How will this book make children who don't have fancy things at home feel? I think materialism is a vice that doesn't need to be taught in a children's book. Enough people learn this on their own, why try to instill it in a 3 year old? If you want a book about a cute silly girly-girl, buy Madeline.

This book is adorable especially for little girls who like to dress up and look fancy. The story is heart warming and funny but in the end, it teaches about love and family. Nancy's search for way to sound fancier also teaches children wonderful new vocabulary words(sometime in French as well).

The pictures inside and the story may be uber-cute but doesn't anyone find the cover picture a little bit JonBenet Ramsey creepy? It's basically what makes me reluctant to give this to any little girl.

(Hide Review...)  Love to Be Fancy
Reviewer Permalink
What a wonderful book! Well, I admit, mostly I like looking at the pictures. But even for someone who's completely grown out of pink and purple, I often read this book wishing I could have the self-confidence to dress just like Nancy. I've read things about this book saying that there is no deep message, but I think there are several. I love that Nancy's parents make room for her to be herself even though they don't act like she does. And I love that Nancy has the desire even at such a young age to see beauty and elegance in everything around her. Her parents don't let her do everything she wants (think of the time she goes to her grandparents' anniversary party) but they let her do enough to let her personality shine through. And as for being too dramatic - I believe that the only people who believe that over-the-top clothing and attitudes are wrong are the people who need to take a deep breath and figure out why they spend that much time thinking about stuff like that.
Keep being Fancy, Nancy!!

Fancy Nancy
By Jane O'connor
Illustrated by Robin Preiss Glasser

Fancy Nancy loves to be fancy, but her family is very plain. Nancy gets an idea. She will teach her family to be fancy. They all dress up in fancy clothes and go out to eat at a restaurant. Everyone turns to look at them as they enter. "Maybe they think we are movie stars," thought Nancy.

Nancy uses fancy words like: fuchsia, plume, stupendous, and accessories.
Any little girl who likes to play dress-up will enjoy Fancy Nancy.

I bought this book for my daughter's 3rd birthday. She absolutely loves this book! Great illustrations and a fun story. She will request this book to be read to her. I have to talk her into reading another book just so we aren't reading "Fancy Nancy" 7 days a week. This book is interactive in the sense that there is soooooo much detail to the illustrations that you can spend so much more time on the pictures than just the words. I would recommend this book to all little girls that have a good imagination or need to spark their imagination. I think this will be a good book for my daughter for years to come! I can't wait to see what other "Fancy Nancy" books are out there to add to our library!

I have a four-year-old daughter, and this is the perfect book (and series) for her and her age set. The girls can all relate to how fancy Nancy appears all the time, and I love all the great new vocabulary words my daughter has picked up from Nancy's "fancy" words. Great (and clever) illustrations, too. I now buy this book as a birthday gift for any of my daughter's friends who don't yet have it, and it's an instant hit. This is a can't miss book! I only wish I had it when I was their age!

This book is a feast for the eyes. Beautifully illustrated and with a very nice lesson about love and family, this book is a favorite of mine(and my three year old loves it as well). Nancy lives in her own little fancy world, but she is loved for who she is. This book is a great read. Adults and children will be happy to sit down and read this one

(Hide Review...)  The daycare kids go crazy for this!
Reviewer Permalink
The kids at the daycare where I work get this glazed expression now whenever they see this book - they chant FANCY NANCY over and over. The fancy girls who all love pink and purple and glitter, of course, took to this right away. All of the boys have hovered nearby to overhear what happens, and now they just clamor on in with all the girls to reread the story again and again. It's a great story with a great heart. The expressive and detailed illustrations remind me of Hillary Knight, which is a good thing.
Even better are the lessons: learning acceptance for people who are different... in this case, ironically, a precocious child learning to accept and appreciate her normal family for who they are. But what I really loved about this book was the way Fancy Nancy's family provide selfless validation for her in the way they embrace her interests - an excellent model for all of us.

Reviewer Permalink
I have a horrible feeling that this little girl was me at that age, before I went I-couldn't-care-less in fashion. But Nancy, for all her frills, has a heart of gold and just wants to teach the world to have a little more class, bless her heart.

Nancy makes for a charismatic narrator, and it's easy to get inside her head. At the same time, the ways of her family also hit home.

Rather than having a life-changing message, this is a sweet story with lots of heart that just wants to express that everyone is different and that's okay.

Fancy Nancy is my daughters favorite book series right now. She is so funny and it's good because my daughter has added a few words into her vocabulary (she calls them her "Fancy Nancy" words). My daughter and I discovered Fancy Nancy at the library when we checked out Fancy Nancy & the Posh Puppy. She was enchanted with Fancy Nancy, and we were tickled when she began using some of Nancy's fancy words like "plume". So, I purchased the original Fancy Nancy for her as a gift. It's the cutest story about how Fancy Nancy decided to teach her family about being fancy, and how her family loves her so much that they want to try it out. We absolutely LOVE the illustrations and the story gave us a lot to talk about.

This book is cute, fun and entertaining. My daughter is 3 and LOVES to dress up. I've always limited this to at home only, but after reading the book it got me thinking, honestly... why? They're only young once and if it makes her feel good, why not?!?

It's a cute book. We now have 3, Fancy Nancy, Fancy Nancy and the Posh Puppy, and Fancy Nancy and the boy from Paris. I plan on buying the rest, although I wasn't as into the Posh Puppy or the Bon jour Butterfly ones as she was.

When I saw the cover and title of this book, I just knew it was perfect for my granddaughter who is just like Nancy! The star of this book doesn't like anything to be "ho-hum"...she dresses fancy, decorates fancy and acts fancy. This book has become a new favorite and since there are several in the series, it should be easy to find a gift when needed. My daughter came home after work the other day to find her girls all dolled up their dress-up clothes and they had even convinced daddy to dress up in a tie so he could be fancy, too! Cute book, great illustrations.

Fancy Nancy is a beautiful story with lively and colorful illustrations! Both of my daughters (ages 7 and 3) love it. The 7-year old loves to read the book over and over and has learned to use the French words from the book in her routine conversations. The 3-year old loves to just look at the illustrations while I read it for her every night. They both can relate to Fancy Nancy.

I originally bought this book because my sister's name is Nancy. I read it to a class of pre-K children. They delighted in Nancy's "fancy" words for everyday things and the wonderfully exotic and sparkling pictures in the book.

This book can definitely enhance a child's vocabulary while helping them relate to a little girl who is different than the rest of her family. I found that the young girls seemed to like the book better than the young boys.

Luckily, my sister Nancy is becoming a grandmother for the first time and will have a grand-daughter she can share her Fancy Nancy books with!

This delightful book is every girl's dream come true--regardless her age! I bought it for my 14 year old daughter (named Nancy), and she loved it--identified completely with this remarkable protagonist who has to suffer through her parents' very un-fancy lifestyle. We're going to give it to her 68 year old grandmother for Mother's Day.

On a larger scale, this book shows a good family working together, supporting each other. My other daughters love it as much as Nancy and I do. I recommend it for all ages.

My 3-year-old daughter pulled this one off the shelf at the library and loved it so much we had to buy it. In fact, she has decorated her room with beeds and boas since reading this book. She loves to be fancy and there is nothing wrong with that. She is, in fact, a little girl. She is never disrespectful or unhappy with her family because of this book and it seems a bit over the top that someone would go as far as to say this book teaches children to be that way. It is a fun and beautifully illustrated book that we love to read together. In fact, we have all the Fancy Nancy books and have bought them for her grandmother who is "Fancy Nancy" herself and she loves them just as much!
