(Hide Review...)  Great little book!

This is such fun for my two year old grandson! It is tough enough to last through many readings, and he is fascinated by opening each one of the little doors as we read through it. At this age, he probably does not really "get" the story line, but he loves the surprise of each little door opening, and saying the name of the animal.

(Hide Review...)  Another simple, repetitive story for little ones!
Reviewer Permalink
Children like a repetitive structure because it helps them understand what's going on and predict what will happen next. (For that matter, adults like it too! Repetition is a crucial part of traditional storytelling and modern-day speechifying.)

This one is about a child who wrote to the zoo for a pet and, being a zoo, they sent him/her all manner of exotic, but unsuitable animals before finally hitting on a puppy. Each animal is hidden inside a box of some sort, that's where the flaps come in.

It's great fun (at least the first thousand times, then it's only a little fun) to lift the flaps and adlib some animal sounds to describe whatever's hiding. And, as a plus, the flaps on this book are actually fairly sturdy - we haven't had a rip yet, and we've had this book a few years.

Definitely a keeper.

My two year old son loves this book. The pages have flaps you lift and then you can see the animals. He loves that. We read this book every night repeatedly before bed.

(Hide Review...)  Very engaging for a 9-month old

I introduced this book to my 9-month old son, who immediately took to lifting the flaps like a pro. This cooperative reading of the book, makes the required multiple readings entertaining rather than tedious. We've never had a concern about the sturdiness of the flaps, as these are a bit thicker than some other books we've run across us. Although, please note, my son hasn't figured out that ripping pages might be fun and is appropriately gentle with books. He is now 21 months old and still requests this book often. This was also the first book, I saw him browsing by himself, at about 12 months old.

I just bought this book for my 22 month old daughter. She LOVES it! We have read this book everyday since I gave it to her. She is also very careful with lift the flaps which could be a problem with some toddlers.

My 18 month old daughter LOVES this book. She says the next animal even before we get to the page. She also makes each animal sound (except for the camel because Mommy and Daddy don't know what sound a camel makes). The flaps are more sturdy then some other flap books she has and thus less likely to get ripped. There's a good reason this book has been a favorite for 25 years.

My 18 month old absolutely loves this book! He will bring it to me first before all the others. He loves lifting all the flaps and finding all the animals. The book also helps him learn all the names of all the different animals at the zoo. Definitely a wonderful purchase and highly recommended.

I bought this for my 3 month old son for Christmas. He is a little young for the flaps, but the book is durable and VERY cute. Great for little ones.

I bought this book about a month ago for my 2 1/2 yr old daughter. She is really into animals and loves going to the zoo. The book is very simple but cute. After reading it to my daughter a few times she knows what things describe each animal. She will see a picture of a frog somewhere and say "Frog too jumpy" It is a great book to get young kids into reading. She loves the flaps and the sentances are short so she will "read" it to me at bedtime. All in all its a fav at our house

(Hide Review...)  Great for children with Autism or other learning disabilities
Reviewer Permalink
This is a wonderful lift the flap book for any young child. It's especially appropriate for children with autism or other learning disabilities. Each page contains only 1 flap hiding only 1 animal. The backgrounds are simple white. Some of the other flap books have way too much going on in the background or too many flaps on one page, making it difficult for some kids to focus on the activity. My son, who has autism and is 4 years old, still loves this book even though he knows who's hiding behind the flap. We used it to teach him animal noises, and now we use it to encourage him to answer yes/no questions. I can't recommend it enough for a special needs child.

My son, almost two, loves lift/flap books. He was able to learn and say each animal quickly; In fact, he has almost memorized each animal before we lift the flap. He also has learned to associate the animals in the book with animals at the "real" zoo. One of my son's favorite books.

(Hide Review...)  Cute, but for me it's MOTS

More of the Same: My 14 month old likes Peek-A-Boo Zoo better (the La Maze book) and also Goodnight Gorilla. But she likes this one as well. It guess we just have too many books on her shelves that involve recognizing and naming the zoo animals. And, there is ALWAYS an elephant and a giraffe involved.
