Dr. Seuss's ABC: An Amazing Alphabet Book! (Bright & Early Board Books(TM))

With Dr. Seuss as your guide, learning the alphabet is as easy as A, B, C.
BIG R, little r,
what begins with R?
Rosy's red rhinoceros.
R...r...R

From Aunt Annie's Alligator to Rosy's red rhinoceros to a Zizzer-Zazzer-Zuzz, learning the alphabet is bound to be fun with Dr. Seuss. And with this small, sturdy board-book version of his classic ABC book (Dr. Seuss's ABC), even the tiniest tots can indulge in a little alphabetical education. Each letter is featured with Dr. Seuss's unmistakably nonsensical illustrations and text: "Lion with a lollipop," "Camel on the ceiling," "Uncle Ubb's umbrella and his underwear, too." The youngest readers-to-be will get lots of letter practice with the repetitive use of each letter and the easy-to-memorize rhythmic rhymes. Soon your favorite preschooler will be reading this book aloud to you! (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter

I have to say, I don't enjoy reading this book. I see in the reviews that there is a longer version, and I think I might like that more. This one just gets on my nerves. My son seems to really enjoy it, though.

(Hide Review...)  A Great book to teach ABC's!
Reviewer Permalink
I got this book because I wanted something that I could use to help teach my son his ABC's. I bought it when he was about 15 months and immediately he enjoyed the book. We would sing the song, read through the entire book, I'd point out the letters etc. I find this book a very helpful starting point for learning the alphabet, a fun way! One idea for younger toddlers, when I started we'd just read the letter and skip the other info on the page. This way the book was more managable for my toddlers short attention span. I have to say though, he really likes this book. Esp. when we first got it he'd literally sit down with the book and just flip through the pages. A++

This book is perfect for a toddler learning their ABCs. My 2 year old loves the pictures and repeating all the words. Boardbooks are sturdy and great for toddlers....even though this is not exactly like the original, its still a great book.

I didn't know that what I ordered were adaptations of the origial. I saw a cheaper price and ordered them. My daughter loves Dr.Seuss but not in this version. I think it would be fair to advertize the book as being the short edition, or adptation, specify clearly that it is not the entire text. I hope that I can return them because I want the real Dr. Seuss and not the " butchered" one, as one of the previous reviewers said.

The cute rhymes as you teach your child(ren) the alphabet, only as Dr. Seuss can do! Very entertaining to the child as they learn and for the person reading it to them. It's not too wordy. A must have!

(Hide Review...)  I actually love this "revised version"

I have an 18 month old who will not sit still for the original version but LOVES this one. She particularly likes its rhythm and repetition. Unlike the original, every letter begins with "Big "X", Little "x" what begins with "X"? She'll move her shoulder's back and forth in rhythm every time I say this sentence, waiting for the answer to follow. Young toddlers find that repetition comforting. . . if you want an example, how many times have the insisted on seeing their favorite movie?

Nuff said. Get this book for a younger toddler and introduce them to reading.

The other review complaining about how it is shortened is just silly. Yes, the original is longer and my toddler finds it more entertaining- but when we first got this board book, ds wanted to read it several times a day. He still likes it read to him. It is perfect to start babies off on Dr. Seuss.

This book, and other Dr. Seuss books, are classic early children's reads. I read this book to my children starting when they were toddlers, using the board book edition. The rhythm, the rhyme, make it so fun to read aloud. I was definitely inspired by Dr. Seuss when I sat down to write my first rhyming picture book, which is now published! If Dr. Seuss was alive today I would have to say, thank you Dr. Seuss for helping me learn to read, my children, and for inspiring me as a writer. This book is great for teaching the alphabet and for teaching sounds that begin with each letter of the alphabet. And Dr. Seuss's art is always fun! A. D. Tarbox, author of ALREADY ASLEEP

Yes, this is an abridged version. But it's not mutilated. The abridgement was done very sensitively, and if you didn't know better, you'd think it was just as Dr Seuss wrote it. It really captures his joyful "voice" and his distinctive lilting rhymes.

I can't praise this board book enough. Sturdy, bright, shiny, colorful, beautifully printed, and huge*. My 7-month-old son goes crazy for these great big durable Seuss editions. He can gum the spine and smack the cover and even turn the pages eagerly (if clumsily) without wrecking the book, so we both have a great time reading it. To me, that is the point of books for the very young -- to have fun with them and teach them that reading is a joy.

I will certainly get the regular edition when he's old enough, because this edition is not quite the same book. But it is not an inferior book, either. It's "the simplest Seuss for toddlers' use," as it says on the cover. Your baby won't know about revisions or edits. All he'll know is that reading is fun and books rock, thanks to Dr. Seuss.

*(Please note that I'm reviewing to the -Oversized- Bright and Early Board Book edition, which is also sold on Amazon. The little versions are also very good in their own way, but I highly recommend getting the oversized versions when possible. They're beautifully produced and a big hit with the little ones!)

I started reading this book almost every night to my baby when he was around six-months-old. At first we would only get to about the H before he'd lose interest. The more I read it to him the longer he'd last and before I knew it we were reading the book from A to Z. He's ten-months-old now and he loves to turn the pages all by himself.

Sometimes when he's getting fussy and I want him to calm down at bedtime I start saying "Big A, little a..." and he smiles almost every time. I have the whole book memorized now after reading it so many times and I'm still not tired of reading it to him! (I have the revised version)

I am a Seuss loyalist, too, but I gotta say the folks that have their knickers in a bunch about the board-book abrigment are making mountains out of molehills. My baby grew up with the shortened version... we love it! If you prefer the longer, original version, that can be found as well. But this is still one of the greatest books ever written, no matter what format you find it in.

Call me crazy...but I like this version better than the original. I think it flows much more nicely and my daughter (2 years old) can say it along with me. Shame on you who don't like it because it isn't the "original" version. Sometimes toddlers need a shorter version (and sometimes that version might even be better!)

All I can say is that we love it!

This book takes allthe wacky fun of Dr Seuss and makes it travel sized!!My daughter loves toook at this book and I take it with me everywhere. Its small size makes it easy to just throw in the diaper bag (or purse) and go! Plus the board pages are sturdy so you don't have to worry about over-zealous infants ripping pages.

(Hide Review...)  The whimsical language Dr. Seuss!
Reviewer Permalink
This irresistible rhyming board book dances through the alphabet with the infectious cadence and zany illustrations that bear the hallmark of Seuss. ("Big F, little f, what begins with F? Four fluffy feathers on a Fiffer-feffer-feff.")

I see a customer wrote that the board version cannot compare with the original hardcover. I have both versions and they don't differ drastically. Either way, what child or grown-up can resist "Ten tired turtles on a tuttle-tuttle tree..."

My son who is 4 years old truly enjoys this book. He reads it everyday (pretend to read it only by memory). This one is fun to read out loud ~~ and it really teaches our children the fun of learning our alphabet. While they are still young to know the alphabet, they do enjoy the bright colorful pictures of this book as well as the whimsical language Dr. Seuss is famous for!

If you like Red Fish, Blue Fish, you will enjoy this one. It moves along at a fun pace and it's not boring to repeat yourself time after time!
I highly recommend this one ~~ it's hard to get tired of reading this one!, my son can second that motion.

Having been a Dr. Seuss fan since I was a little girl, I was immensely interested in this adorable board book for my own baby girl. I have had a hard time getting her interested in books and the Bright & Early Board Books (namely the Dr. Seuss ones) have actually caught her attention! This ABC book uses silly concepts and fun drawings to encourage children in the department of learning their letters. I particularily like the repition involved with each letter, to really draw the child's attention to that specific letter, rather than just words that start with it. A great read, for adults & kids alike.

Reviewer Permalink
Like most of the other reviews, I too loved the longer version of this book as a kid. However, board books were created for youngsters who aren't ready to handle the delicate paper pages of the regular version. It's for that reason that I love this book, too. My son is 18 months and while he loves the full-length version of Green Eggs and Ham, most of the other Seuss books are too long for his attention span. He will sit and listen to me read these shorter stories or he can flip through the pages himself. When he's older we'll introduce the other, longer versions to him.

The *original* "Dr. Seuss's ABC" was my very first book, which I loved, and memorised before I could read, and can still quote verbatim.

I bought this edition for an unofficial godson, and was appalled, *appalled*, to discover that it has been cut for length. The most delighful, most whimsical, most Seussian verses have been hacked out by an insensitive vulgarian with no ear for the language.

I know this book by heart and while I was reading it to my granddaughter I noticed right away that there was a lot missing. I wouldn't have bought it had I known it was incomplete.
The original is a great book for kids. My daughter at 2 years old could "read" this book word for word from memory. People would watch her in amazement thinking she was actually reading. She did become a very young reader and I think Dr. Suess's style of writing played a hand in it. It is a fun book that we never tired of and I highly recommend it. Not this shortened version but the full length book.
