picture keep this book fresh, magical, and fun--even after countless bedtime readings. My son loves this book. He really enjoys listening to the stories that his dad makes up about each animal. There aren't too many words, leaving you room to ad-lib it, which is fun! This is one of our many books we tend to read at night.

In this beautifully-illustrated bedtime book, the gorilla steals the key from the zookeeper, letting out all the animals, who follow the zookeeper home to bed.
The story is cute, but what I really loved about this book was the great illustrations. The colors pop out at you from the page and capture your attention. This book is one of my new bedtime favorites! I can't wait to read it to my son. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-23 02:39:22 EST)

My 18-month-old loves to look at this this book over and over again. ("Gwa!") But I don't mind at all... "Good Night, Gorilla" is one of my favorites.
The pictures tell the story in this book; there are only a handful of words. I love the stunningly vivid and detailed illustrations. There are little surprises everywhere you look -- a stuffed Babar doll in the elephant's cage; a family picture of the zookeeper's wife holding the baby gorilla. When I read it to my son, I tell him something different every time. He loves to point out the things he knows the words for: "Keys!" "Moon!" "Abido!" (otherwise known as an "armadillo"). Even though I know what's coming, I can't help but smile every time at the animals quietly following the keeper through the zoo, tiptoeing through his living room, curling up in his bedroom, and then finally following the zookeeper's wife back to the zoo. (You get the feeling it isn't the first time she's had to do this.) This is a beautiful and peaceful bedtime story. I hope you like it as much as we do! Opposed to other reviews, my personal opinion is that Good Night Gorilla is better than Goodnight Moon (although both are great bedtime stories). Funny and filled with great illustrations, Good Night Gorilla is a charming reader. My sons just love it. Another bedtime story I'd recommend and they love is Ladybug Baby Bug, by Janice and Mark Perkins.

My 14-month old son runs to the bookshelf, grabs this book, and thrusts it in our direction to read to him over and over again - he just can't get enough of it! My husband and I have each read it to him dozens of times and happily we aren't bored of it either; the illustrations are excellent, and the story is creative and funny. I highly recommend this book.

A very poor book compared to "Goodnight Moon". Just mooching off the the "good night" kiddie book market.

My son has been reading this since he was 8 mos old, he loves to look at the pictures (there are minimal words) while I describe what is going on. At about 11 mos, when he got to the page where the zookeeper's wife finds Gorilla in bed, he laughed out loud! It's so cute to see him "get it."
As he gets older, there are many smaller details in the pictures that will catch his attention, so it's a nice book that will grow with him. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-01 02:41:10 EST)

Goodnight Gorilla is a perfect bedtime book or for those young children just learning to read. The book has colorful illustrations and repetitive phrases that make it easy for young ones to understand and follow along.
Goodnight Gorilla follows a zoo keeper as he says goodnight to all the animals. The gorilla swipes his keys and lets all the animals out, which of course, follow the zoo keeper home and into his bedroom at night. My 2 year old thinks its hilarious. Its one of his favorite books. I'm so glad we got it. Its a real hit. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-25 13:45:44 EST)

What a winner this book is! Great pictures. The repetitive phrases are repeated over and over by my liitle tyke. He has to hear it every night before bedtime and repeats the words as they are read.

My two sons (ages 5 and 4) have enjoyed this book for the last two years. While there isn't much text, the illustrations are so playful that we can't help but read the book as a three-person bedtime performance.
I can't speak for what little girls find funny but little boys find nothing more humorous than a gorilla climbing into bed. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-02 03:30:42 EST)

This book is a keeper for all ages. Young children (and I mean really young, you'd be amazed at who will pay attention to these illustrations) can point out details and ideas with very few prompts. You can simplify your language when telling this story to a 15 month old, and then expand your vocabulary and sentence levels for older children. Even kindergarteners love this book. They can re-tell the story without being able to read. They can answer questions about characters, motivations, predictions. Please do not let the fact that there are not a lot of "written words" turn you off from this story. Every good storytime reader knows that descriptions, questions, and "what's happening here?" are most beneficial to young children.
Please give it a chance. Your child will love it! (from an early childhood speech pathologist) (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-30 02:51:26 EST)

There's so very much for young children to see, learn and imagine in this wonderful book, Good Night Gorilla. The illustrations are as wonderful as the text, suggesting the feelings of the characters as the silly and exciting story progresses.
Every child will be tickled by the idea of all the zoo animals following the zoo keeper back to his little house, much to the surprise of his wife. All the animals in this book are sweetly detailed, and will keep your child coming back to Good Night Gorilla over and over again. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-20 04:33:49 EST)

We love this book. The art is great and the story is fun. My kids love to go through and follow the mouse, follow the balloon, identify the different animals, etc. My son's favorite part is the different voices I use for the animals saying Good Night. But one thing makes us sad - we check off all the animals' dollies (they find the armadillo's hysterical) but we cannot find a dolly for the lion!! I tell them maybe he's sitting on it. Surely he has one.
At any rate, we love this book and would not hesitate to recommend it. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-23 03:01:47 EST)

My 20 month old daughter loves this book. Most nights I get "more" from her meaning "read it one more time". She loves this book and the surprise eyes at the end make her smile every time. I'd recommend buying this book and Ten Minutes Till Bedtime by the same author. If you buy that book, on one of the pages you can see the same illustration as in Goodnight Gorilla outside the window. My 4 year old loves to put the two books together so you can see both illustrations side by side.

This is one of our favorite books (my 18 month old and me) It's short on words but the fantastic illistrations tell the story. We read it several times each day. It's one of the first books my daughter brings to me when she wants a story read to her. All the adults that pick it up love it as well. I would recommend it to everyone.

This is my daughter's very favorite book. We are already on the 2nd copy at 15 months because she wore out the first copy! I highly recommend it. There are new things to discover (and label) each time you look through it with your child (which means it doesn't get as "old" as some other books for the adult!!!). Great vocabulary builder for toddlers!

A cute concept and gentle story. However, our 25 month old guy never gets past the second page before casting it aside and going for Duck in a Truck, The Going to Bed Book, Goodnight Moon or Where's My Dog Scruff.
Try as I do to make this story more engaging for him by pointing, asking him to find things, imitating animal noises, etc., it just doesn't appeal to him. Perhaps when he's older and understands the joke better... (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-18 02:17:48 EST)

My son just turned one and this is his first favorite book! We've already broken the binding on our first copy (my son gets so excited to point to the gorilla he manhandles the book) so now I'm going to order the box set with the book and the toy gorilla. This has also become MY favorite kids' book. It is so clever and I just love the sneaky gorilla character who just wants to snuggle up in bed! I am still noticing new elements in the pictures after reading it dozens of times. In the future I will definitely buy this book as a gift. It is just so darn cute.

I have lost track of how many copies I have bought of this title! It is my MUST gift for baby showers. I recently ordered ninety copies for a project called BOOKS AND BIBS. Every child born at our local hospital will receive GOOD NIGHT, GORILLA and a bib that has "Read to Me" on it! I am a retired elementary librarian and I can guarantee a positive response to this book used as a read-aloud. My not-quite-two year old granddaughter came home one evening and went all through her house calling "Rilla! Rilla! Where are you?"

Some might not like the format of this book (lacks a printed story) but I found it fun. I'm not even the most imaginitive person but I discovered my 2 year old son enjoyed this book whether I changed the versions of the story or told it the same. This book was enough of a hit with him that I was able to retire a worn copy of a Dr. Suess book that had become part of his nighttime routine. Great night time reading book!

I ordered two copies of this book based on all the positive reviews (one as a gift and one for my 9 month old), they are both being sent back. We have a collection of great board books this one is not worthy among them and it is not good enough to be given as a gift. I can't understand how people rave about this book, the text is boring and unimaginative, the art is not very good and the overall feeling of animals in cages does not make for pleasant dreams ( the animals do end up back in their cages for the night!). There are tons of other great books in this range keep looking... We ordered Time For Bed by Mem Fox and it has light years more character and charm.
For the record I don't spend my time knocking children's books. If people are going to pay good money for something they have a right to know peoples opinions. I admit the gorilla and mouse are kind of cute...but not cute enough for us. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-04-09 02:20:46 EST)

This is one of my son's favorite books and one of the most fun to read. The story is gently comic, the pictures are full of clever detail, the colors are beautiful, and the animals look so sweet it's always a pleasure. My son, who is eight months old, crows with delight every time we reach the page where all the animals say "goodnight" in black and white and in all different sizes. It's nice too, because with so little written dialogue, you get to tell the story in your own words. A classic in the making.

Love love love this book! This was the absolute favorite book for both of my children at about age 15 months. And they both still love it at 2 & 3! I have given it as a gift at so many baby shower now I should own stock! My children loved following along as I described what happened on each page and now my daughter loves to read it to her little brother. I would also suggest getting the scholastic video. It also has become a favorite for my children.

Good Night, Gorilla is too wonderful for words, of which there aren't very many in this book. But the pictures and the humor of the story told through the pictures is both different and charming everytime you look at it, which with my grandchildren is several times a day, at least. This is a book to buy many times and to give as a gift as often as you need one. Oversized is better.

I bought this book for my daughter, who was under the age of 1 at the time. The reviews here drove me to buy Goodnight Gorilla and to be honest; I was not impressed at first. My daughter however, had a differing opinion; "Little D" fell in love with it from day one. I believe there is something magical within the pages of this book and KIDS JUST LOVE IT.
WARNING...There are not many words, but that is when a child/parent can use their imagination. I have learned to add gestures, words, and involve my daughter in the actions that is within the books pages. My daughter has now learned to do the actions without my prompting and can say "Goodnight Gorilla"; so there is an opportunity within the pages to teach/learn. Among the countless books we have, this book is a must read every night in my 16 month old daughter's eyes. I cannot explain why there is such a strong draw to this book; the only explanation is that IT IS MAGIC! So for the sake of YOUR child, bring the magic into YOUR home. My two year old (26 mos) adopted from China just LOVES this book. As his grasp of English and French are too minimal to listen to long stories with a lot of words (he just wants to turn the pages faster than I can read), this minimal text storybook is just the thing for him. As an other reviewer noted, you can go through it quickly, or more slowly pointing things out etc. He is very observant and loves finding the mouse and banana, toys, slippers, the keys etc. As I have mimed and pointed out things, he now "reads" it to me, pointing out details, mimicking facial expressions, showing appropriate surprise (the zookeeper's wife), copying the gorilla's sheepish "discovered!" grin, miming the gorilla and mouse climbing under the covers at the end (with his hand under his shirt). He will bring this to me daily and have me "read" it three times in a row. Before this he wouldn't sit through more than a four-spread book without wanting to flip ahead. I highly recommend this for kids "new" to books, not just the suggested 3-6 yr old age .

This is one of my all-time favorite children's books to give. It's great for a range of ages. It is a wordless picture book- so parents and children have to create the story. One-to-Two year olds learn by just naming the animals they see; older children can talk about the events. A few reviews shared that there wasn't much of a plot- I think that these reviewers just weren't ready to take their job of reading to kids one step further, making reading an interactive activity. There is a lot to talk about in this book!
Enjoy! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-29 09:18:17 EST)

Our daughter is just turning two and loves this book. I love it also because I can make it a short read (not that many words) or draw it out into a 10 min read by talking about the colored keys or to point out the moon and the balloon in almost every page or to find the mouse.
There are so many great details in the photos. I love this book and so does she. Jason (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-26 13:01:04 EST)

A friend had this book and I just loved it, so I ordered it for my 2 year old. There are few words, but the pictures tell a great story of zoo animals being freed and then following the zookeeper home. Cute illustrations with hidden pictures, will grow with the child from looking at the colorful pictures to learning the animals to counting the colored keys as the gorilla frees each animal. Very sweet!

My 11-month old sits still with this book at least 20 minutes a day. I would read it with her, gasping at the page in which the zookeeper' wife's eyes fly open in the dark bedroom, and then again when the wife realizes there is a zoo in her bedroom. Now my daughter gasps at those pages, and she laughs out loud. If she's sucking her pacifier, she spits it out to laugh. Not much can make her spit out a pacifier. We've easily got 25 classic board books, and this is her absolute favorite. It has been for 3 months now. It's also one of the few books I never tire of. The illustrations are beautiful, warm and really clever.

This book came with some dissappointment. You will probably find the illustrations to be good, but there was not much of a story for my three year old. I found myself having to make up my own narration to the story. Older kids may be able to grasp the story from the illustration, but this is probably not for preschoolers.

Our 25-month-old loves this book and wants it read to her roughly 2 or 3 nights out of the week, EVERY week. And, of course, we have to read it to her 3 or 4 times in a row. (You can't really "read" this book, of course, it has almost no words...you have to describe it.)
Here's something I've been doing for the last few weeks that REALLY adds to the whole experience. Our daughter has a small stuffed gorilla that bears a faint resemblance to the gorilla in the book. I tied a thread to the gorilla, unreeled about 8 feet of thread, and put the spool in my pocket. Later on, as my wife was cuddling our girl before bedtime, I came in with the gorilla and told it to sleep well and have a good night. I put the gorilla on the floor and walked away and out the door. As soon as I'd gotten 8 feet away, the gorilla starts "following" me. I generally bring it back two or three times and go through this again. The first time I did this, our daughter laughed so hard she got the hiccups. Even now that I've done it many times, she still laughs tremendously hard every time the gorilla follows me. (And because the lighting is low in her room, she doesn't see the thread.) (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-11-30 13:59:06 EST)

This is a great board-book for kids between 1 and 5. The illustrations are beautiful, and get my kids to "think" about all that they can see. This book is one of my daughter's favorites - she'd crack up with laughter when the lights went out and the animals said goodnight. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

This is a great story book. The 5 stars is for that.
I bought three editions for different kids: Good Night, Gorilla (Picture Puffin Books (Sagebrush)), Good Night, Gorilla, and Good Night, Gorilla (oversized board book). The Puffin edition is bound in a way that makes it difficult to open flat. The paper is thinner than most good hardcover children's books. The two board book editions are very nice. You also might want to try the regular hardcover edition. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-10-13 01:56:38 EST)

Goodnight, Gorilla is a delightful book, filled with fun, secrets and anticipation. We started reading it at age 2 and my now 6 year old son still enjoys it! We especially love the dark page with eyes....you will too! It is the perfect companion to '10 Minutes Till Bedtime', also by Peggy Rathmann, because this cast of characters appear in that book as next door neighbors! Together they make a perfect child/baby gift. Thanks Peggy Rathmann!

We received this book as a gift after our daughter's birth, and now that she's ten months old, it's her absolute favorite. She actually goes to her book basket, digs through the all of the books to find this one, and then brings it to us to read to her. The best part is that because the narrative is told through the pictures instead of through words, it's a different book when I read it to her than when her father, grandmother, etc. does. I'm sure that as she gets older, we'll be able to modify our reading of Good Night, Gorilla to suit her age, pointing out different things about the story than interest her now. This book is destined to be a classic!

My 2 and 3 y/o daughters LOVE this book. It's a fun book and teaching about many animals and the zoo. It's a wonderful gift for your child or a gift to another child. Highly recommend it.

My 7 month old son LOVES this book. It is part of his bedtime routine and it is now his favorite book. He looks at every picture and loves the woman's expression at the end. Sometimes we describe what is going on to him, but often we just turn the pages and I see his eyes scanning the scenes.
